Obama speaks with reporters about his meeting with house Republicans.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - In the first real test of bipartisanship for his new administration, President Barack Obama met with Republican representatives on Capitol Hill Tuesday to discuss his proposed $825 billion economic stimulus plan.

"We had a wonderful exchange of ideas, and I continue to be optimistic about our ability to get this recovery package done to put people back to work," Obama said after leaving a meeting with GOP House members.

"There are some legitimate philosophical differences" between Democrats and Republicans on how to stimulate the economy, Obama noted, "and I respect that."

"I don't expect 100 percent agreement," he added. "But I hope we can put politics aside."

Obama is meeting with Republican senators this afternoon.

Larry Houston TX, You liberals are amusing! You tell us conservatives to get over the fact that "you won, we lost", but you cannot get over Bush? Double standard! Absolutely! You seem to forget that for the last 2 years your idols have been in control and it has been about 2 years the economy started to sink! Not fully the libs fault, not fully Bush's fault! In the liberal grand plan to fix this, I ask the following: Why is birth control pills and condoms apart of this stimulus plan? Why isn't there any accounting the billions already spent? Why are we funding the arts with this (I couldn't care less)? Why is Pelosi advocating abortions domestically to save government spending? Why is the President advocating spending government money for abortions internationally? Where is job creation in this foolishness? Stop worshipping at the presidental alter! I read where you asked ken to go back to Fox where he belongs. I don't know about him but, Ii like it here just fine!
Tom in PA, the GOP has lost it's conservative soul. I agree with you!

if you are laid off, then you need to quickly sold your house and rent an apt! That's the life. A lot of people doesn't have a house, you lost your job, blame it on yourself ( you are not competitive enough) . You are not capable to keep a house, why should you keep it?

First of all will everyone please give President Obama respect and address him as President. Secondly, it is amazing how we got in this hell hole and now the commentators and everyone else is an expert on how to get us out. The republicans were not concerned about the debt of their " children " when they were spending like crazy !!!!! the last eight years. Ignorance can not be conquered overnight. It takes time ! How many of you have a PHD in Economics!!! NONE

Survivor   January 27th, 2009 6:39 pm ET

The way I see it is that Obama is trying his very best to deal with the situation and including everyone – their ideas, their concerns, & their support....however, it continues to come off as nothing but Politics as usual (& Self Self Self)--The house is burning and everyone is just spitting at the fire & not acutually calling the fire department to put out the blaze...so if it burns down just look to yourselves.....the country is going down – either very quickly or slowly and painfully for a long time.

That quote was made before their meeting with the President: apparently they all plan to sit there with their fingers in their ears and hum... refusing to listen.

Do the Republicans ever use their own judgment, to think, to do the research, to decide????

Do they ever offer independent suggestions just blindly follow their foolish, but tanned, leadership into the slimy swamp?

Do partisan Republicans ever put the good of the country ahead of the good of the country? It never seems so ... especially after the sample we've had the last 8 years'

Watch it folks. The republicans are setting up their plans for failure and then blame the dems. They are voting based on the next election when the country is in trouble. So sad for all of us.

if the republicans would just listen with a open ear,, they would understand that this is for the good of the people, and if they have to take a cut in pay,, so be it,,, americans have suffered enough,,, its time for then to shut up and listen,, and understand the expense to common americans,,,,,, if they care at all,, what if they lost thier job(with out any pay),, they would think twice,,,,,,,, get em,,,, ( where it hurts)

Trickle down does not and has not worked. Look at the mess we are in, by letting the Fat Cats at the top take our money to invest and then run with it? There needs to be more for the bottom in this bill and none for the top. Period! Didn't they get enough? Are they not still taking from U.S.? For example the plane Citi was going to buy? I hear they are not going through with it now.Yeah, one point for U.S. We need more for the bottom (U.S.) 60% and the rest for Governor's of every State. They can put peolpe back to work on jobs that will grow and invest in our future. No more bridges to nowhere. We need roads with bridges that will carry us into tomorrow. The banks and wall street can go you know where until they get responsible people to run their corporations to replace the Fat Cats at the top. Time for another big tea party sponsored by the taxpayers of this great country.

