WASHINGTON (CNN) - Washington souvenirs worth $100,000 - including images of the Capitol dome and printings of the U.S. Constitution - are locked in storage, blocked from sale in the new U.S. Capitol Visitors Center because the items are made in China.
Rep. Bob Brady, D-Pennsylvania, chairman of the House Administration Committee, told CNN Radio that he warned operators of the visitors center not
to purchase merchandise made outside the United States, but they did it anyway.
Although the center has the goods in hand, Brady said, "I'm not allowing them to sell those products."
His Administration Committee oversees operations in the House of Representatives, including the House restaurant, parking facilities and the Capitol Visitors Center. A spokesman for the committee said other House gift shops also are under restrictions on items made outside the United States.
Brady, whose district includes Philadelphia, insists it's wrong for tourists to return home with a souvenir from the nation's capital that bears a "'Made in China' sticker."
"We can certainly find people that can make souvenirs of the nation's capital in America," Brady said. In the past 10 days, he said, up to 40 U.S. companies have contacted his officer eager to provide Capitol souvenirs and trinkets.
As for the items the Capitol Visitors Center operators got from China, Brady said: "They made the mistake, they can send them back."
He concedes the visitors center may have to pay shipping costs to return the goods, but said, "If we have to lose a little bit, we'll lose a little bit."

Good job Bob!!!!!!
'Bout time...
I think we should truly repeal or severely overhaul NAFTA, bring our manufacturing jobs back home where they belong, and once again be proud of "Made in USA" and "American Made," our economy will be on its feet again. Everything got outsourced to the detriment of U.S. and I put the "you and me" in U.S.!!!! Let's steer far far away from NAFTA and CAFTA and whatever else trade agreements that are similar, and we will do fine! I just hope that important politicians and lawmakers also read these blogs and not just us "common folk." Let's be proud of USA again and bring our manufacturing jobs home!
Bring our jobs back from India and China.
And send the green-card holders home if there's a qualified American that can do the job. We've lost too much already.
Could this be the start of buying US goods and employing US citizens? Maybe we'll cut down on the amount of items coming from China that need to be recalled due to poisons.
Of course, the Chinese Government isn't going to like this one iota.....
I agree totally with Rep. Brady. I also have never bought a foreign car. Always look at clothing labels to make sure they are made in the USA, and never shopped at a Walmart. Go figure.
I like this guy! and what a valid point.
What were they thinking? How can we work to stimulate the American Economy and request that people buy American goods (which will stimulate the economy) while we think that it is okay to sell non-American made goods in the Capitol? Honestly, when did it become okay to outsource the making of I "Heart" US goods? Where is the pride in America we are trying to sell if we cannot buy it first?
Military Judge James Pohl has refused the Obama administration's order to delay the arraignment of Abu al-Nashiri, the accused planner of the 2000 USS Cole attack in Yemen.
Right On! send it back NO more Made in CHINA its taken enough of our jobs in the USA now its our country's time to Made in the USA !!!!
It is about time!!!
I applaud this Senator for doing this. It is ridicoulus that even in the US Capitol you cannot find a souvenir that's made in the US. 100,000 jobs lost this week alone, and we are still outsourcing? Give me a break! I hope a lot more of our elected oficials sign on to this.
Awesome...I applaud you sir for putting your foot down. I'm sure some American worker can make goods for Capitol Visitors Center.
Good for Brady! I agree.
Since we get so much shoddy, dangerous junk made in China that has caused illness and death to people and animals (melamine, lead, diethylene glycol or DEG, God knows what else), I have become more and more suspicious of products made in China. I recently ordered these microwave baking pans from Publishers Clearing House. They came yesterday and when I opened the box the first thing I saw was a gold MADE IN CHINA sticker on them. I suddenly realized that with what might be harmful in the manufacturing of these pans could feasibly leech into the food in the microwave. I'm writing my Congresswoman and suggesting we do what Brady suggests. China has no safety standards yet, and when their manufacturers make stuff that hurts and kills people (milk and infants a couple months ago), they are sentenced to DEATH, or they commit suicide. Better we stop taking in so much crap from China and make and buy American!
