A federal judge has ordered the White House to preserve its emails.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A federal judge has ordered the Bush White House to preserve its e-mails, just days before a new administration takes over.

The court's preservation notice Wednesday stems from a ongoing lawsuit by private groups over allegedly missing electronic messages, and allegations the
White House failed to properly monitor its internal communications among staff.

The issue has been a thorny legal and political one for outgoing Bush officials, who are in the process of transferring more than 300 million e-mail messages and 25,000 boxes of documents to the National Archives.

U.S. District Judge Henry Kennedy instructed officials to search all White House workstations "and to collect and preserve all e-mails sent or received between March 2003 and October 2005."

Uh...350 billion, divided by 300 million would be 1,167.00/person, not 1,000,000 per household. Despite all that's been done, the Bush administration has not changed the decimal system. :)

Concerned American Citizen   January 15th, 2009 2:17 am ET

Excuse me for being concerned but the 350 billion dollar stimulus package that our government is about to enact confuses me. In America their are approximately 300+ million people why can't our government give that money to the people at 1 million per household, allowing each family to pay off their debt, i.e. mortgages, credit cards, auto loans and so on. This not only would save the American family but also influx money back into banks, credit card companies, Auto manufacturers and so on. It seems to me to be a simple math equation spen 350 milion plus give it to the hard working people of this country which are the backbone of what America stands for, let us save our own country as oppsed to giving 350 billion dollars into the hands of the greedy capitalists who got us in this mess in the first place. It is a win win scenario. And as far as the G-7 is concerned after the dust clears and we as a people have saved our blessed land then sit down with the G-7 and figure out how to manage our world so that this type of saving tactic will not have to be used again.

You ask what right have I lost. How about one of the most sacred rights, that being the right to be secure in your property and possession. The Patriot act authorizes government agents to enter secretly and without warrants into any home or business in the United States of America.

If you don't think that that is a degradation of your constitutional rights, then please, read both the constitution and the patriot act.

I'm tired of this crap can't we just move forward?? It seems like the Democrats are stuck in the past and can't get over the blame game. Your savior has been elected maybe it will all be bright and sunny next week. If not we have to work as a team to fix our country not play games and throw stones. Time to roll up the sleeves and move our country forward learning from past mistakes. It almost seems to me like there is an underground movement to divide America so we will fight among and destroy ourselves.

God is punishing this country for electing an idiot.
Millions of citizens suffering economic hardships must not be joking matters for George Bush. Wars must not be a game for him to play.
He should write a book and entitle it "Mission Accomplished: America Destroyed".
He must be tried and executed for negligence, deceit, war crimes.
Such a despicable miserable failing idiot !

From an earlier post: "You asked for facts: Here they are:
1) Civil Liberties/Constitution completely destroyed with the Patriot Act
2) Two wars, no victory
3) Two Towers, it only took 4 planes to bring them down"

Wow. Are you on drugs or what? Constitution completely destroyed by Patriot Act? Have you looked at the congressional voting record for this for both parties? And how has the Constitution been "completely destroyed".

The problem I have with this kind of simplistic reasoning is that it fails to admit that we haven't had a major incident, probably because of things like the Patriot Act. And guess who would have been the first people SCREAMING at Bush for "not being tough enough" if something HAD happened without these actions...yes, YOU! Sadly, this nation is full of whiners and Monday Morning Quarterbacks, and the hatred for Bush completely whacks out your perception. Fine. Revoke the Patriot Act, and don't bother with some of the other things being done for security. When we have a major terrorist incident, you can bet that there will be heat like has NEVER been seen, and it will be laid right at YOUR feet...and the rest of the Democrats.

Bob   January 14th, 2009 11:10 pm ET

I can't wait for Bush to be out of office, not because I don't like him, but because it's going to be VERY funny to watch all you Bush haters continue to blame him for all kinds of stuff, and then of course when there will no longer be any rational way to blame Bush, well, you'll continue. Some time after that, when even irrational arguments don't work, you'll just go silent rather than be honest with yourself.