garin   January 27th, 2009 5:40 pm ET

OK, so you have raised your flimsy objections, dear GOPs. What's you next move? Plan a strategy to resist all the reforms by the new administration, perhaps, eh? C'mon, you can do a lot better than that.

thanks, but no thanks   January 27th, 2009 5:37 pm ET

Just think for a second. Both sides working together. Killing babies, liberal agenda are just smoke screens to prevent from helping blue collar workers. Everyone is working harder and getting paid less and less. Work is not appreciated anymore. Bank and wall street executives who bet on money get rewarded. l totally feel for the person who got laid off on Monday, yet it seems that Republicans in Congress are immune to it. Maybe they would like to be super minority in 2010. It has a cool sound to it. Keep on drinking your cool aid Repugs. Soon you will be looking for a job...

I am an independent who has analyzed the effect of tax policy on the economy over the last 30 years and truthfully there is none. Tax cuts have always increased the deficit and the Clinton tax increase generated 2 years of surpluses. I am disheartened by the fact that Republicans are no longer fiscal conservatives. I would love to ask John Boehmer these 3 questions.
1.) If a tax cut meant an extra $1,000 for you, how would it effect your lifestyle?
2.)Would the tax cut change your decision to purchase anything?
3.) How would it stimulate the economy?

I think it is time to start keeping a list of those who wish only to obstruct the President at the expense of the American people. These jokers, whichever side of the aisle they are on, need to go.

Independent_me   January 27th, 2009 5:09 pm ET

The Republicans, instead of using the second chance that Obama is giving them to redeem themselves, is abusing his generousity. He is trying to include them but they want everything THEIR way. They think that they have him between a rock and a hard place because if he doesn't give them everything that they want, they can say that he is talking inclusiveness, not not doing what THEY want in order to be inclusive.

They are evil. That is why they will lose even more votes in the next two years. They did nothing under Bush, except blame Clinton. Now they just want everybody to forget sabout the Bush years and do what THEY want Obama to do. They STILL want to give everything to big business, whie pretending to care about small businesses. We are not fooled! They are obstructionists!

What the government needs to do is to give each head of household with incomes under $150,000 $25,000 each. THAT will pump up the economy with demand for goods and services!

Republicans have no credibility on any issue anymore. I love how they blame the Democrats for the two years, when the economic situation is the result of their FLAWED economic philosophy. republicans can't think anything besides tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts. They haven't had a new idea in 30 years. They are so pathetic and the comments on here just reinforce it. Look at how many still try to claim PRESIDENT Obama is not a citizen.

Tim   January 27th, 2009 4:59 pm ET

I read where people are blaming the Democrat controlled Congress for the past 2 years mess . It is the President who has the last word by signing bills into law . People need to go back and study how our Government is set up . It's called Separation of Power .. U.S. Government 101 ..

Streamwood Bill   January 27th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

The Republicans didn't get it in 1933 and they still don't get it in 2009.

The country is hurting and needs help. It needs bold action, not the platitudes and obstructionist tactics of the past.

If GOP lawmakers keep up their partisan ways; the electorate will make the 2008 election seem like the "good ole days" for Republican candidates in 2010.

Here's some food for thought as we all wait for more money to be spent foolishly. The government could have given every man, woman, and child in the US a million dollars each and it would have cost less and been far more effective than any previous or future baliout would and will have.

tlou   January 27th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

What for? He doesn't need them in the House and only needs 2 in the Senate. This is simply postering so he can say "I'm reaching across the ailse". If the plan was so good, the Dems would push it through. They are looking to attached Reps so that when it fails they can blame them.

Billie Amerson   January 27th, 2009 4:42 pm ET

I am a republican, and I always will be. The nasty cracks from democrats only prove my point as to why I am republican. You, Obama, will never have my support because I can see through you, that you plan to dismantle this country and change us to the level of your Kenyan home.

Jim   January 27th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

This bill will only further the economic down turn. We need jobs back into this country, and this bill will not do it. We need manufacturing jobs, not road maintenance, and if the e-verify is taken out, we will only be adding more illegal immigrants to the worker role. Anyone going thru a construction zone can tell you that.

