'Americans are not your enemy,' Obama tells Muslims

Obama spoke with Al-Arabiya yesterday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – President Obama said his administration will offer a hand of friendship to the Muslim world, but will hunt down terrorist organizations that kill innocent civilians.

"My job to the Muslim world is to communicate that the Americans are not your enemy," Obama said in an interview with the Al-Arabiya satellite television network. "We sometimes make mistakes. We have not been perfect."

In his run for the White House, Obama pledged to improve ties with the Muslim world, draw down U.S. troops in Iraq and close the Guantanamo Bay detention camp. The president has also pledged to address the Muslim world from a Muslim capital in the first 100 days of his administration. No location has been announced.

This is a message for jb in wv, who commented on another story:

You asked for forgiveness from your fellow Americans for voting for Obama, because you already see what a mistake that was. Let me be the first to say, You Are Forgiven!!!! And welcome back to the fold of right thinking. God bless you.

Christ also said to "love your enemy".

If you are going to quote the words of Christ – at lest have an inkling of what he meant.

I can't believe he is moving so quickly on the Middle East. Very proactive and courageous. I think Obama has done more in a couple of days than Bush did in a couple of years! As thrilled as I am to see Obama's leadership, I can't help but think what a disaster we would be in if McCain and Palin had won. I really liked McCain, but he is more yesteryear. He just wasn't the choice for today's America and today's problems.

Norman, the fact you call it treason for Obama to tell the world that we are not their enemy just shows how twisted your brain has become from years of believing the lies of the Bush administration.

This approach will save more American lives, and protect more American interests, than all the wars and crusades we can deliver.

By the time Obama leaves office, he will be known throughout the world as the greatest American president of the modern era.

If your house had been destroyed by an invading army and your neighbors had been killed, you would be proud to send your son to fight for freedom and justice. Why won't you allow people of different creeds and colors the same emotions as you have?

I am a Muslim (white American convert) and it was wonderful to hear President Obama speak those words. We have lived in fear of retribution since 9/11. Millions of us live here in the US, both convert and immigrants, and the children of converts and immigrants, and all we want is what you want–the right to live peacefully and raise our families.

Just reading these web forums, one can understand why they hate us– we hate them. It's vicious cycle, and Obama's trying to break the cycle. Will it work? Probably not, but it shows he cares.

Obama is speaking as much to Americans as he's speaking to the Muslim world. He's trying to tell Americans not to hate Muslims that only want to live in peace. He's trying to break down the fear at home as well as abroad. The hate stirring on our own soil against Muslims is only fueling the hate toward us.

And please, educated Christians should know that Christians and Muslims bow to the same God. "God" in the Arab-language Bible translates at "Allah". Go pick one up.

One commenter is right: you catch more flies with honey. Let's be allies in the fight against terror.