"As soon as men decide that all means are permitted to fight an evil, then their good becomes indistinguishable from the evil they set out to destroy."
CHRISTOPHER DAWSON

This is Bush's legacy to America-many, many people now believe that torture is justified, that spying on fellow citizens is justified, that stripping away our Constitutional rights is somehow necessary in the name of "protecting the homeland." (By the way Hitler first coined "homeland.") This is why he and Cheney and Rumsfeld and John Yue need to be brought to account...evil does not combat evil, and just because Bush said he could ignore laws does not make what he did legal. Doesn't it bother people that he and Cheney are now bragging about their crimes, as if they aren't crimes at all? America must be cleansed of these ideas before we become a different, suspicious, warring people and America ceases to exist.

Quote from NY Times: "Citing executive privilege, President Clinton today rejected subpoenas from Congressional Republicans to turn over records of private deliberations that led him to offer clemency last month to 16 members of a violent Puerto Rican nationalist group." Those emails should be thoroughly investigated, to find out how he and Cheney have unlawfully profited from the Iraq war, and use it to bring them to justice. If his own country doesn't have the guts to prosecute him, then the world should, for crimes against the humanity. The invasion of Iraq has no justification whatsoever. All those people killed and maimed are his fault only, and he just gets two shoes thrown at him, and even missing its target? What s lucky S.O.B.!

Danny Corrigan   January 14th, 2009 9:58 pm ET

It seems the Republicans should be calling for investigations of Bush after he leaves office most of all. If Repub politicans and their supporters call for investigations, they will have a leg to stand on should they feel Obama is going to do something that needs investigation. After the lack of investigations for torture, cooked intelligence, screwed up war and the war and hurricaine profiteering, I can't imagine what Obama would have to do to warrant an investigation.
In addition, Repubs have to go after BUSH if they have ANY HOPE of coaxing some Independents to vote Republican. They voted against the man the Repubs want to protect. You are showing them they are either wrong, or that Repubs don't believe in accountability for Repubs. Could extend your stay in the desert a couple of decades.

This a waste of time and money... Bush and Cheney certainly were not perfect and made mistakes and errors. They made bad decisions but if you looked at all the politicians included the Clintons and Obama you could dig deep up enough to hang them all. Lets not keep wasting time and money and effort for revenge. Remember everyone including congress both democrats and republicans supported the war to begin with and only when things went wrong did anyone start complaining.. I for one want a government that will protect me. If we can save one American life then I think we do what we have to. I want a president that is for America not the rest of the world and I do not care how other countries think of America.

How about the right to privacy, remember the PATRIOT ACT? That document basically stripped away half our constitutional rights, all under the guise of "national security". How about the right to a fair and speedy trial, or the right to due process, or the right not to be questioned without legal representation?

The last 3 things have only applied to the foreign fighters being held in Gitmo, but could have easily applied to anybody that the government deemed a "terrorist", or "enemy of the state". I personally hope that President Obama and the Congress overturn the PATRIOT ACT within the first 30 days.

I wonder if the judge was a democratic operative. I did not notice CNN labeling the judge one way or the other. They normally do that so that everyone knows if the possibility of bias exists. Well they report if it helps a liberal, but not when it’s a conservative. But since they did not, here are some facts. He was a political appointment by Clinton in 1997. Additionally he is also African American, not that it matters, but since African Americans vote 91% democrat the chances of him being biased are very strong.

I am confident that in another four years the Republicans will do the same to Obama. You know payback is a spiteful thing that democrats seem to have mastered with the help of left leaning media organization like CNN helping them every step of the way.

But I digress; I hope the lawyers make a fortune off this from the hate filled lefties that will never end their hated of anyone conservative. They deserve to know if all their hair brained lies have any credibility. You know like Pelosi's statement that “Bush secretly has Bin Laden in jail and is going to bring him out just in time to win elections." What an idiot she is, and you Democrats believed her Ha Ha Ha. Not that it is unusual for a left wing nut to believe any lie and conspiracy theory out there that tarnishes conservatives.

And I bet dollars to donuts that they will run an update often to keep you lefties happy, unless they find nothing then you will never hear the truth. Its only news if it hurts conservatives at CNN. Actually that should be their moto.

That's a BIG win for JUSTICE! Question is WHAT ARE THEY HIDING?

What the far-right-nuts posting here do not get, understand, comprehend is that BUSH & CHENEY ARE GUILTY of TORTURING, and CAN be brought to trial at the Hague for war crimes! You people of the far-right can continue to live in denial and reject the TRUTH. That's why the courts had to force them to keep the emails. Of course, wink.... wink..... we ALL know that the Bushies deleted, shredded and otherwise got rid of evidence that would condemn them!

