Robinson, with son-in-law Barack Obama on Election Night.

(CNN) - Three generations of the new First family will move into the White House on Inauguration Day.

The Obama transition confirmed to CNN Friday that Marian Robinson, Michelle Obama's mother, will live in the White House for several months while she decides if she wants to make a permanent move to Washington.

Robinson retired from her job as a bank secretary to help with the care of her granddaughters during the presidential campaign.

She wouldn't be the first Robinson presidential mother-in-law to live on the White House grounds
for at least some length of time. Other mother-in-laws - most notably, Harry Truman's - have lived for a time on White House grounds.

Clifford, you're an idiot. What does a cotton plantation have to do with a blog about a basic fundamental of supporting a family? Many families use relatives in the same manner. I suppose you are a lonely miserable low life without friends and family. That is why you are so full of hate.

Liam   January 9th, 2009 10:51 pm ET

I don't see why it should be an issue for anyone. I think that it's a great symbol of generational family unity. Oh,... and I mean for the Obamas and not me. I'd have to purchase a handgun and learn to use it before sticking it in my mouth if my mother-in-law moved in. Not that I don't really love her or anything, just that...

OBAMA IS SO FULL OF IT   January 9th, 2009 7:35 pm ET

And it goes on and on and on...................

SMR   January 9th, 2009 7:31 pm ET

Thats great, more support to the kids that have very busy parents. That way nobody can say they are neglected. What a great family

Independent FL voter   January 9th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

People are objecting to this? Seriously? If the grandmother doesn't stay the Obamas would have to employ a nanny. How much do you think that would cost?

For thise that ahve a problem with this, I'm guessing you didn't like Palin either, since the taxpayers of the state of Alaska had to pay for her minor daughters jetting all over the country with her.

Help is just a phone call away...

Texas Teacher   January 9th, 2009 7:22 pm ET

A Woman in Calif. for Obama... :) I suspect that the White House is large enough that the Obama's can have as much privacy as they want. The Grandmother might want some herself! Speaking as a Grandmother who dotes on her grandchildren!

Ravi in MO   January 9th, 2009 7:21 pm ET

This is wonderful news! I am so proud of Barack and Michelle for doing the right thing and allowing this loving grandmother (and just an all around great lady) to live them in the White House. Now I know that the two first daughters-to-be will have someone who's there to look out for them and guide them.

Puff   January 9th, 2009 7:20 pm ET

Actually Robert, you are the racist. I will say anything I want about BO, that is my right. I can say anything I want about any president and have done so. His being black has nothing to do with it.
That's why you are the racist dearie. Crawl back into your hole. Oh, and take that granny with you.

Texas Teacher   January 9th, 2009 7:19 pm ET

Robert January 9th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Great! Somone else getting free rent using my tax dollars!
-------------------------

You can't think of anything else to complain about? How would you like a paid nanny, huh? You are not using that brain between your ears, man!

All the Grandmother will cost the nation is her meals! I'm telling you.... some people just defy the notion of intelligent, logical thinking... :(

Texas Teacher   January 9th, 2009 7:16 pm ET

This is a wonderful example for the country. Parents and Grandparents need to be honored for the important role the share in the family circle! Those girls will have her love and care while Mom and Dad are busy doing their job. That is what family is all about.

I'm proud of the Obama's! :)

Yo Mama-in-Law   January 9th, 2009 7:13 pm ET

This is so exciting. She's just like Rose Kennedy, you know? We're having Camelot all over again. God bless all of us in this grate countree of ares.

Erica from GA   January 9th, 2009 7:08 pm ET

For those of you that there is a charge per person to live in the White House, you sound a little ignorant. I guess you all would prefer they hire a nanny to help care for the girls. You guys are crazy, deranged. Get over yourselves.

marie   January 9th, 2009 7:05 pm ET

Thats a good idea you need someone you can trust with your children.

Robert   January 9th, 2009 7:03 pm ET

Typical response from the Obama lover's, anyone who says anything critical of him is automatically labeled a "racist".

Eugene   January 9th, 2009 7:01 pm ET

More great family values from a family whom most Americans already feel great affection for. Waytogo Obamas!

Robert   January 9th, 2009 7:00 pm ET

I've got no problem with her moving into the White House to take care of the kids, but it shouldn't be "on my dime".