Now, this is a step in the right direction! Unfortunately, we need to break the habits of far too many Americans and get the same ideas working at the biggest retailer in the country, Wal-Mart! I own a small retail business and have been aggressively eliminating items that are made in China! It can't be good for us, as a country, to be buying such a ridiculous amount of our goods from China! I love that this is happening at the Capital; now we just need to have it snowball to the rest of the country!
How stupid
sell them and don't repeat the mistake. that's a lot of materials to just waste, not to mention the pollution and expense generated by shipping them back and destroying them...
Bravo Bob Brady, democrat representative, for sticking to principal, for upholding national pride, for supporting US businesses.
From the right.
Now how about at the points of entry check all items produced overseas. Have
items sent back to point of origin. Let these companies that were once on american soil get the message, IF YOU WANT TO HAVE YOUR PRODUCT IN THE U S A THEN MOVE BACK TO THE U S A OR KEEP YOUR PRODUCTS
It would be either that or pay one large tariff tax . BUT FOLKS THIS WILL NEVER HAPPEN,, NO ONE HAS THE BACKBONE TO ADDRESS THIS PROBLEM. NOT EVEN BUBBA [ OBAMA ]. They just keep on giving these companies tax breaks for taken u.s. jobs
I am very glad that we are working the issues that are really important to the United States.
What next? Are we going back to Freedom Fries?
Good for you!!!!
Wow.. what is this country coming to?
i'm all for free trade and all that good stuff
but this is nuts.
can we please do whats right and not what makes money?
i don't care about democrats or republicans anymore. i'm voting for and supporting anyone who does the right thing.
Way to go, Congressman Brady. Thanks for taking a stand.
Sounds expensive. I hope the center can make up the lost revenue somehow. It's going to be hard to make payroll this month.
You think the "chairmen" could have provided a list of US vendors before the order went out.
That might have saved $100K.
Congratulations to Rep. Bob Brady. This is called putting your foot down,
and stand up for what is right. Enough is enough. It is not just the sticker that needs to be changed.
I'm glad someone has the guts to prevent "Made in China" items from being sold in this country especially in the Nation's Capital. The products made in China are cheap and shoddy and should not be allowed in this country. If an American company moves their manufacturing business overseas they should be heavily taxed. Our country is losing business to countries who burn our flag and discredit our country. Lets stand up and fight these businesses and buy AMERICAN
I also believe that everything that is sold in this country should have a label telling us where this article came from. I will not buy anything made in China or Mexico, especially food from Mexico.
Good For Him!!!!
"We can certainly find people that can make souvenirs of the nation's capital in America," Brady said. In the past 10 days, he said, up to 40 U.S. companies have contacted his officer eager to provide Capitol souvenirs and trinkets."
From the looks of it, it doesn't. Seems like the only thing we're good at is our ladies...by the way, we can't ague with, we agree that, LOL!! I mean, Imet more ethnically and racially different women than probably during my whole life time...I'm still looking for that French one, and I'm trying, LOL!! Gotta love the U.S.A...
But for real, is anyone agreeing with me?? Guys? You in? No? Alright, we suck...
Thank goodness for some sense at last! Send it ALL back. The American people would be appalled if they read the labels of where so much of what buy is made. We're burying our economy. Buy American!!
Symbolic of the decline of this great nation!
Good for him! I would like to buy American more often, but often can not find an item not made in China.
Let's increase our manufacturing base in the US and put more of our citizens back to work! I applaud this move.
I have to agree. I want to buy American now more than ever. We should definitely buy American in the Capital's visitors center!
Good for you Rep Brady!!
Well its about time! Goods to be sold out of a government gift shop have absolutely no business coming from anywhere but the U.S.A.!
While this seens to be childish I say good for him.
What a JOKE! Dems only knows how to cut corners to cover up the fact they just can NOT stimulate the economy as they touted. Even if we return everything back to China, we will still have a employment problem. That is caused by confidence. The costs of production for certain items in the U.S. are much higher even under the current environment. People are not in the buying mood, not to say purchasing more expensive American goods. A LAME DUCK PLAN as you can expect from a Dem.
Good for you, Bob! We need a national push to buy items made in America. If it means they cost more, they are worth it.
That-a-boy Bradley! Let's alienate those 1.5 Billion Chinese people! We'll make it a news story that we won't buy their insignificant crap which results in backlash so that they won't buy ours...
If you're going to push these types of issues at least try to make a tie between these products and products of ours that China refuses to sell.
