Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich has some advice to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Former Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich has some advice to California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – While President-elect Barack Obama talks about reforming the federal government by bringing change to Washington, California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is looking to the nation’s capital for advice on how to shake up Sacramento.

More specifically, the governor’s senior aides recently turned to former House Speaker Newt Gingrich for input on how to enact political reforms and make the government run more efficiently, Schwarzenegger communications director Matt David tells CNN.

David said the discussion between Gingrich and Schwarzenegger chief of staff Susan Kennedy did not focus on the current deadlock over the California state budget, but rather the governor’s goal of creating a more efficient state government that could include “consolidating some agencies and getting rid of overtime and sick time abuse.”

“Since his first day in office, the governor has been looking at ways to reform the political system in Sacramento, to make it more accountable and to also make government more efficient to save taxpayer dollars,” he said.

David, who got to know Gingrich during his work at the conservative group Freedoms Watch, reached out to the former House speaker to ask for suggestions and ideas on the issue of reform.

With the Republican Party searching for a unifying theme, could political reform and smaller government be the GOP rallying cry in 2010? Lacking a natural national leader right now, will Schwarzenegger and/or Gingrich fill that role?

Schwartz is holding the state of California hostage because he can't work with the legislature. They won't agree to everything he wants in the budget and he is taking his ball and going home. The ones who suffer are the state employees that are getting paycuts and the taxpayers who will be getting IOU's instead of refunds because this east European totalitarian suffers from the same inability to respect democracy and compromise as the rest of his dying party.

As a native Californian I would hope our Gov would ask the advice of persons that bring government together rather then divide the State . And knowing that Mr. Gingrich is one of the highest paid lobbyist on K street . I would like to see how much the Californian taxpayers are paying the GREAT DIVIDER for his services.?

PLEASE remember NEWT GINGRICH's contract with America,
More like a PAWN TICKET on our FUTURE !

For starters, PLEASE don't give out I.O.U's. And secondly, that state is just bad, I mean, bad! No matter what, you gotta cut taxes, you have to no matter what. And I just don't understand how taxes were raised over there, I'm just shocked with these numbers! There's just so many questions that quite frankly, is gonna take decades to figure out but for starters, conserve and analyze your money. Don't just say your gonna do this and later on, do something else, in that state, any little refund or value back is not worth taking but in fact, has to. I wonder how the domino effect is and I'm sure is pretty bad...

Adrian   January 12th, 2009 9:43 pm ET

What's wrong Arnold? Maybe you should go to the Gym now and see if you can put some meat on your "bones" Economy.
I hope you're not looking to Obama for help.
What;s the matter can't you run the state of California?

Tbone85   January 12th, 2009 9:42 pm ET

I really don't mean to be disrespectful here, but by what standard has Gingrich proved to know anything about efficiency in government? Many of the tenants of the Contract with America (like term limits) were abandoned as soon as it became politically expedient. Government grew and I know of no credible evidence that Gingrich had anything to do with making government better. I hope CA didn't pay this guy as a consultant.

Arnold = Fail   January 12th, 2009 9:04 pm ET

Arnold is an idiot and a hypocrite. He claims to have joined the Republican party because he thought that the Democratic policies were 'socialist', yet ironically, nearly all of Arnold's fiscal policies = socialism.

Can anyone say the furloughs? Cutting state worker's pays by 10%? Cutting education? Hmm... sounds like some socialist trickle-down economics. I understand California is in the midst of a huge fiscal crisis, but Arnie is only aggravating it. Democrats, Republicans, labor unions all hate Arnold Schwarzeneggar (or however the heck you spell his name).

Arnold is not cleaning up California. He is merely making it the People's Republic of California.

Arnold is neither a liberal or a conservative. He is simply an idiot.

If you want to straighten out government then put in term limits on the inner Washington circle. Get rid of all the old timers in Washington and the ineffective ones and let the womanizers go that takes in quite of few members of congress. Then get rid of the ones who know everything and will not listen to the people who put them into office.

Ivan Sanchez   January 12th, 2009 7:33 pm ET

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has serious budget problems with a state that is going broke because of illegal immigrants sponging off the economy these people are in the millions! With the Mexican economy growing perhaps he needs to ask the Mexican government for a bail out as if that’s ever going to happen!
I believe it would be best for Arnold to sell California to Mexico, thou the majority of the state is already in Mexican hands!
The rest of the country is in trouble because of poor boarder control! No telling how many terrorists there are here already.
On the other hand it would be best not to ask for a bail out, this way the state will be broke and all illegal aliens would have to retreat back to Mexico and California could start fresh but this time raise walls between Mexico and the United State and deploying the Military and anyone caught would be arrested and imprison for 20 years, that would solved the problem.
America has enough lawbreakers without 11 million more from another country.

Once you vote Black   January 12th, 2009 7:31 pm ET

You could not put the two of their heads together and get mush. The GOP is so bankrupt of ideas that they are hustling backwards. If Newt knew what he was talking about he would not have been on the outs. GOP do yourself a favor; do some researh and find out why you were asked to walk. The answer can only be found outside of your cone of ideas.

California-not-so-dreaming   January 12th, 2009 7:31 pm ET

In all seriousness, CA is in bad shape and it's mostly due to mismanagement by a largely democratic government. CA democrats need a reality check once and for all. It is unrealistic, not to mention unsustainable, to dump money into every problem that the state faces. That has been the approach used for decades by democrats here in the once Golden State. Every solution is either in increase in taxes or a creation of a new program.