All of you lefties are a bunch of speculators and conspiracy theorists of this administration. What you should be concerned with is Obama's reasoning with wanting to meet with Hamas, who want Israel wiped out and convert the world to Islam!

Perhaps some of you smelly and fat coffee shop nerds should close your laptops, put down the glazed cake donut, take a shower for once in over 2 weeks and clean up your acts!

hey mike mundy from texas, so why are so concerned with israel, could it be some sort of religious thing,, God looks with favor upon those who look with favor upon Israel.... i am sooooooooo glad, that you and so many other of my fellow countrymen are willing to give more money to Israel than anyone else for religious reasons.... gee thanks, its not like i could have used my own tax dollars for my own purposes, but people like you who feel you have a religious obligation to israel, have given the okay to give all of our money to one tiny little country.. thanks alot, now why dont you take your bush blinders off and realize you support a corrupt administration who serves their own agenda and only theirs...

take a shower and wash that bush filth off, you stink

WELCOME TO THE OBAMA SHOW!!!!!!!!!!!!,

kind of like all we heard from the right pundits that these last 8 years have been Clintons fault?

Peter (CA)   January 14th, 2009 5:58 pm ET

Herman @ 3:44-

This is rich...the White House e-mails are going to indict Democratic members of Congress? Wow, right wing delusions are getting more and more out there.

In regards to power-when one branch (the executive) is driven completely by one party and one ideology, it can be pretty powerful as we have seen the unchecked power and corruption of the last 8 years.
The legislative branch is usually not powerful because the balance of power is so close and one side can pretty effectively shut down the other. Let's see what happens in the next two years before the are any declarations.

monica in seattle   January 14th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

By the time they 'see' these documents and emails, they will have been gone threw. Sifted of all the speculation and proof of idiocracy. Too bad we don't have anything better to spend time and money on. Why is it possible for a small group of special interest morons to waste so much of our tax dollars on STUPID stuff.
-
Perhaps you've forgotten (or more likely wish to ignore) the waste of taxpayer dollars used to catch Clinton in a bj controversy without any substantial findings by Kenneth Starr pertaining to the "White Water scandal", his initial responsibility. Some where around $76-million tax dollars were wasted for no good reason. To you and your ilk, it's a waste of tax dollars when Republicans are investigated for REAL crimes but not when Democrats are hounded by a lawyer. And don't you guys hate lawyers?

gloria   January 14th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

What do our opponents mean when they apply to us the label "Liberal?" If by "Liberal" they mean, as they want people to believe, someone who is soft in his policies abroad, who is against local government, and who is unconcerned with the taxpayer's dollar, then ... we are not that kind of "Liberal." But if by a "Liberal" they mean someone who looks ahead and not behind, someone who welcomes new ideas without rigid reactions, someone who cares about the welfare of the people - their health, their housing, their schools, their jobs, their civil rights, and their civil liberties - someone who believes we can break through the stalemate and suspicions that grip us in our policies abroad, if that is what they mean by a "Liberal," then I'm proud to say I'm a "Liberal." John F. Kennedy, September 14, 1960

Yusuf   January 14th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

Jim C, are you serious? Do you really think Saying Obama will be like Clinton is a bad thing when it comes to the Clinton years? The Clinton years were the most prosporous years in American history. More jobs were created than both Bushes combined. Do you really think if we moved away from the disasters that were created by Bush to a Clinton-like economy, that would be a bad thing????? I really really hate people who try to rewrite history. Just because you say stupid things loudly, does not make you right. Let’s say this clear for all of the far right people on this blog, Bush’s presidency can not hold a candle to Clinton’s. The job market blossomed during the Clinton years! Go and read any recent history book and look at the boom years that was the 8 years Clinton was in office. I swear, Republican minded people are hard to figure out. You can watch everyone around you losing jobs and suffering and yet you say, “Obama will destroy this country”. You all are a bunch of nut jobs.

lovable liberal   January 14th, 2009 5:43 pm ET

norma - Wisconsin   January 14th, 2009 5:42 pm ET

I think the losers (being the Repubs) need to take a 10 year course in truth vs. fiction. I don't recall anyone ever saying that the corruptiveness of the Republican party erases all of the corruptiveness of the Democratic party – which you consistently allude to. If you take every acquaintance, person you attended a meeting with, went to school with, lived next door to, spoke to in the hallway of the Senate Chambers and dissected them for some sinister act they participated in by knowing these people..................who would be left. Those of you who voted twice for Bush, who actually stole his election (which you'll never admit) ought to find it somewhere in your conscious to at least give Mr. Obama a year of his presidency to see if our country won't be in a better place. We gave you 8, and for what?

