The Steelers are this year’s presidential Super Bowl pick.
The Steelers are this year’s presidential Super Bowl pick.

(CNN) - President Obama made a major endorsement Thursday, announcing his support for the Pittsburgh Steelers in this Sunday’s Super Bowl showdown.

“I wish the Cardinals the best. Kurt Warner is a great story, and he’s closer to my age than anybody else on the field,” he said. “But I am a longtime Steelers fan.

Watch Obama make his Super Bowl pick

“Mr. Rooney, the owner, was just an extraordinary supporter during the course of the campaign. Franco Harris was campaigning for me in Pittsburgh…Coach [Mike] Tomlin was a supporter.

“I wish the best to the Cardinals - they’ve been longsuffering, it’s a great Cinderella story. But other than the Bears, the Steelers are probably the team that’s closest to my heart.”

In the midst of the firestorm over Obama’s “bitter” remarks, Rooney endorsed him in advance of the Pennsylvania’s April primary.

"True sports fans know that you support your team even when they are the underdogs," Rooney said in a letter then. "Barack Obama is the underdog here but it is with great pride that I join his team."

I am a long time Browns fan and I voted for Pres. Obama and I will vote for him in 2012, but I hate the "Squeelers" and wish you would have picked Arizona. Pissburg sucks big time.

Well, the economy is spiraling downhill, Obama's already broken campaign promises, our soldiers are risking their lives in an unnecessary war, and oh yeah . . . there was an ice storm to end all ice storms recently.

But at least now I know BO's Super Bowl pick . . . I can rest easy tonight.

I cant believe it…..Steelers Fan!!! Is this the change we voted for? I bet Ayers favorite team is the Steelers… What a terrorist sympathizer. How much did ACORN have to do with the influence of Barry's choice of Super Bowl Champion. Go ahead crazy left libs… drink the Steeler Kool Aide. Wake UP America!!!

I cant wait for Palin 2012 at least she is an honest Cardinals Fan.

These 2 posters are perfect examples of STUPID!!!!!!
Most of US in Pittsburgh are Steeler kool-aid drinkers!!!!!! 228rory is just plain stupid!!!!!

HMAK   January 29th, 2009 6:33 pm ET

President Obama said he was supporting Pittsburgh because the teams owner supported him. Is this a quid pro quo? Oops it can't be – that would be illegal!

Seriously who cares.

pittsburghforever   January 29th, 2009 6:32 pm ET

Aaron in Pittsburgh.. speak for yourself! I'm proud that I voted for Obama and that our GREAT state voted for him too! I don't know what "Pittsburgh" you're from, but the one that I grew up in is all for helping each other, neighbors helping neighbors..

Obama for 8 years!!! Steelers Forever!

Go Arizona

to anyone wishing the president and cnn has more important things to worry about, learn to relax and enjoy an unofficial american holiday. allow the problems to go away for 3 and half hours

I hope Sarah Palin wears her cheer leader outfit.wow.

Think People   January 29th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

Are YOU kidding me CNN???? A Political Move?? So the president cannot chose a winner in a football game just as other common folk without there being a political motive behind it? Please tell the people you are kidding them. Maybe he knows that the Steelers have the #1 Defense in the NFL and great defenses can solidify championships... Ever think about that???

L   January 29th, 2009 6:23 pm ET

I'm with you, JC !

Max Pargament   January 29th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

Although I am a steelers fan too, come on CNN...there are so many more important things going on in the world. Why not report something on:
1) Iraq
2) Afghanistan
3) Pakistan
4) World Hunger
5) Global Warming
6) Alt. Energy
7) North Korea

See Im not even a journalist and I can list all those things I dont see stories on, on your front page.

Consult that list before you report celebrity/unimportant news. In a perfect world it'd be fine to report them, but not now CNN...not now

Anne   January 29th, 2009 6:19 pm ET

I'm a huge supporter of President Obama. But, due to family ties to Arizona, I'll be rooting for the Cardinals. Let's have a great game men!

Viet Vet   January 29th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

I'm going for the cardinals Mr. President -They're in the same division as my Seahawks and they have never been to the big dance.
Wish I could watch it with ya. Have a great time!!!!!