Considering they're a huge consumer market who's spending has increased of the years, It makes sense that we'd want to tick them off over a few trinkets! I can see that you're a true politician... This story might help you get re-elected but won't help open markets in China – in fact, I can hear the door shutting as we speak.
What a mindless game we play with our tax dollars..
But yet Republicans think they're the "real" Americans.
Thank-you, Senator. I have often gone to Washington, DC and other 'National' parks, exhibits and always REFUSE to buy any souvenirs, trinkets or photos made 'in China' or anywhere else outside the United States of America.....Come on folks... AMerican Made, especially now..
He's a freak, that's crazy.
Just use the Chinese stuff... crazy guy!
Bravo! One small step to giving work to our American workers! I commend you.
Give me a break you hypocrites! We have borrowed mega bucks from China and Obama is greedy for more?
ITS ABOUT TIME why cant they take a chunk of that stimulis money and rebuild our Factories and Make things Here in America Again? with Factories and Infrastructure We should Produce Jobs like crazy!
GOOD! The entire government complex should do the same. Along the same lines,,,,so should every American. Our friends and neighbors are in trouble. We need to buy products that are made by them. CHECK THE LABEL FIRST!
I hope everyone will enjoy paying 200-300% more for their souvenirs and still have them made with cheap materials.
My USA sweatshirt is made in China.
Ok, this makes sense. Lets put the American owned import/export company out of business.
I wonder how many things in this demcorat's office are made in China.
This is a joke.
Good for him, I agree, they should not be sold in the USA.
I so not think we should all the goods China now sends come into the states. They should be limited to the amount of goods we can send into China.
PLEASE WILL U 4 ONCE ADDRESS PRESIDENT OBAMA AS SUCH INSTEAD OF JUST "Obama and Palin" OR "Obama-Limbaugh", HE IS THE PRESIDENT OF USA AND PLEASE SHOW SOME RESPECT IF NOT WHAT U LEARNED IN JOURNALISM SCHOOL.
It's about time someone stood upfor American interests and American jobs.
Obviously no Republican would ever do that.
Thats right! Unlike the Republicans we want American made products.
Bob Brady for President!!!!!
We need China to fund our national debt. We need tourists to buy anything we sell. You're going to sell food from other countries in the capital food court so to be consistent, you wouldn't be able to buy a banana! Lift the trade restriction & simply sell the items.
as it should be-I remember singing the "look for the Union label..." song as a little girl. Now everything I own is made somewhere else. It's almost as if big companies and manufacturers no longer have pride or trust in American products. Shameful. Especially in our nations capitol city.
Somebody needs to recognize that this country needs to get back to the art of making our own products. China has cornered the market on production and there is no competition. I don't believe that they will continue to make products that much cheaper than anyone else..I don't understand why this country's ability to manufacture has been sold down the river to the Chinese. It doesn't really matter where you shop....Walmart...the 99 cent store or Macy's or Nordstrums...It's all made in China. I own a business and even if I puchase a product from a USA Business; it will arrive in a box stamped Made In China.
WONDERFUL, MARVELOUS, ITS ABOUT TIME. Rep. Bob Brady, D-Pennsylvania. I only hope your peers get the message. More of the same and we wouldn't be lossing so many jobs in the USA.
Bravo! Congress need to take this to the next step and ban any foreign made items to be sold at any vendor that is run and/or operated by the federal government, like the Smithsonian gift shops. I was there at the museums a few weeks ago and all the gift items were made in China. Can you imagine a tourist from another country coming to Washington and purchasing a souvenir and taking it back home which is made in China. That is a real shame! I applaud this Senator for standing up for American business and workers. Let's get our people back to work.
should not this be done throughout the country.
I'd love to buy american. Unfortunetly its cheaper to buy non-american. And for the most part – larger purchases (Cars, appliances...etc) non-american is better. Toyota, Honda, Sony are three huge brands that are typically the best-of-the-best. They are not too expensive, but they retain their value longer and work consistently better and longer than American.
The goal is not to punish the people that buy the cheaper product out-of-Country, but to either tax it higher or give discounts to American workers/companies to make products cheaper or their ability to compete. American Companies do not make the same quality parts for the same price.
Been to the statue of Liberty souvenir shop and 95% of the goods sold there are made in china. Now why would I come all the way to the USA from my country to pick up a souvenir made in China. Pretty shameful. The same goes for Disney too.
