Palin takes digs at Fey, Couric

Palin had tough words for Fey and Couric.

Palin had tough words for Fey and Couric.

(CNN) - Sarah Palin is credited with making Tina Fey a world-wide star and boosting Katie Couric's ratings at CBS.

But in a recent interview with conservative John Ziegler, Palin said both "exploited" her twelve-week candidacy - a fact, she said, that "says a great deal about our society.”

Fey's widely-applauded portrayal of the Alaska governor boosted SNL's ratings, while Couric’s audience grew after a series of interviews during which Palin now-famously faltered.

“I did see that Tina Fey was named entertainer of the year and Katie Couric’s ratings have risen," Palin said in the interview. "I know that a lot of people are capitalizing on, oh I don’t know, perhaps some exploiting that was done via me, my family, my administration - that’s a little bit perplexing, but it also says a great deal about our society.”

The Alaska governor was particularly upset with an SNL skit during which Fey's version of Palin said, "I believe marriage is meant to be a sacred institution between two unwilling teenagers."

The line was a clear reference to Palin's 18-year-old daughter Bristol and her fiancé Levi Johnston. The two announced shortly before the GOP convention that they were expecting a baby and had plans to marry.

"The mama grizzly rises up in me, hearing things like that," she said of a skit. "Here again, cool, fine come attack me. But when you make a suggestion like that that attacks a kid, it kills me."

In the wide-ranging interview, Palin also faulted the McCain campaign for agreeing to a series of sit-downs with Couric after the first one appeared to go so poorly.

“I knew it didn’t go well the first day, and then we gave her a couple of other segments after that," she said. "And my question to the campaign was, after it didn’t go well the first day, why were we going to go back for more…going back for more was not a wise decision either.”

During one of those follow-up interviews, Palin took heat for appearing to be unable to name the newspapers or magazines she reads: "Um of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years," was the Alaska governor's response.

In the interview with Ziegler, Palin called that answer "too flippant" and suggested the question itself offended her.

“To me the question was more along the lines of, ‘Do you read, what do you guys do up there, what is it that you read?’”

"...Katie, you’re not the center of everybody’s universe," Palin added off-handedly.

Palin, who has long criticized media coverage of her campaign performance, also said she is interested to see if reporters are equally tough on Caroline Kennedy as she pursues the appointment to the likely-vacant Senate seat in New York.

“I’ve been interested to see how Caroline Kennedy will be handled, and if she will be handled with kid gloves or if she will be under such a microscope,” she said.

“It’s going to be interesting to see how that plays out and I think that as we watch that we will perhaps be able to prove that there is a class issue here, also that was such a factor in the scrutiny of my candidacy versus, say, the scrutiny of what her candidacy may be," she also said.

Give me a break. Tina Fey achieved fame because Palin gave her so much great material to work with.

I like the comment that chastizes Palin for 'daring' to compare herself to Caroline Kennedy, then lists as a Kennedy qualification that her mom once was a fashion icon! Too laughable!

If Palin was a moron, so be it. She didn't win, she's not the VP elect.

If Kennedy is a moron, that's a valid issue right now, becuause there is still time for something to happen with her nomination/being a Senator. If Kennedy is not a moron, then she has ample opprotunity to prove it.

Vindictive much, Ms Palin? You will now be the watchdog to make sure all other newcomers get the same grilling you got? Man am I ever so glad you didn't get elected.

I do agree with her on the point about her daughter being off limits, however, never forget, you put your daughter in that position in the first place, when you didn't blink. My hope is that you continue to implode so that come 2012, nobody takes you seriously as a contender for President anymore. Because that would be so sad... that would show me... the problems with society today... where people like you, and Joe the Plummer, get elevated to levels beyond sensibility.

How telling indeed, it is of politicians and what they will do for press time. Palin willingly accepted a guest spot on the very show that parodized her. To now pan it is flaky. Thank you for reminding us how two-faced politicans can be. Oh, yeah, and with all that moronic dribble, we need a good laugh during election time.

What a sore loser. Its Tina and Couric's job to do what they did. This moron fell flat on her face because she is dumb and that is no one else's fault. Trash!

  13. seriously

Stop covering this woman so she goes away.

As for her comments about Caroline Kennedy...I'm pretty sure Caroline is up for a Senate seat. NOT vice president of the US when the guy running for president is not in good health. No offense to NY, but the other 49 states don't really care who your senator will be. But the whole country cares who will be our VP. And we proved that we rather not have a moron.

"Just go away. I hope a polar bear eats her soon!!"

"Well, I'll tell you Sarah, Caroline is smart and you are not. Her mother was known for dressing which made her a fashion icon, you are known for dressing a moose, which makes you an idiot."

I can't believe the stuff some morons post. You complain about Palin but take a look at yourselves.

The SNL comment was not directed towards her daughter or her fiance', nor was it demeaning towards them, it was an implication that Palin was forcing a marriage to appease the religious right.

    - And yes, it was hilarious.

Seriously, when can we STOP hearing about Sarah Palin??? I had hoped she would fall off the face of the earth when the election ended... instead it keeps dragging on and on. The media keeps giving her power by reporting on her every time she sneezes. Please stop! and let us finally be rid of this moron!

If she had such a problem with Fey, why show up on SNL later? Who's exploiting who?

I feel Sarah Palin was treated as a joke by the media, and now she has
every right to try to set the record straight.

:In the interview with Ziegler, Palin called that answer "too flippant" and suggested the question itself offended her..."

She was offended by someone asking what she reads? Maybe because it was nothing!! Palin is too easily offended: and sorry the facts are that her grandson was born out of wedlock while Mom was advocating my child be taught (at great taxpayer expense) abstinence only: and the other grandma is a drug dealer!

Being offended doesn't change the truth!

Tell the Gov .Kennedy hopes to be named a Senator not trying to be a heart beat away from the most powerful position in the world. Do folks ready care in 49 States, doubtful, everyone has enough problems to worry about.
If you trot your kids out on a stage someone will take their shot at them especially given what the Grand Old party is supposed to stand for.
The Gov. is very charisatic and so is Couric. Prior to taking the job as an anchor person she was America's sweetheart. Hard news person, probably not. However, she does talk in sentences and appears educated and qualified for her job. On the other hand, Americans were trying to find out the same thing about the Gov. Unfortunately, many felt she wasn't. So Gov. quit doing interviews, concentrate on serving the people who elected you and at night, read, read and read some more.

Unfair to "attack a kid?" 'Scuse me dearie, but it's not the kid, but her mama who failed the test. Maybe you should'a been paying attention to your parent job instead of ranting about the morals of the rest of us. Oh, by the way, when exactly is this wedding to take place?

    January 8, 2009 03:49 pm at 3:49 pm |

It says more about our society when we have elected officials who can't even make it though a softball interview with Couric without completely fumbling.

Why is this (wo)man still in the news? She obviously cannot handle the fact that she is not at the center of attention anymore!

Please, Sarah, go back to the backwoods of Alaska - where you belong!
