To concerned Democrat - I can't imagine why you would be concerned if it were John Kerry picked. The fact is that both Clinton and Obama had vvariations of Kerry/Feingold - which they voted against as their Iraq position - with HRC actually using nearly word for word Kerry's justifications given a year earlier.

They both echoed Kerry's view of how to fight non-state terrorism. On broader issues - even here you see echoes of stronger at home, stronger abroad - a major Kerry 2004 slogan.

Kerry has 24 years of real foreign policy experience and he has been a successful diplomat, when he was allowed to be. Kerry also has had a clear foreign policy point of view - expressed as early as in a 1966 Yale speech which Madeline Albright quoted in one of her books. Kerry, unlike Clinton, fought the Reagan foreign policy of arming the Contras.

More than HRC or Biden, Kerry as SoS would have been real change. As Chair of SFRC he will still have a voice on foreign policy and independence. If Obama really agrees with him on foreign policy - and he used Kerry as his key foreign policy surrogate - Kerry will just as influential as Senator as he would be as SoS.

What exactly is diplomacy? Years of sanctioning before we act towards an openly defiant dictator. " Mr. If you don't let inspectors in we're going to slap your hand and then we'll give you 3 months and if you continue to be defiant, well then we're going to give you another 3 months and then Buster if you do not comply your in trouble because we're going to give you only 2 months and then we're going to complain some more to the U.N. and oh boy then you're in TROUBLE!" Sounds "Smart"

To Voter's comment...

Get over it. Barack Obama won the election and he has made great choices for his cabinet including the selection of Hillary Clinton.
I will say the same thing about Kerry and Richardson to Concerned Democrat that others say about John McCain and that is that they deserve respect also. I am anxious to see the results of all of them working together along with the republicans also.

I think it will be fine. She's enormously popular, they're not going to give her a hard time without major blowback- note how the Republicans treated her in the primary. As far as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, I sincerely hope that their basic humanity will come forth and recognize that there's no such thing as a war in which at least one party lived in extreme poverty.

Hillary Clinton will do what Condi Rice never could -- she will make sense of what we are doing because it's going to finally actually be logical and not impulse driven. Rice is an academic and should be back at her university. This is not her bailiwick. It is Clinton's. Hillary Clinton, who is my Senator, has always impressed me as wonky but also strong. She will have a strong President behind her, too.

Usually United States has strong economic power in companion with military power to achieve deplomatic solutions. Not anymore.. The role of Secretary of State is going to be harder. But I think she will be doing great with the help of Bill that he still has many friends around the world.

The most transparent thing about Hilary Clinton is that she will 'talk tough'; but will surrender in a heart beat, when confronted by man-power. lol

We'll see how she and Obama handle the Palestinian crisis, since it will be a first test of their promise to renew America's standing in the world.

Being so pro-Israel, I hope they will promise a more balanced foreign policy that addresses the Palestinians' grievances as well as Israel's security concerns.

She is the best person available for Secretary of State, so she is going to do just great!

I would have been worried if it had been John Kerry......thank goodness President Elect Obama had the wisdom to skip Kerry and Richardson.

According to Will Rodgers - diplomacy is the art of saying "nice doggy" while you are looking for a rock.

And I agree. Point to ONE issue that was ever resolved thru diplomacy. That's right you can't, you might delay the inevitable, but that's it....Just ask Neville Chamberlain.

all this sounds good too bad we have learned we cannot believe anything the liar hillary says!!

Ahh well soon she will get appointed and then, when her gross incompetence becomes too much even for Obama to work around, she will get fired and we will hire Richardson to do the job he should be doing (by then the fraudulent cases brought against him will be resolved and we will be able to appoint him!)
