Beyonce will be among the stars to appear at the inaugural kickoff event.
Beyonce will be among the stars to appear at the inaugural kickoff event.

(CNN) — The opening celebration of the presidential inauguration will feature a massive line-up of musical all-stars performing a free show in the shadow of the Lincoln Memorial, the Presidential Inaugural Committee said Monday.

The event will feature performances by: "Beyonce, Mary J. Blige, Bono, Garth Brooks, Sheryl Crow, Renee Fleming, Josh Groban, Herbie Hancock, Heather Headley, John Legend, Jennifer Nettles, John Mellencamp, Usher Raymond IV, Shakira, Bruce Springsteen, James Taylor, will.i.am, and Stevie Wonder," said the committee. "Among those reading historical passages will be Jamie Foxx, Martin Luther King III, Queen Latifah and Denzel Washington."

The release confirmed that Rev. Gene Robinson, an openly gay Episcopal bishop, will deliver the invocation, and that additional performances may be added.

The event will be televised by HBO on an open signal accessible to all U.S. viewers with access to cable, telcos or satellite television.

Did you all forget about Mr. Obama's speech in 2004. Why United ……….State of America???? Ever thought of the word "united"
It's about time we wake up to the changes that are taking place in America…….Changes that we can believe in. Beyonce or Stevie, liberal or conservatives, Bishop Robinson or Pr. Warren…… Can we all be united for the country's sake??????

Morris   January 12th, 2009 10:03 pm ET

With all the other BIG names on the list to preform why is it so many people hating on Beyonce? There has been a lot of overrated performers Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, John Wayne just to name a few…

Caroline Kennedy for NYS Senate   January 12th, 2009 9:54 pm ET

Did anyone notice the word "free" in the article? Also I remember immediately after the election, many of these artists volunteered their services for inauguration before anything was even asked (Beyonce actually even canceled some international tour or something of that nature). What is the outcry about the expense all about? The stage set-up which would have been done anyway concert or not? The artists who are performing most likely pro-bono? I don't get it. Can't we just kick back and enjoy one day without all the partisan bickering, which by the way will not change the outcome.

Sue   January 12th, 2009 9:52 pm ET

I'd really like to know why empathy for those less fortunate is now "liberal." Why despising war is "liberal." Why voting for a Christian is "liberal." Why expecting the President to abide by the Constitution, no matter what, is "liberal." Aren't those all conservative values? Is this country really turned upside down?

Lori   January 12th, 2009 9:51 pm ET

I can't wait to watch our next President being sworn in. I am so excited that all these talented people are just as joyous as the rest of us Americans for our next President!!!

Hurry up January 20th!

WELL YOU HAVE TO LOOK AT IT SHE JUST ABOUT BEGGED TO SING SO I GUESS LOOK WHAT BEGGIN WILL DO WITH HER SORRY SELF

Tracy   January 12th, 2009 9:39 pm ET

All the Single Ladies! Hip hip hurray it just doesn't get any better than Beyonce!

This is a great line up artists. Nice entertainment for the internet generation!

kim   January 12th, 2009 9:21 pm ET

Why would they let someone like beyonce who is a terrible influence to young women with all that booty shaking leg gaping antics pwerform at this event, she is so so very over rated. I would hope for a great talent like Alicia Keyes or Jennife Hudson true genuine talented singers. I heard the obama girls like beyonce, they should not be allowed to listen to her music or watch her videos to trashy.

Sharon Jacobs   January 12th, 2009 9:17 pm ET

I really don't get it…we are all suppose to be AMERICANS and most of the comments posted here and elsewhere are made by people who want America to fail. Barack Hussien Obama (I hope I spelled his name right) is our 44th president. If he fails, we all fail. And to the people who have a problem/negative opinion about the selected entertainment…America is not white, for white people, about white people…we are all Americans and it is about time the going ons in America reflect the diversity. We are all AMERICANS, if you don't want watch/participate in the celebration of our newly elected president, that is your business, but please don't rain on our parade with you nastiness.

IndyVoter   January 12th, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Hey, why all the Beyonce' hate. Give her a break. As a vocalist trained to evaluate musical talent, I can say that she actually is very talented if not predictable. You may not like her style, but she can sing circles around the average person. She has been singing, arranging and producing music since she was a child. She worked hard and paid her dues and now they are coming to fruition…giver her a break. This is America isn't it? Or is the American dream only for certain folk?