As an independent, I feel we need to get pragmatic politician in Sacramento ASAP

Very Proud American   January 12th, 2009 7:25 pm ET

Does the GOP not get it.....they have tried the smaller goverment rhetoric and it didn't work. Please don't have Arnold for 2012 please no......I can't even understand him. The GOP needs to have someone that speaks from the heart on issues of the American people. They can't half-heartedly speak on Unity and Prosperity .....without gaining the confidence of the American people. What they need is a true thoughtful intelligent leader like we have in President Elect Obama, it's the ONLY way. All Americans Democrats, Republicans & Independents are going to be very picky.

Wildness is NOT freedom!

Gary Chandler in Canada   January 12th, 2009 7:21 pm ET

Are traffic signals 'unpatriotic'?
Obama says the 'anything goes' attitude has to go.
Bush said he had to 'go against his 'free' market philosphy in calling for the bail out'
Government for the people leads to 'freedom'.
Letting executives slosh through the pic trough is wildness, not freedom.
If America would REALISE that FREEDOM and WILDNESS are antonyms, not similes, there would be a glimmer of hope!
8 year olds are not free to attend school without confronting a gun toting tot. I don't think your founding fathers meant the 'right to bear arms' was to have needless arsenals in private homes.
Would real freedom, the right to choose the right path, OR wildness result in a country having the #1 crime rate of developed countries?
HINT – it's the second choice!
If America wants a society that is free from harm, get a GRIP!

The Governor needs a new director who is more accountable for the budget process which has caused UC campuses across California to stop accepting applications for the brightest and best students. His armaggedon ploy is not working. Three constitutional officers have stated that he they will not follow this governor's furlough request. It will shut down government and will not serve the People of California. Susan Kennedy is dead wrong – it's not the State Workers nor the UC Campuses or teachers who are at fault. It's he and his GOP legislators who continue to embattle the State into debt!

IsaacFromCali   January 12th, 2009 6:47 pm ET

Even though I did not vote for the Governator... twice, I have to admit I am proud to have him as governor. Arnold Schwarzenegger has to be one of the best "real" republicans out there but thats not saying much since there is only about 5 "real" republicans out there.

Arnold does not need advice from any republican. He should be the one giving advice. He is a good role model on how you supposed to work together with repubs and democrats. He is truly a unitor.

Now go make Terminator 4!!

Karl Rove   January 12th, 2009 6:41 pm ET

The governor work furlough will cause the Sacramento region to lose over $1 billion dollars; overall, his strategy will cost a loss of $3 billion dollars to California. This GOP is a lameduck – he is not the leader California needs nor the GOP....

Randy - Denver   January 12th, 2009 6:34 pm ET

this cry for smaller government confuses me slightly. I understand the need to minimize budgets and reduce the intrusion on everyday life as much as possible. However, to say that social programs are not needed misses the big picture. Social strife starts when people feel unsafe in their homes and unwanted by their country. The poor in the US already feel disenfrancished, that their vote and their needs are ignored, that is one of the reasons Mr. Obama has such support from the poorer, minority, communities, they see him as a way for their voices to be heard. If people are not kept, as a minimum, fed, clothed and housed their unhappiness will lead to social and potentially civil strife. Al Queada and its ilk have shown this rather blatantly in the past several years and if we ignore the warning we will find ourselves in a similar spot as EWurope is finding themselves. In Holland, the Netherlands and even England the disenfrancised (in this case mostly Muslim) poor have really started to destroy the social fabric. We will find ourselves, sooner rather than later, in that same role if we do not really deal with our economic and social split in this country. The social programs (education, social security, health care, welfare, etc) need to be reinforced and additional programs, to try to break the cycle of welfare, need to be pursued. This will require larger government, the fact is as more people become Americans the social problems increase. We are not a country with thousands of years behind us, we are a new and evolving country that, while we have determined our broad outlines, have no historic reference or specific present details. We are larger than than any empire (in numbers) save the Chinese and late USSR than over occured in history and unlike all the other empires we have no set culture therefore we MUST ensure our social programs continue to ensure our culture does the same.

Or should it be Gingrich who could not even hold his own seat? Fact is the GOp needs to start taking a hard look at their tactics of using "hot Spot" issues to try to get in power, America has seen that they not only NEVER get their issues approved (bush – 6 years – a republican controlled rubber stamp senate why were are all those issues not taken care of then?) they also are incapable of running the government.

Smaller government? HAHAHAHAHA. I doubt it. The GOP has yet to learn that legislating moral choices dictated by religious tenets is actually a "big government" exercise of power. Soon as they learn that, they MIGHT start moving back to their roots. I'm betting, however, that they'll cling to those policy positions as a means of dividing up the one-issue voters and will take us for another spin around the mulberry bush in 2 years.

Joe Terrogano   January 12th, 2009 6:16 pm ET

Our latest actor gov. is all smoke and mirrors since he first proposed that he had the great business scene to fix our state's budget problems. Well the good Governor has been a dismal failure because of an old requirement to have a 2/3 % approval on any budget and Arnold can't get his GOP guys in line. Arnold was big on taking out loans to get a quick fix his first year but since then it's been total gridlock.

Instead of having the wealthiest people in the world pay their fair share of taxes the GOP would rather have kids forgo a decent education that is vital to the state's future and have kids go hungry to protect the millionaires and billionaires.

Is that the new GOP message?
