President Barack Obama is interviewed by CNN's Anderson Cooper on Tuesday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Barack Obama on Tuesday admitted he made a mistake in handling the nomination of Tom Daschle as his Health and Human Services secretary, saying Daschle's tax problems sent a message that the politically powerful are treated differently than average people.

Watch: Pres. Obama one-on-one

Daschle, the former Democratic leader in the U.S. Senate, withdrew earlier Tuesday as news that he failed to pay some taxes in the past continued to stir opposition on Capitol Hill.

"I think I screwed up," Obama said in an interview with CNN's Anderson Cooper. "And, I take responsibility for it and we're going to make sure we fix it so it doesn't happen again."

It was nice to hear the President take responsibility, but disappointint that the problem occurred in the first place. Oddly, many of the posts on this blog show signs of rabid support for the radical fringes of the 2 main parties. The independents are watching to see if we need to clean house again next time.

yes we can and yes he did   February 4th, 2009 3:06 am ET

Obama has made an error however he has also done a lot as a president without previous executive experience since he has taken office. This is one mistake of many during his first term in office. However I bet that his accomplishments out weight the mistake. President obama is an honest man. Those of you.still on the bush wagon when was the first time you heard him admit to his major errors? Obama maybe from Chicago but he has never once carried himself like a Chicago politic.

A. Darton   February 4th, 2009 12:58 am ET

Eight years we had an arrogent punk in the White House who never admitted he made a mistake. Even after no WMDs were found, he didn't make a mistake by starting a war. In my opinion the people who made the mistakes here were the people who didn't pay their taxes. But more power to the President . We still support you!!

Janice   February 4th, 2009 12:51 am ET

We have not heard an admitance of I screwed up in over 8 years. I don't like the fact that these 3 appointees were not more truthful about paying their taxes, but their lies did not cost the lives of over 4,200 of our sons and daughters like the one about WMD in Iraq. Nor did it result of thousands of people being displaced after Katrina.

Evita Bee   February 4th, 2009 12:45 am ET

Good grief! Just how many prominent political figures are not paying their taxes? PLEASE, would someone do a search! Also, please find out how they get away with it. Thanks in advance.

That's right Obama! Apologize every time you screw up!!!! Only your dumb supporters will purchase your crap!

Jonathan   February 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET

YOU GO MR. PRESIDENT!!! We finally have a leader that DOES NOT mind admitting and owning up to their mistakes. After spending 8 miserable years with an inexperienced "buffoon" that had the attitude of "everything I do is right", it is nice and refreshing to now have a leader that will own up to his shortcomings!

Don't worry about your critics, you just continue doing the GREAT job you are doing and being truthful to the American people!!!

Stay strong, Mr. President................I got your back!!!!!!

Obama is not my Hero   February 4th, 2009 12:40 am ET

Why is Obama still playing damage control on CNN? He is an idiot and now his ignorant fans are going to come out saying, "At least he can admitt his mistake!". At the end of the day, Obama still elected a tax evading secretary of state so he is still saying the people in politics are above the tax laws. Now there, I said it. >-)

What an honorable President. Once again, I admire this Presidents candid ways – he has an incredible ability to keep the trust and do right.

A. Darton   February 4th, 2009 12:39 am ET

First let me say this, why don't these people pay their taxes? Just what is going on here? Now that that is said, let me say this, I still have confidence in President Obama. I knew this would not be easy what he is facing, but I still believe in him. Bush and the Republicans didn't get us into this mess over night, and we won't get out of it over night. It would have been nice if these same Republicans would have stood up to Bush when he was putting this country in this BIG whole. Now all of a sudden everything cost to much, how much has that Iraq war cost us, not only in money, but lives. what about the tax cut to the rich?Whatever Bush wanted they gave him, now this economy is in terrible shape thanks to them. If somebody put me in a hole, I am not going to blame the guy who comes by and try to get me out of that hole, I am blaming the guy who dugged the hole and put me in the whole. Well this mess is Bush mess, and his sidekicks the Republicans.

