ALBANY, New York (CNN) - New York Gov. David Paterson appointed Rep. Kirsten Gillibrand to fill Hillary Clinton's vacant U.S. Senate seat Friday.

Gillibrand, 42, was elected to her second term in the House of Representatives in November.

It's ironic that the forerunner prior to Princess Caroline's dictate that she should be the one, was the chosen one. Gillibrand had been mentioned as a favorite successor by Hillary, in order to keep a female in office that was adept. Princess Caroline appeared to be suffering under the Blagdovidch scadal of pay to play. Princess Caroline supported Obama and then wanted some reward. This makes her support look more legitimate than if she as a non-representative got a position. I find it completely hypocritical that those that say Sarah Palin, who actually ran for office more than once, and have people say that she had no experience thought that Princess Caroline had more experience in politics. Sarah Palin for all her inexperience with the press, which has proven to be no less pitiful than Princess Caroline's press experience, has been a leader, while Princess Caroline has been able to do things from a "legacy", big difference, when you have to earn the right to lead, versus expect it.

Dan, TX   January 23rd, 2009 3:02 pm ET

Since people are split between saying it is a great choice and a terrible choice, that must mean it is a very good choice.

Bill Traywick Jr   January 23rd, 2009 2:56 pm ET

This woman is a monster.

notevenfordogcatcher   January 23rd, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Polar bears against Palen,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, It is Palin genius.

THIS is a GREAT selection, my kind of politician, does not live by some dogmatic preset views set-forth by NOW and other "womens groups".

Each individual issue is not what as a Liberal should I do or think or a Conservative, NO WAY, each issue is about right or wrong or a good idea or a bad one and we need more MODERATE thinking in this country.

Caroline "You know" Kennedy would have been a liberal yes person for whatever was presented, pretty much a Kennedy dish-rag.

J. Huck   January 23rd, 2009 2:31 pm ET

Bad choice, how can you be a democrat in an ultra conservative district. Gain one more seat for republicans in the senate and the house of rep. Unfortunately for both Gillibrand and Patterson, they won't win re-election.

Jackman   January 23rd, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Glad to see politics and Al D'Amato had nothing to do with the pick. Hey wait, isn't that Al on the podium??

AndyL   January 23rd, 2009 2:29 pm ET

Stands to reason, Blagojevich picked a black candidate to replace black candidate and Patterson picked an upstate hill-billy to replace an Arkansas hill-billy.

Andy J, Upstate NY   January 23rd, 2009 2:10 pm ET

Whats wrong with fiscal conservative who supports individual rights, especially the 2nd amendment?

nothing.

Good luck, Kirsten. You have my support, don't let us down.

Caroline Kennedy for NYS Senate   January 23rd, 2009 2:01 pm ET

This also leaves the door wide open for 2010. Horrible choice Gov Paterson.

Its a repub.   January 23rd, 2009 1:48 pm ET

I hope you loose that seat in 2010 for such a choice its here comes the NRA

Nan   January 23rd, 2009 1:44 pm ET

Gov. Paterson dissed the majority of the voters. It was they who elected Hilary.

Maggie in NY   January 23rd, 2009 1:42 pm ET

Now we finally have representation for Upstate NY in the US Senate. Congratulations, (soon-to-be) Senator Gillibrand!

Kana   January 23rd, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Kirsten Gillibrand wouldn't have been my 1st choice. however being from and representing upstate New York's 20th Congressional District, maybe she can draw some favortism away from NYC and benefit the upstate tax payers for a change.

sharon   January 23rd, 2009 1:37 pm ET

Good choice! No, great choice! I support Paterson all the way. He has done a great job! I am a NY voter and will vote Paterson!

Paul   January 23rd, 2009 1:32 pm ET

Well, better than her ultra liberal predecessor, but if she is honest she may be ok.

oh no   January 23rd, 2009 1:30 pm ET

John, Brooklyn, New York-

Excellent question..., that's where I think the Governor made his mistake, the majority of the voters reside in the City.. and although his pick may be the most qaulified for the position... I don't see people living in the city limits (majority of the voters) relating to this candidate when it's time for re-election...

joan hutton   January 23rd, 2009 1:13 pm ET

to help make more jobs, have you thought about how building a decent railroad system, that connects from small town to small town,
and across the country, would certainly reduce the unemployement
and inhance the the country at the same time, in this day and age we can
afford a smore free atmosphere....
Thanks

Good for Him. I really wanted him name someone unique not known names or expected names.
This is America and it will remain rightfully so!

Rich   January 23rd, 2009 1:08 pm ET

Why was former GOP senator Al D'Amato front and center in the supportive crowd right behind senator Gillibrand???

An American   January 23rd, 2009 1:03 pm ET

I do not know anything about the Govenor's choice, but his not choosing Kennedy was the right decision. Good for him.