Erin   January 12th, 2009 9:08 pm ET

Who wouldn't want to be a part of history, sure the line up is Okay, some should be there and some shouldn't. Lets not lose focus on OUR REAL ISSUES!!!

Jazzy4life   January 12th, 2009 9:05 pm ET

You need to get real deal with it. The best man won. You need to remember the crap that bush put us threw. This isn't Black or White America. It's America. So if you want to complain do. It's funny how so many positive voices were heard over your ignorant one. So regardless Wake Up!!!!!!!!!!!!! Brand New Day

Lisa   January 12th, 2009 8:27 pm ET

Okay, seriously, you guys…..the lineup is amazing. It's diverse, INCLUSIVE, and has a little bit of something for everyone, no matter where your musical, political, or religious interests lie. And for the record, the rumor about Beyonce being jealous was – a RUMOR! You grown people need to stop hating on Beyonce.

Ula Nejad Sacramento, Ca   January 12th, 2009 8:23 pm ET

It was never about America. It really is all about the razzle and dazzle of the Obamas shoving it down the white man's throat. When it comes down to it someone will become the sacrificial lamb. LOL.

Jerry R Lucas   January 12th, 2009 8:11 pm ET

The only question I have is how will all this cost? I know that this is the first time in our history but, really do we need to run up more bills right now. I did not vote for Mr. Obama but, I going to give him the chance to lead.

I just do not understand the over the top use of money for this party. I would love to use it to feed those that will still need food a week later. Again lets think about the future not just today.

To all the sore losers complaining about the cost of president OBAMA's inauguration, I am contributing in the form of donation and so many other citizens. Because of this, the inauguration will probably cost less the the taxpayers. Get it?

Well, I think I will contribute more money now because I want this moment to MEMORABLE as the MAN!

President OBAMA, you have my full support financial and emotional.

I'll be clicking off right after I watch a real man and a real lady get aboard the jet on there way home. You'll be missed President Bush. I'm going to skip the gong show after you depart.

Chip of Louisville Kentucky   January 12th, 2009 7:26 pm ET

I think everyone who is being negative needs to shut the hell up. This is without doubt a cause for celebration. This ceremony is not only a symbol of where we are going but also about where we have been and what we have overcome. Yes, let there be no doubt that this is a time to celebrate. Whether you voted for Barak Obama or not, whether you be black, white, short, tall, fat, skinny, democrat, republican, young old, whatever and whoever, with his election WE have ALL overcome adversity in this. If a black man can be elected President of the United States of America, then ALL of us can do ANYTHING we are willing to work for.

I hope and pray that with a president with the intellect, temperament, and broadminded world view of Barack Obama, more of us will realize how an adult behaves. It has been a very long time since we had an adult in the White House. Among the truths he has already demonstrated are: Adults do not treat people with whom they disagree as if they were a lower form of being. Adults realize that each of us has an indivdual perspective, and that one can sometimes learn something from someone with a different point of view. Adults realize that they will not always have their way. Adults treat all people with civility. Adults realize that the world does not revolve around them. Adults realize that we are all part of one large community on this very small planet. May God bless President Obama and all the citizens of this world.

I'm not neo. Paleo. No difference, though, right? We’re all Nazis in your book.

As for neo-cons — Fox News absolutely worships celebrities, despite their occasional fake moralizing about evil Hollywood liberals.

Mellencamp is trash. His "song" plugging the Jena 6 fraud was delusional, know-nothing, white guilt politics at its worst. Sorry to see Renee Fleming there, however.

SoVeryFunnyofYoutoMention   January 12th, 2009 5:55 pm ET

@ President Barack Obama's comment:

You may want to ease up on your hate–your going to have at least 4 and probably 8 years of this to deal with. His name won't change– and he'll still "be your president." Stop etching away at the longevity of your life with so much hate. At least quit looking for every online article about him to vent on…this one was about entertainment and not much else. Don't like his policies? Find a POLITICLE article to comment on. Don't like that he's Black and running the country? Join the klan and vent with them, you'll be in better company. That goes for the rest of you with similar views. Losers.

Denise Bolin   January 12th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Mike in NYC – You must be one of those neo-con hypocrites, judging everyone as a group. Even the bible tells you not to judge, lest you be judged.