Lets get real. To move this country back to it's roots, we will have to re-introduce the industrial side of this country. 350B has already been lost. No accountability. Another 350B is in the works and this will be lost as well. Then there is another 825B. When does it stop. My grandkids will be paying for this years to come.

We need a plan in place to put money back into the economy immediately. Not in 3 or 4 years. To those of you who have recently been laid off. I was laid off in 03. At my age, finding a job has been impossible, so I ended up opening my own company. Worked well for 2 years, but now I am in the same shape you are.

cnnnewser   January 27th, 2009 4:41 pm ET

Ken   January 27th, 2009 4:35 pm ET

You liberals that support Obama and his stimulus package are crazy. The do-nothing democrat run congress has failed miserably over the last 2+ years so quit blaming Republicans and Bush. This $825 Billion package has too much crap in it and it will not get the economy going, it will instead hurt people and companies. I fo one do not blame the GOP for not supoorting it. The GOP cares about the people and want the right package so things can get moving again.

Have you ever noticed it is always the same ones making statements. They're always huddled in a tight little group so they can get their faces on camera. janet, ohio   January 27th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

You want bipartisanship? (That's a rhetorical question, BTW, since we all know very well that he doesn't) Here's bipartisanship: the Republican candidate got 46% of the popular vote, so give 46% of the stimulus money to the republicans to spend as they see fit. It doesn't get any more bipartisan than that, but of course, Obama is not interested in that.

Chris   January 27th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

What folks need to understand this economic mess was not an over night affair and there is no over night fix for it. The Presidents plan will take time to work, but it is only a part of a long term plan to fix some of the problems. So, for the Republican not to vote for it or at least come to some mutual agreement on it is crazy. I mean seriously how many everyday Republican are feeling this economy? I mean some of these Congressional Reps and Senators are about themselves and not the folks they represent!!! Get on board with the plan!!!

Tom in S.A. – I agree w. you in part. I do like that he is a Listener. We need that in a president. However, I do think this stimulus bill will have some good effects...and this is why: where I live, 1000's of people have been laid off from Catapillar. With the stimulus plan including infrastructure, this may get those people back their jobs. It's worth a shot!

If the Republicans do not want to get on board then leave them at the station. Obama has done his part to include them and ask for their input. It's sad that we are still so divided in this country; we can't even come together for the common good of the American people. I would like to know what brought this country to the point of being divided by titles such as democrate and republican. We are known by the United Stated of America, yet we act like the Divided States of America.

Therefore, this lead me to say our leaders had no problem with handing out 700B dollars to wall street for them to turn around and spend tax dollars on lavish spa treatments and polished bonuses, while the average American is still suffering. So, my question is how is it that they have a problem with spending billions on helping the American people who keep this country functioning?

To those who say this is socialism and big government spending, well it's going to take government to intervene at this point, because to many Americans have suffered grave loses and can't turn this country around by opening new businesses or by hiring people. Major companies are being hit so how will a small business be able to stay a flot unless it get some type of help. Unfortunately, most Americans would prefer to stand on their own two feet, but a this point it is a little hard to do. Many Americans received stimulus checks last year during the spring and that money went on credit card debit, because people can't afford to pay their bills anymore. So I say again, don't knock something if you don't have clue to what many Americans have been hit with in the last few years. I'm sure many of you who are bad mouthing this government spending to boost the economy got those stimulus checks as well. Did you send those checks back to Washington or did you keep them? If you are going to reject the spending of tax dollars to help America then you must reject any checks sent out to you in your name to support your convictions.

Just some thoughts of a woman who loves America and what we are suppose to stand for a United people.

Will-South Dakota   January 27th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

The Republicans will be OBSTRUCTIONISTS to any reform to our economy, how come they never challegened Bush when he was in office they skipped hand-in-hand with him then to get us into this mess, now they don't want to take the responsibility for what they helped to create a melting economy. Come Boenher and McConel step up and be for America for once.