It's about time ! Thank you senator !
Good! That's why I quit shopping at Wal-mart (among other reasons). Time to walk the talk and "BUY AMERICAN".
Rep. Bob Brady, D-Pennsylvania I applaud you and your staff sir. It's about time someone decided to take a practical stand on this matter for whatever the reason may be. It is a matter of pride to buy American, especially at this time. Also, I don't think we should allow so many items from a country that has very little, if any, safety guidelines in place. I am not sure about some of the items that we import and the correlation between them and some of these new health issues that we face here in America.
THANK YOU !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They need to curb items made outside of the US, PERIOD
Of course the items sold in the Capitol Visitor's Center should have been made in America, I wonder who ordered them from China in the first place, he should be fired at once. I wonder it items sold in China are made in the USA?
This guy should get a medal. Good for him and it's about time someone in government takes this kind of stand. Sick of this country helping the Chinese economy instead of our own.
Thank you Sen. Brad. I think it is about time the USA governmemt puts a stop to the practice of allowing importation of products made overseas. Put a tarriff on every thing imported to bring the price up to the same price it would cost to make it here. This would slow down the importation of junk and create more jobs that are sorely needed here. It would also raise more money for the country and lower the taxes for our citizens. Charity begins at home.
Oh, and Bill, you're an idiot if it matters what party someone is from as to whether something like this gets done. I'm independent but my congressman is GOP and he fights for every job in our county. You just buy into the two party scam, evidently.
I agree, when buying souvenirs in another country I would expect that they be made in that country. After all, my purpose in buying the product would be to take a memory of the country home with me. However, we must not be so naive to believe that if we stop buying from China, and start buying American, jobs will return to America. This is not so. Almost everyone of the comments that have been made about this article believe that if we start buying American jobs will be produced. Unfortunately, each commentor failed to realize that the cheap prices which China provides allows us Americans to increase our purchasing power. Say we do start manufacturing products in the U.S., and we do start creating more jobs, who is going to buy? Europe? Asia? No, no one will buy because the whole world is hurting economically, and why would they buy when they can get the same products for cheaper prices from China. Take a look at the bigger picture. The dilemna not just getting the American economy out of the gutter, rather it is getting the world economy back on track. In turn, a stronger Asia, a stronger Europe, and a stronger S. American will help the U.S. remain strong.
Dear Rep. Bob Brady,
Congratulations for trying to save the American manufacturing industry. It is a big shame that most of the daily household products we use here are imported. The next step, which must be included in the current stimulus bill, should be to promote American-made vehicles by increasing tariffs/taxes on all foreign-made vehicles regardless of the brand or name. As you know, the BEST SUVs are made by GM, the BEST VANS by Chrysler, and the BEST HEAVY TRUCKs ENGINES by CATerpillar and Cummins.
Respectfully,
Jules
I thought this county believed in free trade. And I did not know that a solitary politician had the unilateral authority to ban goods made in other countries from sale in the US. This seems illegal.
Yeah! America comes first here, now who's the socialist? You Rock, and we applaud you Dem-Brady. thank you. It's time to putup or shut up.
This is about as silly as 'freedom fries'....in a free market economy, ameicans can buy what they want. Putting in any trade restrictions takes away from that freedom. What other anti freedom free market hating initatives does this policitcan have up his sleve?
Excellent! Wrap it up and give it to the clowns who ordered the crap as their take home pay. Stop the cheap communist plastic crap – no matter if it comes from Walmart or the US government.
Buy American or bye-bye American.
BRAVO–BRAVO, finally a democrat that shares my thoughts...
This would be a good idea....unless you are an American working import/export or working in the shipping/stevedore business. Sucks to be you.
I am sure the import/export people will understand being put out of a job because of "patriotism".
This is a good start.
What stupidity. Americans are forgetting that they are also selling stuff in other countries such as China and India – huge markets. If these countries start doing the same, American economy will even hurt more. So, if Americans decide to import less, so will the rest of the world.
I notice the comments and right away I can sense the republicans wishing they should of thought of it first. Sorry you lost ..........again! HA! (like christ mathews laugh).
Fire those responsible!
Chine makes nearly ALL the products we buy – no wonder Americans have no jobs.
