President Bush and first lady Laura Bush sat down with CNN's Larry King Live on Tuesday.

(CNN) - President Bush on Tuesday cautioned his successor, Barack Obama, "not to become an economic forecaster" after he takes office later this month.

In an interview with CNN's "Larry King Live," scheduled to air 9 p.m. Tuesday, King and Bush discussed Obama's predictions for a bad year ahead for the U.S. economy.

"He'll learn not to become an economic forecaster once he gets to be president," Bush said, agreeing that 2009 will likely be a hard year.

"That's not a good idea to say?" King asked the outgoing president.

Watch: Bush fights back at critics

"I don't think so. I think he can say it's going to be a tough period but to predict what the economy is going to do ... it is going to be bad, but how bad, how long?" Bush responded.

"What he ought to be saying, and I know he feels this way, is he's going to take the steps he thinks are necessary to get us back on the road to recovery and we will recover."

Bush said he liked Obama and was looking forward to his inauguration, where he will have a "front row seat" to an historic moment in the country's history.

But first lady Laura Bush said she took some of Obama's critiques of her husband personally.

"Were you angry at it?" King asked.

"Yes, sort of. George didn't really even know about it because he didn't really watch it that much," Laura Bush said, laughing.

"So what's new?" Bush piped in. "When you make big decisions and tough calls, you're going to get criticized."

Oh, you're angry, Laura? And what is your husband and his 20% approval rating going to do about it?

Vic in TX   January 14th, 2009 1:40 am ET

Laura needs to remember that Georgie and his two bit friends swift boated John Kerry. Jesus, if anybody should be upset of criticism, its Kerry's wife. All that crap was a bunch of lies about Kerry's Vietnam days and there was Georgie getting in the Guard because of his fathers clout in Texas. Then Georgie basically went AWALL from the Tx National Guard and has the gall to try to tear down a good record of Kerry's Vietnam. So Laura, Im sorry if little George got some criticism from Prez elect Obama. Go back to Dallas and Crawford TX and just realize that ur husband is probably one of the worst Prez's ever in history.

"Yes, sort of. George didn't really even know about it because he didn't really watch it that much," Laura Bush said, laughing.

Amazing – the Country he has led for the past 8 years and he has so little interest in its future that "he didn't really watch it that much"...

Kind of sums up the way he governed his Country... Way to go GWB!

Steve   January 14th, 2009 1:12 am ET

First let me say that I can not stand Mr. Bush due to what he has subjected us all to for the last eight years. However, I can't help feeling that to continue to bash on him demeans us (the American people) and diminishes the office. I don't feel sorry for him. I just do not see anything productive coming out from all this.

Carl from MI   January 14th, 2009 1:10 am ET

Dubya is an idiot. Period.

Laura's been married to him for HOW long and she still doesn't realize it yet? She must really deserve him then...

bob smith   January 14th, 2009 1:10 am ET

awwwww...bdee bdee bdee...THAT'S ALL FOLKS!
Laura, shut up, you're done, cooked, fried, go away!
George, you look like mike tyson on lithium in that picture LOL.

Charles from Atlanta   January 14th, 2009 1:00 am ET

They will comfortably enjoy the rest of their life while several generations of American will continue to pay for the damage and clean up the mess created by his administration. Sadly, 27% of American still think he did a good job. When he landed on aircraft carrier announced major combat has completed with "mission accomplished" banner displayed, just like a child told his dad "see, I can do it, it is easy...", what a childish play. He was on vacation during hurricane Katrina. And he doubled the national debt to 10+ trillions. Can you image if all the money and resource spent on War on Iraq were used for domestic programs and enhance Amierican economy?

CHICHI   January 14th, 2009 12:59 am ET

Say what you may of GWB, he kept America safe. Bush had alot to deal with and he did. So give him a break!!!!!

Darren D. Johnson   January 14th, 2009 12:46 am ET

Sarah   January 14th, 2009 12:31 am ET

Only a few more days of this sort of lunacy. I wish he had the dignity to just leave quietly. But of course, he is too stupid and self-absorbed to simply do the right thing. Please leave... now.

Jana   January 14th, 2009 12:29 am ET

Laura is from that age of 'blind love'. She is SO above him.

