Paterson said Friday he would pick Clinton’s Senate replacement next week.

(CNN) - New York Gov. David Paterson said Friday he is prepared to announce who will replace Hillary Clinton in the Senate immediately after the presidential inauguration.

In an interview on New York radio station WFAN, Paterson said he had planned on making the announcement this weekend, but later decided the timing would be better next week.

"We now know that Sen. Clinton is going to be the secretary of state. She sailed through her committee hearing," Paterson said "I would probably have done it this weekend, but I decided I didn't want to trample on Sen. Clinton's ability to come back and say farewell to her constituents, or the inauguration."

"Right after the inauguration, I expect to be getting to that," he added.

Paterson, who alone has the power to appoint someone to replace Clinton for two years, also dismissed recent polls showing more New Yorkers want state Attorney Gen. Andrew Cuomo for the post rather than Caroline Kenedy.

"The polls go up and down, it was somebody else a few weeks ago," he said. "I think that's more name recognition. There are some great candidates who have distinguished themselves who are not as well known."

Two recent polls both showed Kennedy has lost significant support among New Yorkers since she first expressed interest in the job.

But ultimately, Paterson said, his job is not to pick the candidate who’s most popular at the moment.

"It's the person who is going to be popular in 2010, when they run for re-election," the New York governor said.

Picking Caroline Kennedy will prove to be polictical suicide for Patterson in 2 years. Andrew Cuomo will squash her or Patterson, whichever position he chooses to run in a primary for.

Fitty Scents   January 16th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Hey folks let's look ahead to the 2012 and 2016 Pres. elections.

Caroline would squash one Palin. If Barack doesn't run in 2012, Caroline could very well be the next Pres. America is now ready for the First Madame President.

Has she had any marital infidelity??? She truly a great person for the Senate, and one day for the presidency. I am a republican, and I love Barack as president. Go Caroline!!!

Hillary has conceded any future run for President, if not what a ticket Hillary/Caroline!!!!!!!!

Karen- Change is coming   January 16th, 2009 4:46 pm ET

Please let it be Caroline Kennedy... she's an outsider and she can work well for the citizens of New York. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

Pat J   January 16th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

NO KENNEDY! Cuomo YES, Caroline NO!

boered1   January 16th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

I am continualy pleased reading all you people on this blog crying about "Qualifications" and some requirement to hold public office before oyu can be a federal representative 9including President) it simply shows that you never bothered to look at what our founding fathers wrote or the concept they had for this REPUBLIC (we are NOT a democracy and were NEVER intended to be one no matter what your third grade teached and the current president say!) The founding fathers spoke out about lifelong politicians. they specifically commented they wanted (Hancock is who I am paraphrasing now) Citizen Statesmen. Washington spoke often about the duty of AVERAGE CITIZENS to become representatives. Franklin openly worried that if we ever had career politicians we would lose the basis for our government. But you idiots cry that the person is not enough of a politician.. and then spend the rest of your lives whining about how Washington only listens to the lobbyist and does not hear the people.

idiots

LaTanya   January 16th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

It amazes me to read all the comments about wanting someone with all these qualifications. All the so called experts in Washington got us in the position we are in and they had all these QUALIFICATIONS. I say bring on Caroline Kennedy and some fresh blood. We need people in Washington that have LOGICAL thinking, which in my opinion is a lot better than all these QUALIFICATIONS that right now have America sinking.

Most of you are right, Caroline Kennedy has money, power, position and she does not have to work a day in her life if she doesn't want to. But, she has said she is willing to get in there and do what it takes to help New York and the Country. The Kennedy Family have been a part of public service their whole lives, nearl all of them if not all serve the public in some way and Caroline leads the way.

Ommy   January 16th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

This is NOT about serving the people of New York, this is all about the Kennedy ego.

Antony   January 16th, 2009 4:16 pm ET

Plizz...........give us Caroline Kennedy. Can you imagine Gov. Peterson and senator Caroline Kennedy in Newyork? Caroline is just good for our hearts!!!

Fred C Dobbs   January 16th, 2009 4:05 pm ET

Does it matter that Caroline Kennedy has failed to ever hold public office?