M   January 29th, 2009 6:18 pm ET

Obviously he wants to win Pennsylvania again in 2012, and knows he doesn't have much chance to win Arizona anyway. But Ohio is also a key state, and he might not realize the extent of Browns fans' hatred of the Steelers.

John in VA   January 29th, 2009 6:17 pm ET

This shocks me. Obama seemed like the kind of guy who roots for the underdog and applauds Cinderella stories. I would've guessed him to root for the Cardinals.

I, for one, root for the Cardinals. I am a lifelong Detroit Lions fan, and to see the only team in the NFL that has had worse luck than the Lions make it this far, it would be great to see Kurt Warner hoist the Lombardi trophy.

marge   January 29th, 2009 6:16 pm ET

Abe   January 29th, 2009 6:13 pm ET

Hey I'm a NYGiants fan...Yeah, yeah I know they lost but I'm rooting for the Cards...I think they played well enough through the playoffs to get to Tampa and this could be there chance to bring home the Vince Lombardi for the first time ever in there meak heartbroken franchise!! Now steelers have had five great seasons to get those trophies but the Cards?

The big underdogs this season. The most underrated team to get to the Superbowl. Since the beginning of the playoff games they where slated to lose and it was said they didn't deserve to be there well look at them now! I voted for Obama and even tho he is a Steelers fan I don't care...I Would love to see the Cards make history and once in there sad existence they can be happy! Despite the fact that I live out here in AZ which is a state run by these awful republicans I will always root for the Underdogs! go Cardinals! Win it all!

One word regarding the President's pick:

BOOOO!!!!!

May the best team win in the end.

JayBEE   January 29th, 2009 6:11 pm ET

I hope President Obama gets to flip the coin!

Jo   January 29th, 2009 6:07 pm ET

Why does everyone take everything so seriously. I am not a football fan but I think it's great that the president has come out for a team. With all the bad news coming out everyday, a little bit of fluff is good. People lighten up. Its just like when mayors or govenors make light bets on what team will win.

JC   January 29th, 2009 6:04 pm ET

People . . . please. The man only picked a team to win the Superbowl. I don't think it was a major strategy to win support and votes for 2012. And his pick doesn't make him a socialist or a communist. He just picked a team to win just like everyone else has on this blog.

Debate Stimulus Packages, Gitmo, etc . . . but bad mouth the man over his Superbowl pick or that he even voiced an opinion?

L   January 29th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

Tate, you obviously have issues. "GROW UP!" On another note, I hope the Steelers loose; it's my ex's team.

Clint   January 29th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

I can not believe that some people can not lay hate down for a minute. He simply chose the team he wants to win the Super bowl.
This has nothing to do with Ayers. If you are not careful, hate will become your constant companion, and you won't even realize it.

Aaron   January 29th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

CA Indie for Obama   January 29th, 2009 5:57 pm ET

sorry, Mr. President, but I am rooting against you on this one...

...due to the $20 ticket I have on the Cards to win the super bowl at 40-1!!!

Mark   January 29th, 2009 5:56 pm ET

steven   January 29th, 2009 5:54 pm ET

Who cares about watching a bunch of guys run 5 yards fall down run another 5 yards and fall down and get paid millions of dollars for it when we have almost a million people losing there jobs in this country and still those who make a million complain that they are not getting paid enough money to play football. Well I tell you put in a father who has two kids and is laid off of work and I bet he'll play hurt or injured just so he can put food in his kids mouths

Come on guys, I know our new President is down to earth and a real cool guy. But lets give honor where honor is due. Call him Mr. President or Presidnet Obama. Even when the polls were very low for President Bush and if we thought he was a jerk or not, we still gave him the respect of including Mr. President or President before saying his name.

barack Obama is still just B.O.   January 29th, 2009 5:41 pm ET

Obama and Pelosi have just gotten together to declare that it is not fare that the Steelers and Cardinals are in the Super Bowl and that Detroit is down on their luck and they don't have the players, coaches, etc of the winners so we are going to send the Lions to the Super Bowl to play Kansas City. At the end of the game, to equal out next year, Peyton Manning will play for Detroit, Tom Brady goes to Kansas City, and so on until the good teams become mediocre and all teams are equal.