Mike   January 14th, 2009 5:39 pm ET

G.R.I.T.S - Girl Raised in the South   January 14th, 2009 5:38 pm ET

There are a lot of angry, ignorant, frightening neo-cons out on this board today. They all need to get a clue and figure out that the President of the United States of America is NOT above the law, never has been and never will be, and that he or she works for US. This is OUR government and our elected officials are answerable to us. Period. That is why any e-mails of an incriminating nature regarding the firing of US Attorneys, WMDs, etc. must be released. As the CEO of a corporation, you would not allow your employee to embezzle millions of dollars and delete the e-mails that might provide proof. Same here, only we are the CEOs.

As far as Bush and his WMDs, he acted on faulty intelligence, people make mistakes and sometimes believe the wrong information. However, in this case, the information was provided by individuals and organizations with a definite anti-Saddam slant. Those individuals who encouraged Bush to invade Iraq, regardless of Iraq's lack of involvement in 9/11, were those same individuals who signed the letter sent to Bill Clinton in the 1990s. That letter, from the organization PNAC, requested the removal of Saddam Hussein nearly 10 years before our invasion of Iraq. If Bush had truly considered the source, and truly wanted to make the correct decision, he would have discounted those opinions of the demonstrably rabid coup-mongers. But he didn't and that makes him responsible for an unjust invasion, unjust occupation, and the unjustifiable deaths of thousands of Americans and Iraqis.

KenM   January 14th, 2009 5:35 pm ET

@John: "When will we ever move this country forward instead of backward" I'll tell you when....when the voting electorate take their responsibility seriously....when they can correctly analyse and respond to a situation when they are asked to vote for a person who all his life has shirked duty, gotten other people to take on his responsibilities, failed at every endeavor he ever attempted, only to be bailed out by Daddy's influence and money.....when they can correctly analyse and respond to the situation when by some nation-wide lapse of reason a problem child got into office, only to continue the very same track record of failure that was evident before the first election. Many of us have put up for 8 long years with the abhorrent failure inflicted on this country, twice, by many of its own citizens, knowing from the start that horrible choices were being made. And we have watched over the last 8 years as only so very slowly many finally realized their mistake. We as a country should look back in hopes of learning lessons so we do not repeat failure, and maximize our chance for success, going forward. I think 2000 was an unfortunate example of doing what you propose now, to move forward for the sake of moving forward, without the requisite analysis of the past and what is presently before us. There are some things this country has to hammer out, some evils it has to exorcise, otherwise the stench of [R] failure will be with us for a very long time.

ej   January 14th, 2009 5:34 pm ET

There should have already been a system in place to backup all email from the White House. Obviously this order will be circumvented. We Americans elected Bush to a second term, knowing full well what kind of president he was, though I personally voted against Bush four times: twice as governor and twice as president.

I don't want to spend a lot of our national energy trying to prosecute a bunch of guys who were doing exactly what we knew they were doing. We went along. Our protests were feeble at best until the economy imploded. There were times during the campaign when the majority of Americans said they were going to vote for McCain.

We have more important things to do.

Say what you will about the man's judgement or intelligence or public speaking ability, but to run amok screaming over and over that the guy was ill-intentioned or unpatriotic or racist is absolutely ridiculous. Anyone who has met the man in person – Democrat, Republican, Liberal, Conservative, Media, Lobbyist, Athlete.... they all say the same thing. Mac   January 14th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

True, that unfortunately none of this will result in criminal indictments. However its important to uncover the smoking guns in those files for posterity so the Bush-apologists can't substantiate their revisionist history.

RIck   January 14th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

There's only one reason to show reluctance to handing over emails or any other documentation:

You are hiding something. Plain and simple.

Simpliticus   January 14th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Can't catch me if you don't know the details! Ever since Watergate, Cheney and others always knew that too many details regarding the goings on would spell death to any administration desiring to get around the Constitution. And it was that aim to hide any and all transactions, even e-mails. So it is nice that this might be around so as to uncover the detritus under the rocks left behind by this administration. This might even be better than the Nixon tapes!