Does it matter that she frequently has even failed to vote in a general election?

Does it matter that she now holds the NY Times record for saying "you know" in a thirty minute interview?

One wonders if a deal was struck for her & the uncle's endorsement – Barack Obama wins > offers a high level cabinet post to Hillary Clinton and Caroline is appointed to the senate seat vacated by Clinton. Think it couldn't happen in just that manner?

aware   January 16th, 2009 3:52 pm ET

Anyone but Caroline! :)

Charlie   January 16th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

You know, I am a lib, so, qualifications or not , double standard or not, I must got this job, you know.

Brad   January 16th, 2009 3:40 pm ET

As a New Yorker, please not Caroline Kennedy. Time to end the age of the the Kennedys.

Ennis, LA   January 16th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

Cuomo could easily trounce Patterson in a hard-fought primary
for governor. Caroline Schlossberg or no.

Jeanine   January 16th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

First of all, Gov. Paterson is not corrupt like the idiot in Illinois or the so-called governor of Alaska (she gave her future son-in-law (?) a job in which he was not qualified to have). Secondly, Caroline Kennedy does have experience (more than certain individuals). In case some of you have read or heard on the news, Andrew Cuomo, son of former Governor Mario Cuomo, former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development and former husband of Caroline Kennedy's cousin (catch a pattern) is also running. Could it be that he wants the seat out of spite towards the Kennedy family? At least she has the heart to want the seat and I know that she will be a great senator following in the footsteps of her father, uncles and Hillary Clinton.

sg   January 16th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

I'm so glad I don't live in NY anymore! I bet she gets the seat. Obama owes the Kennedy's for their support over Hillary. Patterson seems like a puppet. Big time payback is coming.

sharon   January 16th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

There is lots of governing to do in NY for the next few years.I would think that an experienced candidate is needed at this time..not an apprentice(Kennedy).PE Obama said things will get worse until they get better. That should be your first clue. One has to hit the ground running..something I think Mrs. Kennedy is unable to do.At this point in time, I don't think the senate needs a seat warmer.

Randy   January 16th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Who ever is picked has two years to prove to the people of New York that they are doing a good job. If they don't do a good job, elect someone else. Some of these comments seem like this is a life time appointment. If Kennedy, Cuomo, or anyone else that wants the job isn't picked they can start to run for the next election in about... 10 days from now. By the way, if any of the interested people that didn't get picked don't run 2010, then Paterson made the right pick

Amber   January 16th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

There is NO "replacing" Hillary Clinton. There will be someone who "takes her spot", but never anyone to replace her. She's the greatest! Leading lawyer, First Lady, Senator, Secretary of State-–Next stop....Commander in Chief 2016. If people don't vote for her then with all her brains, balls, qualifications, etc.....then I deem the United States officially retarded!

the idiot   January 16th, 2009 2:34 pm ET

Again, no election. This is just like the USSR of the cold war, only at least they would have a sham electino to ensure one party control. The Democrats don't even go through that charade.

LYNETTE IN CA   January 16th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Go Caroline!

S. Callahan   January 16th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Gov. Patterson, I strongly encourage you to search your heart, and seek God's wisdom, in picking the next Sen. for New York State.
It's hard to fill the shoes that Sen. Clinton walked in as she had great access of her own, and her husbands. With that in mind, I personally would encourage you to Pick Caroline Kennedy. It's a sneeze to hear others say she doesn't have experience..she does..and it came from the trenches of NYS..where it counts most. She knows our citizens, she made herself to be among them and not just the rich. She has brought out the best in some of the worst.

Ommy   January 16th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

Very hard for anyone to replace Hillary.

She knows more and works harder than anyone.

And New Yorkers have rewarded her talent and ability with sky high approval ratings, a landslide election and a mind blowing 70% for re-election.

She will be missed but at least her considerable talents will be put to good use as Sec. of State.

Erik from Real Pennsylvania   January 16th, 2009 2:12 pm ET

Andrew Cuomo.