Lori   January 9th, 2009 6:59 pm ET

I thought Republicans were for family values? Isn't that why it was o.k for Bristol to have a child out of wedlock? Why are they complaining now? Hypocrits!!!

Obama, let the haters live on the fringes of society and willow away in misery. YOU WON!!! Best of luck with the mother-in-law and hurry up and take office!!!

Dee Dee   January 9th, 2009 6:58 pm ET

This is not the first time and in-law or other relatives has lived in the white house. No she is not gonna get paid and the children deserve to be taken care of by a family member not a nanny....so you ignorant people out there get over it!

Joe   January 9th, 2009 6:57 pm ET

There's an old saying. Better to keep your mouth shut and let people just think you're an idiot as opposed to saying something and proving their point. Rick and some of the others on here who have nothing good to say would be wise to realize that rule also applies to blogging.

If these "haters" took a moment to check the facts, they would see that the First Family must reimburse the government on a per person basis for each person who resides or stays at the White House. So, it will be the Obama family (not the taxpayers) who will be footing the bill for Mrs. Robinson to reside (at least temporarily) with the family at the White House.

Chris in Va.   January 9th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Working gal huh...........I'll give you your $20 to just go away!!!

sunoverla   January 9th, 2009 6:53 pm ET

are the taxpayers footing her bill?

Rob   January 9th, 2009 6:50 pm ET

Don't you mean 'Mothers-in-law'? Geez.

By the way, the guys new job requires him to live in an employer-owned residence. The residence portion of the White House is his home. His family is allowed to live there. Having his mother-in-law move in to help with the kids is hardly radical stuff.

Patty from Pennsylvania   January 9th, 2009 6:49 pm ET

Anyone who thinks this is a bad thing has no family values!

YVONNE-KENTUCKY   January 9th, 2009 6:40 pm ET

DON'T BE SUCH A HATER JUST THINK NINE YEARS FROM NOW YOU WILL GET YOUR CHANCE TO VOTE SARA P IN OFFICE. lol BY THE WAY IT'S ABOUT HIS MOTHER -IN -LAW NOT HIS AUNT. I'AM SURE IF HIS AUNT GETS ANY SPECIAL TREATMENT PEOPLE LIKE YOU AND JOE THE PLUMBER & RUSH LIMBAUGH WILL SHOUT IT FROM THE MOUNTAIN TOP. YOU SEE THAT'S WHAT HATERS DO!!

Ellie   January 9th, 2009 6:38 pm ET

GOD BLESS her... her grandkids would be the blessed angels. I wish all GRANDMOTHERS could play a part in raising their grandchildren, the WORLD we be all the more better and blessed for it..

PA   January 9th, 2009 6:30 pm ET

I think it's a wonderful idea. It is very obvious that the Obama/Robinson family are a loving, caring unit. How wonderful it would be if all married couples had a Mother In Law that could move in be there for her grandchildren and all could cohabitate together happily. Just another example of how this family can demonstrate peace, love and acceptance to the world. I wish them All the Best.

Bud Burgoon-Clark   January 9th, 2009 6:26 pm ET

All you Obama-haters need to get a life. The Obamas need Mrs. Robinson; the GIRLS need their grandmother. Get over yourselves. Your comments are both ignorant and racist.

Rick   January 9th, 2009 6:26 pm ET

Whats next, bring in all the family on our tax dollars, maybe its time to ask for government help so my faimly can move back in to use the tax dollarsto support them ...

Matt   January 9th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

Where is your Auntie staying Obama? Still in this country how convienient. Let me guess you will get right on that deportation order right away I'm sure.

Beverly, NH   January 9th, 2009 6:14 pm ET

Mrs. Robinson will keep Barack grounded, also the children will have the same routine. I think it's a great idea. Michelle will travel better, knowing her mom is there to help out with the kids.

Great idea, super mom-in-law and beautiful family.

Quit moderation   January 9th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

I doubt it will cost the taxpayers money. I mean I do not think they need to put an addition on the WHite House to fit her in.

Jenny, DC   January 9th, 2009 6:12 pm ET

How you do Mrs. Robinson....

Welcome to Washington, D.C.
Welcome, welcome, welcome.