Sean the thinker   January 14th, 2009 4:54 pm ET

Thomas,

I agree !!! This was a GOOD use of our tax dollars. The American people deserve to have a government thats transparent and accountable.

Whether this court ruling appeases the psychotic partisan left is a moot point.

Bill in California   January 14th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

The question from Mike Philly bemused me enough to answer his heartfelt concern about accountability and justice.
Believe it or not, like it or not we will ALL of us be held accountable and justice WILL be served. Not by your standards, not by my standards but by the ONE who has set the standards.
I will gladly trace the Bushes footsteps to that seat of judgement. Can you say the same thing of your new found "Messiah" who's top priorities include killing human life in the womb and ensuring that gays can thrust their lifestyle upon those who want to avoid it in the military and elsewhere.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   January 14th, 2009 4:48 pm ET

And knowing how quick this administration is to follow the law, those e-mails will be long gone before anybody realizes it.

The Bush Administration started wiping its bottom with the Constitution from the day it entered the White House and hasn't stopped since. What makes anybody think this crowd will suddenly "get religion" and follow a judicial order? This is the same crowd that thumbed its nose at the Valerie Plame scandal and basically told all of us to get over it!!!

It's amazing to see the comments of some of the people here trying to turn this on Obama and the man isn't even in office. Please, how does this have anything to do with Obama. This was the Bush administration to you guys how are making these comments. My goodness.

Lori   January 14th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

Remember, Stalin killed 12 million of his own people and died of old age. Nothing will happen to bush and cheney. I won't even capitalize their names.

lemmy youu vannn   January 14th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

so now that we have a black president we are talking about all the e-mail , I think that the judge who issue the court order is trying to suck up to the new elected president and trying to suggest that there was some bad discrimination e-mail about black people that might damage the bush administration which is already damaged by the stupid action they been doing from the war on iraq to the war on gaza, I am sure that there are lots of damaging e-mails.
thank you very much.

Snake eyes   January 14th, 2009 4:34 pm ET

THE POINT IS OUR GOVERNMENT IS SUPPOSED TO BE TRANSPARENT. I DONT CARE IF BUSH ORDERED A PIZZA VIA EMAIL; I WANT TO BE ABLE TO FIND OUT. IF HE WANTED PRIVACY HE SHOULD HAVE STARTED HIS OWN PRIVATE OIL EXPLORATION COMPANY.

OH, WAIT, HE DID, AND RAN IT INTO THE GROUND.....

Why would we be under the impression that they will follow this court order? Dubya and his administration has yet to follow the rule of law. They will simply get rid of them and if they are ever put under oath will use the tired "I don't recall" political get out of jail line....

Pog Mahon   January 14th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

Joyce in Indiana   January 14th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I wonder how many people know that the Bush administration used laptops provided by the RNC in attempt to circumvent the law requiring preservation of e-mail that deals with official government business. Why would they do this but to hide something?

There can be no legitimate fear for national security because the records are to be released to the National Archives, not the New York Times. Anything truly a matter of security would have been redacted before release to the public. The only possible reason for a stunt like this is to withhold evidence from future generations.

Thomas   January 14th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

More good use of our tax dollars to apease the psychotic partisan left.

HouseDiva   January 14th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

Bush and Cheney should be investigated to the fullest extent!!!

Joe   January 14th, 2009 4:30 pm ET

I wonder how many law's governing the operations in the White House will be changed during Obama's administration. No way he will release his private emails, recordings, letters, etc... Further, when people yell foul he and many fellow Democrats will play the race card AGAIN saying that anyone who questions Obama's motives are racists. He already has violated the Constitution in his appointment of Hillary Clinton to Secretary of State. He appointed a tax evader to the office of Secretary of the Treasury. Who's next? Dr Kevorkian as Surgeon General? Hey Obama! Why not just send a nuke straight up and let it come back down on the United States and kill us all now? Why make us suffer before you destroy this country? Do it fast, like pulling off a band-aid.

TCM   January 14th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

WOW...how fast the judge acted on this....too bad they couldn't act that fast on other important matters....like...oh...let's say birth certificates for presidential candidates....and when they do act on it, not to merely sweep it under the carpet to further their own liberal agenda.

It's amazing how hypocritical dems are; after the treasonous act of supporting one of the most anti-American families that will occupy the White house......and you pukes are criticizing Bush? Just wait until the terror starts hitting in this country because of the waffle you've elected....

sick n tired   January 14th, 2009 4:29 pm ET

Of course, we've got a mayor here in Detroit (and his mistress) in jail over text message regarding perjury..Hey, maybe this'll work, after all!

