President Obama will head to Canada on February 19.
President Obama will head to Canada on February 19.

(CNN) –- President Obama will take his first foreign trip as commander in chief to Canada next month, his press secretary announced Wednesday.

“Canada is a vitally important ally and the president looks forward to the opportunity to speak with Prime Minister Harper and visit our neighbor to the north,” White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs said during Wednesday’s press briefing.

Obama will head to Canada on February 19. Gibbs did not announce any further details about the president’s itinerary.

Former President Bush took his first international trip to Mexico, but many U.S. presidents have started their terms with a visit to Canada.

An American, you could benefit from a trip to Canada yourself. It would help you get over your fears of being "ruled by the government". It's not exactly the Gulag up here you know. Most of us have a pretty good life with all the freedoms you have. We just have more snow, less crime, and no Rush Limbaughs.

pay no attention to few most people in this country are very happy President Obama is in and finally someone who knows where we are

People outside the States are watching the goings on with deep interest. He is an inspirational leader an intellect and we only want what is best for our friends, and family members scattered throughout the states

Plus our politics are without all the drama and far more interesting, we have the usual fools trying to get in without our approval...thinking they can do better than Stephen Harper...nothing like the rifts you have between the north and south, the Dems and Republicans

We are aware because we get all your channels and are up to date on everything that happens.

Welcome President Obama....can ONLY hope to get there to see him in person but doubt that would happen

How many morons does it take to post a blog? Let's see at least 5 (Ian, Matt, Kate, An American and Westviewkid). Obama has been in office for 8 days now and you idiots are already piling on thanks to the bang up job that the village idiot did over the last 8 years. You mentally challenged individuals all probably voted for the former president who gave us the last eight years. Thanks a lot. Just goes to show you that not all American should be allowed to vote or use the internet or should I say the "internets". Idiots!! Why don't you all move to Canada?

He will be able to land here in this snow we have been getting in Ottawa? By the way, is he coming as a Friend of Canada, or just because he wants to. And Yeah, what should we believe about NAFTA?

Have a good time, eh? And try to visit the best part of Canada when the Olympics come, in 2010. You might not be able to afford a house in Vancouver, even on your salary, but it's a great place to visit.

Hey Obama – stop by a Canadian medical clinic to see what your Universal Healthcare proposal will do to a country. Ask anyone how long they must wait for service and think if you want your precious daughters subject to such a program.

Oh wait – you're not subject to the same laws and rules the average citizen must endure ("special loan rates", "land-deals with convicted felons, etc).

Well Bush not only made his trip to Mexico vs. Canada but also Snubbed Canada after 9/11. But Canadians are thick skinned. However, I know Canada will be thrilled to welcome President Obama!

President Obama can set a much- needed example for Canadians of real leadership ,specifically the courage to face tough economic issues head- on. Harper( or whomever is PM) when President Obama visits can certainly use a reality check. President Obama's visit is an event Canadians look forward to with great anticipation. His choice of Canada as the first country he visits is a huge step forward in Canadian- US relations.