According to Pelosi, that is the America we all strive for were all are equal regardless of work and dedication and ability.

OH MY GOD...DID I SAY THAT?!? but while i'm on the subject...how 'bout it CNN? is our former commander and chief the only president worth ridiculing for silly, honest mistakes? no worries. we who understand know that making light of such a thing could be construed as a systematic attempt to tear down ones character. and CNN would NEVER do that.

I find it funny and somewhat disturbing that people like 228rory can turn a light hearted story like this into a way to somehow throw Ayers and Acorn into it like they have ANYTHING to do with...well ANYTHING! I'm willing to be these people know nothing about Ayers or Acorn. I'd just be more respectful of conserv's "socialist" and Ayers comments if they'd thought of them on their own! It wasnt until Palin/McCain started their hate/smear campaign that anyone ever said these things! And thats real...

President Obama is so engaging, he's warm and down to earth, he's very approachable and he's very, very funny!! He's also very tech-savvy and in tune with what's going on in the world. THAT is so GREAT to see in a President.

Aaron in Pittsburgh   January 29th, 2009 5:03 pm ET

Being that Pittsburgh is a working man's city we don't need (nor want) Obama as a fan. The true pride of Steeler nation is all about people who work hard for what they have. We don't need this fool coming here trying to peddle his free government handout programs and calling himself a bandwagon fan just to make a few political jabs. Ride the Obama choo choo across the (steel) tracks to the other side of the state to Philly and you'll find a corrupt governor and some Eagle fans that will be sure to accept your free ride handouts.

Deborah   January 29th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

President Obama is so straight forward and honest. How refreshing! Plus he works full days and has worked his keister off since Day 1.

This is truly change that makes me a happy American!

Photon Torpedo Dallas, TX   January 29th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

So much for the Chicago fan President. LOL!! Threw them under a bus quick!

That's okay Mr. President

Obama for 8 years!

From a loyal Cowboys fan.

LIZ   January 29th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

Who cares who his super bowl pick is? The Communist Party of the United States has endorsed his stimulus package, Weathermen say Al Gore is full of it, and this is NEWS???

Steve   January 29th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

"Why is this major news?"

It's not. Lighten up.

BJ   January 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

A long time Steeler fan from Chicago? Bet the house on the Cards!

janet   January 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

i will pick the card's

Paco - Tucson, AZ   January 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

LSeyf & Virginia,

This is news because its sports related and a great deal of Americans care about sports. Especially the Superbowl. It's also something of a human interest story, like those stories about cats adopting a puppies that always seems to make it into the news.

Deal with it.

aj   January 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

The President is wise!
I'm a Dolphins supporter cause I live in Miami but I could never find my self routing against the Steelers. What a great Organization and great owner. I can see Terrible towels all over Tampa.

Go Steelers!

Debbie   January 29th, 2009 5:01 pm ET

I am a fan of neither team although I am rooting for the Steelers because it will be a slap in the face of Dallas fans if the Steelers have more Superbowl wins. That said, I think that the Cardinals have some STELLAR talent – Fitzgerald, Boldin and James for example – and those guys are amazing to watch. But, they're the Cardinals. If they win, I won't be unhappy. But if the Steelers win, just think of Jerry Jones' frowning and messing up all that plastic surgery – priceless!

Kim J   January 29th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

Seems like he ought to stay neutral on this. Just make a comment like "I just hope it is a good, competitive game and that everyone can put their worries behind them for one evening."

Southern Princess   January 29th, 2009 5:00 pm ET

okay. go steelers!

Aloha Obama   January 29th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

Why should President Obama choose Arizona they supported their homeboy McCain.

D-MI   January 29th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

No, Kurt Warner isn't the only reason people would like the Cardinals:

Larry Fitzgerald.

And that's coming from a person who doesn't really care about football.
That guy can run...

Miguel Nunez   January 29th, 2009 4:58 pm ET

I think its beautiful that he pays attention to football. It seems that by him being invested in a commonman type thing such as sports, he is inviting the commonman to BECOME invested into politics.