Jackson, Seattle   January 16th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

I don't envy Patterson. No matter who he chooses, there will be multitudes of backlash. It is not an enviable position. Can we all just take a moment out of our campaigning and politicking, and just acknowledge that this man is not in an enviable position at this moment, and send him our best wishes. This is the second time in less than a year that this poor guy has been thrust into the national limelight because of someone *else's* decisions. Let's just all take a step back and give the man some breathing room and some support.

Mr Governor, I hope the rest of your administration goes more smoothly than this last year. You've more than earned it!!!

sensible Cape Coral l   January 16th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

As much as we may laugh/cry/scream at the Democrats' supposedly disorganized responses to issues, we must remember that these responses force us to re-think our decisions thus resulting in better legislation. Not the rubber stamp responses of the past 8 years.

@ Steve – Well put. Gov. Patterson should realize that it's not a popularity contest, so who will be most "popular" in 2010 is irrelevent. Who is most qualified for New York now is what he should be thinking of.

tess   January 16th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

ANYBODY would be better than clinton – she only became a new york senator to have a place from which to run for president – don't the new yorkers realize that yet? they would have been better represented by blago – at least he was in the city he was suppose to be running – not running around the country trying to get elected to the office he really wanted and used the people to get there!!! when will americans wake up to the self-serving clintons and run them out of town(whatever town they call home for the moment)?????????

People interested in good Gov't.   January 16th, 2009 2:03 pm ET

We don't need another aristocratic, spoiled rich kid in there. These kids, think their money can buy them whatever they want, and they can simply point to a job, confident that it'll be handed to them, even without a shred of experience. No way.

Caroline Kennedy Schlossberg would be another "puppet" in Office with no background in gov't service. How would she operate? Same as Bush, someone else would be the Puppetmaster pulling the strings, and we all know what a disaster that was for him.

It's funny, she seemed to crawl out of the woodwork after all these years in seclusion when "Uncle Teddy" decided he wants to extend his Kennedy Dynasty. If there's a worse motive than that, I can't think of it.

C.J.   January 16th, 2009 1:55 pm ET

It should't be Kennedy or Cuomo. Neither are remotely qualified for the job. Is it not ironic that the same people who support these two inexperienced choices are probably the same that bashed the Palin pick (I'm not advocating her, because I too thought it was a terribel pick)? How funny it is how people forget.

Governor Patterson,
Just do what is best for your state, not for future politcal favors, or future elections. If you believe Kennedy is the best candidate for the job, select her. If not, select the one who is! Somebody has to have enough backbone to do what is right , even if it is not popular (Thanks Presidenyt Bush)! Serve your state and her people with honesty and integrity! We all have our opinions but when boiled down it is a New York issue!

Matt   January 16th, 2009 1:51 pm ET

Face it, politics is not about being honest or fair, its all about POWER!!

And the Kennedy's still have plenty it seems....

JJ   January 16th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

Mike–

That is a pathetic reach to inject your disdain for repubs into the discussion. No one benefits from Dems' squabbling, back room deals, and blatant disregard for the will of the people–no matter what party they belong to. Why don't you focus your efforts on cleaning up the mess/circus on your side of the aisle and not blaming the GOP for how your party can't handle itself.

Tim   January 16th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

In this ring, we have stumble-bumbing democrats trying to govern with a strait face. In that ring, we have down-trodden republicans looking more confused than ever. And in the center ring, we have the MSM trying to pretend like they understand what's going on.

Jen, Gainesville, FL   January 16th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Michael "C" Lorton, Virginia   January 16th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Good decision by Paterson--–it sounds like it is not going to be Carlone or Cumo--–looks like someone else will overshadow the two top forerunners.

legal in nc   January 16th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Why not pick Schlossberg, the left voted for a senator with NO EXPERIENCE for president so why not another person with no experience to fill a senate seat. This comedy show just keeps getting better and better!!!

Just like Democrats to cause trouble for America by wanting to fill positions with the crooks (Geithner, Rangel,Blago), inexperienced (Obama, Schlossberg) and mindless (Reid, Pelosi, Franks, Dodd) people.

Really do care about our country huh,,,, more partisan politics from the left!

