(CNN) – Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy who was widely considered the frontrunner for an appointment to replace Hillary Clinton as U.S. senator from New York, has removed herself from consideration for that post, according to three Democratic sources.

so let me get this straight its not ok to appiont Caroline because of her last name but its ok to appiont Cumo because of his last name? If the gov were to choose Caroline it would be for many political reasons number 1 the money she can raise you need a lot of money to run in NY and she has the money. Second she supported obama and thus will have more capital in NY to get things done for the state which I would think would be important to NY but maybe am wrong. Third she is the only women who can replace Hillary if you think that a women seat should be fill by another women. But now she withdrew though msnbc is reporting something else I guess cumo will get it and in that case good luck NY you're going to need it.

Vic   January 22nd, 2009 12:48 am ET

I heard about 10 mins ago that CKennedy put out a statement that she had withdrawn. She wasn't ready for the job anyway and I thought Cuomo was the right choice. But I don't think it will be him. I think it will be Maloney.

Moe, NY   January 22nd, 2009 12:44 am ET

I hope she does not withdraw....she would be an excellent Senator for NY State....and, qualified too! I do not want to see another Cumo (sp?) again, the first one was not that good as far as I am concerned. Come on Gov. Paterson....appoint her, she would benefit NYS...and we in NY State need all the help we can get at this point in time.

Fred C Dobbs   January 22nd, 2009 12:33 am ET

Sue

Turn off David Gregory/MSNBC and trying watching a credible news source – say, anything else.

Sharon-NY   January 22nd, 2009 12:31 am ET

Caroline is totally puerile woman. If she respect Gov. Paterson's decision, she should wait humbly until he announce it.

Tony, Enterprise, Alabama   January 22nd, 2009 12:11 am ET

If this item were true it would be wonderful news.

However, there are conflicting reports on whether or not it is true.

Gov. Paterson should take this opportunity to close the book on any further consideration of Caroline Kennedy. In spite of her name, if appointed, she doesn't have a snowball's chance of keeping the seat. She is less informed than Palin (if that is possible), and doesn't even pretend to know whether or if she has voted in the last several elections.

Come on people, we don't owe her the time of day! This is NOT a Monarchy, it is a Republic! And she has earned exactly nothing!

Allen   January 22nd, 2009 12:06 am ET

I hope this rumor is, in fact, true. A small part of me feels bad for her, but she just got a very small taste of what happened to Sarah Palin. CK has to understand that a last name is NOT a job qualification.

Common Sense in CA   January 22nd, 2009 12:05 am ET

This has NOT been a good week for Kennedys. First Ted's going to the hospital, now Caroline's not going to Washington.

D   January 21st, 2009 11:55 pm ET

so with clinton's confirmation as SecState, I guess patterson privately gave kennedy the news that she wouldn't be named . . . so she bowed out "gracefully". no harm, no foul.

Tessa   January 21st, 2009 11:51 pm ET

It was quite interesting to watch the talking heads analyze this ad nauseum, only to report minutes later that it was confirmed that Caroline had not withdrawn her name. Yet another example of how the media relies on what "sources" tell them, and come up with egg on their faces.

Anonymous   January 21st, 2009 11:43 pm ET

Whew

jaye   January 21st, 2009 11:37 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy will be appointed Thursday.

Denise   January 21st, 2009 11:33 pm ET

Her uncle is ill and this was just maybe too much for her. He is the last of her family. She could be good in that seat once she found her feet. She has no trouble whatsoever heading up our greatest and best charties and her fathers library. And she knows politics very well. And knows the work and time it takes. She is one of the good Kennedy's.

JANICE   January 21st, 2009 11:33 pm ET

I'M glad she did this ,first i thought well she be ok,BUT WHEN THEY SAID SHE HAD NOT BEING VOTEING ! I WAS SO UP SET SHE IS A KENNEDY!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO SHE CAN'T VOTE OR CHOOSE NOT TO FOR WHAT EVER REASON! She don't to be in a senator's seat !!!!!!!!!!!!!

bankrupt USA   January 21st, 2009 11:19 pm ET

I guess only lifelong career politicians are qualified to be appointed.

