LOUISVILLE, Kentucky (CNN) - Kentucky's governor is praising the Obama administration's prompt reaction to the fierce wintry weather that slammed his state.

"They really hit the ground running," said Steve Beshear, interviewed by CNN. "They're working very hard to get all the equipment and supplies here that we need."

Crews have been working to restore power and water service to hundreds of thousands of people. Beshear said that while he realizes "nothing moves fast enough," he said the federal assistance "has been a great help to us so far."

Beshear, a Democrat, explained that when the first wave of bad weather came through on Tuesday and Wednesday morning, officials realized that they needed additional help.

"I called the White House directly at that time. I had my other folks talking to FEMA, but I went straight to the top because we needed fast help," he said.

He said he spoke to the director of intergovernment relations and said she walked Kentucky's paperwork through. He said President Obama called him and told him he was announcing an emergency declaration for the state.

"I can't tell you how appreciative we were," the governor said. "He not only expressed his concern, but he obviously had the Kentuckians in his thoughts and prayers, and he communicated that to us."

Beshear noted that forecasters are warning of another storm front heading to the region early next week.

"If we do, we're putting out that word to the White House and FEMA right now, we're going to need even more help," he said.

It's peculiar how the loyalists from both parties yammer at each other, and cheer like grade scool children for their "side". The independents are going to demand real results, or we'll just "throw thses rascals out" next time – the way we threw out the last group of "rascals". Independents wish the best for the Obama Administration, but "the proof is in the puding"!

i for one am glad to see change. i believe pres. oboma was elected at a time when we the people really need hime. her is doing a lot better than bush ever thought of doing his entire two terms in office. i think pres. oboma is trying to mend a situation that was left to him. give hime a break at least he is trying and showing the people he cares while he is at it.

Carey   January 30th, 2009 6:06 pm ET

I too live in Central KY and I am thankful for all the help my fellow Kentuckians are receiving. It is a blessing having all these crews here to help and I ask all of you to make donations to the Red Cross, Salvation Army and the United Way. Supplies are running low and if there is another storm coming, we will need all hands on deck.

Trees are falling and people are dying from carbon monoxide poisoning. Flooding will soon be a problem as well.

Keep praying and remember, this isn't the time to blame anyone. This is the time to rise to the occasion and help out where it is needed.

Weareallfamily   January 30th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

neither party cares about the people, they care about the votes the people bring.

Allen   January 30th, 2009 6:01 pm ET

All Obama did was sign a piece of paper! Judging by the headline, you would have thought that Obama, Biden, and Rahm went to Kentucky and manned the plows themselves. It's amazing how determined the media is to make this guy (Obama) look good......of course their job will get progressively harder as time goes by.

bbech   January 30th, 2009 5:52 pm ET

Eric S,

Get a clue. Ice in the south is not a good thing. They don't have the equipment to handle it. It's not a big deal up here in the great white north because we have equipment to handle these types of storms. The power goes out here when we get too much ice as well. However, we don't get too much ice because it's usually cold enough to snow.

Denver Dem   January 30th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

And what did you people expect. Obama is the man and he genuinely cares about americans. Unlike the last putz and his klan member buddies who would have let the whole likes of that part of the country freeze to death.

Remember what happened in Katrina, and how much the Republi-KLANS cared at that time.

Observant   January 30th, 2009 5:28 pm ET

Thank You, Obama...What a difference, a government that cares

John in AZ   January 30th, 2009 5:22 pm ET

GOd Bess you folks affected by this brutal weather. I'm prod that our Federal Government is out there looking out for your and your neighbors like they should! Stay warm.

So Cal   January 30th, 2009 5:13 pm ET

The Obama/Biden Administration is fast reacting and swift with its response to helping the people in need and cleaning up the mess. Even in a storm that is not that bad compared to others. Hurricane Katrina was more important than this and the Bush/Cheney Administration did not do ANYTHING until 2 or 3 days after it hit. Obama's efforts affected Kentucky on the same day as the storm and for the next few days as well, out of their own initiative as well!

watcher   January 30th, 2009 5:02 pm ET

And just the other day Obama was cracking jokes that people in the south don't know how to handle snow. What a quick turnaround. Our Pres sure knows his flip from his flop!

Ethan   January 30th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

It's not about big govt or small govt, but GOOD GOVT.

Prez Obama + Dems = Good Govt

Be safe people in KY!

Brian   January 30th, 2009 3:38 pm ET

Obama is proof that the Democratic party IS the party that cares about the people!

Actions speak louder than words - Obama is the best !!

Yes he did !!
:D

Lynn   January 30th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

I live in Central Kentucky and my house (neighborhood) is still without power. With that said, I am very pleased with the reponse of President Obama's administration.

@Erik S.