Bill Charlotte, NC   January 27th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

What this country really needs is a bunch of former "do-nothings," who sat on their inept minds for eight years, to suddenly become economic experts, grabbing every camera in sight, to tell the world that those who are now trying to recover the economy are all wrong. This bunch who have for eight years have continually wrecked the bus, somehow want all of us to get back on this bus with them.

Brad   January 27th, 2009 3:46 pm ET

"There are some legitimate philosophical differences" between Democrats and Republicans on how to stimulate the economy, Obama noted, "and I respect that."

Wow – a president that shows respect for the other side. There's something we haven't seen in 8 years!

I just hope the Republicans aren't just buying time so that they can throw in a lot of PORK like they did with the last stimulus package.

Bipartisan Piggies   January 27th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I sure hope the Dems do not get all the pork I'm heaering is in this stimulus bill. This country has seen enough pork to last a lifetime and we have to put an end to it.

Some of the projects I'm hearing that are in the bill are totally worthless to the nation as a whole. We have to get pet projects out of it if this nation has a chance to survive.

We also do not need protectionism like in the steel requirements. America quite being a steel maker years ago and we aren't coming back to where we were ever. Buy American may have a place, but companies must remain competitive...remember what the Dems are saying about our auto makers? Who can afford these $50K green cars everyone is talking about. Change is great. I truly appreciate a grown up who recognizes the bottom line when he sees it because he knows people can't eat ideology. Great that is listening to the other side and I trust that he will come up with a best of breed solution.

I am a democrat agreeing with those Republicans voicing their disagreements against Democrat’s adding into the stimulus package, contraceptives, wasteful spending, non-related items that won’t be of help our economy or create jobs.
Our fate is on Congress. The stimulus package is supposed to be used strictly to create jobs and jump starting our economy!
CONGRESS, ABSOULTLY NO WASTEFUL SPENDING IN THE STIMULUS PACKAGE!!!!!!!!

New Day   January 27th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

I have no doubt that Obama will come to a compromise with Republican members of the House and Senate... ...just like Clinton and Reagan did. This is the difference between the afore-mentioned 3 presidents and Bush. Btw, Boehner, where were you when W was spending us into record deficits? I'll tell you where you were, you were on his desk with your legs behind your neck. Isn't it funny how NOW he suddenly has a backbone?

Johnny C.   January 27th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

Tom in S.A,

I couldn't agree with you more.

The Sun Sets in the East   January 27th, 2009 3:35 pm ET

The GOP only stand to be against EVERYTHING that President Obama proposes ... that's their strategy.

From them, it's politics as usual. They are not interested in solutions because they have guaranteed government jobs.

Have you paid attention to John Boehner lately? Every other word out of his mouth reflect a bad attitude and he has no solutions... ZERO.

Moderates Unite!   January 27th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Allow me some humor! Why is it that every time we want to please the republican it always has to do with contraceptive pills!:) Which reminds me how Mr. McCain could not answer during the election why is Viagra paid but not contraceptive!

Stacy from Leesburg VA   January 27th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

I am certainly excited to see President Obama reaching out to conservatives because it demonstrates the ability to listen and compromise. The GOP, however, appears to not want to play according to Tweedle Dee (J. Boehner) and Tweddle Dumb (E. Cantor). While they choose not to offer any alternatives and have shown no willingness to compromise, they have shown that they are against it for no specified reason other than the fact a Democratic President proposed it. They would rather see America burn than work with President Obama, now that is patriotism boys.

Beverly, NYC   January 27th, 2009 3:25 pm ET

Republicans can you put aside your ego and need to be relevant to do what's right for America and Americans. Remember who you work for, and it's not your political party. Being against this bill without ideas to make it better serves no one. For 8 years we have tried it your hand off the private sector, do nothing, deregulate way, and it did not work out. Please act like adults. If this election has taught you anything it that the people are engaged and paying attention, WE put you in and can take you out. Moderate Republicans please show true courage, remember it only take one.

For all you people who derided the GOP for naysaying the bill and not offering solutions, they ARE offering solutions. But, you know who controls the flow of information to the public....