Craig B   January 14th, 2009 4:27 pm ET

What exactly will change in your life, your children's life, etc etc... if you know what GW's emails said? Really, seriously think about it... Even if he had a big curly-hair winky, smiley face emoticon after his email to his chiefs of staff saying that he wanted to go to war to avenge daddy Bush, or sending naked pictures of Cheney to Bill Clinton, or whatever else he's being alleged with in his emails... How does that concern us?!?

There will NEVER be full disclosure of anything. It's bad for national security, and it's frankly none of our business! We elected this man to make decisions for our country, and he has done so. It is NOT our place to second guess those decisions, and demand to see the intelligence that went into it. Just quit with the theories, and realize that the court has no place in this... all the left-wing conspiracy theorists and the new right-wing ones getting ready to come crawling out of the woodwork need to suck it up and find something better to do with their time.

I say good for them for not disclosing it, good for them for shredding things that have no place in our "almighty" courts (maybe they should go back to investigating steroids in baseball?), good for them for standing up to these liberalist morons who think that we can all drink tea and eat crumpets and braid each others hair "and the world will live as one"...

To sum it up - the courts, on paper, can tell the executive branch what to do... But, come on..... seriously... he's the president... he can, and will, do whatever in the heck he wants to do... and will smile that great smile the whole time he does it.

To joe kirby and Mike Mundy anyone else still angry over the election results:

Like it or not, in six days we will see Barack Obama take the oath of office and become the 44th President of the United States.

As a wise man once said, sometimes you can't control the situation — all you can control is your attitude toward it.

Even if you did not vote for Obama, and even if you wish anyone else but him were becoming president next week, we all need to unite as Americans to work our way out of the economic crisis we are in.

Anger and bitterness from those who opposed Obama — or smugness and arrogance from those who supported him — will only keep us mired in the misery we all want to escape.

mike   January 14th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

So, the guy misleads the country into war, hundreds of thousands are killed, he authorizes torture and this is the best our democracy can do. Its sad and pathetic. I thought democracy was suppose to empower the people, but of course Bush is beyond our power. This makes me sick!

Miltrez   January 14th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Sho what? It can't be any worse than what the Clintons did? At least all of Bush's friends are still alive and not dead, or trying to carry stuff out in their underpants...Unlike the whole Clinton to Bush transition.

Its too bad Bush couldn't get the chairs reupholstered when he moved in after the "cigar-man" desecrated the Oval office.

The tail wagging the dog, until they both tire! This will be challenged, then reversed, thus going to the appeals court, then onto the Supreme Court who will refuse to hear it,and throw it back to the courts, who indeed eventually find lack of evidence? Case closed,...

Mickie   January 14th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

Oh please, like they will start obeying the laws now. Why should they when nobody ever has to face the consequences of their wrongdoings, whether legal or just immoral, right Bush?

Moving on   January 14th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

By the way,

Why all the frustration? If you still like the Bush administration, you got your way — two terms. Quit complaining, at least until the rest of us decide he should stand trial as a war criminal.

If you don't like the Bush administration like the vast majority of the people in this country, you have the majority of your fellow Americans including yourself to blame. To many of the people in this country practice sloppy voting habits. You vote for the guy because you would like to have a beer with him. You vote over religious issues. Why not vote for the best leader, based on issues that matter to all Americans, like consumer protection, foreign policy, the economy, and healthcare?

Or maybe — like most Americans — you're too wrapped up in your 9-5 job, carting your kids to and from school/soccer practice, and your television. Perhaps you were too busy to pay attention.

Friends, this disastrous past 8 years — regardless of what you have preached or how you voted — is everyone's baby. Lets just be honest about that, take responsibility, and do better next time.

By remaining so complacent as a whole, we are begging crooks and schemers to take this country over.

Jeanne from AZ   January 14th, 2009 4:10 pm ET

I really have got to stop reading all of these comments. I cannot believe that you all are so obtuse. Do you not understand how serious this is???
You are so wrapped up in you idealogical positions that you aren't seeing the real threat. If we continue to allow the systematic breakdown of our rights, the laws then we might as well dispose of the Constitution and just let the government become a kingdom or dictatorship. This adminstration has circumvented virtually every check and balance. They have rendered the Congress to ineffective, have stacked the Justice Department, Civil Rights Department to their "Team, have stomped on everything that America has stood for. They have lied to the American people and they have bankrupted this country. Hopefully the next Administration is good and lucky maybe by the time I die the Country will be where we were 8 years ago.

