WASHINGTON (CNN) - The Senate Finance committee will meet Monday to review the tax records of former Sen. Tom Daschle, President Obama's nominee for secretary of Health and Human Services who, according to sources, didn't pay taxes on a car and driver he had been loaned.
A Democratic source familiar with the situation told CNN Daschle was loaned a car and driver by a wealthy friend and failed to disclose it on his income taxes, as he should have.
Daschle has since paid what he owed, the source said.
White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said that Daschle had brought the issues to the committee's attention himself and that President Barack Obama said is "confident" he will be confirmed.

Gosh – I loaned my grandson a car – should he be paying taxes for the favor? I paid for the car, and payments and interest and insurance and even "gave him money" sometimes for gasoline.
How nit-picking are the Repukes going to be on their way down the toilet?
99.99999% of Americans would not even believe that you'd have to declare something like that in your taxes.
Daschle evading taxes...why should this surprise us, this is just part of the Democratic culture of corruption: Blagiovich bribes, Spitzer Prostitutes, Geitner tax evasion, Rangle tax evastion, Gov. McGreevy gay affair, Congressman Kennedy DUI, and how bout that democratic congressman with the $100,000 bribe in his freezer, or Clinton and the Mark Rich pardon. When will we learn that the Democrats are as corrupt as the Republicans, maybe even more! This government we have is sad, sad, sad.

Did I miss something here? If he paid the taxes already, what is your problem? Which Republican is it this time? Stop the madness and get these people confirmed. This is the kind of stupid stuff that causes some to lose elections. 2010 is right around the corner.

$100,000 in back taxes NOT PAID and interest, these Dem leaders Obama has selected are ALL crooks, one after another after another. But, whereas Bush sent them packing when anything as slight as hiring an undocumented baby sitter was found, the Dems use a different (and much lower) standard.
I guess it's okay now to not pay any taxes unless and until you get caught. Just remember their line, "Ooops, I'm sorry, I just forgot." We've got lot's of precedence on our side now.
I have the solution:
Abolish the income tax.
Just the beginning of the unraveling. No party is without hypocrisy. When power is consolidated with one party it doesn't take long for the cracks to appear. We will have another close presidential race in 4 years.
This is just an honest, innocent mistake. If you and me do that, it is federally prosecutable offense. So much for change? He is the third guy in three weeks to reveal his innocent mistake.

Shouldn't Daschle, Geitner, and anyone else who doesn't pay their taxes on time or not declare income be forced to resign from government.

He is a member of the inner circle elite, at the top of the pyramid. He is not obligated to pay taxes.
It does not matter whether Daschle paid taxes or not. Obama has to choose him to pay up.
If this were Republicans not paying taxes and abusing the system (Treasury Secretary and now Daschle) we would hang them from the City Walls. Why should we expect less from our new administration?
Failure of a professional to pay taxes properly is _not_ merely a mistake. They know or should knowthey have a duty to either learn the tax law sufficiently to file and pay all that is due or hire another professional to do it. No excuses.

Obama's problem is that the most knowledgeable and qualified people for the Cabinet are human...they had jobs in the industries that gave them the needed knowledge. Is that a lobbyist? It certainly makes one wonder if it's possible to eliminate lobbyists at all.