The GOP should stick to their principles of less government, lower taxes. The "stimulus" may stop a beating heart. Just because times are bad doesn't mean you should compromise your principles and sell out because you want to be popular. Do what's right for our country, think about our future and not about the next quarter.

Tom in S.A.   January 27th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

I applaud his willingness to at least listen to republicans. I don't like this bill one bit but all the so called experts say we need it. I just don't see a lot of jobs being made for those that need it most and we know those politicians are throwing all kinds of crap in there for their districts vs doing what's best for the whole country.

Uncle S.A.M.   January 27th, 2009 3:14 pm ET

The GOP needs to stop nay-saying and offer some solutions. There is no purpose of them being a party if they can not provide solutions to fix the problem. Get to work and stop the partisan bickering.

go away mongers -Ventura ca   January 27th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

I was hopeful listening to some republicans talk about how we need to act for the good of the Country...hoping it would turn into ACTION. I guess most of them will always stay stuck-on-stupid and that's why their party is dying a slow death. After watching some good ole boys from Georgia and South Carolina last night, my hopes for bipartisan effort has diminished.
'President Obama: we don't need them- that's why the People gave you a Democratic Congressional MAJORITY!
We need CHANGE- with or without the conservative blowhards that got us into this mess in the first place! Let them and rush limbaugh continue their circle jerk- Let's get on with the business of CHANGE!

Meg Ulmes   January 27th, 2009 3:13 pm ET

How dare the Republicans after all the money that government has spent in the last eight years on their watch, balk at spending money now. Like they never did!!!! They are responsible for the huge debt the government now has and all the problems we need to get out of.

RJN   January 27th, 2009 3:12 pm ET

Everyone please put all the bitterness aside. A plan has to be done to fix this country. I don't care who comes up with the ideas ( Rep or Dem) just make them sound and realistic.
Senators do what the people voted you in office for, compromise, and solve our issues.

Once everything is somewhat back to normal then you can battle it out to see which party is better????

JL   January 27th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

Right......................President Obama, how many "ideals" can republicans really offer you. They (republicans) were the majority in Congress and in the W.H. for 8 years and look at the total MESS this country and the World is in, thanks to "republican leadership". I say you President Obama are better off NOT relying or looking to the republicans for the "time of day", they are WORTHLESS to say the least. What a JOKE, looking to same sorry group of "do nothings" that got us in this mess.

katiec   January 27th, 2009 3:11 pm ET

President Obama should just forget about the republicans.
After the American people voted for change, they still just do not
get it. They continue to poster, finger point, take ego trips and support their out of touch party and ideals. They refuse to acknowledge or admit that it was their policies and leading of our government these last eight years that almost destroyed our country. Why in the world would anyone give any creditibility to their suggestions?
They will never unify as they are incapable of doing what is right
for our country.

EBC   January 27th, 2009 3:10 pm ET

I'm glad our President is working toward bi-partisan relationships.

Having said that however, when I hear John Boehner and the old Republicans talking about how they are going to vote NO on President Obama's stimulus plan because of a recent CBO Report from the Congressional Budget Office. I realize what LIARS the Republicans truly are. I work in the CBO office. This report the Republicans are siting DOES NOT EXIST!!! I repeat, DOES NOT EXIST!!!! There is no such report, only a pack of lies being spinned by the REPUGS yet again.

John McCain was on FOX NEWS reporting that he too will be voting agains the stimulus plan based on a 6 Billion Internet Broadband Infrastructure bill. What Johnny boy FAILED to tell the American people is that he SUPPORTED and PROMOTED this very same Internet Broadband Infrastructure plan while running for President!!!! He spoke about in on his Presidential campaign stump in Kentucky!!!!
What a TWO-FACED REPUBLICAN LIAR yet again!!

It's NO wonder why based on their Republican IDEALS when it comes to the economy, THEY LOST THE WHITE HOUSE!!! These Senior Republicans are clueless beyond belief. John McCain LOST his Presidential run because of his lack on knowledge when it came to economics!!! DAH.

Are we to continue to listen to these baffoons? I think NOT.