I certainly am thankful that I do not have any children to have to live thru what I see as a devestated America.

helped myself   January 14th, 2009 4:09 pm ET

Get real. She was covert. She was outed by the WH Administration et al. And, that amounts to treason. Period.

Bush and Cheney are criminals, so is Rove and they should all be brought to justice.

Fortunately, as stated in the senate confirmation yesterday, the new secretary of state and foreign policy direction for this country will rebuild the destruction of the non-poliferation unit within the CIA and actually do something *useful* in the war on terror. This country will be much better served when new leadership that have both an IQ and integrity are in place.

I thank fcking god(pick one) Bush and Cheney's rule is near its end.

GS-Florida   January 14th, 2009 4:06 pm ET

Bush and Cheney have treated the courts and the US Constitution as a pure annoyance...something to get around by using the Whitehouse hack-lawyers. They feel like they are above the law. This should have been challenged years ago. This election shows that more people are sick and tired of the abuses. It's our government NOT Bushes' government. He was sworn " to protect and defend the constitution." Not twist it! Any violation of law by this Whitehouse has to be procecuted to the fullest. wire tapping, torcher, outting CIA agents, destroying documents. Just to skim the surface !

So a court order states they have to abide by the law, then some crackpot dipstick in the justice dept starts spouting off about the unitary executive theory stating that the president is omnipotent and, because of his omnipotence, cannot be held to account for anything. Additionally, the government is rife with "pinkos" and "left leaning libs", who cannot be trusted with such state secrets, etc.. ad nauseum. Yada yada, on and on, blah blah blah

Wow Mike Mundy,
What an intelligent and articulate criticism. You Republicans sure know how to "wow" the world with your keen intellect. I'll have you know that I shower daily and maybe if you spent some time on your laptop...doing what us lefties refer to as "research" (crazy, I know), you might be able to come of with a more constructive and articulate comment. By the way, preservation of emails and documentation is a LAW written to hold our government accountable to us THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. I'm not quite sure how, or why, you would argue against such a thing.

Jim   January 14th, 2009 3:59 pm ET

But deleting those emails is keeping us safe from the terrorists.

Speaking of e-mail.....   January 14th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

CNN–can you give us an update on David Kernell, the son of a Democratic Tenn. Legislator who hacked into Sarah Palin's e-mail account and then published it.

He was supposed to go on trial Dec 16 and could be given a $ 250.000 fine and 5 years up the river.

Please put your update on the Ticker.

Thank you.

It is amusiung to hear the right wing groaning when Bush is forced to obey the law. He and his staff knew the rules all along, and now, because they're told they must obey them, they cry foul or hiss about "conspiracy theories." This guy was a disaster as President. It's time to admit it and move on.

joe kirby   January 14th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

Our soon to be President finally has something positive on his resume'. Let's see, so far he has been an admitted drug user, a fund raiser for ACORN which is a semi-legal outfit that seems to hate whites and help blacks, a friend to white hating minister Wright, a friend to muslim Farrakan, a friend to terrorist Ayers, a husband to a 'never been proud to be an American wife' (who got a 300% pay raise the week he got elected to the senate), a friend to a Syrian swindler (Resko) who helped him get his house, but finally he can put on his resume' that he is the President of the US (but hates to wear flags and cross his heart for our national anthem.) Makes me proud to be an American and watch him CHANGE America back to the Clinton years and pursue Socialism.

Brad   January 14th, 2009 3:51 pm ET

I am sure this crooked administration is busy trying to figure a way to get around this court order. lol

Jen   January 14th, 2009 3:49 pm ET

Well too bad they already deleted all the ones that say anything worse than "Is this Starbuck's or Seattle's Best?"

Eric   January 14th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

They'll just delete the e-mails anyway. What will they do, send them to life in prison for deleting e-mails? Chances are the contents of the e-mails contain far more incriminating information that would get them in deeper trouble than if they just cleaned them out. Sad, we most likely will never know what happened behind the scenes. Cheney is a criminal and belongs behind bars.