China has become wealthy – the United States has become broke and bankrupt.
What happened to our country?
It's definitely a START! And, all those consumers who take what little money they have and support those Made in China and elsewhere products, MUST STOP AND THINK ABOUT HOW THEY ARE NOT SUPPORTING Made in the USA truly HOMEGROWN PRODUCTS!
By shopping at stores or companies who have their products made outside America, are just cutting their own throats!
About time. We need our jobs back here. Too many liberals, and right wingers have free traded our country away. Take care of our people first. If that is politically incorrect so be it.
GOOD!!!!!!!!!!
At last!!!
This is a pet peeve of mine! WE need to get back to basics as a nation! And we should set a better example. Make things HERE – employ American workers, have better safety and environmental standards! Ask anyone – would they be willing to pay a few bucks more for a kid's toy if they KNEW it was free of lead paint AND helped employ folks here in the US?
Might be nice for someone to check that the products are made in one of the actual 50 states, and not US held possessions like Saipan, where workers are basically treated like indentured servants.
"I hope everyone will enjoy paying 200-300% more for their souvenirs and still have them made with cheap materials."
Thomas, this is exactly one of the reasons this country is in this mess. We want the easy way and/or cheap way to live. I have been looking for "American Made" labels for a long time and they are few and far apart. Let's begin by putting our country first. If this means that you have to save for your retirement instead of letting the corporation save your retirement/pension for you – do it. Accountability is the answer. GOOD FOR BRADY!!!! Let others follow suit.
I think I'll intentionally buy something made in China or India just to spite this absurd protectionist sentiment. I can't believe people could be so xenophobic.
A good start ( Sharon maybe you should move to China). If more and more of the US population would boycott goods made in other countries in the long run we would be better off. But lets not forget who got us here. Its the unions and their continious cry for higer wages, and the free trade agreements. Stop them we need to support our country and our jobs first and foremost. Our economy is in trouble, we need to take back our boarders and rebuild our economy. I would and will gladly pay more for products made in the US.
I support this.
While I can understand where Bob is coming from, I don't think he should start a trade war with other countries. There are so many American items being sold in other countries, and if every nation takes the same measures, I am afraid we might see an economic war. American cars can be found in every corner of the planet. Movies and other American stuff that are sold worldwide. Let's not forget that the factories that make these gifts are owned mostly by American corporations, so the message to the representative, be careful what you wish for.
More of your and my money being wasted! OK, so theynought some Chinese made stuff, probably not a wise move. But, just chunking 100 grand? People on here are applauding him for "Doing the right thing!"
More symbolic measures over substance!
If anything, give the stuff away to schools so someone can get some use out of it. That would be much better than just trashing it to "make a point". Indeed, the congressman has a point there, maybe if he could grow enough hair, nobody would find out.
About time an elected official started standing up for US!
"Be American, Save Money, Boycott Wal*Mart"
I support this 100%. We've gotta start somewhere.
Why are there so many angry Republican's on this blog? They say they're the most 'patriotic', yet if a democrat says "buy American-made products" then suddenly you Repubs are against it. Sheesh.
See this story for what it is: An American putting his foot down and saying, "At the American Capital, we sell American-made products". There's nothing wrong with that – in fact, it's the right thing to do! I live in today's economy like the rest of you and, if given the choice to buy a more expensive American-made product over a cheaper product made outside the country, i would in a heartbeat.
This thread is both laughable and disgusting. It's laughable that everyone is "applauding" this man for grandstanding. How many products do you people own that are made in the US? You do nothing in your own life to promote goods being made in the US but bandwagon on this minute and meaningless action. You're just like the people you decry - you go for the cheapest and most readily available goods you can get. Purge your own homes of foreign made goods and then come back and post.
It's also evident very few people understand anything about the economy. Protectionist tendencies always hurt the protectionist nation. This is not the quick fix to the economy that you're looking for and doesn't exist. A few people on Wall Street screwed everyone in the world over and got away with it, and no amount of making trinkets in the US is going to change that.
Way to go Bob-it's about time. I NEVER buy souvenirs that are made in China. I'll visit China if I want a Chinese souvenir.
Good, are these people idiots. Stop promoting China. Idiots.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
We all possess the same power – if you pick up an item and it's made in China, put it back down!
