Senator accuses Pres. Obama of 'environmental thuggery'

Sen. Inhofe, foreground, spoke out Monday about the president's latest executive order.

(CNN) - Sen. James Inhofe called President Barack Obama’s plan to allow 14 states to regulate their own fuel emission standards “environmental thuggery” in an interview published Monday.

Obama’s executive order seeks to reduce greenhouse gases by allowing states like California to require stricter fuel standards for cars.

The Oklahoma senator a ranking member of the Senate Environmental and Public Works Committee and a longtime global warming skeptic, told CNN Monday the proposed plan would too costly for the beleaguered auto industry. “I think you’re going to see them coming in requesting more bailouts now as a result of this,” said Inhofe.

Wow....thuggery. Poor Senator Imhofe has already forgotten suppression of all the enviro data supporting the Obama team position (that was repeatedly suppressed by the Republican Presidency over the last 8 years).

I struggle to see how allowing states to create the own standard is "thuggery". Wouldn't the OPPOSITE be more like thuggery. And isn't allowing states rights more "republican" (by definition).

Senator Inhofe probably has a lot more to say. I sure hope so because what I read of Senator Inhofe's position is nonsense on so many levels...

I love all the economists that are posting comments.
Oh wait... none of you are.

Having 14 different standards is insane and NO auto manufacturer could satisfy that many standards.
There is a reason why the CAFE standard is a federal one.
It allows the auto makers to build to a single standard.
That same car can then be sold ANYWHERE in the US.
What happens if you buy a car in one state with a lower standard than another and then wish to move there? Are you going to be forced to pay to upgrade your car or will the state government force you to sell your car all together?

It needs to be a national standard, not one regulated by the states.

Senator Inhofe–please enlighten us with your brilliance and explain how you know better than thousands of environmental researchers from all over the world. If not, shut up.

Is this a rascist remark or what? Thuggery? How in the h_ll did he not recognize Cheney, Bush, Rove, Gonzales and his friends at Halliburton and Enron as being thuggery?

This is the kind of incredible ignorance that got us in trouble in the first place. It is also why these lamebrain Republicans are becoming a dying breed. Thank god! Give the South back to the confederacy already!!!

The US Auto Industry should've seen t his coming years ago. They could've engineered more fuel efficient cars but instead they choose to lobby for government support on their crappy products. If they spent more time in R&D then they wouldn't be failing now.

This guy is probably up hunting Polar Bears with Sarah Palin.

For a party who is so dead set on fighting Terrorism, don't you think building cars that would be more efficient, and thus pump less money into countries that support them, would be a priority? Pretty short-sighted, if you ask me.

    Dear Hammer,

You are so right....Why should we be held to a higher standard? We have been reduced to a third world country over the last 8 years let us stay that way!

This additional burden (can be 14 different versions) will cause serious havoc on the automakers above and beyond what thy are going through right now! Somebody said it will give customers what they want! Wrong! Customers have nothing to do this. This is political and only political!!!

Whatever. He probably thinks evolution isn't real either.

Many of the executive orders Obama has issued in this first week have been ones that reversed executive orders issued by the GOP's prescious Bushtard. It has nothing to do with him thinking himself a king...it has everything to do with him thinking in a responsible and thoughtful manner.

Oh please.. This is not a priority. Now the car industry will have more regulations. They are bankrupt now. We should wait until this economic mess is on the road to recovery. Obama just wants to make headlines with nonsense.

Inholfe is the same nut who made baseless and FALSE accusations about Anderson Cooper some time ago. It was a racist remark (the 'thuggery' aspect).

Listen people, the Senator is right. If Obama want to set the standard, then set the standard at the federal level and don't let the states decide. Obama does not want to make that tough decision so when issues arise he can blame the governors. You think the auto industry is in trouble now, just wait. I'll also be sitting back and waiting when this affects you in the future. Buy a car in one state and you can drive it in another becasue your emissions don't meet standards.

Amazing that the Republicans have departed so far from their modern roots, including signing endangered species and clean air and water legislation plus standing up for states rights, that Democrats have had to step in to make these ideals viable. What the heck has happened to the Republican party?

“I think you’re going to see them coming in requesting more bailouts now as a result of this,” said Inhofe.

Yeah, well why do you think they asked for one in the first place? They knew what was coming.
