From

(CNN) - President-elect Barack Obama has requested that the words “so help me God” be added to the end of the oath of office to be administered by Chief Justice John Roberts on Inauguration Day.

That confirmation came in an affidavit filed today by Roberts' court counselor in a pending lawsuit by an atheist opposed to any mention of God in the inaugural ceremonies. Roberts said he would abide by Obama’s wishes.

The Constitution has specific language on what has to be said when swearing in the president, but the “so help me God” phrase has traditionally been added at the end of the required oath, starting with George Washington in 1789.

To No Hillary = No Obama:

You in my opinion are a worthless troll. You constantly post meaningless drivel all for the sake of venting your worthless rage. Here is a thought; why not get a grip and join the human race. Otherwise, please stop using up precious oxygen that could be used for someone who will “positively” contribute to mankind.

You're right... how can evolution possibly exist. Why would we actually want to look at countless examples of physical evidence of evolution when we have a bible to tell us what really happened. You're right.. very funny.

Chris   January 9th, 2009 9:04 pm ET

Am I the only agnostic who really doesn't care about this? It's a few words and, quite frankly, it is unimportant whether or not they are included.

The left loones are going to go ape.

Lefty loones, Obama believes in God.

Oh, you crazy Christians... You sinners better get in lock step and follow your divine orders. Feel the guilt, baby. Feel it!! Your god commands it of you!

jim   January 9th, 2009 8:59 pm ET

I'm an atheist and I don't have a problem with the inauguration proceeding as planed.
Freedom of religion is about protecting people from having beliefs forced on them, not shielding them from ideas they disagree with.

mlaiuppa   January 9th, 2009 8:54 pm ET

The Constitution states what language must be used. However, it doesn't prohibit additional language.

If Obama wants to say "So help me God" he will and no one is going to stop him. And his oath won't be nullified for adding the phrase.

113   January 9th, 2009 8:38 pm ET

Ugh, of course Obama had to have this added because the conservative christians would make this an election issue in 2012.

There should be no mention of anyone's god in a government ceremony period. He should be saying something like "So help me Founders."

Marino   January 9th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

What if he said :
- So help me Gods
or
- So help me Goddess

You Christians would be all up in arms!

Jim   January 9th, 2009 8:37 pm ET

If Obama wants the Chief Justice to add "so help me God" to the oath, then it is his right to make that request, and it should be honored. If , "so help me God" was a required part of the oath (which it is not,) then I would be angry. I think that government should remain 100% neutral on religious matters. God and faith (or the lack thereof) are personal matters and our elected official and bureaucrats should stay as far away from such matters as possible.

I look forward to the day - probably thousands of years from now - when humanity advances to a new stage of enlightenment and realizes that the words and rituals of the world's major religions have no place in our world. Faith in a higher power (if there is one) is an intensenly personal matter. Unfortunately, religious institutions large and small, and the blind people who believe that the Bible is the word of God, when it really is a collection of man made legends, fables and fairy tales (that people will interpret to meet their own needs), continue to be our planet's most destructive force.

Ken in NC   January 9th, 2009 8:33 pm ET

This is a "NO WIN" situation. If PE Obama does not use the term "SO HELP ME GOD" there those among us that will say he refused to say it because he is Muslim. If he does say it there are those among us that say it has no place in public.

He can't win that one so why don't we just let it go because either way he does it, some are going to make something of it that it is not.

The united states needs to join the rest of the world in secularism, and stop involving god in the state. I mean come on we call ourselves a secular nation, and yet we've forced the Native American's off their land for White Christiane Settlers, and forcefully converted them to Christianity. We have the word god on all our coins. The word god appears in almost every Federal building, yet we call ourselves a secular and tolerant nation. Freedom of religion is completely false, I mean look at how we've treated non Christan's. Killing them, taking their children and converting them. But only some Christan's are good, because if your Catholic your going to hell, if your Mormon your going to hell, if your Orthodox your going to hell. It's completely mental!

