WASHINGTON (CNN) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton rang in the new year still saddled with $5.9 million in debts left over from her unsuccessful 2008 presidential campaign, according to records filed Saturday with the Federal Election Commission.
The nation's top diplomat has been steadily chipping away at unpaid campaign bills since suspending her White House bid in June, when her debt peaked at $25.2 million.
That amount included both $12 million owed to vendors and the $13.2 million she loaned her campaign from personal funds.
Clinton's campaign was unable to repay that personal loan by the time the Democratic National Convention convened in Denver, Colorado, in August, the deadline mandated by the 2002 McCain-Feingold campaign finance law.
The former New York senator has since forgiven the entire loan amount, leaving only the $5.9 million owed to vendors on the campaign's books.

I do not want to hear about rich Clintons debt,,, PAY YOUR BILL LADY.
No one cares my job has laid off 800 people and I am working only 32 hours a week, and have a mortage, carp payment and health care cost,, HEY CNN,,, want to hear about the blue collar problems int his country,,, not the elite politician who can owes money, when she probaly has that much in the bank to pay it off.
Why don't the Clintons pay their own debts? It's not like Bill hasn't been cashing in on his presidency in a HUGE way. I guess expenses are for little people, not big, important people like the Clintons.
Well, IF it wasn't for Hillary endorsing Obama at the DNC, and evrywhere else, for that matter, BELIEVE ME, HE would NOT be the Curent President, and I think everyone already KNOWS this......

Ridiculous. Politicians born to wealth have no idea how hard us common people work to feed, clothe and educate our families. They can't balance a budget and want to spend OUR money all the time.

I am sure know one else on the blog has a high ratio debt to income, which, but the way, 6 million is trivial to the Clintons net worth.
These same folks logically expect the country's wealthy to pick up the slack and the tab for their short wallets.

The Clintons give a lot of time and money to the betterment of planet earth and the people; their goodwill will find its way back.
Just try and stop her, I dare you!!! She's smart and tough, and she will find away. After all she is a woman and we usually do what we set out to do. Shame on the women who are on her who don't support her , you may not agree with her on everything or issue, (do you agree with your best friend on all) But you still should have supported her for every woman who WILL come behind her, your daughter or grand daughter possibly. For the life of me, though, I've never heard Ms. Clinton make a public statement concerning her campaign debt, and I can't help wonder why some people accuse her of whining about it. Hillary is tough, smart and she and her "sprouce" have money. She'll be just fine.
Welcome to the real world Hillary...Maybe she could ask W for some of his oil friends money, he made them buckets full all while ruining our economy. Surely he knows of someone who made a mint off of us who wants to buy some more influence in the state department.
Mark Penn is the very reason she can't seem to wipe off the last $6M. He really messed her up with inflated invoices for some real mediocre services.

So many complain that President Obama should write a check and pay off the Clinton debt. These people are not versed on campaign finance rules that prevent him from writing a check to pay off her debt. These same rules specify just how monies can be used to pay down debt and the limits to funds solicited and also The Hatch Act governs when the candidate can no longer work directly with their campaign to pay down the debt. There are many rules in place that govern just how funds can and cannot be used to pay down a debt. Before so many complain, maybe they should consider finding out what she and President Obama can and cannot do to pay down her debt.

Why is it that most of the top cabinet member pick by Barack Obama why are they having money problems. 1 Secretary of State is in debt, 2 Secretary of Treasure do not want to pay taxes WOW he is the guy that need ot be over the IRS what a joke, and last but we know not least Secretary for health he is riding around like a rich man and not paying the driver nor any taxes, what a great list of people to pick to help run the world...