It's about time! We need american made goods but we need QUALITY american made goods. I have 2 ford tauruses, the 2001 is solid as a rock, over 200,000 miles and still going strong with no major repairs. My 2005, different story. Piece of junk, have replaced the transmission, all kinds of ignition parts and the inside is literally falling down around my ears. This is why Americans don't buy American anymore. Take some pride people! Chine already owns us!
Rush Limbaugh is an idiot. I don't want my president inviting this moron to the White House. Stop it, leave this buffoon to strangle and twist in his own hot air.
Wait a minute , IS sombody starting to get the picture here!! Yes!! That is what is wrong with our country. You can't buy a coffee cup or a pair of socks that is made in this country. Remember when one of the major retailors was just getting started , how they taunted that they would sell AMERICAN MADE products, Well that all went by the way side. Everything we use is made somewhere else and THATS THE PROBLEM !!!!!
Visitors should be given choices to buy "Made In USA" version at additional cost or "Made In China" version at current price. We don't need dumb congressmen making choices for us. Then we can find out what people think very soon. I think the reason why markets here are full of "Made in China" goods or "Made in Japan" cars is because people in this country want them.
It's about time, honestly. It's time to choose quality over quantity and start having our products made on our own soil instead of getting them for half the price and a third of the quality instead of helping a potentially enormous threat to our country.
I think this is a great start. I laugh when i think about all of those 'patriotic' Americans who have 'support the troop stickers' on their cars or the really patriotic ones who wear the flag lapel pin – all that junk is made in China. We need to get back to producing in AMerica not just buying junk. And most of the stuff made in China is junk, it lasts a couple days and breaks.
Because the comments have been closed on the Rush ticker – I have to vent here. So fine you get the tax cuts, republicans, but you have to pay for the war and only republicans are the ones who have to fight it.
This is a great sentiment, but won't really work in helping create American jobs. Sure, several US companies have said they'll make the trinkets, but most likely at a higher cost, which means a higher price for a trinket that no one will think is worth the higher price, thus resulting in lower sales and profit at the trinket shop. Now if you want to lower or abolish the minimum wage in an effort to make American workers competitive with international workforces, then perhaps you won't see as many people outsourcing to other countries and you'll see some job creation.
wal- mart better take notice
I think it is especially distasteful that the souvenirs OF the US Capital were made in CHINA. The US should at least send something US made home with the people that visit.
What are we selling Angie, Tell us. Look around you, we are sold. Go to a convienience store, hotel or motel, there are no American faces to see, America has been sold one piece at a time , right under our noses. Those are just an example of what you can see at any time, just imagine what you can't see looks like in these huge corporations, just how many are foreign run, owned and operated, We are in trouble here in AMERICA, people need work and industry is the way to get on the right track again, or at least one of the ways.
Gee whiz people! It's absolutely absurd for the Visitor's Center to sell items "made in China" to begin with. They were warned and they went ahead and purchased them anyway. It might be a bit different if they hadn't been warned. But they were. Now they pay the price! I guess the people who think that it's harsh don't discipline their own children either. Maybe they'll know better next time. But how if they're not punished after the warning? Seriously people.
Give them away to some schools or something? Hmmm....they'd have to be tested first for lead poisoning which would cost more money.
BUY AMERICAN IF YOU WANT PEOPLE TO KEEP THEIR JOBS HERE IN THE USA! SIMPLE FACT!
Good job Rep. Brady! Sad he is the only one raising this issue. It would help if there actually were "Made in USA" articles available somewhere. Too bad there aren't stores selling only those items like there used to be.
Shopping for Christmas I found only Thailand, Viet Nam, China, etc., and I wasn't in discount stores. The quality is so poor, not worth taking home.
Why are we eating tomatoes from Peru, meat from Mexico? Those are just a couple things I've noticed.
It is about time that someone actually did the economy a fair jesture. We as a people need to rely on the sources that we have and become independent of people other than ourselve. I am not saying that the Chinese people are not good atrwhat they do but we need to represent who we are in all the ways that are possible to show forth. In order to get to when we desire to go we must take action NOW.
so stupid. that is still wasted money that is going to sit and collect dust. sell the products so its not wasted, then change vendors from which they order their items from. the vendor is the one ordering the product from china.
This is exactly the way things should have always been. Maybe our economy would not be such a mess right now.