Josh   January 9th, 2009 8:06 pm ET

As long as Obama does not say "So help me God the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost, in the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen" I don't see what the big deal is. I'm an agnostic, like many of the Founding Fathers, and much like the references to "God" in the Declaration and other early works, I don't see the use of the word "God" as in any way offensive. He is not directly referencing any faith, and in fact, it can easily be taken that he is invoking the "God of Nature" whom the Founders – Jefferson, Franklin, etc – revered, not the strictly Christian God.

I think that those of us who are NOT Christian need to take a step back and look at ourselves long and hard, because many of us are beginning to sound a LOT like the same people we vilify in our dogmatic approach to faith.

If we don't believe in God – from a Christian or other perspective – that is our right, no matter how much the Religious Zealots of the American Taliban might try to change things. However, we must also accept that belief in a God is also a right protected by the Constitution, no matter how much the Athiest Zealots wish it were otherwise.

paul (staunch Moderate)   January 9th, 2009 7:59 pm ET

Oh, fer cryin out loud! There is nothing more elementary-school than this argument. Separation of church and state has nothing to do with inauguration oaths, or words printed on money, or commandments displayed in courthouses, or words within the Pledge of Allegiance. It has to do with enacting and enforcing laws based upon ones religious beliefs. When will these bufoons stop this insanity?

Connie from Indiana   January 9th, 2009 7:51 pm ET

Obama has a right to choose what is said. To all of you who believe in the separation of church and state when you become prez you can choose also. For myself when I am in need I go to GOD, not the state. I still believe in miracles.

Gail Los Angeles   January 9th, 2009 7:48 pm ET

Thank you God that President Elect Obama is both a Democrat and a Christian. The public hasn't heard from the Christian Democrats since Jimmy Carter. Check out what the Carter Center has done if you want to know what Christians believe in doing. Christian are called to help the poor and promote social justice. They are to love their neighbors as themselves and promote peace with Everyone.

People all across America are praying they can pay their bills. Obama will need all our prayers to succeed.

SM   January 9th, 2009 7:47 pm ET

ram "Obama just lost my support." Aw gosh. If the fact that he is a Christian bothers you, then I doubt he ever HAD your support. I admire him for trying to make the ceremony personal for himself...whatever he decided would upset somebody.
This whole "separation" stuff is garbage anyway. If we elect a Christian, he should be driven by the teachings of his faith (not sure what George W learned in his churches over the years, but I doubt torture and war were endorsed highly.) I respected Jimmy Carter for always living his beliefs while he was President. I know some people think he was terrible, but he's the last true man of faith we elected. Peace is not some code word for "strike first, peace later." The last 8 years have proven that a Godless man is even worse for the country, hasn't it? Think of all the Americans killed on his watch...and tortured, and spied upon. Those are not acts of Christian faith, nor any other.

peter   January 9th, 2009 7:40 pm ET

this is soo stupid and makes me feel so caustic! we should not take that out because of some stupid athiest! if you do not beleive, just dont watch! Obama is a christian, so it should be up to him to use that phrase or not. im an Obama supporter and also a christian, however, i could careless if he uses the phrase or not. the choice should be Obama's and NO ONE else. us americans are such WHINERS!! whine about stupid stuff all the time....

Sally   January 9th, 2009 7:37 pm ET

I'm still trying why people say seperation of church and state when US Currency says "In God we Trust" printed on it which of course if backed by the US Governmant.

So, why shouldn't Obama say the word "God" if that's what he believes in?

Meh   January 9th, 2009 7:32 pm ET

Raul> Yes, that's exactly it. And?

olusola> The Founding Fathers were Deists, so yes, they did recognize that there was a god...however, they (i.e. – Jefferson) thought it best that religion and government be kept separate. And I agree w. them.

That being said, if Obama's a Christian, he has every right to use the oath. Why not? I'm Agnostic, but I'm not going to freak out if someone else chooses to exercise their freedom of religion in front of me.