It's the ICE from the ICE storm, not the snow, that's causing a problem and this ICE Storm has also caused major problems in other states. But thanks for your concern.

Outspoken   January 30th, 2009 3:30 pm ET

IT'S A SNOW STORM! BIG DEAL! IT'S NOT EVEN A BLIZZARD! Once again we have the media promoting Obama's premise that the federal goverment is the answer to ALL problems. If something bad happens in your community, for God's sake, don't take matters into your own hands, don't join with your neighbors and try to solve the problem yourselves. Just sit back and wait for Big Brother Obama (the savior) and the federal government to come and TAKE CARE of you.

Erik S. –You made that comment because you are obviously not in the middle of this storm. I am very happy that we have our electricity back up and running. There are nursing homes that went out of power. There are people dependent upon power for their health (with the fact that it's freezing cold) and you are going to say it's just "a snowstorm, not a hurricane." There may not be as much damage as Katrina, but lives have been saved thanks to the quick response.

I agree with most on this blog. We need to start asking questions as to why the Repubthugcans will not support ways to upgrade and repair our existing infrastructure!

The CSA has lost again   January 30th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Well hes a better man than Bush.Bush would have thumbed his nose at a poor or a blue state.

Rick in WA   January 30th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

And don't even get me started on comparisons between this plan and Bush's. The Bush plan was to support failing financial insitution–vital to our economic recovery. Obama's spend at will plan is nothing but demo/socialist pet projects that will eventually lead to further devaluation of the dollar and will contribute nothing to this countriy's ability to produce competitive goods and services for the world markets.

Arkansas Undertaker   January 30th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

Never ashamed to say that President Obama is MY President. Keep up the good work.

Rick in WA   January 30th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Enjoy it while you can because this horrific spending plan (no stimulus anywhere in it) will go down in history as the greatest blunder in the history of our Republic, taking Obama along with it.

john   January 30th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

I see a lack of comments on Obama admin actually in action...it figures the conservative atttach dogs dont like him to succeed in things

Vicki5   January 30th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Grateful says it best. It's all about whether the president cares or not. President Bush did not care, President Obama does. I wonder if any of the people in KY realize that their Republican officials just voted against any infrastructure investment.

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   January 30th, 2009 2:54 pm ET

After eight years of unresponsive federal government, we finally have people that react quickly.

Ben Malinga   January 30th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

The Federal government knew that storm would hit certain areas. Why weren't they there with relief when the storm hit? After all, the area isn't under water.

Renee from Seattle, WA   January 30th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

thank you mr. president for being just that.. A LEADER CHOSEN BY THE PEOPLE FOR THE PEOPLE!!!! KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!

Mike Buchanan   January 30th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

What, no letting "Brownie" worry about it?

Erik S.   January 30th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

CR in WI, dude, get over yourself. It's a snowstorm, not a hurricane that affected three states. And EC, those grids haven't been updated since Carter. Get real people, your childish hate is pretty sad.

David   January 30th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

Well now we see that leadership does matter. Picking a good team is as in important as who the President is.

CR in WI   January 30th, 2009 2:30 pm ET

No excusees about juristiction and how the goverenor didn't ask for help? Wow this guy might know what he's doing.

So long 8 wasted years under shrubbery

ss   January 30th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

People matter.

EC   January 30th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

THANK you Mr. President. NOW if the Republicans would just explain to their constituents WHY they voted AGAINST updating, repairing and improving the ENERGY GRIDS and ROADS in the mid-west and across the nation.

Grateful   January 30th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

This shows what people who really care about other people can accomplish.

shoegazer   January 30th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

After the debacle that was Katrina, would you expect anything less than
a quick response to any weather related emergency. It's just good that
"Brownie"wasn't in charge.

Pepito the Cool   January 30th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Pro-Obama propaganda on CNN. Obama doesn't care about the people who have to freeze to death in the cold winter. If he did he would support more offshore drilling and nuclearpower to help drive down energy cost. But Obama rather cowtow to the environmental lobby than pursue a common sense energy policy.

Loyal Democrat in MD   January 30th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Contrast this with Katrina...lol

Amber   January 30th, 2009 1:32 pm ET

And THIS ladies and gentlemen is how you expect an administration to respond to a disaster.

All Bush's people could do was make a PowerPoint during Katrina.

Dawn   January 30th, 2009 1:31 pm ET

great President we have.

Once you vote Black   January 30th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

See how Obama even steps up to help people who hate him? If it was Bush Kentucky would be in the darkages before anyone sent a shovel.

cnnnewser   January 30th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Another RED state that hated Obama is now reaping the rewards of his administration.
South Carolina is another – their state is broke and they will gets billions from the stimulus package that every republican voted against.
This is what I call shameful.
