(CNN) - Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden has apparently released a new audio message calling for a jihad, or holy war, against Israel for its Gaza campaign.

The message is "an invitation" from bin Laden to take part in "jihad to stop the aggression against Gaza."

The audio message was posted on a radical Islamist Web site known for posting statements from bin Laden.

CNN could not independently confirm the authenticity of the message, but the speaker's voice was similar to recordings that bin Laden has made in the past.

The last time bin Laden released an audio message was in mid-May, timed to coincide with Israel's 60th anniversary. That message urged his followers to liberate Palestine.

Israel launched a military offensive in Gaza on December 27 to stop rocket strikes on southern Israel. The death toll in Gaza was nearing 1,000, including more than 300 children, according to Palestinian medical sources.

The Israeli toll stood at 13, including three civilians.

Oh, how powerless one feels as a mere observer. Amidst many of these agenda and emotion driven comments I fear something is amiss. Perhaps it's the fact that those with the most to lose are young children, some barely able to speak if at all, who are murdered in the sanctity of their own homes. Born on both sides of the conflict, these people have no control over what life they were born into: they just get screwed. Sadly, when it comes down to the "deciders", this consideration is subordinate to the interests of the ideologies and agendas of the few powerful, egotistical sociopaths that are in charge. No less sad is that these "big shots" can be found on both sides of the conflict. Because of this it is my humble opinion that the relatively few egomaniacs in power throughout the world will doom the rest of us to forever endure their wrath . . . until of course they manage to really screw things up for everyone and cause global catastrophe that may ultimately end it all for everyone. All of this just because people are too ignorant to realize that 6 billion people will simply never hold the same beliefs, thereby neccessitating the patience and understanding required to coexist. I guess none of this matters though as long as "Yaweh-alla's" will is done right everyone?

FreeNLovit – 'So give up, trying to blow them away from the face of the earth and live in peace with them.' That's the only part of your post that I agree with, simply because the rest is Religious prejudice at its peak!
So... 'Chosen Ones' are entitled to have their rights because they were 'Chosen' by God? And not just because they do exist? Or are you saying that 'Chosen Ones' have more rights than 'Non-Chosen Ones'?
In case that you're forgetting, the GOD worshiped by Jews, Christians and Muslims is but the same. There are many differences in the ways the worship is done by the believers of each faith/religion, and among each faith/religion believers as well. But they share the same monoteistic faith.
So GOD is with Jews, Christians and Muslims... and with the others that does not believes in Him as well.

It is now clear that Israel is a terrorist state.

FreeNLovIt   January 14th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

I hope the Arabs know that God is WITH the Jews and not with them or any of us. The Jews is God's Chosen People. To say that you want to get rid of them, you have to get rid of GOD.. Good luck in getting rid of God. So give up, trying to blow them away from the face of the earth and live in peace with them.

If the Cubans were lobbing 60 missles a day into south Florida, what would we do? The Israelis would be well within their rights to level Gaza to the ground. Hamas hides behind women and children and then whines to the international community when some of those women and children get killed in the crossfire. COWARDS!!

Douglas   January 14th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

Well now that Bin Laden has reached out to Hamas, there is pretty much no going back. At first I was thinking maybe Israel should pull out and stop, but after this it would be horrible for Hamas to build up more of some type with Laden.

Israel is absolutely correct in this instance. The claim that Israel has violated the principle of proportionality - by killing more Hamas terrorists than the number of Israeli civilians killed by Hamas rockets - is absurd. First, there is no legal equivalence between the deliberate killing of innocent civilians and the deliberate killings of Hamas combatants. Under the laws of war, any number of combatants can be killed to prevent the killing of even one innocent civilian.

Second, proportionality is not measured by the number of civilians actually killed, but rather by the risk posed. This is illustrated by what happened on Tuesday, when a Hamas rocket hit a kindergarten in Beer Sheva, though no students were there at the time. Under international law, Israel is not required to allow Hamas to play Russian roulette with its children's lives.

While Israel installs warning systems and builds shelters, Hamas refuses to do so, precisely because it wants to maximize the number of Palestinian civilians inadvertently killed by Israel's military actions. Hamas knows from experience that even a small number of innocent Palestinian civilians killed inadvertently will result in bitter condemnation of Israel by many in the international community.

Until the world recognizes that Hamas is committing three war crimes - targeting Israeli civilians, using Palestinian civilians as human shields, and seeking the destruction of a member state of the United Nations - and that Israel is acting in self-defense and out of military necessity, the conflict will continue.

OBL – just shut up! Why don't you join Bush and retire with him in Texas!!!!

JBecks   January 14th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Your consistent misinterpretation of terms like 'Jihad' is one of many reasons we will never resolve this conflict. My 'Jihad' is to get CNN to understand it means 'struggle' not 'holy war'. This kind of ignorance is hurting our cause, no matter how much better 'holy war' sounds for the ratings.

Israel should just pull back to its borders, and stop this aggressive settlement of the Palestine territory and that will alleviate the problems. What do they expect, when they are occupying and cutting off the daily requirements for those people to live in peace? Terrorism should be stopped, but on both sides. If people don't like what happened in the apartheid of South Africa, then they shouldn't agree with how Israel is treating the people of Palestine.

WHY – oh WHY, does the media give so much attention to Bin Laden!
He EXPECTS to get his name splashed across the world, and YOU – the media – are aiding and abetting him, doing it all for him!

Either say nothing at all, or a simple one liner that "he sent us a video again...." end of announcement. We don't need all the trumpets and flag waving accompanying it. Let him fade away.

Matt   January 14th, 2009 11:13 am ET

Israel's policies and behavior against Gaza and the Palestinian people are blatantly and undeniably racist. We need to stop supporting them, period.

Steven Grimes Manchester, NH   January 14th, 2009 11:11 am ET

Now this is starting to get hilarious. Is there any person left on earth that still believes in the boogey man? How dumb do these people think we are? Could anything be more ridiculous than this mythological creature known as Osama Bin Laden? Unicorns and the Tooth Fairy are more real.

Robin   January 14th, 2009 10:09 am ET

It starts. Brace yourself, it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Mike Philly   January 14th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Hey, at least it's not another non-story about Sarah Palin. Sadly, bin Laden is still relevant!