Mugwump   January 14th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

My, my, my, what will all the consiracy theorists have to vent about after January 20, 2009, when President Bush leaves office?

Oh yeah...there will be another group of conspiracy theorists questioning Obama's ethics and deceptive actions as president.

All are only a bunch of know nothing whiners.

Meh   January 14th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

They need to get ahold of the hard drives on their computers. You know they've long since deleted any evidence.

Mike Mundy, Houston, TX   January 14th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

All of you lefties are a bunch of speculators and conspiracy theorists of this administration. What you should be concerned with is Obama's reasoning with wanting to meet with Hamas, who want Israel wiped out and convert the world to Islam!

Perhaps some of you smelly and fat coffee shop nerds should close your laptops, put down the glazed cake donut, take a shower for once in over 2 weeks and clean up your acts!

Maggie   January 14th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Even if they delete the e-mails, nothing is ever really deleted on the internet. It'd be easy enough for a computer wiz to get the e-mails back.

The emails will never become public because people like Dingy Harry Reid, Stretch Pelosi, Barnyard Barney Frank, The Messiah Obama, Hillary, Lurch Kerry, Dentures Biden, The Swimmer Kennedy and the like will have their names all over it, and the truth will prevail and hurt. You people really believe that the executive branch of government has more power than the legislative may want to study up on your constitutional law. It is not going to be pretty, and this will get hushed up in a NY minute. You wait and see...poof, where did they go?

dimes1   January 14th, 2009 3:43 pm ET

Greg Ebert, Portland, OR   January 14th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Ex-Republican   January 14th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I think if they fail to comply, we should make them a HUGE, unprecedented example of these domestic terrorists. It would send a beautiful message to the world if we were to lock up Bush and Cheney at Levinworth, for LIFE, and only when all documents have been released, will they. But they will only be released to stand trial for ALL war crimes and constitutional laws they have broken...

Triple life sentences for EACH of them. Make an example out of the terrorists...Bush and Cheney

JasonA   January 14th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

Dan66   January 14th, 2009 3:39 pm ET

Rorschach   January 14th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

'Bout time. After turning the DOJ into a political-patronage chop shop I'm honestly surprised they've ordered Bush to preserve these records.

Jason B.   January 14th, 2009 3:34 pm ET

Sadly, I must concur. This administration seems to have ignored Constitutional law before...why would they care now? What could the Courts do? Jail him?

Or the administration will just start crying "State secrets!" again and put it all back into hiding.

Is it sad that I feel so cynical with this Administration??

G.R.I.T.S - Girl Raised in the South   January 14th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Who believes for a single second that the Bush administration will follow the judge's order? These criminals will walk scott free!

Terry, Lakeland Florida   January 14th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

I mean, c'mon, they outed a CIA agent.

Wait Bush did that? I thought the facts said he didn't, ya that's right you left wing nuts only listen to the other left wing nuts.

dickiebyrd   January 14th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

Aww, c'mon......they're all 'boy scouts' after all!

PSYCHE! ! !

The judge has essentially said not so fast buddy! Good ruling.

Grog in Ohio   January 14th, 2009 3:28 pm ET

Exactly what makes anyone think that the Bush/Cheney crime syndicate will start paying any attention to what a court or judge demands?

Prepare for a flood of preemptive pardons any minute now for crimes ranging from torture to document destruction to outing CIA operatives.

6 days till the end of the Bush administration.

boered1   January 14th, 2009 3:22 pm ET

About time.. but I guess they had to give the idiots in chrge time to destroy the incriminating ones BEFORE this order came out.. I can hear them now "but we didn't KNOW that we could not destroy them.. wink wink" but then again bush can just say it is "executive privildge' and destroy them anyway so why bother with the courts bush has not listened to them yet

idiots

What makes anyone think that traitor-liars Bush and Cheney are going to start obeying the law now?

I mean, c'mon, they outed a CIA agent. You can't get much lower than that. Oh yeah, you can.

And, they did.

Mike Philly   January 14th, 2009 3:15 pm ET

Cheney and Rumsfeld must be pooping their pants over this. You know that this administration couldn't wait to destroy the evidence of so much wrongdoing. Still, you have to wonder: In a world where OJ Simpson got off for killing his wife, where the Bush administration was able to break so many laws and kill so many innocents, in a world where Bush was able to steal his way into office in the first place... Will any of these crooks ever really be held to account and brought to justice? Doubtful.
