(CNN) - The 5,000 tickets for prime parade viewing spots on Pennsylvania Avenue that went on sale at 1 p.m. Friday were all claimed within minutes, according to the Presidential Inaugural Committee. Some additional seats are being awarded to local students and parents who participated in a committee-sponsored essay contest.

Update: All 5,000 tickets actually sold in less than a minute, Ticketmaster Vice President of Strategic Communications Albert Lopez told CNN's Eric Weisbrod - one of the company's fastest sellouts ever.

I thought we were in a recession! Where are people getting money to buy tickets?

Willy Brown   January 9th, 2009 7:49 pm ET

WIsh I could have set up my Kool -Aid stand so I could sell it to all those saps.

Texas Teacher   January 9th, 2009 7:07 pm ET

I tell you all, I will happily watch from my livingroom! We are making a day of it at my school with lessons to complement the whole affair. This is a history making event, and our students should realize that! :) And share in the experience! They will never forget this day! And so it should be. We want them to be politically savvy... this is the way to lead them in that direction! :)

Bea   January 9th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

I bought them all and will be selling them on E-bay.........:)...No i am kidding. i will be watching my little T.V and enjoying every moment of this great event

boered1   January 9th, 2009 6:51 pm ET

shoot I missed mine!
thank goodness for DVRs!

AJ IN ND   January 9th, 2009 6:51 pm ET

WOW !!!!

John   January 9th, 2009 6:35 pm ET

I got 4 tickets as well - by being online right at 1 pm. But it is horrible that people are trying to make so much money on these tickets. People should just send 100s of emails to anyone selling the tickets and overwhelm their email accts. Or report them for illegal scalping

Dianna, CA   January 9th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

I hope Barack changes the system. You should not be able to buy a ticket and sell it on Ebay. Ebay shouldn't be allowed to sell the tickets. What a sham and a shame.

I tried real hard to get a ticket, but you know what, I'm going to a ball and the swearing in ceremony, so I can't complain. But I will.

I'm just going to walk down to one of the streets and hopefully I'll be able to see something.

pt   January 9th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

I can't believe people would pay money for a ticket. You couldn't pay me to go.

t   January 9th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

people cant afford to buy food and this is how your PE gives us change as in MY change, you people are stupid.

RP Michigan   January 9th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

That's funny.......they sold more than that just in Detroit. And they still have more tickets to sell. And they have buses to take you there.

Money   January 9th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

Keep spending money, it is good for economy!

dm houston   January 9th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

Why would anyone pay money for a ticket? Or even be paid to go?

Miro, MI   January 9th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

I tried, too, but no luck!
But, it's fine. I will just take half day off, and watch at home.
What a wonderfull day for America!!!!!

Shana, Chicago   January 9th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

They must have sold out in one second, because I tried as soon as the clock struck 1:00 (actually I was trying before that too), and I couldn't get any tickets.

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

How many of the tickets were bought by "Tickets Now a TicketMaster company" so they could re-sell them after a gigantic markup?

Aaron   January 9th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

I signed on at 1pm and got 4 tickets...not sure what happened, but everyone else I know got locked out.

freespeech101   January 9th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

can i get a ticket? i would love to go, but i know washington is going to be crazy!!!

GO OBAMA!!! I LOVE THIS COUNTRY!!!!!

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:31 pm ET

@ Barbara – Atlanta

Try Tickets Now....that's the company Ticketmaster uses to buy up tickets with high demand and then resell them at an insane markup.

bk   January 9th, 2009 4:28 pm ET

i wouldn't walk down to the end of the street to see it.

Fred, Washington, dc   January 9th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

My Girlfriend and I both tried getting Inaugural Tickets and she was successful. I guess all of her years of online shopping experience were put to good use :)

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

TICKETMASTER = MONOPOLY.

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:21 pm ET

@ Independent

Including TicketMaster itself. You see, they have another company called Tickets Now and they use it to buy up tickets and then re-sell them at a ridiculous mark-up. It's all part of being the only monopoly in the country that the American people and their government seem happy to allow to exist.

Lauren the Designer   January 9th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

I got two!! Thank you so much for the heads up on this CNN!!!!

Annette   January 9th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

The real reason the tickets sold out in minutes was due to the high tech scalping by ticket brokers like Stage Fronnt Tickets, who miraculously sent out an email at 1257 p.m stating their prices and availability of tickets, when the tickets weren't supposed to start selling until 1:00. Myself and about 20 other friends across the country were calling and logging on to ticketmaster hours before the sale was to start, and were promptly on both at 1:00 and not one of us could get through. This ought to be illegal, because hardworking people who can't afford $00.00 and up for a $25.00 ticket to see history made, will be left out in the cold.

P. Y.   January 9th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

WOW ! Those lucky 5,000 people must have been sitting with the number pre programmed and all they had to hit was " send ". Good for them !
I am going to stay warm and watch the whole thing on TV.

Barbara - Atlanta   January 9th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

I tried...I really want a ticket

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

Lopez was also quoted as saying "but don't worry, we had our subsidiary, Tickets Now, buy almost all of the tickets, so you'll still be able to get one if you can afford $1,000 for it."

Joe in NJ   January 9th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

And tickets are already up for auction on Ebay.

Independent   January 9th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

by the grace of God, i got mine. sadly many are exploiting this and selling them for ridiculous prices.

ga.   January 9th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

i pray for everyone's safety during this historic event.

Laverne   January 9th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

That is right, I tried to get one at 1:02 pmEST and it was too late, Wow, unbelievable!

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

TICKETMASTER HAS A MONOPOLY AND ABUSES IT.

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

Yeah, "Tickets Now, a Ticketmaster Company" bought them all and is now re-selling them for an exorbitant profit.

obbey   January 9th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

I will have to just stay at home and watch it on TV. The tickets are impossible to get. I love the excitement!