Paul   January 21st, 2009 11:03 pm ET

Do everyone a favor, Caroline...make an appointment at a beauty
salon, another with your dentist and, definitely one with a doctor to
reposition your brains. You've been sitting on them too long. You
might want to ask Sarah Palin how she did it.

Say goodnight,goodnight   January 21st, 2009 11:02 pm ET

I just want to thank our special guest ann coulter for commenting here tonight, shes such an inspiration for the mentally challanged.

Bruce   January 21st, 2009 10:58 pm ET

She has pulled out, according to the New York Post, because she has found out that Governor Patterson is not going to appoint her.

How noble of her! How gracious to walk away after she's been shown the back door.

The Observer   January 21st, 2009 10:54 pm ET

She was only being considered because of the last name, anyone else with her lack of accomplishments would have immediately found their resume being tossed in the trashcan where it belonged in the first place

Cathy   January 21st, 2009 10:49 pm ET

I think she would have served the people of New York well.

tino   January 21st, 2009 10:48 pm ET

She thought she was entitled to it. How dare she think she can just walk in front of the line...she probably does it at the movies and DMV. She never had a job...money does strange things to some people,,,go back to the Hamptons and stay there with your snobbish , 0 intellect yuppie, up collar.penny loafer, sweater over the shoulder ,boreing, material , ivy league , narcisistic robots.

Mark   January 21st, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Thank goodness.... no more Kennedy's please.... our wonderful country can't take it.

Gary   January 21st, 2009 10:40 pm ET

It's about time she realized that the Gov. was not going to select her. Why do the Kennedy's think that they are so great in politics anyway?

shoe party   January 21st, 2009 10:35 pm ET

@Jen.Maybe you should read Coulters new book one more time and get some more talking points, if you arent actually Coulter. lol

pink sock   January 21st, 2009 10:26 pm ET

Sorry guys, this isn't really "news", is it?

curtis in WI   January 21st, 2009 10:24 pm ET

It sounds as if Gov. Paterson has called her and said he was giving it to someone else, so they put out this statement to allow her to save face.

Jim   January 21st, 2009 10:24 pm ET

She decided to get into public life on a whim. She probably thought about how inconvenient a 2 year committment would be. Can't a lady change her mind?

Angelino, CA   January 21st, 2009 10:15 pm ET

Wow! First, Bill Richardson. Now, Caroline Kennedy. Who's next? Should I hope for Dean Howard or Nancy Pelosi? I guess that 18 millions cracks are still cracking.....

Melissa B ~ ABCalifornia   January 21st, 2009 10:13 pm ET

Caroline Kennedy has endured enough grief in her life, and having to read the comments of rude low-ball malcontents is excuse enough for her to say forget it and goodbye.

Jayden,FL   January 21st, 2009 10:11 pm ET

There are conflicting reports about this story nothing is set! anyways I would much rather Andrew Cuomo as the Junior Senator from the state of New York

amused but happy in Vegas   January 21st, 2009 10:08 pm ET

This is CNN trying to make new, not report it.

CK may or may not be the best person for the job, but it is a shame that about 2 hours after this has been reported as inaccurate, CNN is still puching this.

question   January 21st, 2009 10:06 pm ET

well did she or didnt she.....cant anyone report the news..looks like a lot of people got egg on their face..... shame on the media....again

DAVE IN CA   January 21st, 2009 10:03 pm ET

I hope Caroline Kennedy will run for the senate. Let New Yorkers decide.

dr.mimi de la cruz   January 21st, 2009 9:57 pm ET

THERE IS PLENTY FOR HER TO DO.

