(CNN) – Republican Senator Jim Bunning declared emphatically Tuesday that he is running for re-election in 2010, despite his cash-poor war chest and reports that some Republicans want him to step aside.
On a conference call with local reporters in Kentucky, Bunning also expressed frustration with fellow Kentuckian, Sen. Mitch McConnell, who said last week he wasn’t sure what Bunning’s intentions are for the upcoming cycle.
“He either had a lapse of memory or something when speaking to the Press Club last week when he said that he didn't know what my intentions were,” Bunning said of the Senate Minority Leader, according to the Louisville Courier-Journal. “He knew very well what my intentions were.”
Bunning suggested McConnell wasn’t being truthful.
“I had an hour-long meeting with Sen. McConnell in the first week of December in 2008, and we thoroughly discussed my candidacy for the Senate in that hour meeting in my office in Northern Kentucky, and gave him every indication that I was going to run again,” Bunning said on the call.
Bunning, the 77-year old former baseball player, already has at least one challenger for the seat: Kentucky Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo, who nearly unseated Bunning in 2004. Other state Democrats are mulling whether to jump in the race.
I see him pitching stones in a stream soon,
It is a sad thing to watch a party slowly disintegrate from the inside out... and yet for some reason i seem to get so much pleasure from it i guess I now should join the growing crowds of
ONCE AGAIN REPUBLICANS ARE TONE DEAF & CLUELESS!!
Gracie.........get away from the computer and go back to playing with your crayons.
He has some nerve commenting on someone else's memory.
Bunning...another old-style Republican obstructionist who is going down in 2010. Even McConnell doesn't like him. We need a mandatory retirement age and term limits so that the U.S. Senate will no longer be the World's Most Expensive Taxpayer-Funded Nursing Home. Give someone else a chance to serve.
"Bunning suggested McConnell wasn’t being truthful"
That sounds like : His OWN people are Against him, doesn't it ?
Of course, Kentucky is mostly Republican, anyway.
You have no Chance!... Steal from your Kids... You steal from the Future...
Well this isn't really a symptom of the Republicans disintegrating. Everyone in Kentucky and inside the beltway has been aware of Jim Bunning's decaying mental state for quite some time. He barely won re-election in 2004 and that was a Republican peak year.
As a not so wise man once said..., "bring 'em on". It'll be extremely gratifying to see another Republican bite the dust.
McConnell's comments shouldn't be seen as dishonest. It's likely that he was simply deferring any announcement to Bunning. That kind of lash-out at a reasonable, qualified leader does not bode well for Bunning.
I think maybe Bunning and McConnell both should look into retirement. They have both outlived their usefulness (and ideas) in our Government. Time's up guys --- see ya'
republicans are over, the same people that love rush limbaugh, palin, and fox news support these anti- American people.
Quit Senator Bunning, don't you get it you are not wanted by your fellow Republicans. I too get pleasure from seeing them disintegrate, I guess it is because they did so much harm to this country while they were in power.
Is he still known as "Buckles" Bunning, particularly in Baltimore?
God I hope he runs... Mongiarido will run the table! Bunning won by a razor thin margin last election and is WAY worse shape this time around.
Ah yes, "buckles " will run again – AND LOSE!
I almost feel sorry for them...almost. Sitting here in MN watching Coleman dissolve into desperation is pretty amusing too
Hes living proof that term limits are needed. Can the truth be posted Peter?
77 years old and ANOTHER Bush era Republican hold out. GO HOME. Set the bucket down. Even your own party/Mitchell do NOT want you any where near Washington. What is your problem? Don't you have any hobbies or a life away from work. Can't you take a hint? No one wants you back. . You are NOT wanted; by anyone with common sense, Republican or Democrat. You have become quite useless. Fade away..QUICKLY!
I can't wait to vote against him.
THREE STRIKES AND YOU'RE OUT!
Bunning stands up against socialism. No wonder the left hates this guy.