There's only one thing that bothers me more than hypocrites – neo-con hypocrites.

Denise Bolin   January 12th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Hey Tim – You are wrong. As Colin Powell said "Obama has style AND substance". He's the real deal and if you stop being hateful long enough to pay attention to the great job he's doing EVEN BEFORE HE'S INAGURATED, maybe you'd see that.

Honor our President – negativity and hate accomplish nothing.

Denise Bolin   January 12th, 2009 5:47 pm ET

Why doesn't it make sense to you that we can't have two Presidents spouting their intentions about the Middle East at the same time?

Can you imagine the backlash from around the world?

I admire President Elect Obama for his grace and his wisdom to recognize his place right now.

Some of you just criticize everything you can – you must have sad lives to be so negative and hateful.

Charm   January 12th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

DPW, Charenton La.   January 12th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

Why all the hate!!! This is a historical event for all races. I get a feeling that all of the negative comments are coming from McCain-Palin supporters. It is ok guys, because guess what he is still your President and you should treat him as such. How WONDERFUL……Please keep in mind who your President is…. :) Yeah!!!!!!

Rhea   January 12th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

TCM, what a stupid remark.

Jes   January 12th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

People seem to like to bash celebrities, yet the only reason that they're as famous as they are is because YOU the people made it that way.

Honestly, they work hard and tirelessly, they make the amount of money that they make because people like you, go see their movies and watch their televisions shows and buy your kids video games voiced by them, or that Hanna Montana guitar that your daughter got for Christmas.

So if you want to bash someone who works more than 40 hours a week, has talent, charisma and experience in their field. Many who actively give to charity or volunteer. It's time to look yourself in the mirror and ask what you're doing for society and it's values and morals.

ReyMac   January 12th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

Larry   January 12th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

I find this hard to digest- Everyone is talking about how “We have to make financial changes, tighten our belts, watch what we’re doing”, yet when it comes to the Inauguration of Barak Obama, the inauguration is turning into a “Money Circus and Media Circus”.

Can you imagine, all our Politicians, are telling us of how tough things are and how bad they are probably going to get, yet the same people who cry “Wolf” are willing to spend Large undisclosed amounts of money on a stupid inauguration winding, that’s going to probably 100 fold (times) cap the cost of a New Years in New York, London and a few other places combined.

Don’t you think it would benefit all of us here in the United States to have a “Humble Inauguration” rather than a Hugh Hefner type wild fling?

“Do as I tell you, Not as I do”, what a shameful waste of taxpayer money!

I am extremely excited that someone like Obama is finally going to enter the White House. By the grace and power of God, a dream-a fairytale, some would say- is now a reality. Obama is my own son and I would be very hurt and sad to see him fumble. He cannot afford to fail, lest he diasappoints the billions over the world who have given him the benefit of the doubt and reposed their confidence in him, not least, the Almighty God. That is why I would like him to start on a clean note and not entertain people whose character is obviously doubtful, even before having been subjected to any thorough scrutiny. Why would Obama be happy to allow a whole Bible-wielding priest, who describes himself as homosexual deliver his invocation? What kind of moral message is he trying to convey to the billions who will tune in to watch his innauguration? Doesn't Obama recognise that homosexualism is unnatural and extremely filthy and unhealthy practice? Mr. President-elect, I love every human being, including gay people, but they are wayward, as we all know. They are not a good example in our society today. Please, do not give them the platform to legitimise their unwholesome behaviour. Please, please, do not allow them to use you. I won't say much, but I hope you understand me. A word to the wise is enough. Thread cautiously, my son.

OK Fish…I'll bite. What treasonous act did Springsteen commit?
Did he spy on fellow citizens without a warrant? Did he reveal the identity of a CIA agent?
And don't you have to be an immigrant to be deported? Wasn't he born in Jersey?

I have no idea why conservatives have the reputation of being grossly out of touch with reality…

Wow,,, People!! The machine is working,, they have you all distracted and consumed with what matters least. Funny things is you are eating up like hot cakes with maple syrup on a snowy morning. What is really alarming is 30-40% of those who have commented, have also REPRODUCED = very scary for our future.. Yes, I agree this country needs change, Yes, I am optimistic that the President-Elect can deliver, and I WILLl remain a PROUD American. With all the Rok Start hoopla, I hope that they can squeeze in an honorable mention for the Men and Women of the armed forces that are making it possible for you and I to sit at our desks and have an opinion about all of this.