SHE CAN START SMALL BY CONSISTENTLY VOTING.

indy 08   January 21st, 2009 9:54 pm ET

wrong headline, she is still in the hunt

Keith   January 21st, 2009 9:46 pm ET

I think she would be a great Senator. I am sorry to see her bow out, if that is the case. Perhaps she'll actually run in 2010.

m@   January 21st, 2009 9:45 pm ET

Why a shame? The woman clearly has a concern for her uncle's wellbeing and, furthermore, would pale in comparison to Senator Clinton's capabilities in the senate. I think she's doing the right thing here.

Jenn   January 21st, 2009 9:44 pm ET

uhhhhmmm THANK GOD, you know she finally realized you know that she has you know no business being in politics you know being as she is an idiot you know...

Caroline Kennedy for NYS Senate   January 21st, 2009 9:43 pm ET

Boy do I feel sheepish...

What a let-down!

Sue   January 21st, 2009 9:40 pm ET

Except she hasn't. David Gregory spoke to the family this evening, and she has not withdrawn.

Lee   January 21st, 2009 9:39 pm ET

She does not have the background to represent NY anyway. She was just going to get it because of who she was –

I say, I am um um glad she is out!

Emit R Detsaw   January 21st, 2009 9:36 pm ET

but then again, no she didn't......

remember when news agencies reported the NEWS?

martin   January 21st, 2009 9:36 pm ET

GOOD RIDDANCE. She bows out after she gets the feeling Paterson wasn't going to choose her anyway. She would do a horrible job and leave the seat open for a Republican in 2010 anyway with so little experience.

Plus, she would make Democrats look so hypocritical to bash Palin so much while this ditz gets appointed without much questioning of her qualifications.

I hate how she just says that she will work with President Obama to bring change when people ask her what she wants to do as Senator from New York.

Bill   January 21st, 2009 9:35 pm ET

What deal did she make to bow out? Is she getting a plum job on the President's staff so a minority could be appointed?

Soccer Nana   January 21st, 2009 9:27 pm ET

I heard this is a rumor.

chris@stl   January 21st, 2009 9:18 pm ET

.... she probably would have served unselfishly unlike other career politicians ...

Jason, Montreal QC   January 21st, 2009 9:05 pm ET

She has done the right thing..puts all the second guessing aside now.

StLouby   January 21st, 2009 9:04 pm ET

"Remove herself from consideration" what a polite way of saying the daughter of JFK got out before suffering the rejection of Patterson. America had 8 years of a dimwitted child of an ex president taking power for no other reason than a family name. Rep or Dem. Good riddance and don't come back!!!

Brian Williams   January 21st, 2009 9:03 pm ET

NPR just reported that NBC is reporting that it was incorrect and that Caroline Kennedy stated that it was a miscommunication between her and the governor.

Mike - Houston   January 21st, 2009 9:02 pm ET

FINALLY.

Angelino, CA   January 21st, 2009 9:02 pm ET

Wow, so the Clinton curse continues...... First, Bill Richardson. Now, Caroline Kennedy. Who's next? Should I hope for Dean Howard or Nancy Pelosi? I guess that 18 millions cracks are still cracking. Hahahaha.......

TjayeInLA   January 21st, 2009 8:57 pm ET

I like her, but she is just a more educated, unabrasive version of Palin. She's not ready either. But, she has a better chance of being ready than Palin.

Matt   January 21st, 2009 8:55 pm ET

Umm Uhh err uhh umm Thank God she dropped out this is not a country club for the celebrity ruling elite. you know.

Simmy   January 21st, 2009 8:55 pm ET

What a shame! She probably sensed that Gov. Patterson doesn't have the courage to appoint her. He is bowing to political pressure from Cuomo's cronies, and or PUMA (ex-Clinton supporters gone rogue).