Larry in Houston TX   January 14th, 2009 12:24 am ET

No wonder she is going to live in the Dallas area, while he spends time in Crawford.......I think she just tolerates him...

Barack wins and America Capitalism and the productive will lose?   January 14th, 2009 12:17 am ET

Barack ran a campaign of acting like the world was coming to an end because of Bush, the sad fact is that we really will feel like the world is coming to an end with Baracks, high regulation, high tax and spend policies take effect, causing the hard working capitalist and productive amongst us to be controlled by this ever growing Government sloth.

Barack's, anti-business, anti-trade, high taxes, union strengthening, Cap and Trade policies and the silencing of the voices of conservatives with the fairness doctrine will be a real change, however, sadly it will be a real change for the Worse!!!

Thankfullly, we have another round of elections in two years and we can boot the far left socialist liberals out, and finally get Change we can believe in.

The kind of change that believes in the American people and not the Government to make our lives better.

Sye the Pychic   January 14th, 2009 12:12 am ET

Good night and good luck.

End Of An Error   January 14th, 2009 12:10 am ET

Laura – news flash – Your husband was the worst thing to happen to this country since WWII or Vietnam.

Little George doesn't know about much of anything. He's in his own little world, cutting brush and probably dreaming of his days as a cheerleader.

The fact is that most of America can't wait until you two pack up and leave.

Madison, WI   January 14th, 2009 12:10 am ET

That last statement is hilarious ....

"I've done my best, though, to make sure I didn't bring the presidency down to that level."

There are so many ways that he brought the presidency and this country down, that's it's almost laughable what he said in hindsight.

Talk about being "out of touch."

Losers at CNN   January 14th, 2009 12:07 am ET

can't handle real comments can you ?

SadAmerican   January 14th, 2009 12:06 am ET

It can be argued that Gore won the 2000 election, but it can't be argued about the 2004 election. So, get over the whle "he lost both elections" thing. Goodness. It amazes me that people want me to show respect and teach my children to respect the President-Elect, but zero respect is being shown for our current President. You can hate Bush all you want, but the office of the Presidency still deserves respect. I am teaching my children they have to respect Obama only because he is in the office of the President and that office deserves my respect. But even though I hope he will prove me wrong and I will offer my respect, I don't have to agree with him or his policies. To the poster that said "the villiage is getting their idiot back"...well American's are "getting Adolf Hitler/Joseph Stalin to run our socialist country". Enjoy

Proud American   January 14th, 2009 12:02 am ET

"George didn't really even know about it because he didn't really watch it that much".Well spoken Laura. That pretty much sums up his entire presidency.
He didn't know about it and he really didn't watch it that much.Makes things look pretty good when you haven't paid attention for 8 whole years.
Did we pay for an 8 year supply of Thorazine for him or was that stupid grin just that of the VILLAGE IDIOT?

gregg45   January 13th, 2009 11:30 pm ET

im sure the bought media will never post this,,, why with almost a billion dollars , who cant be bought,, just a thought,,, proud american,,, u are just like all the others,,, follow the leader,,, never think,,, never feel,,, others are not like you,,, only your leader is right,, no other,, only him,, go with the flow,,, resistance is futile,,,

MikeH   January 13th, 2009 11:29 pm ET

Laura know she's wrong. If she want's to defend a pathological liar (her hubby) that's her call.

She's a fool to try to say anything else. George and Dick and Donald and Edward are war criminals and need to be brought to justice.

RNC-REPUBLICAN NAZI COMMITTEE   January 13th, 2009 11:12 pm ET

President Bush on Tuesday cautioned his successor, Barack Obama, "not to become an economic forecaster" after he takes office later this month.

Wrong, after 8 years of feel good lies, we need to hear the truth. If Bush had let us know how bad it was say last year, we might not be where we are now.

I will take a leader any day that delivers the bad news but gathers experts around to come up with a solution and follows it with a plan to fix it and not just ignore the issue.

The we cross our collective fingers and hope it works fot the sake of the country.