Vanessa   January 12th, 2009 4:33 pm ET

Fish … Springsteen is guilty of treason? How do you figure? … wait, don't tell me … you've got a source that says he was the mastermind and disclosed the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame while America was at war! Yeah, that's the ticket!

Seriously, get a life, dude ….

BILL CLINTON   January 12th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

Jackie in Dallas   January 12th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Jeez, guys, this is just the lineup for FREE entertainment for people attending the Inauguration. You don't have to like Beyonce, and I don't have to like Garth Brooks, but it says a lot that this rather eclectic and varied lineup agreed to perform for free. I mean, how often do you see will.i.am, Josh Grolin, and Garth mentioned in the same sentence???

Yes, there is a lot of crap going on in the world, serious stuff, but that doesn't mean that every story HAS to be gloom and doom. Why not let the few hundred thousand people who will be there in person and the millions who will be watching have a nice time for a few hours. I know I'll be watching, even if I have to watch it on my computer at work.

simp   January 12th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

@ tired of corporate politics

Nobody said this was MORE important than GAZA, however this is VERY important to the USA. You negative loser get on my nerve. Obama deserves a celebrated inauguration just like all the other presidents so stop your useless whinning.

Springsteen is guilty of treason and should be deported.

irving fleischman   January 12th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

your reporting of the middle east war is dispicable. no bias no bull translates into total bull. showing a small hamas child crying is a resut of hamas using innocent civilians to get the worlds sympathy is an outrage. show all the missles hamas sends into israel. thank god they do not know what they are doing, even with the aid of iran. but they may get lucky and your cameras will not show innocent civilians hurt. why don't you ask the obvious question. why doesn't hamas stop firing missles. you won't ask because hamas is out to destroy israel. i sometimes wonder if i am watching cnn or the united nations. both of you do not care about israel but the poor palistiants looking to eliminate israel from the map.

So What   January 12th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

All liberals.

IndyVoter   January 12th, 2009 4:19 pm ET

With all of the artists and different genres of music that the article said will be represented at the Inauguration celebration, if you can't find any enjoyment or anything positive to say about it, then you just must WANT to be miserable and critical. Sheesh! Music is good for the soul (especially good music). Killjoys Be Gone!

Politically Conscious   January 12th, 2009 4:18 pm ET

This is an excellent opportunity to galvanize what is a multifaceted society. While conservatives tend to be over the edge with most matters, there is some prudence in taking some of their beliefs and values as our own. We are a hybrid nation…or at least getting there. Division only stifles the inevitable and while we may disagree, albeit, vehemently at times, there is a sense of order here that defeats the 'old school' divisiveness that was common in the past and continues to linger in obscure forms. What does this have to do with the entertainment line-up piece here? Everything and nothing…the point is and will always be in these types of articles is that Obama has finally lit a candle in most people. Those that resist silently want to join in rejoicing but can't bring themselves out of the 'republican' hole.

vet   January 12th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

Sing it Beyonce. Let Obama know it, "I don't think yo' ready for this jelly!"

pakuna   January 12th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

What America needs is productivity. We need jobs that come as a result of free enterprise, free markets and capitalism, not free money and sure as h@@@ not a bunch of obamas pets performing for him.

mrs pantene   January 12th, 2009 4:12 pm ET

Where were all YOU critics for the last eight years? conservative or Liberals we are all AMERICAN. You just don't get it cause you are too full of hate, predjudice and used to the ole boy network.
Keep spitting your hate and anger, we'll see who will be re-elected and who won't

Matt   January 12th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Wow if you don't like Beyonce and think she is over rated and way over hyped. She is mind you, not saying she does not have talent just way overhyped like a lot things today, president elects included. And just because she will be at the inaugeration the Obama Internet Thug patrol brow beats you with their opinion. Fred, Tim you are entitled to your opinions even if others are telling you to just goose step along.

Mike in NYC   January 12th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

America 2009. Not exactly what I had in mind as a kid when I imagined what the future would be like.

Most "celebrities" rank among the lowest of the low in my book. Contributing nothing to society, with views and morals to match.

dallas female   January 12th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Chrissyone- I'm with you on badbrains… i secretly think they will be there. just not performing.

i however used 5 hours of PAID personal time to watch all the festivities.

yeah, that's right.