JOE KILOZ   January 21st, 2009 8:47 pm ET

SWEETIE,,,,,,,,,,,YOU'RE,,,,,,,,,,,,,NO,,,,,,,,,,,,,JOHN,,,,,,,,,,,KENNEDY

Gina   January 21st, 2009 8:47 pm ET

Sorry, Caroline. Your first 9-5 job won't be a state senator.

jane   January 21st, 2009 8:44 pm ET

Given Ms. Kennedy's decision to support Senator Clinton's oppostion during the primaries, she would have been the wrong choice to be given the Senator's seat.

John in VA   January 21st, 2009 8:39 pm ET

Good – she had no business going for it anyway. Nominate Byron Brown!

Mike, Syracuse NY   January 21st, 2009 8:39 pm ET

Thank God. Maybe we'll actually get someone qualified. You know, you know?

jon   January 21st, 2009 8:37 pm ET

Um, You Know!

Robert in New Mexico   January 21st, 2009 8:36 pm ET

HA! She says she is taking her name out of the running due to Ted's poor health yet he has had poor health for months now.. I smell a cover up.. The NY Gov probably told her in private she wouldn't get the job and she wants to save Kennedy face by instead making it look like she is pulling out. Just goes to show she was never right for the job in the first place.

MartaK   January 21st, 2009 8:36 pm ET

Just as well. She really wasn't qualified when compared to some other potential candidates who had already paid their dues and been in the trenches just waiting for their turn at a Senate seat. If she really wants to be a Senator, she can use her time now to pay her dues and get the requisite experience under her belt.

Fred C Dobbs   January 21st, 2009 8:33 pm ET

Widely considered by the media but not the governor of New York as the front runner.

Sources in the news now say that this is a face saving move on the part of Caroline Kennedy.

She whould have been better served by friends and family to have been told days ago that she was lacking in ability.

Ron M   January 21st, 2009 8:28 pm ET

It's a sad day for New York. We're sorry not to see Ms. Kennedy as our next Senator.

Alex   January 21st, 2009 8:26 pm ET

Read: Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy (who was widely considered the frontrunner for an appointment to replace Hillary Clinton as U.S. senator from New York by the irresponsible 24-hour cable news networks and other vapid media outlets) was told that NY Gov. David Paterson is in no way interested in appointing her as Princess of the State of NY. Paterson's office alerted Kennedy's handlers in advance of the announcement of the actual Senatorial appointment so that the talentless heiress could claim to have withdrawn her appeal, rather than promoting the public perception that there was indeed someone more talented and deserving of the post than a Kennedy. Paterson's re-election campaign has been bolstered by generous donations totaling $500,000, most traced to residents of Hyannisport, MA.

Larry   January 21st, 2009 8:24 pm ET

I think somebody here is trying to save face, front runner??

Feral Phoenician   January 21st, 2009 8:24 pm ET

Could it be because she wanted to save face when the NY Gov announced he DIDNT choose her? Just sayin, ya know.

Mike   January 21st, 2009 8:23 pm ET

I believe that this is a wise decision on the Caroline Kennedy's part. I am certain that she is a fine intellegent woman just no the right person at the right time.I believe that Brian Higgins would be that person.

JB   January 21st, 2009 8:22 pm ET

Translation: Governor Paterson called her and said "you're not my pick, I'm sorry"

jp,michigan   January 21st, 2009 8:22 pm ET

It takes more then just a name to become a senator. I guess she finally realized it.

fifi   January 21st, 2009 8:18 pm ET

I am glad...she was not qualified....

jonathan   January 21st, 2009 8:17 pm ET

Too Bad.

And for those that argue her lack of experience, remember, A LOT of people with decades of experience just left their offices at the White House for Good.
Further explanation not necessary.

rickymo   January 21st, 2009 8:17 pm ET

I think she is great and would have made a good Senator but this looks like she wasn't going to get it so she bowed out as opposed to having to lose. While she may be concerned about her Uncle every Kennedy has more money than they need and could buy Teddy is own hospital. Silly...