Hey, I hear you just have to pick up the phone and tell them what you would like to eat. I hope you grow to like the accommodations, and I hope you will stay.

MK   January 9th, 2009 6:08 pm ET

All kids need adults that love them around them, these girls included. I am glad their family all pitches in to make those kids their priority, my family would do the very same thing.

Ahhh . . . . . Renegade, Renaissance, Rosebud, Reliance and now RelaxationKiller!

rich   January 9th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

I dont see a problem here. The kids need a continuity of care with their Grandma. The Obama's will be busy enough with their dutues, and needs to know that when they go about doing their jobs for the country that Grandma will be a trusting hand away. She can always go back and forth to Chicago when she is not needed. And by the way, not all mother in laws are bad people. Many of them make a world of a difference in their children's lives. I can't imagine what I would do without my mother wife or not.

scdemocrat   January 9th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

Man some of you people really need to get your doctor to adjust your meds. This is a story of a MOTHER ,and GRANDMOTHER, who loves her FAMILY ,and who is going to uproot and move to Washington DC to help her FAMILY. Yet some of you ignorant people insist on trying to denegrate PE Obama. It is going to be a long 4-hopefully 8 years for you people. May God grant you all some love in your hearts.

Robert   January 9th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Great! Somone else getting free rent using my tax dollars!

Lisa   January 9th, 2009 5:53 pm ET

They have a wonderful relationship I don't see any problems. Barack, Michelle and her mother all appears to love one another to a level some don't understand. God bless them all they need each other and not the haters. Barack like he said he want to say rooted and grounded in what is normal.

CAMI   January 9th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

Come on people – like the article says, it's not the first time a mother-in-law has lived in the White House, so what's the problem?

I think it's great that the girls will have their grandmother there with them, and from everything I've read, PE Obama actually gets along well with her and likes her. She'll be a great help when he and Michelle have to attend to business, travel, etc. Good for them!

Sherri   January 9th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

It is terrific. I grew up with my grandparents in our home and they were incredible influences on my life. This is a wonderful example of family love for all of us to honor.

jason, tx   January 9th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

Good for her. The granddaughters will benefit from her being there.

miss tachae   January 9th, 2009 5:32 pm ET

Grandparents can be awesome to have around, and help raise the kids or influence morals and generally love the grandkids...
BUT...

I think alot of people will be a little miffed that she "quit her job to come live in the big ole' white house" on taxpayers money, with servants and such.

Im just saying it looks a little iffy.

Ruff !!Ruff !!!   January 9th, 2009 5:30 pm ET

**The Obama decided to get 2 DOGS Brooklyn and Ernie**

Just a little hint to those who think the "mother-in-law in your face" is a bad idea. I personally think that Obama will be SO BUSY he might not see her as often as he did in Chicago when they had seaparate digs.

The liberals get anger when we call them on their hypocrisy.

Mari   January 9th, 2009 5:15 pm ET

Its hard to believe that the Republican-far-right-nuts are Christian! Your comments are disgusting. To insult a lady who is mother and grandmother is shameful!

However whenever Cindy McCain or Palin were criticized you people were the first ones to cry foul!

Having Michelle's mother living in the White House will be great for Michelle & Barack and their daughters. The presidency demands a lot from the First Couple and having Grandma live there will help!

GOD BLESS THE OBAMAS! AND PROTECT THEM FROM HATERS!

Jesse V Williams Jr   January 9th, 2009 5:12 pm ET

I didn't know that it was the taxpayers responsibility to support the in-laws. I guess that we just add a little more to the deficcit.

Ernie in LA – you sound like a hateful person.

John G   January 9th, 2009 5:08 pm ET

So now we're paying for the first extended family to live on our tax dollars?

Why do they need the mother in law?

They have cooks, housekeepers, chauffeurs, secret service and a father with the biggest Messiah complex since Christ himself...the kids will be fine and my tax dollars can be spent better on things that actually matter.

Lori   January 9th, 2009 5:07 pm ET

Woman in California, if you read a bit more carefully, you'll note grandma is trying this out for a few months. It could be that after that trial period she might decide what you suggest. You'll note she didn't choose to move into their Hyde Park home. She said originally that she didn't relish living in the White House...maybe she will, maybe she won't. It's my opinion that is a "family matter."