Linda from Minnesota   January 9th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

No matter what he says, someone will criticize him. People, if what he says bothers you, you need a life or a hobby or something. Geez, focus on stuff thats important and quit quibbling over non-issues. He's a Christian, let him say it and IF he were a Muslim, let him say something about Allah. I thought we were a country of free speech.

I did not support Obama, but I do believe he has a right to say "so help me God" if he wants and I do hope and pray he is a good president. We have freedom of religion, not freedom from religion in this country and if an atheist ever gets elected, he can choose not to say it if he wants. People need to stop forcing their beliefs on others. We need to learn to agree to disagree and live in peace.

Charlie   January 9th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

Firstly, it is a tradition for "so help me god" to be included in the presidential oath. Secondly, there is a huge difference between honouring a tradition inherent in our government and having a firm belief in an additional unnecessary phrase. I've never heard any fuss directed toward a president for honouring the tradition of having a dog in the White House, one tradition also dating back to our first president. Are there not people who dislike dogs in a similar way an atheist would dislike a mentioning of God?

Additionally, the First Amendment states "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof". The fact that he wishes to say "so help me God" and there are people arguing that he should not say it is direct violation of his own First Amendment right to be able to say it. Therefore, no matter how angry athiests, agnostics, or non Judeo-Christian-Muslim worshipers are at the statement, it would be worse for him to give up his Constitutional right to say the phrase because it goes against that which we all hold so dear. Thus, the old adage "I may not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it".

Perhaps, we should all think about how important this issue is in the scheme of life.

I think it is entirely up to Obama to use those words. He is a Christian, so that is the name he would use. And that is just fine with me, though I am not a Christian. I would say Creator! so what!

Don   January 9th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

The U.S. Constitution prohibits the government from establishing an official state religion, as was the case in Europe when America became independent. Actually, this was revolutionary and profound for its time, and humanity has the United States to thank for establishing this precedent.

Our Constitution also prohibits the government from prohibiting the free practice of religion. In other words, nobody can tell you when you can or cannot pray or make reference to God. All Americans have total freedom in this regard.

Nowhere is the term 'separation of church and state' ever used.

You also have the right not to believe. It seems a small minority just aren't satisfied with having the right to be antheists. They insist that everyone around them refrain from any reference to God or religion. It is not like they are trying to stop repression of their beliefs. Actually, the inverse is true, they are trying to repress the free expression of beliefs and free pratices of the vast majority. It is like saying, you can't tell me what to believe, but, being more enlightened, I definitely get to tell you what you can say and do.

Public officials cannot establish an official state church. However, like the rest of us, they are free to make reference to religion as much as they want. That is their constitutional right. If President-Elect Obama is told that he can't use the term 'so help me God', than his right to freely exercise his faith would have been prohibited, which is a violation of our Constitution.

Obambi   January 9th, 2009 6:28 pm ET

OBAMA I FOR ONE AM VERY PROUD AND EXCITED ABOUT YOU AS OUR PRESIDENT. TO ALL OBAMA SUPPORTERS KEEP THE PRAYERS CHAIN GOING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Kev   January 9th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

Muslims do in fact believe in God, in case you didn't know. So that would make no difference. But is being Christian any better?

Eric   January 9th, 2009 6:05 pm ET

Come on Obama, you're a smart guy. You don't need to pander to all those who believe in a God in this country. Have some balls, represent all Americans, not just the ones who believe in their imaginary friend in the sky.

Pepou   January 9th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

He needs more than God's help to clean up the mess left by Bush.

MK   January 9th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

Obama is very respectful of traditions and history. I am so happy that he will be our new leader. I do agree that he will never prove to the crazies that he is a Christian but HE knows it and that is all that will ever matter.

olusola   January 9th, 2009 6:02 pm ET

Adding "so help me God" is not unwarranted. American founding founders acknowledged God, and so also some of us in this generation. For those who need to know, if God will not president Obama, then he might not make any impact . " For with God all things are possible".