Just when you think it's safe to go into the water, someone cries: "Shark!" That's my impression of the Republican and PUMA (pseudo-Democrats). They wait, foaming at the mouth, for something, trivial it may be, to come from the PE Obama administration, then they attack. Every time they do, I will present the following list of just a few of the 'imperfect' from the last eight years.

The Bush Era: A Legacy of Crime and Corruption
1. Karl Rove (swiftboat king and then some)
2. ‘Scooter Libbey (perjury)
3. Tom Delay (money laundering)
4. Mark Foley (House Pages)
5. Alberto Gonzales (inappropriate conduct)
6. Dusty Foggo Executive Director/CIA/3rd in power (money
laundering, conspiracy-plea bargained to serve nmt 3 years)
7. Claude Allen (WH Advisor-caught shoplifting)
8. Armstrong Williams (paid propagandist)
9. Rep. Bob Fries (conspiracy and false statements)
10. Larry Craig (restroom/toe-tapping)
11. Ted Stevens (Alaska)
12. President Bush/VP Cheney (waged a fraudulent war)
And on and on and on…..
13. Sarah Palin (honorable mention for the crime of running a campaign into the abyss).

For the Observer, I agree.
Who said they were mistakes though? They were mistakes in some peoples eyes, not everybodies. In the future, once they have a chance (if we ever get it) to know what the Pres, CIA, FBI, and State departments knew at the times they made their decisions, their opinion may change too. For now, let the man leave office in peace. . Attacking this man does nothing for the USA or the World. Concentrate on the positive to occupy your minds

TyWebb   January 13th, 2009 10:52 pm ET

Gee..Bush "sort of" angered me over the last eight years.

The woman, just like anyone else, is entitled to their own opinion and feeling about anything that happens. Obama was entitled to his opinions as well. When did the First Amendment get nullified. Commrades we do not all think or act the same.

MEP   January 13th, 2009 10:45 pm ET

What about when you make a mess ( two, actually ) that destroy the modern world as we know it? In truth, Georgie did not know about much during his presidency. Ask Cheney for the real answers.

Mrs. Bush,
You're upset at Obama for saying bad things about Bush? We are really ticked off at your husband for flushing the economy down the toilet!

P.S. YOU CANNOT LOVE LAURA BUSH AND HATE THE HUSBAND GEORGE BUSH. IF YOU DO YOU ARE A HYPROCRITE.. AS THE BIBLE SAID YOU CANNOT BE DOUBLE MINDED EITHER YOU LOVE ONE OR HATE THE OTHER.

John G   January 13th, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Politics is politics. Laura Bush needs to understand that bad mouthing George was Obama's way of diverting our attention from his complete and utter lack of anything resembling a qualification to be President.

At this point all he has proven he can do is give a good speech and rehire a previous President's administration to run things for him while he looks for a dog.

chris - New York   January 13th, 2009 10:31 pm ET

I think GWB and his wife did fine. when asked questions that should not have been answered, he didn't. I love how commentators and writers will say why didn't he answer the question, or he answered poorly. who are they. they have no idea the amount of responsibility this man has dealt with the past 8 years. they probably couldn't even get a security clearance much less have an idea of what goes on in the world. like GWB said, Obama will realize this once he deals with the real world.

Observer   January 13th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

I think its normal for her to take insults to her husband personal if you ask me. I think Pres. Bush tried his best but of course americans are quick to crucify people who make mistakes. I cant wait for Obama to take his turn. I really like Obama and really watched him closely and really was excited about his victory but i know that the same people that cheered him on will turn on him quickly. I think the american public have what i call political ADHD

Audrey   January 13th, 2009 10:30 pm ET

Dear Laura: I am not "somehwat angry" at your husband – I am "totally angry at" your husband. Are you that naive or just blind as to what your husband has done to this World.

John Starnes Tampa Florida   January 13th, 2009 10:02 pm ET

And to think we got stuck with him for eight horrific years due to democracy in America being sabotaged by two tampered-with elections.....both of which he LOST. But the NeoCons had an agenda and there was plenty of money to be made if they could arrange a coup.....so they did....twice.

legal in nc   January 13th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

Just another avenue for the left to be able to bash Bush and take their eyes off their own problems with tax evading Geithner. It's easier I guess for them not to face their own problems if they can make fun of others.
