WASHINGTON (CNN) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rang in the new year still saddled with $5.9 million in debts left over from her unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign, according to records filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission.
The nation's top diplomat has been steadily chipping away at unpaid campaign bills since suspending her White House bid in June, when her debt peaked at $25.2 million.
That amount included both $12 million owed to vendors and the $13.2 million she loaned her campaign from personal funds.
Clinton's campaign was unable to repay that personal loan by the time the Democratic National Convention convened in Denver, Colorado, in August, the deadline mandated by the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance law.
The former New York senator has since forgiven the entire loan amount, leaving only the $5.9 million owed to vendors on the campaign's books.

Good!
So sad that anyone would waste that kind of money on a job. Just goes to show how much they expect to gain if elected which makes it even sadder!!!
And let her pay the people she owes. First, if she got out when it became mathematically impossible for her to win, she wouldn't owe that money. And second, she personally has more money than 99% of the people in this country. How does she ethically think it is appropriate to ask people with much less money than her, to pay her debts??? That shows you how morally challenged her and her husband are.
Boo hoo. Poor Hillary!! Put Bill to work, and he can pay it off for you.
Just a shame she's not the President.
I'm keeping high hopes for Obama.
I was a very big financial Hillary supporter in the primary elections. This seems to be the price we pay for democracy in this country. I voted for Barack though because I would never vote for the republicans. The people of Iraq are standing in front of their TV screens cheering US layoffs in the countless thousands. I wonder why ??
If she loaned 12 million of her own money, what's wrong with another 6. Like if that's a lot money for her. Just pay it and get through this annoying news. There are more important news to report.
Oh so typical of the left. The vendors she owes are small business owners who live paycheck to paycheck. Shame on her.
But not to worry. Bill will collect enough cash for her as he sells her influence to forign sources.
Here come the Clinton haters. Yes we know she owes mo ney, She has done the right thing a while ago in not asking for the money she loaned her campaign. Mark Penn will get paid whenever.
welcome to the club..........p.s.you can short sale your home.file a b.k .draw unemployment .dont forget food stamps.welcome to my world! and for gods sake stop sending me those emails begging for money.
Oh boo hoo ...
To bad for poor Hillary. How about all the average americans in debt.Lets feel sorry for them
She better start saving for her next run!!!!
CLINTON 2016!!!!! (or 2012 if Obama messes up!!!)
Why worry? She was paid $8 mil. for her memoir! She still has $2 mi. surplus.
Benny
So let me get this straight. Clinton's $6M debt is owed to vendors? Vendors, many of whom are probably small businesses with families to feed. So what are they supposed to do with their debts? They incurred costs to provide the services to the Clintons and they will be carrying those losses until Clinton pays them. Unfortunately, some of these businesses will end up in bankruptcy because they won't be able to wait long enough to get paid from the Clinton campaign.
Wow, so subtract that from her 109 mil. Can't feel sorry for her when she in her maniacal drive to win wouldn't quit even when the entire world knew she was gonna lose.
Bet ya Geittner and Daschle could give the 67th Secretary of State some pointers on how to "manage" that debt. Wink. Wink.
No need to worry... ol' Bill can get that much from overseas in no time.
She has a good position now and is a member of the good old boys so she'll have no trouble getting that money back. Probably under the table!
SO what. No one put a gun to head and told her to spend herself into debt.
I'm glad I'm not a vendor !!!These are extra tough times to have to finance and" loan" money to someone running for office, that didn't get elected.
Don't worry, Hillary. I'm sure you and Bill will find some sleazy way to exploit your office and coerce organizations and individuals all around the world to contribute to Bill's foundation (slush fund).
ALL THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICERS THAT RECEIVED PART OF THE EIGHTEEN BILLIONS AS BONUSES SHOULD HELP OFFSET HILARY'S OUTSTANDING FUNDS. SHAME ON ALL OF THEM FOR THEIR ACTIONS.
OMG she 's still bellyaching about this debt.......and the Billarys are billionaires !!!!!
I guess she better start having bake sales at the State Department to raise the cash because everyone else has forgotten she even exists