John Holdt   January 9th, 2009 6:01 pm ET

It isn't about being Muslim Carlo. Its about moving past medieval teachings regardless of whether we call it Islam, Christianity, Judaism or any of the other made up gods and religions. Its time the U.S. joined the rest of the western world in rejecting this nonsense by proclaiming itself fully secular. Christianity, Islam, its all made-up nonsense.

obama's the one   January 9th, 2009 6:01 pm ET

He's gonna need God's help with the mess George Bush left him. I for one will be praying for him.

Kruz   January 9th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

I would like to say so what... I am an atheist and very, very against religion in the government. But he is a Christian and if he wants so say 'so help me god' let him. Can someone explain where there is a problem?

ram   January 9th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Osama just lost my support. He is no different than all of the others – at least W had the decency to let us know where he stood.

It's The Ronald   January 9th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

He's going to need it!

sandee in Portland   January 9th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Good for him. Why should anything be changed to satisfy the demands of a few. If you don't believe, don't watch; then it won't bother you because you won't hear the words.

A Woman In California For Obama   January 9th, 2009 5:51 pm ET

I think that is a good thing. Please keep that in your oath. God knows you will need him.

Avon Lady   January 9th, 2009 5:50 pm ET

It's news because some athiest wants it removed, and Obama wants to keep it, not that Obama is trying to call attention to it. Oh, and I am NOT an Obama suporter, I didn't vote for HIM, but I support the president of my country, and in less than 2 weeks, that will be Obama. I sure hope he does his office justice.

Jacob-Kevin   January 9th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

I'm so sick of the right side making news out of petty and rediculous pieces of information. They're really working hard at trying to make Obama look like a Godless Democrat.

Holly   January 9th, 2009 5:48 pm ET

I'm a huge Obama supporter, but I don't think religion, invocations, and "so help me God" should play any part in the inauguration of our president. If he wants to personally and privately swear by his god, that's obviously his choice, but all this bible stuff doesn't belong in this civil ceremony.

No Hillary = No Obama   January 9th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

Obama does not ring true for me and everything he says impresses as either: 1. ingratiating or 2. self-aggrandizing

Objective thinking   January 9th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

John Roberts was appointed by Bush, so Bush-bashing in 3... 2... 1...

Leah DiMarco, Texas   January 9th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

cario – because a lawsuit was filed to prevent Obama from saying 'so help me God' THAT is why it is news. And now we know that Justice Roberts will add the phrase per Obama's wishes.
God bless our new President and his family!

Rachel   January 9th, 2009 5:44 pm ET

Yes, let them keep searching for the birth cerfificate. Gives them something to do. Now all the Athiests will have something to belly ache about or sue. What a world we live in. I think it's time we sue them for tring to take our rights away!

Robin   January 9th, 2009 5:41 pm ET

I didn't vote for him, but people, for goodness sake, he is not a Muslim.

And even if he was, so what? There is a HUGE difference between a peaceful Muslim practicing his religion and an extremist who wants to destroy democracy.

Let the hate go, Democrats and Republicans alike. Our future is in this man's hands. If he fails, we are in for a time worst then you can imagine.

Lisa   January 9th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

He wants to say it, there's nothing wrong with that. He wants to say "so help me God". The oath is for Barack to acknowledge in front of the American people and he wants to say it. He wants God's help. End of story, move on.

Jared   January 9th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

Thanks, Carlo. I feel that the same non-news was reported when we learned that Obama would be sworn in as Barack Hussein Obama, not some kind of embrace of Islamic extremism (as some persist to allege), but rather the tradition.

Georgia Peach   January 9th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

Carlo I agree I agree with you. Those neocons will never get off the Muslim garbage they spewed. I pray "so help him God "to protect him from the spewings of Gov. Palin and Rush alike beings who have forgotten their first love of the Jesus Christ they say they serve and never knew ,for they would not do the things they do.May God be with us all in the next years to come........for it will not be an easy time for most of us especially Pres. Obama when the GOP already has decided to put nothing but stumbling blocks up, no matter who it will hurt in our nation......as long as they can be the catalyst of defeat of others trying to make a honest living....they rally don't care.