President Obama has been MORE than courteous when it comes to pacifying these idiots, but don't get it twisted, he DOESN'T NEED their approval. He's being very gentlemanly, but these Republicans are going to cut their own noses if they don't get a clue!!!

Sue, NY   January 27th, 2009 3:07 pm ET

They are acting like babies....time to grow up ...the people voted for someone other than a republican to be running the country...they need to open their eyes....

Obama Victim   January 27th, 2009 3:06 pm ET

President Obama...here is your chance to show you meant when you said you are are about change and unity.

Will you accept some of the Republican proposals.....which certainly have merit..................or will you pander to the kool-aid crowd on the left?? Here is you chance to "walk the walk" and be President of all the people

Sandra Day   January 27th, 2009 3:05 pm ET

If the Republicans keep up the approach of "just say no," then I guess we will all have to "just say no" to them in 2010, 2012, 2014. . . . Get the picture?

montag24   January 27th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Why should President Obama give a rat's behind what the Republicans think? They're never going to support him or his efforts no matter how correct he is. And they are the ones primarily responsible for this mess we're in.

So the heck with them. You can't make nice with a rabid dog. It'll go for your throat everytime, so it should be put down.

The Republicans are rabid dogs.

Ula Nejad Sacramento, Ca   January 27th, 2009 3:01 pm ET

"I don't expect 100 percent agreement but I hope we can put politics aside"?. He's dreaming. His inexperience is glaring by the day. He would do better on issues like his aunt's immigration status though he has never won a court case in his lifetime as an attorney.

Priscilla California   January 27th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Republicans are still smarting from their loss and want to do anything possible to stand in President Obamas' way. Great a clue you do not control anything. Stop TRYING to flex your presumed muscle and get to work. The American people want to see action in a positive way. Keep fighting GOP and come next election you will be joining millions
in the unemployment lines. To: McLame McCain The President do not want you to rubber stamp for him. Have you forgotton that your campaign was a disaster. Go to the Senate and try to gain some respect if thats still possible.

cpa in atlanta   January 27th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Read the fine print people...this bill contains nothing in it at all that will provide stimulus to the economy. NOTHING! All is does is try to drive through lousy campaign promises and leaves the bill for our children and grandchildren. Spending for politician's pet projects will not jump start the economy. Only allowing folks to keep more of their own money will.

Swalker327   January 27th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

I love you Obama!!!

Please don't let those loser repubs. slow you down!! I'm all for the bipartisan movement, however, please keep in mind that the repubs. are "programmed" to say no to everything you propose. Stomp them if they get in your way! THEY are the reason we are in dire cirumstances today!

OBAMA MAMA '09!

Aaron Spindler   January 27th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

Why don't we offer stimulus to people that actually own homes? 500 billion dollars would offer 50 million title holders $10,000 dollars per person. Which would definetly be a more effective use of our money, than the current dissapearing act we keep witnessing.

Todd   January 27th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

It's amazing how this POLITICIAN is expecting everyone else to put politics aside! Hail to the Chump!

Baze   January 27th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

The amount of political wrangling that's going on is insane. Obama needs to halt discussions, send Biden after dissident Democrats, create a rock hard argument, and then call a closed door session that no one can leave until there is either a deal or a clear understanding that the next step is political war.

Randy, San Francisco   January 27th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

It is time for the Republicans to present something that work or shut up and stand on the side lines. Pushing the same old cut taxes arguments without major spending is not going to sell to the American people. Even economists with a conservative bent are in agreement with the size and scope of the economic recovery proposal put forward by the Obama administration.

freda   January 27th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

President Obama is doing a fantastic job. The GOP so-called leaders think they will be a thorn in the President's side but they will not succeed. They could care less about doing the right thing. With their 15 minutes of fame and their desire to share in this historic time, they want to be able to brag about the fact that they voted against the President's most important request for the people. I wish they would stop playing politics with peoples lives. I am praying they will become anointed and will show their respect for the people and not for the GOP Company. They should let the President be the President and should not allow their bruised feelings deter President Obama from doing what's best for the Country. They need to throw their egos under the bus and get about the business of what's good for all, not just Republicans.