Its like... by him being so cool, he is reaching out to try to pull people into the fray that is politics.
Its wonderful. I hope many young apathethic people snap out of it and join a rank.....

YOLA   January 29th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

That's right Mr. President, you stick to the one that brung you!

Nigerian nitemare   January 29th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

ed   January 29th, 2009 4:57 pm ET

Why the shock....? Do people actually think he is a Steelers fan....he's just doing what politicians do...lying and coddling to those who voted for him. Unemployed voters in Rust Belt love Obama too

Gloria   January 29th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Is this not a free nation...anyone should be able to choose what team they want to win without someone saying "he's lost my vote". How completely childish & inmature. Way to go Obama...choose your team. I didn't even vote for you but, you should be able to choose without being put down for making a choice. Freedom of speech...

NOwayman   January 29th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Dear Mr. president i'm from baltimore maryland and i feel you do not support hte weak and the underdog. i therfore say to you on your face you are wrong and uninformed on this one. call candi for inside info on football, stay with basketball sir.
Go Cardinals!

hitobito   January 29th, 2009 4:56 pm ET

Although the Cardinals were destroyed by the Patriots, they have jelled at the right time. No one can contain Larry Fitzgerald! It will be a great game. After what the Steelers did to the Pats, they should win....but I'm not counting out the Arizona Cardinals. Go CARDINALS!

Jeanette   January 29th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

The sloberation continues.

OH YEAH!   January 29th, 2009 4:53 pm ET

Chuck   January 29th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

The best team in one of America's most livable cities, endorsed by the new president. They are sure to lose.

Mark, B'ham., Al.   January 29th, 2009 4:52 pm ET

I like Arizona because it was a good RED County in the election!

billy-bayou   January 29th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

@ Greed is not good:

with your mention of Kurt Werner spacifically, are you possibly suggesting that if we do not follow in the footsteps of the "Great Himself" (obama) we might all be racists. That seems to be the suggestion lately. If we do not agree whit the obama we are biggots.
LAMO!!

TXSteelersFan   January 29th, 2009 4:51 pm ET

Great choice Obama. Hard nosed football for a strong leader. Just ignore 228Rory he's probably a fan of the Dallas Crackwagon. He and the Dallas Gangsters are the biggest terrorist sympathizers.......I mean actual terrorists out there.

Here We Go Steelers!! Soon to be Only 6 time World Champs!

Pat-Pittsburgh   January 29th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

Didn't vote for the man, but even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile.

Watching the game in the White House is gonna be NICE----–

Lauren   January 29th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

Number one, with all the economic problems in this country, why are they even having a Super Bowl? Take all that money that will be spent on ticket sales, advertisments, promotions, ball player salaries, etc etc etc,,, and help the country out. I know a lot of laid of people who would LOVE to get thier hands on the money spent for one stupid football ticket.
Number two,,, who gives a rats tail what Obama think about football?

And last,,, well I think the article says it all,,,, He named all of his supporters from the team that will win,,, think if anyne fromt he Cardinals supported him he would have said different??????

David   January 29th, 2009 4:45 pm ET

I don't care who the President roots for so long as we can get a playoff going in college football. I say this as a Ravens fan as well.

Becky in Indiana   January 29th, 2009 4:44 pm ET

This is one of the first times Obama and I part ways : )

GO CARDINALS!!!

That said, Go Cardinals!

Blue VA   January 29th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

Although I cheer for the NFC, I'm with the Prez on this one.

wil   January 29th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

Yeah right Rush...

I notice you didn't offer this when most of the populace didn't vote for Bush...you had a differing tune.

And supported the big gov't socialist rightwing repblican party to the bitter end of our economy.

Curious   January 29th, 2009 4:39 pm ET

My only comment is, why would anyone comment on this? Maybe mine will be the only one!

matt   January 29th, 2009 4:38 pm ET

Lucieann   January 29th, 2009 4:32 pm ET

I was hoping Obama would say what he said here. He is a terrific diplomat...even when it comes to sports.