Randolph   January 21st, 2009 8:15 pm ET

I really feel sorry for her. Clinton's people, including Governor Paterson, hate her and wouldn't forgive her for have supported President Obama.
It is sad to see people who supported President Obama being destroyed by Clinton's people in Obama's watch.
I hope President Obama would do something for her. Meanwhile, she can prepare herself for 2010. She will win.

Scott   January 21st, 2009 8:12 pm ET

Pick Carolyn Maloney!!

Benn   January 21st, 2009 8:12 pm ET

OMG. Either she can't take the coming heat or she came to her senses. Good for her either way for knowing when to throw the towel in.

raquel   January 21st, 2009 8:11 pm ET

The chinese have a saying for Caroline Kennedys 'withdrawal', its called saving face.

Ryan Seattle   January 21st, 2009 8:10 pm ET

Now I want to hear from everyone who said the media didn't treat Kennedy the same way as Palin. They both ended up in the same place. What happened to the "liberal" media you all claim exists.

Ula Nejad Sacramento, Ca   January 21st, 2009 8:06 pm ET

She is too much of a lady to even get caught in a nasty situation. It would have been better maybe just one of her children or grandchildren run for the presidency one day. Sometimes adults can be shortsighted of the many alternatives to keep their legacy alive.

Texas Teacher   January 21st, 2009 8:06 pm ET

I can understand her concern for her Uncle Teddy. He is the closest she has to her father and Uncle Bobby. I hope that this rumor is wrong! Caroline would make an excellent Senator to fill the post of Hillary!

S Callahan   January 21st, 2009 8:04 pm ET

You did what you had to do Caroline. Should you choose to run for Govenour or Senator in the future....give me a call...I'll help.

So who's next? K. Gillabrand or Coumo?

Mary   January 21st, 2009 8:02 pm ET

You know, this is, you know, kinda unexpected, you know.

Andy J, Upstate NY   January 21st, 2009 8:02 pm ET

Yeah, thats right.

Carolyn, perhaps you had good intentions, but you had no business putting your name out there as a potential candidate anyway.

Thanks for taking your name out of the running, WE NEVER WANTED YOU ANYWAY.

see ya.

bmkwilson   January 21st, 2009 8:01 pm ET

Too bad. Caroline is intelligent, creative, and would have made a good US Senator.

Justin from New Haven, CT   January 21st, 2009 8:00 pm ET

Huge win for New Yorkers.

Take Cuomo out of the Governor's Race   January 21st, 2009 7:59 pm ET

One might conclude that she has quietly been informed that she is not Governor Paterson's choice and this is an attempt to save face.

With Clinton having now resigned her Senate seat, Paterson is likely to act quickly.

BluesBrother   January 21st, 2009 7:57 pm ET

Very sorry to see you pull out Caroline, I believe you would have done a wonderful job. We need honesty and integrity above experience.

chelsea   January 21st, 2009 7:56 pm ET

wow....isnt this shocking? she just waited till the last minute.
what's the point? Gov Paterson was going to announce a new senator this weekend, maybe she felt or even knows that she won't be appointed.how sad, i think that she should never have opted to replace hillary clinton in the senate since she has never run for public office. but, if she really wants to be a politician, she had better get to talking to the people of new york as 2010 approaches.

Stella   January 21st, 2009 7:56 pm ET

That was the smart thing to do from the beginning and her interviews she did not confidence and just because you are a Kennedy that doesn't qualify you to run.

Richard   January 21st, 2009 7:55 pm ET

Good!

John in Montreal   January 21st, 2009 7:54 pm ET

An honorable thing for her to do & keep a good name for herself.

Ricci   January 21st, 2009 7:49 pm ET

Ha! Good cuz she knew she wasn't getting it.

Pamma   January 21st, 2009 7:49 pm ET

GOOD!!!!!

R   January 21st, 2009 7:49 pm ET

She was not going to get it. This is the reason she withdraw. Better withdraw fast before looking like a loser. She would not withdraw from her post if she was already elected.