I have no idea why so many morons want to support the continued trade imbalance with China. Apparently you don't realize that we buy roughly $200 Billion more goods from China than they do from us. They continue to hold their currency artificially low so that they are more competitive with non-Chinese companies.
As for the comment on how many goods Americans own that are of Chinese manufacture, how often do people have a choice? Try this. Next time you're in a store, whichever one you frequent, try and find an American made umbrella. It's tougher than you think.
Dave, Purge you home of foreign goods , Sorry their would be nothing left. Because YOU can't BUY anything that is made in America. You have to be able to see that!!!!
Apparently, like the rest of the government, nobody is minding the store here either. It is a wonder how we have managed so long without oversight in our government. This is not a partisan issue nor caused by any identifiable entity other than the system. Now that America is virtually bancrupt, we need a reorganization!!!
Good for Rep. Bob Brady! There is no reason that souvenirs of the US Capitol should be made in China. If anything should be made in the USA it should be this merchandise.
Good! Maybe this will force China to stop making poisonous products!!
ATTA BoyBrady,,,,,,,,,,bout time someone put a stop to that. Even in KY, go to a state park, any state
and you see,,,,,MADE IN CHINA??????????? STOP, enough already
KY,
Citizen from NY. Bravo! Couldn't agree w/you more and couldn't have said it better. Thanks.
I am very willing to pay a little more FOR merchandise that are made in the U.S.A. I hope the with the highest quality.
What Limpbutt won't tell people is that in the stimulus package, there is a paragraph that says: companies getting money for manufacturing can only use the money for steel, etc that is produced in the US!!! Companies also must pay the workers what they would normally make for that job (not paying them pennies for the work); this provides lots of jobs and helps manufacturing companies (if there are anymore left)..........
ITS ABOUT TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!
They knew the rules for new visitors center and disreguarded them anyway. It should come out of their paychecks, let them work as indentured servants until it is paid off. Maybe the next time they will do what they are told and not how to pad their own pockets.
I don't think we want to cut off goods from other countries. However, all Gov. facilites, in all 50 states, that sell souvenirs should sell only
items made in this country or in their state..
Yes, let's hate anything and everything from other countries as much as we can! America first and only America! We are better than everybody, and we are the only people on the earth anyone should care about! Don't help other people in other countries! Don't let any of the other 95% of human beings on this earth have and of "our" jobs! America first!
This is the new attitude! This is the new tone of America! This is great for our new foreign policy attitude of being "nice" to all the other countries...
"Movies and other American stuff that are sold worldwide"
Yeah counterfeit. Where have these people been? We need to rebuild our manufacturing base or soon we'll be buying tanks and airplanes from China. Free trade has limits and we need to start somewhere. If we want to be at the top we need to put US first. If Obama is smart he'll realize we can't help anyone until we can help ourselves or he will loose support of the people in this country. It's why Bush was an idiot he spent trillions in Iraq while we don't have jobs. A deserving fitting getting slammed with the shoe and all; no good deed goes unpunished. I lean republican but leaders don't get dumber than that. I didn't vote for Obama but I support this decision. Fair trade, time to dictate our terms. When will Obama leave Iraq so we can stop wasting our money and blood on people who want to kill one another? Every day is a wasted dime (maybe millions in this case).
"And send the green-card holders home if there's a qualified American that can do the job."
Can't do that we have a legal obligation to people we give permanent legal status. Don't be stupid. The more appropriate statement would be don't give green cards to people who are here illegally or to those who don't have legal base for getting it.
If they were told only USA products then they should be booted out for spending this money ordering/shipping these items here in the first place is just another place of wasted spending others money.
Hopefully if we shout loud enough Washington will hear us now that we have a new President in office....WE WANT AMERICAN GOODS..
WE WANT TO INVEST OUR MONEY INTO OUR OWN LAND.
AMERICA IS NOT FOR SELL...AT ANY PRICE...AND NEITHER IS AMERICANS......
Globalization was a horrible idea. We can blame the elder Bush and Clinton for it. Now, our future as a nation and our prosperity are no longer under our own control. We are at the end of a very long supply chain, and we cannot control what happens at the other end of it.
Conservatism really double-crossed us when they sold us that bill of goods.
Correction, I thought it was the Obama administration that sent them back when in fact it was a congressman.