Lisa, MD   January 9th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

"So help all of us God", for those who don't want Obama as our President and continuing to false accuse him.

Parsipany   January 9th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

All monotheistic religions would add" so help me god." What does this have to do with Islam vs. Christianity?

I do wish, however, that Barack would have left it out. The separation of Church and State should be the first step in repairing Bush's damage.. As Sir Tijn Po's says in COMING SOON, "until people give up the old prophecies there is no chance for peace!"

CAMI   January 9th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

To Carlo and Robert, SC: I agree with both of you about there being no hope for those who still think that PEBO is a Muslim. I just wonder how many posts there will be from them, wondering which "God" he'll be referring to during the swearing in. (If I could I'd insert some rolling eyes here.) LOL

forAMERICA   January 9th, 2009 5:29 pm ET

Fat chance, unless we finally get solid funding of education. Because Lord knows they aren't getting their stellar comprehension abilities from their elders.

This country is amazing. We underfund education starting in the early 80's and wonder why everyone in this country is so #@$%&! stupid.

kelly   January 9th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

To Old hand. Even if Washington didn't say it, most presidents have. And if Obama wants to say that phrase, shouldn't he have the same freedom of speech to do so. I think its sad there was even a lawsuit. It isn't going to kill the atheists for the words "so help me God" or a prayer to be uttered.

Lori   January 9th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

Presidents-elect may choose to include or eliminate "God" in their swearing in. Obama is a practicing Christian - contrary to the GOP lies and smears - and he chooses to include God. So be it.

I would do the same, but I would respect anyone who chose not to include the God reference. To each his own.

David, NY   January 9th, 2009 5:25 pm ET

I guess we should all be relieved that god will take matters into his own hands if Obama doesn't abide by his oath. Unlike our current President, I really hope he isn't leaving it all up to god's will.

Obama should ask for God's help. He will need it.

dionne   January 9th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

The true purpose and meaning of this phrase has been lost - appropriated often even in a vengeful manner. Originally it was meant to invoke guidance and suppport, as in, "I'm going to do my best, so [please] help me, God." The comma, the pause and the humble request for God's help make a difference ... and we certainly need that at this time.

Troy Kendal   January 9th, 2009 5:17 pm ET

Isn't it ironic, don't you think.....when the entire country is saying "so help me Obama".

Carlo, Raleigh NC   January 9th, 2009 5:16 pm ET

Seriously, I wish athiests would just back off and accept that not all of us beleive there is no god... Why don't they just take comfort from the fact that a religious politition, like obama, would swear his oath on a bible and ask gods help in fulfilling the oath... Seriously, it would consern me if a politition claiming to be a religious man optend not to swear on the bible (or appropirate religious text) and not ask gods help faithfully executing the oath of their office. It would demonstrait that the individual has a rather disingeneous character.

More over, I wish that athiests would remember that the seperation of church and state wasn't put into the bill of rights to promot athiesm. That would actually be a violation of the spirit of the bill, rather it was put in place to protect individuals rights to worship (or not) as they see fit. So, it is actually there, for instance, to protect Obama's right to swear in on a bible and use the phrase "so help me god".

Talk about smarter? This is not the repubs, its Atheists and other groups who don't believe in God that brought the Law Suit. I did not vote for him but He got this one right. Get the facts before you blame the wrong people.

RP Michigan   January 9th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

There is no evidence that George Washington DIDN'T say 'so help me God.' He was a strong believer in God's Providence in his life.

Tim   January 9th, 2009 5:11 pm ET

What the atheist doesn't understand is that its Obama's choice to say "So Help Me God". Some presidents say it, some don't. No on is mandating that it must be said.

I think it's news because there is an athiest trying to get that phrase out of the swearing in. Obama is making sure it's known he wants it in there. So, an athiest shouldn't be able to push his beliefs on someone that wants to say the phrase. Way to go Obama. I didn't vote for you, but I'm proud of you.

