(CNN) – Did Barack Obama take a dig at pop star Jessica Simpson?
A transcription error set the Internet abuzz Monday as viewers debated an off-hand presidential comment about the pop star.
The remark came at the end of the President Obama's interview with NBC Sunday, when interviewer Matt Lauer held up a copy of the latest US Magazine, which features first lady Michelle Obama along with daughters Sasha and Malia. On the left side of the cover was a picture of Simpson, whom the magazine said is in a "weight battle."
Lauer noted the magazine had replaced the president's spot in the family photo with the Simpson headline.
“You got replaced by Jessica Simpson,” Lauer said.
“Yeah, who’s losing a weight battle apparently,” Obama said, according to the network’s interview transcript, sparking a firestorm online. “Yeah. Oh, well.”
But the transcript misquoted the president who visibly only re-read the magazine’s headline that Lauer was holding up - “She’s in a ‘weight battle,’ apparently” - and did not say that Simpson was "losing" that fight.
In the future, the president may opt for safer, less controversial subjects — like government-funded contraception, or the U.S. relationship with Iran.
I am of the opinion that news articles should not have off-hand, sarcastic comments like the last in this article: "In the future, the president may opt for safer, less controversial subjects — like government-funded contraception, or the U.S. relationship with Iran." I would leave sentences like that to The Daily Show or Colbert Report, where comedy (rather than news) is the primary focus.
It is inappropriate for the author to express some opinion through comments like these. It is not an editorial or commentary article.
You've got to be kidding! Come on!
lol I for real thought this was about one of the Simpsons in the cartoon.
Hips ??, In harlem she would be scrawny
I'll take the Presidents thoughts and comments way before anything about Jessica.
You have got to be kidding me..........This headline is worthless.
To all you right wing nut cases commenting on here- Stop trying to make this into something that it isn't. It was a misquotation, I'm sure he regrets saying it. You weirdos are just nit-picking.
To all you left wing nut cases commenting on here- Stop trying to act like Obama is perfect. People make mistakes. I'm sure he'll make more misquotes. who freakin cares???!!! The man is fallable, just like any human-being naturally is. The man isn't omnipotent of omnibenevolent like a majority of you freaks make him out to be.
I love reading all the wacko posts on here. It looks like commentary from Keith Olbermann or Bill O'Reilly. hahahaha.
I love it when people blame the economic crisis on the congress and then try to argue that it is the fault of the people who were in charge of congress the last two years... and now the 12 years before that, or the president at the time. Somehow in your minuscule brains you have decided that it is all the Dem's faults regardless of the reality of the facts or history – good job, you have effectively become a drone.
Oh heck I thought he said something to diss OJ Simpson!! Must be a real slow newsday guys.
Say it like it is.......she is gaining weight . I respect his comment. Finally..someone who is like the rest of us. Say what you think, say what you feel. You go Mr. President!!!
This is a fantastic story from a network totally in the bag for BHO , finally the truth bubbles to the surface.
but seriously, obama obviously loves a woman with curves so i hardly doubt he had anything negative to say about jessica simpson -who is NOT FAT by the way!
Why is this even a story???
What is with the media anymore that they have to try to create some kind of disharmony or tacky story every single day??
Along those lines, I am SO sick of all the doom & gloom, doom & gloom that the media keeps reporting about the economy. I honestly think the media makes the situation worse because they have some people flat scared to death. Media– give it a rest!!! Quit trying to "make" the news all the time.
Obama was misquoted, so what's all the huppla about, the media is just wasting our time with reporting on something like this. It seems to me that all the media cares about these days are insignificate items.
To There is no excuse:
I think you meant to say 01/24/2017.
He better watch out!
Doesn't the President remember how Paris Hilton humiliated John McCain when he got out of line?
Don't mess with celebrities.
CNN, you are not a news organization. I wish for the death of Fox News and CNN everyday.
I knew those that didn't see the headline would think those were his words.
lol... exactly -guy that said "i wouldn't kick jessica out of my bed". i am straight married woman with absolutely no bi curiosities and i'm not sure i'd kick her out of MY bed cause she's so pretty. LOL.
Are you kidding me ?
GIVE ME A BREAK !
Who cares! This is not news! This is for the tabloids at the supermarket's check-out!
And this is news how CNN?? We are facing an ECONOMIC CRISIS and this is ALL THAT YOU CAN COME UP WITH?
WOW THE HEADLESS HORSEMAN REARS IT'S UGLY HEAD!!!
An important and historic headline, like "Obama's first law: The fight for fair pay" gets 84 measly comments. This unimportant, tabloid-like "headline" SO FAR has generated three times as many comments (including mine, I'm another airhead!) Is CNN becoming a tabloid rather than a news outlet? Are they going to post my comment this time, or get it "lost in mediation" as they do most of the time? (Especially when I criticize either McCain or his infamous creations, Palin and the Plumber, somehow my comments are rarely published).
Ha! Just love it when he gets caught displaying his crap attitude toward women....
Remember the campaign against Hillary. I wasn't a Hill fan, but his chauvinistic chicanery was pretty over the top.
I hope he trips all over his lying tongue in the weeks to come.
This president is under more scrutiny than any other in history. If you folks at CNN had given George W. have of this attention, he would have been impeached years ago, for a host of offenses.
Leave President Obama alone to do his job. It's bad enough CNN feels it has to cover celebrities at all, but it might want to stop salivating over everything the president says as though he's Brad/Angelina or a teen pop star.
There is too much media pressure, too much dissection of the president's every word and gesture. Step back and get out of the way so the man can lead.
America snap out of it. Stop reacting to everything this new and dynamic leaders says. Get over yourselves, its a new day.