Chris   January 16th, 2009 1:47 pm ET

Paterson to New York: Drop Dead

Pay-for-play, Kennedy style. No one pretends CK is the best choice for the people of New York – they don't like her and do not want her representing them. It is all about who can bring in the most cash for Paterson's re-election campaign.

Simpliticus   January 16th, 2009 1:45 pm ET

I am leaning toward Cuomo as the heir-apparent to Clinton's open senate seat. He has the polls going in his favor while Kennedy's numbers have been falling.

LaTanya   January 16th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

I think it should be Caroline Kennedy. She would bring new and fresh ideas to the Senate and that is exactly what our country needs. I'm sick of all the old Washington hounds playing politics at our expense. Go Caroline!!!!!

jan   January 16th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

caroline kennedy would be a great SENATOR------–

Mark   January 16th, 2009 1:43 pm ET

Well, doesn't that say it all. It is not the person that can do the job the best but the person that can get elected in 2010. As long as people like this are in power this country is going down the drain. They think of themselves and party first and country second (if that high).

James, Saint Louis MO   January 16th, 2009 1:42 pm ET

Sarah Palin should move to NYC in 2010. She has more experience than Caroline (I've done nothing) Kennedy.

Popularity????????   January 16th, 2009 1:42 pm ET

Yes, it's all about POPULARITY, not QUALIFICATIONS. What?? Patterson should be ashamed of himself for saying that.

rbk   January 16th, 2009 1:41 pm ET

This has really turned into a bit of a mess. The other day on the subway riding uptown in Manhattan, I heard a woman say, "Maybe Paterson will do the right thing and appoint himself."

Egads. Hopefully not. Here's one vote for Kirsten Gillibrand or Carolyn Maloney.

Simmy   January 16th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy-S. is still the best choice. Any other selection would show that political propaganda and pressure worked.
She would have a better chance at re-election than Cuomo.

Andrew Cuomo, has a popular last name also, is conveniently bathing in the accomplishments of his father, and is the ex-husband of a Kennedy; so there is a personal bias against any Kennedy.

LG   January 16th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

He'll probably pick Cuomo, his biggest rival in the next governor's race. Either way, Cuomo or Kennedy would be fine. Kennedy has taken a beating for not being qualified, but she is just as much as Clinton was...and Clinton did a great job.

empty people voted for an empty suit   January 16th, 2009 1:40 pm ET

Chelsea Clinton for Senator, it uh, uh, uh, uh makes the most sense.

Actually the "messiah" is putting heat on Paterson to pick Caroline "you know" Kennedy as payback for her being part and parcel to him being annointed President.

If Paterson doesn't, Ted "the swimmer" Kennedy is not going to be happy.

Don't worry though, it is in the bag, doesn't matter that she uh, uh, uh is a dolt, she can raise money and "you know" has a famous last name.

She and Obama can turn a simple conversation into a fillibuster with all of the uh, uh, uh, uh um, um, um's thrown in.

"But Bush can't speak either......................................... and they went to Hahvard so that makes them smaht...................."

Life-long Democrat   January 16th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

This stinks. It had not better be Kennedy. I now take more ownership of who represents us regardless of the state. I come from the State of Minnesota and it's apparent that those who represent other states can have a great affect on the country as a whole; that when Barney Frank heads the banking committee his negligence affects every tax payer. I do not want the senator from New York to be given a position because of his or her name with no experience to speak of. Especially if they support all of the long-standing senators that have been there, whether a democrat or republican, and have so neglected their responsibilities that the taxpayer is now looking a years of debt because they did not do their jobs. This has got to stop. I encourage all New Yorkers to let Governor Patterson know that you will only support someone that has the experience to do this job, i.e., to represent the taxpayer.

What is distrubing about Governers Paterson's comment is that his interest in this appointment appears to be solely related to popularity. Senator Clinton's replacement should be based on who is not only best suited for the job, but who can do the most for the people of New York. Governor Paterson is looking out for his own political future which should not be criteria for filling this important Senate seat.

Gov. Paterson says his job is not to pick the candidate who’s most popular at the moment, but rather, "the person who is going to be popular in 2010, when they run for re-election." Isn't his job actually to pick the most qualified person?