"God" could mean a divine being, the Universe, Higher Power, etc. Personally, I don't like religious zealots of any sort, but Obama's saying the word "God" is really no big deal. As a matter of fact, his use of the word "God" just shows that he knows how to be humble and realize that there are higher powers greater than he.

dEMOBRAT   January 9th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

If Obama (or anyone else for that matter) wants to publicly state that they believe in fairy tales, they should be allowed. I personally find it disheartening that any of government officials buy into the talking snake/immaculate conception scheme, but who am I to tell someone that they can't believe in Santa Claus?

NATHAN   January 9th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

Spare me the drama......   January 9th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

Well said Carlo! I really think we as Americans need to dispense with all this useless drama and put our energies toward conquering the many challenges that lay ahead of us. Last I checked, God wasn't the type to come swooping in and lay down some Thou Shalts in regard to the economy. But as I see it, asking for God's help never hurt anyone. That 25% that Carlos referred to ought to try it!! :)

Gina, Baltimore, Maryland   January 9th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Carlo, you are absolutely right. For those of you who are convinced he's a Muslim, if that were true, I'm sure the republican bloodhounds would have found out. They are a ruthless bunch.

So lets pray that all of our elected leaders can listen for word of the Almighty so we can survive as a nation.

Emmanuel   January 9th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Carlo and Robert are right and I wonder what will be the GOP strategy in 2012 when they go against Obama. Shame on them if they feel the president is a terrorists the world will laugh at them after knowing Obama. Mark my words 2012 will spell the doom of the GOP for a long time and it will take Bobby Jindal to rescue that party called Grand Old People.

Caroline Kennedy for NYS Senate   January 9th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

If the President wants to say "So help me God." at the end of the oath, he has every prerogative to do so.

Sometimes there is NO difference between some liberal-minded folks and the far right people they (we?) seem to despise and deride so much.

I happen to have pretty liberal views. I also happen to be a Christian woman. I have to say, all of the liberal atheists I have come across are most irrationally closed-minded self-righteous to individuals who don't share their [non]-religious views... One person even told me that she disliked Sarah Palin because "she's a nativist".... How was that different from the far right people not voting for Obama because they thought he was muslim? Let's face it. We are bound to come across people who have different views and live differently from us. Deal with it constructively.

Mike   January 9th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Nick   January 9th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

Judy   January 9th, 2009 4:49 pm ET

Current and historical polls have indicated that U.S. citizens consider their country to be a Christian country; the country was founded by Christian people who wanted to preserve the right of it's citizens to have FREEDOM OF RELIGION (as opposed to freedom from religion, as is so frequently mis-stated). It is a horrendous situation that the many are dictated to by the very few and it is wonderful to see our new president show the courage of his beliefs and convications. May God preserve and protect President Obama!

Sean   January 9th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

Washington? Might want to check your facts, CNN. All contemporary sources have no mention of Washington adding "so help me god" to the presidential oath. The earliest reference we have that mentions Washington supposedly saying the phrase comes from Washington Irving *sixty-five years* after George Washington's inauguration.

Indy   January 9th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

It's news because a few Athiests were trying to make it an issue and take it to court. This has nothing to do with Repubs. I like Obama. I believe he is a Christian – though it shouldn't matter anyway. We are not all lemmings so stop trying to make it a partisan play when it someone else making a court case.

Matt   January 9th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

@ Carlo

Actually, Muslims use the word "God" to refer to Allah too. Fact is, it's all a non-issue other than for the whiney crybabies who think the mention of God violates the separation of church and state. In reality, this is just tradition and whatever the one taking the oath wants to swear on because they hold it dear and feel it shows the truth of their intent to uphold the oath, I say let 'em say it.

vet   January 9th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

So let's see the birth certificate then. It's news because people are suprised he's actually going to keep the status quo instead of changing something to keep the spot light on himself.