A Woman In California For Obama   January 12th, 2009 4:08 pm ET

Patrick, St. Louis   January 12th, 2009 4:01 pm ET

From a strictly comic perspective, its too bad that BHO seems to have more integrity than many of his Senate colleagues and presidential predecessors… otherwise, we could be making jokes like, "yeah, Beyonce will be performing a free show in a shadow of the Lincoln Bedroom, too."

RealityKing   January 12th, 2009 4:00 pm ET

Meanwhile Obama and his 111th band of merry spending liberals sell out America's grandchildren…

So let me get this straight: you think the past 8 years were full of substance? I might agree with you if you let me pick which susbtance we say it was. I'll give you hint: monkeys throw it when they're angry.

IndyVoter   January 12th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

With all of the different artists and genres of music that they listed will be participating in the Inauguration kickoff, if you can't find something to appreciate and/or celebrate, then you are just bitter and must WANT to be critical. Sheesh! Just have fun, enjoy the music, Heaven knows we have enough negativity already in the world that we could focus on.

Well, at least Elton John and Paul McCartney aren't being asked–unless the innaugural committee has a lapse and accidentally invites them. I'm a little mad that Bono (aka, I really want to be president of the world and/or an American politician but I can't because I'm not American) has been invited to this. Let's keep the foreign acts to a minimum, or non-existent.

The only important thing to me in this is that we will soon be able to address him as "President Obama".

person   January 12th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

im actually going to be there! :)

Greg Pottstown, Pa.   January 12th, 2009 3:53 pm ET

I love stars that go and support Obama but don't show any support for our troops. Hello ever herd of giving back it is called the USO. Remember bob hope? Both of them have no time for the troops but for Obama no problem. Obama should be directing them to the USO as should any other president taking office during time of war. I think it is rediculas that Obama is spending all this money on himself and not spending it on our troops who deserve it well more that any president. Yes I do say this no mater who is taking office.

Re: tired of corporate politics

It amazes me that people can continue to be ignorant to the fact that we finally have a president who is putting America first, and continue to find irrelevant things to talk about–whether than bond together and help solve the problems we have in America.
I understand Gaza/Israel/Hamas–let them sort their stuff out for a change…if we try to go into this battle…we all know how it is going to never end.

By the way, Obama will not be the first black President. He'll be the first bi-racial President. Facts don't lie folks.

jp,michigan   January 12th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

I , as an American citizen, am discussed with the cost of the election ($688 million to become President) and discussed with the cost of the Inauguration of the President. When you read the newspapers and hear the reports on the television about the millions of people out of work, loosing their homes and unable to care for their families, I consider these actions wasteful spending for a dog and pony show.

There will be mayhem going on in the world every minute of every day each and every day of the year and for as long as the world exists. January 20th is a day for this country to celebrate and it's about time! Stop hatin' because it isn't going to change anything. You three, and your kind are miserable while the rest of the good ole USA recognizes how much this country has grown and the strides we have made.

Stop being stuck on stupid and get on board. You guys are boring and your attitudes are tired and played out. If you can't stop yourselves from being stuck on stupid, just shut up then. Just shut up.

It's time to end the republican racism in America.

Some GOOD picks, some SCARY ones as well.

Three main campaign points, taxing the rich, closing gitmo and ending the Iraq war YESTERDAY,and all three he is going back on, but he is so coooooooooooooool…….

Can we get any objectivity or is it going to be a "fawning festival" for four more years?

I don't know but I think Beyonce is loosing it!! An alter ego?? The last time I remember I had an alter ego was when I thought I was my boy MJ for the Bulls. That's what happens when your mind gets exposed like that…is not good and sometimes, is bad.

EW   January 12th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

This inauguration turns into a bigger farce every day. Why is there a need to turn a once grand and respected ceremony into a Hollywood sideshow?

I guess Fred G can't read. He obviously did not see the long list of performers joining Beyonce. A very mixed group I might add…

Regarding Rev. Gene Robinson—Obama had to satisfy both "sides" and keep everybody happy. Hey, Barack, you better not keep trying to doing that, or you will have everyone ticked off. And talking out of both sides of your mouth at the same time is very difficult. Grow up and decide where you want to lay your hat!