Dave   January 23rd, 2009 1:02 pm ET

A great choice made by Gov. Paterson. This should've been it even if kennedy remained in running. Of course her "personal reasons" caused her to remove herself from consideration. Let me break it down for you....she ran the most inept campaign to be named, was a lousy public speaker, and showed extremely limited political savvy. It all equated to the public turning on her and the Governor shouldn't have even considered her anyway.

sueinpennsylvania   January 23rd, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Hey Palin supporters, get a life!!!! The election is over, Obama won, deal with it. I don't think McCain could of won no matter who he picked for running mate. Palin was and is a big mistake. For goodness sake, she has a degree in journalism and specializes in beauty pageants. Conservatives like to say people voted for Obama because he was black. Well how many people voted for Palin just because she was a women. (Or just because she was pro-life)The people in my area are so backwards in their thinking. The will vote based on only one or 2 things. Either gun control or abortion. Gee that is a great thing to determine when it comes to who you will vote for for president. Social neo-nitwits, get real. Abortion will always be legal and the government will not take away all our guns. While abortion is not a great thing, Roe V Wade will never ever br reversed. If it hasn't been overturned in 36 years, it's not gonna happen now.
If GOP is smart, they will tell Palin to disappear.

Island girl   January 23rd, 2009 12:55 pm ET

United we stand – divided we fall!

Suzanne, Lake Placid   January 23rd, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Good pick. Patterson has earned my respect (and perhaps my vote in 2010). Although we disagree on some things, he's shown himself to be pragmatic; less concerned with ideology and more concerned with getting things done. I'm still not on board with raising some taxes, but at least he grasps the concept of lowering deficits. I wish more Democrats would get that, lol. :-)

John, Brooklyn, New York   January 23rd, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Huge mistake. Paterson is trying to pander to upstate voters when, in fact, there hasn't been an upstate candidate who has been viable for a major statewide office in New York in the past 50 years! Senator Goodell (from Jamestown) was appointed in 1968, but was defeated in 70. The real question should be "Can an upstate candidate sufficiently appeal to New York City?"

Sean Chong   January 23rd, 2009 12:48 pm ET

The truth is the Governor doesn't want to offend the Kennedy's and someone persuaded Caroline to drop out.... finally, he has the guts to appoint her.

Polar Bears Against Palen   January 23rd, 2009 12:44 pm ET

Terrible choice. This woman is conservative Democrat. And, people say Paterson is beoming more conservative since becoming governor. Another shot in the foot by silly democrats. Good chance Republican Peter King will take the seat in 2010.

Fred C Dobbs   January 23rd, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Excellent choice.

A strong conservative Democrat who can win in 2010.

Anyone out there care to compare Gillibrand to Kennedy – I thought not.

Disgusting to even see CNN mentioning both of them in the same sentence. I believe that we have now heard enough of Caroline Kennedy. Whoever convinced her that she was Senate material should receive a swift kick.

Canuck   January 23rd, 2009 12:42 pm ET

i guess he didn't see Caroline's problems coming.

aware   January 23rd, 2009 12:40 pm ET

I hope she does a good job. She is a conservative democrat (w/e that means). Anyway they should put out more information about her.

Jason   January 23rd, 2009 12:40 pm ET

This governor made a charade of the this whole process and it's disgusting. Just pick a replacement and move on, don't drag it out for months.

No you didn't   January 23rd, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Apparently the governor never saw this coming...

Chris from NY   January 23rd, 2009 12:37 pm ET

I am not going to vote for her anyway.

Bravo, NY!   January 23rd, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Congratulations NY on your new US senator.

A conservative democrat to boot. Liberals eat your hearts out! I just wish all elected leaders were centrists.

Radical liberal nutjobs and radical conservative idiots need to go!! The majority of people in this country hold moderate views.

Be an American, not a democrat or republican.

Moderates Unite!   January 23rd, 2009 12:34 pm ET

Good choice….as a Blue Dog Dem she can put an end to the ultra-liberal tyranny begat by her predecessor

Maddie   January 23rd, 2009 12:34 pm ET

I'm glad his 15 minutes of fame are over.

proudliberal-independent   January 23rd, 2009 12:33 pm ET

oh, great. another republican in democratic clothing. these people claim to be democrats, but, there isn't a liberal or progressive bone in their bodies. same kinda people that threw Carter under the bus, because they were enthralled with the 'actor' ,who is ultimately responsible for the failed, 'trickle-down' policies and de-regulation that put us in this fine position we're in.

Say goodnight   January 23rd, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Big money trail here folks. She represents the old money corridor all the way to the great lakes. The filthy rich live in this stretch of gerry mandered land.

Bad Idea   January 23rd, 2009 12:29 pm ET

I hope Kirsten fails–Rush.

BB   January 23rd, 2009 12:28 pm ET

Another token – hopefully she will be honest.