Proud American   January 9th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

Gene   January 9th, 2009 4:43 pm ET

It's Obama's inauguration. Why would someone sue over what Obama wants to say? I'm an atheist myself but some of these people pushing for religion or pushing against religion are insane. Can't people just accept that different people have different beliefs, and if it's not hurting anyone, let them be?

I'll be surprised if I don't see ignorant comments here stating that Obama should be asking to end the inauguration with "So help me Allah" :)

Aimee   January 9th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

Desmond in Virginia   January 9th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

To Carlo, did you read the story. It said, "That confirmation came in an affidavit filed today by Roberts' court counselor in a pending lawsuit by an atheist opposed to any mention of God in the inaugural ceremonies. Roberts said he would abide by Obama’s wishes". People look for a twist/spin in everything. And we say politicians and media do all the spinning...go to foxnews.com. I think the reading is more to your liking there!

GET REAL.   January 9th, 2009 4:36 pm ET

Howsincere you are in your swearing in is directly tied to your belief systems, so let him say it. I'm an agnostic, and I wouldn't need the phrase to be just as sincere, but if it helps bolster his resolve and the public believes him, go for it.

I also don't mind him allowing those beliefs to guide him to good choices in office, as long as he stays objective and listens to all sides of an issue. Religion is at its worst when it closes minds. And chances are that a closed mind will also feel the need to shove its religion in other people's faces.

I'll end off by saying some Christians in America are just as zealous about this sort of thing as the people we're fighting overseas. They just don't think so becuase they don't let it get physical. Same poison, different symptoms.

Yeah, this'll get posted. CNN allows violent outbursts, but almost never reasoned upset.

Cindy   January 9th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

Barack Obama is a spiritual man. So what if he wants God's help? If this has been added since George Washington, why not by Barack Obama?

I am not spiritual, but I see no reason to deny someone who is, his added phrase concerning his faith. My main concern would be if he wasn't spiritual, and he was being pressured to add it in. That day will come... in the future. But not this time.

Robert, SC   January 9th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

Even if he was Muslim, so what. There is a big difference between a peaceful Muslim practicing his religion and an extremist trying to destroy democracy.

As far as his birth certificate, move on, who cares. We have bigger fish to fry and he has a large order to fill with all of those campaign promises he made.

If he fails, ( I don't want him too, America can't afford that) the media will turn on him quicker then you can imagine.

I'm an atheist, I think everyone has the right to believe what they want. If Obama believes in God and wants to include these words, then that is just fine with me.

The only thing we ALL should be against is when someone/anyone tries to FORCE their beliefs/non-beliefs.

Obama sticks to his convictions – he believes in God so I think him asking for his God's blessing is a good thing. He's not forcing anyone else to believe in anything, religious-wise.

Please don't equivocate the stupid actions of that jerk atheist in California to the rest of the atheists in the world. Trying to prevent others from practicing their religion is just as bad as forcing them.

I am so thankful for this. So many people talk down about him. I have prayed so hard for him. I believe he is a good man. I wish others believed in him. We need to Pray for him and our "Country to got back to God. Lets all make a vow to Pray for him every day and I know the Lord will bless him and us.

"But... but.... but... Obama didn't want to say the pledge of allegiance and is a Muslin."

Booyah! Conservative White Neo-Con America!

Bambi Goes to Washington   January 9th, 2009 4:25 pm ET

I'll be saying, "God help us all" as Obama takes the oath.

Vigla   January 9th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

No big deal, guys. If he wants to say it, he can. It's his oath. However, should a future President not wish to say it, then they shouldn't have to...

Proud Democrat.   January 9th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

Good for him!

I guess we need to get ready for all the crazies who are going to start objecting over the language.

Someone needs to tell them to fall in line and get over it!

carlo   January 9th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Well, if it has always been added, why is this news? Oh, yeah, you're trying to inform the 25% that thinks he's a Muslim? There's no hope for them. They're still searching for his "real" birth certificate.