Kay   January 9th, 2009 5:06 pm ET

We now know which is the party of family values. I applaude the Obama's for having Mrs. Robinson live with them and help raise their 2 daughters. These young girls need stability in their lives. They have been moved from their Chicago home into the White House. Granny can help them make the adjustment and be there when the President and First Lady may be away on business. Better to have someone with your values there to take care of the kids than some stranger/nanny. This will not only help the girls, but it will allow the President to concentrate on State affairs and lead this country. Again, cudos to Barack and Michelle Obama and Mrs. Robinson for being such a caring, loving family and example to the rest of this country.

linda   January 9th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

I agree- we should not have to support the entire family- send grama to a condo and let her live nearby

Lauralherold@stny.rr.com   January 9th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

You go MRS ROBINSON and have a great time! The house is certainly big enough and I think at least for the first year try it out. She should be waited on hand and foot. Although I know that generation and they never allow it! MRS R you look like a divine individual. God Bless!

owen   January 9th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

No, no no – this is all wrong! Have your momma live elsewhere. We the working tax payers are paying to house this granny. Obama has the funds to put her up in a fine retirement facility or wait a minute, we the tax payers would probably foot the bill on that one too, what a shame.!!

Ernie in LA-Obama can have anyone of his choosing to live in theWH.Let go and try god

Karen   January 9th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

As a grandma living close by her many grandchildren, I'm sure it will be very handy to the new first family. Dad and Mom will surely have many social engagements and trips around the country. Who better to stay with the children? I think it's great and I'd love to be in her shoes.

House4rent   January 9th, 2009 4:47 pm ET

My own grandmother died when I was 18. After thirty years I still miss her like it was yesterday. I'd welcome her into my home in a heartbeat would God give me the opportunity. The Obama daughters are the luckiest girls alive to have their grandmother with them in the fishbowl.

Angel   January 9th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Grandma in the house,

She will get paid like the ones before her and I am sure you would not have a problem had Mr. Obama looked like the rest of the other presidents.. Obama understands how important it is for girls to have her there. I think you are one of ones who are insisting that Obama sends his kids to public school but its okay for white America to send their children to the best schools. You are a sick sun of a *btch.

www.kazurisana.com   January 9th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

A grandmother's influence and care is one of the best gifts parents can give to their children. A lot of problems we see in young people today is because we have separated them from their grandparents and do not involve them (grandparents) in raising up our children.

The PE and First Lady-to-be are right on target in involving their children's grandmother in their raising.

MAD   January 9th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

I think this is a really good idea. I believe the children, Michelle and yes even the PE will need Mrs. Robinson in the coming months. Remember Barack just lost his grandmother whom I'm sure he consulted about everyday life issues. At least they will all have an elder close by. This matters more than we probably know...

A Woman In California For Obama   January 9th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

While I know she is definitely needed to care for the young children, personally, I think she should buy a condo around the area and let them live a private life. Just my opinion.

Gloria - Minnesota   January 9th, 2009 4:03 pm ET

I think its great that the girls will continue to have stability in their lives. Michelle is going to be very busy with her First Lady duties, though one can tell she always puts her daughters first. It will help to have their Grandma there since both President and Mrs. Obama will have to travel in their new roles.

I'm very pleased and so happy we will have the Obamas as our First Family!!

He could also invite his an illegal immigrant aunt to stay with him. No problem, taxpayers already paying for it.

Look at the love and pride on both of their faces. Mrs Robinson obviously fills a void in PE Obama's heart with his mother dying so young and not being able to be there to witness his success.

What a wonderful gesture for this grandmother to leave her home in Chicago and everything and everyone she knows to support her granddaughters. There is little more precious than the love of a grandmother.

Maria   January 9th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

What happened to Michelle's promise to put all her focus on her daughters?

I guess it was more of the Obama lies.....since she seems to be pawning them off to the grandmother.

Jim   January 9th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Will his aunt, the illegal alien, also be moving in?

Amber   January 9th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

Oh my, the First Mother-in-Law!!
Bon chance, Obama.

Grace from MN   January 9th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Want to make a big deal out of Mom-in-law moving in too? Grand mother is the only other familiar face that would be around. They need her to help look after the girls, while mom and dad are working. OK?