Richard S   January 27th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

President Obama should be commended for his efforts to include everyone in his economic stimulus program. He is giving Republicans more of a say than his predecessor ever gave Democrats when they controlled the Congress for 6 years.

Helene   January 27th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

The GOP has become totally irrelevant. 8 years of abysmal policies and they want more of it ? Please !

facts are facts   January 27th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

I watched the Daily Show with John Stewart last night where he played clips of speeches made by Republican politicians on the closing of Gitmo.

These clips among others Obama showed of American prisoners completely exposed these Republicans as idiots and morons.

There is no logical way anyone can expect to achieve anything constructive in a bipartisan way with people who aren't capable of making any more sense than these mental midgets who were revealed in these video clips.

dray   January 27th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Do as he say's and follow what he does and America will be ok. We did it the way the GOP wanted us to for 8yrs and look where that has taken us. All I can say to them is shut up hold on and come along for the ride while Obama leads us on the path that this great country should be on.
We look forward to Palin running in 2012 so that we can have another 4yrs to right the wrongs that the GOP has done over the years. Your days are done GOP and so is Rush and his crap. We are moving on so if you all want to live in what you call back in the good ole days have at it but as for us the good days are in front of us.

Dont blame me   January 27th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

This is a BAD PORK ladden package that is stimulus in NAME ONLY.

There is very little in this package offered up by Obama and the democrats that will actually jump start the economy and it WILL drag out the recession.

This plan is worse than the one Bush offered up and that one wasn't any count either.

Vote NO and vote often.

Laura   January 27th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Wow! I'm extremely impressed with Obama's ability to actually communicate with mutual respect...amazing..a grown up in the White House. Now let' see if the children in the Republican party actually want to get ANYTHING accomplished that is even close to a thing called "progress" or if they just would like to sit there and listen to themselves talk like every other windbag in the party..

change we can believe in... Bipartisanship

With 68% approval rating, 365 Electoral College win, 2 million people at the inaguration in 20 degrees temperature, and almost a clean swip for the democrats on the election based on "No more tax cuts for the wealthy few", what does he do? He goes and speaks with the Republicans in congress – three times in one week.

This man is serious about "Bipartisanship".

Florida John   January 27th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Obama is not listening to republicans. What he is doing is talking with them and hoping his big smile will win them over to his socialism. Please, republicans, don't fall for this charlatan. We are going down the tubes under his "leadership" which is his intent to CHANGE us to be the way France is.

Good luck, President Obama. You're dealing with the "my way or the highway" gang. That's why they're roadkill in the highway right now so maybe they'll learn something about cooperation and that Supply Side economics doesn't work. For the sake of our country, I sure hope so.

Only Obama can be that positive.
Hopefully, those 2 rep(boehner and cantor) that have made up their minds before he has even met with them, will see this.
They might even listen.......
At least Obama is trying to put politics aside.
Positive is just what we all need right now.
We also need to see that those in congress (house and senate), care about all us little guys.

"SarahPac will support local and national candidates who share Gov. Palin's ideas and goals for our country," says the PAC’s Web site, which promises that Palin will be "a strong voice for energy independence and reform."

You know, I don't wanna bust nobody's balls but SarahPac?? I wonder what kind of ideas she's gonna have and according to what I read, it'll be about reforming and energy independence?? YOU know, we had a good conversation here last time and at night where we talked abut one of the underrated nominees to run in history. Believe it or not, we actually talked about that to Senator McCain, considering his history is well written in politics. Senator McCain may be one of the most underrated nominees to run for President...and all I'm gonna say I'm very intrigued what she has to say or do...

And one last thing, we've heard the news conference. It was good, the right words were said, the "photo op" is good, in terms of public relations. Pretty good start so far but that's only the beginning...

Mark NJ   January 27th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

These republicans have some balls. They owned congress from 1996 until 2007. In the last 7 years when they both owned congress with a republican president, they took a huge surplus and squanered it and spent it like a drunk'n sailor. They have destroyed this economy like Hoover, Reagan, and George Bushed ,only to have the democrats continually fix it (remember the depression, Silverado,Bushed and Paulson's last give away to the banks). These guys are the pond scum of the earth!!!