Judy   January 9th, 2009 4:04 pm ET

AMAZING .... Wish one of those tickets were mine.
Judy, Texas

margaret b. turner   January 9th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Hmmm...5,000 tickets sold in less than a minute? It would take more time than that for me just to give my billing and shipping information if I were able to purchase a ticket. Could scalpers possibly be at work here? You'll see these tickets posted within the next several days on the internet for outrageous prices. Capitalism at work! What a shame; no opportunity for the "Average Joe or Joanne" to get to see a history making inauguration.

Melinda Ohio   January 9th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

I am excited about the inauguration but how can we be sure Barack Obama will be safe. I mean after the BART shooting and knowing the inaugural routes are full to the limit how can I relax without worrying?

Strange Change Nobody Could Have Counted On   January 9th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

Good luck to the suckers who will be packed like sardines in DC.

Veronica   January 9th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

Of course,no news here

OBAMA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bostonian   January 9th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

I received the eamail from the Presidential Inaugural Committee at 12:52 p.m. EST that the 5,000 tickets were going on sale at 1:00 p.m. EST. What a JOKE...It's an insult. the committee should have sent the email earlier. Of course I tried hard to get a ticket to no avail.

Stephen, Alexandria VA   January 9th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

I got my tickets!!

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   January 9th, 2009 3:29 pm ET

It is OUTRAGEOUS that spots on public streets, or even within public airspace, are being SOLD for the big show for Obama.

I am disgusted.

Who gets that money?

Denise   January 9th, 2009 3:27 pm ET

Congratulations to all of those who got tickets. It will be a wonderful event to behold!!!

James L   January 9th, 2009 3:24 pm ET

Guess America is still For Sale !!!!

TCM   January 9th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

Who cares? It's amazing...we're hiring a total greenhorn, and the country's ga-ga....let him do something....anything....that's worthy of praise...well, he says he cut back on his smoking...I guess that's a start.

Larry in Houston TX   January 9th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

I know this sounds crazy, but I just got a call from a friend of mine, and they are taking their 2 kids, and have already booked a flight going to D.C. for the Inauguration day ceremony......not only that, but they ended up "renting" a 6' X 6' spot on a Lawn for an overnight thing.....in someone's YARD ! I was practically speechless when they told me that they spent $3500.00 (thirty five hundred dollars) for the spot......NOW, that's crazy !!
They are taking Sleeping Bags, for the overnite thing !
WoW !

Sigh.....   January 9th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

I'm sick about it, but I guess I'll have to watch it on TV.

Beth   January 9th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

Well, I just wasted two hours of my life redialing the number for tickets.

anthony brown   January 9th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

sounds like a circus with all the corruption around Obama....I will be at home watching the golf channel on Jan. 20.

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!   January 9th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

MAN I MISSED MY CHANCE TO SEE THE MESSIAH OBAMA!!!!!!

Tasia   January 9th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

My husband and I are spending every last dime we have to fly from southern California to D.C. and stay in a hotel in D.C. for the inauguration. I have been on the phone and online all morning looking for tickets to sit in the cold, on a bleacher for $25 to perhaps, catch a glimpse of Obama's motorcade... This is all fine and dandy... its what I signed up for.

But when I go on Craigslist and within minutes of the tickets going on sale, see people offering $500-$1000 each for $25 tickets I am truly disgusted. There is a difference between trying to make a profit and just ripping people off... so much for an Inauguration for the People.

Brian   January 9th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Why would you only offer 5,000 tickets for an event that millions of American's want to attend?

Future POTUS   January 9th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

I wonder which tickets sold out faster, the inaugaral one's or Jay Z's.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   January 9th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Bloggers like myself deserve those tickets. We spent tireless hours blogging back and forth defending our Democratic Party and president-elect Obama. Give us some kind of recognition.

Mari   January 9th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Not surprised, regardless of what the nay sayers say, President-elect Obama's election was a .... loud shout.... from we, the People, which clearly said CHANGE IS NEEDED! And we are thrilled to have new leadership and a new start during these difficult times. Remember folks no matter who much gloom and doom is predicted..........

HOPE WON.......... HOPE WON.......... HOPE WON........... HOPE WON!

WE CAN AND WE WILL GET THROUGH THIS AND COME THROUGH STRONGER AND MORE UNITED AS A PEOPLE AND AS A NATION!

Proud American   January 9th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Wow republicans what does that tell you?

Big dee of MD   January 9th, 2009 2:29 pm ET

I tried to purchase tickets at 1:00 p.m. exactly and was advised none were availiable... Then I tried a second, third, and fourth time all within two minutes.
I am now starting to believe they were never availiable and the sale was just posted to claim tickets were offered to the public. What a joke!

Marsha   January 9th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Did anyone else outside of D.C./Northern Virgina have problems accessing online.

Honey   January 9th, 2009 2:05 pm ET

Would you guys tell her to go away if her last name was Kennedy? Just asking....

Rev. Wright   January 9th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

See you there!

Charlie in Maine   January 9th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Finally we will stop speculating and start seeing Obama in action. I firmly believe that he will do quite well.

Coming after George W Bush is a double edge sword. On the one hand the mess we are in is deep and wide, on the other hand the bar of Prseidential performance has been set to it lowest level ever.

Good luck Mr. President (I'm sure you will need it.)

Jon M.   January 9th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

I was able to get four, and am ready for an amazing parade!!!

wendy   January 9th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

I think the process was a joke! I would like to know if one just every day normal person was able to get tickets. If you did, I would love to hear from you.

ArtVandelay   January 9th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

...and already on Craigslist. I knew it was a long shot but at least I gave it a try