P.S. Wait untill there are bread lines and they still want tax cuts for 25% un-employed!

THE REAL TRUTH!

Dan, TX   January 27th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Compromise. It is a beautiful thing to see. The democrats don't get all they want, the republicans don't get all they want. No one is completely happy. When the congress is sad because they didn't get their way, the American people are happy!

ACORN payback time
"House Republican Leader John Boehner issued a statement over the weekend noting that the stimulus bill wending its way through Congress provides $4.19 billion for "neighborhood stabilization activities." "He said the money was previously limited to state and local governments, but that Democrats now want part of it to be available to non-profit entities. That means groups like ACORN would be eligible for a portion of the funds." Moreover, if you spend a few moments reading the bill it becomes a chilling tale of government mandates in education and social engineering:

ACHIEVING EQUITY IN TEACHER DISTRIBUTION.
—The State will take actions to comply with
section 1111(b)(8)(C) of ESEA (20 U.S.C.
6311(b)(8)(C)) in order to address inequities in the distribution of teachers between high-and low-poverty schools, and to ensure that low-income and minority children are not taught at higher rates than other children by inexperienced, unqualified, or out of-field teachers.

It is obvious that the government bureaucracy will expand at an ever increasing rate. Welcome to the Obama Politburo. WElCOME TO THE COUNTRY of MEDIOCRITY!! This way all kids will get a trophy for merely participating, and not performing! Just like little league baseball and soccer!

Everyone should contact their congressman and scream NO on this bill; we should not be funding inner city problems; that's unAmerican, and socialistic at it's core.....Gee I hope CNN will post this and not cover it up

sandee in Portland   January 27th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

I find it irresponsible that the republicans are trying to hold up the stimulus bill. All that aside, however, I do think that the stimulus bill not contain any probjects that will not provide jobs for the general public. The trickle down theory doesn't work anymore and won't work at all in a depressed economy like ours. It's not that I wouldn't like a tax break, but the tax break won't be large enough to make me spend any more money than I currently do. I'm slightly mollified that President Obama wants to include money out of his bill that goes overseas to support family planning. The stimulus money should only be used to help our country not other countries.

Bill in DC   January 27th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

These guys just can't put down the shovel.....

I find it interesting, if not laughable, that the Republicans are now expressing such grave concern regarding spending, tax cuts and the effect they will have on future generations. These are the same sheep that were not concerned about any of those things and stood by grinning while bush was throwing our money down the toilet!! ....bi-partisanship is as important now as it was for the last 8 years....NOT.

Boner and his boys needs to remember that the reason they lost is because the American people are SICK of the egos and want those elected to actually do their job.....Obama is doing his, the republicans need to do theirs.

MaryJo Bruce Surprise, Ariz   January 27th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

Stimulus is giving me lower taxes like an extra $300-$400 a month more so I can go out and buy something on a one time basis or on time. Not just giving me a one time $500 check. That did not do anything in the past and it will not do anyting now. People saved it or paid a bill. We need monthly money to get things. A car, a new roof,
some new appliances, and the list goes on. Even if it was $1000 sure thats nice. But once spent, its over. Now, a monthly figure is whats needed. Government waste is whats been going on for 50 years and looks like will continue. This government pork just doesn't stop. The Gov must think the average american is so stupid they will never be able to figure out whats pork and what isn't. The Gov needs to get out of the business of some of these programs that the states should take over. get out of our lives. We can handle alot of stuff without their interference.

Rick in WA   January 27th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

Putting politics aside is really kind of an ignorant statement. If politics has a purpose it is just this–checks and balances. It is this same party opposition that forces debate and analysis, regardless of which party has the majority. Both major parties have shown over the past few decades that neither has all the answers.

Duh-uh   January 27th, 2009 2:24 pm ET

Why the Republican mantra of "lower taxes" is horse feathers: Taxes get paid by people with income and companies with profits. The problems we face are unemployment and companies going broke! So how would lower taxes help those who pay no tax? And we need action NOW, not more "trickle down horse feathers"!