Dan   February 4th, 2009 12:38 am ET

Do you think you are elected as Mr President to screw up? How can you use such words. You are a disgrace to this greatest nation. You have to be smart enough to govern this nation. Just taking responsibility, it is not good enough. Yesterday you said Daschle should be confirmed 'ABOLUTELY' and today you realized that you have screwed up. Liberals will find you amazing in your acts. Grow up. I am not sure CNN will publish this one because they are also on the liberal side.

barry   February 4th, 2009 12:38 am ET

The liberals will always forgive Obama no matter what and blame Republicans no matter what. Just as what the liberals did to Bush so will the conservatives do to Obama.

I challenge an organization such as CNN to conduct research on the background of every person in high public office, especially those that would confirm a cabinet nominee.

Lets see just how clean everyone really is before they start casting the stone at others.

Obama, you screwed up with Bill Richardson, Tim Geithner, and a whole slew of other things, but the Biggest Screw up has not been exposed yet, but is sure to come and that is You Violated the US Constitutional by running and being Sworn in as US President when you know Dam well you are an Illegal ailen, along with your illegal Aunt, Obama should be jetted off to Prison along with his wife Michelle who knew he was born in Kenya, these folks will do anything to get rich, Please Lawyer Berg, don't let this Corrupted Homosexual get away with this Crime he has commited to our US Constitution, and please make sure his Transvestite wife go to jail with him, and make sure she is placed in a male prison, as she was born a male and in a woman shadow. what a joke they have played on this great Country. Americans, please wake up and smell the coffee, Let's IMPEACH THIS CROOK.

Pat in IL   February 4th, 2009 12:30 am ET

Obama stands behind the "the buck stops here" principal, and his accountability is refreshing. Daschel is probably still the best pick for the HHS, talent-wise, but Washington is in such dire need of change from the old entitlements, etc. that every single one of them needs to be clean as a whistle, and examples of accountability have to be made. Hopefully, we'll get some of the "good old boys club" mentality out of there and get some genuine public servants in.

Jaison From NYC   February 4th, 2009 12:28 am ET

If anyone wants to run for any office in USA at any level, they should check their back ground in every election. if they find any red flag then that person should get kicked out......so from their we will know they are clean.

Most of you Obama voters were likely too young to know how horrible the Carter years were. Sadly, I think you're about to find out.

huge sigh of relief   February 4th, 2009 12:20 am ET

Sir, you are leaps and bounds above your predecessor – thank you for the humility you displayed in admitting you made a mistake. You have done in two weeks what Bush wasn't able to do in eight years, which is earn my respect.

Jeff   February 4th, 2009 12:18 am ET

Tom Daschle is very partisan and was obviously a disappointment to his constituents as a senator. I'm surprised that Obama's transition team didn't see him as a disappointing politician as well. I look forward to Obama's presidency, but this choice was a huge disappointment. I'm glad he's out.

Nathaniel   February 4th, 2009 12:16 am ET

The president did the right thing owning up to this 'mistake'. For those who have issue with him, i have this to say: when you point a finger, the others point back at you. Criticize constructively or just keep quiet!

Claire   February 4th, 2009 12:07 am ET

Obama is an inexperienced and weak leader who is clearly out of his depth.
How immature and un-presidential to use the phrase " I screwed up ".
This is only the start , more politicians will be exposed as cheats and liars who are abusing their positions.
High time to remind them that they have been elected to serve the public and not themselves.

Roofin Reality, Houston, Tx.   February 3rd, 2009 11:54 pm ET

It's certainly a disappointment in having key people have the same type of problem, so much so that they have to withdraw.
But I take exception the feeling that the tax cheats will keep us from fully arming our troops at war.
I think it was Rummy and Cheney who helped position the Decider to go into an unnecessary and costly war. A war so costly that Rummy and team wouldn't send the right equipment over to Iraq.

Like I teach my kids – take responsibility for what happened, apologize, offer up (if required) the changes you'll make so it doesn't become a repeat issue and then move on.

bluebird   February 3rd, 2009 11:52 pm ET

Yeah, he "admits he screwed up." So Presidential. Let's see how long he keeps that up.

I'll see if his technique works with my boss when I make mistakes.. I'll be just like Obama and say Boss, I admit I screwed up and take full responsbility. My boss will say, you've said that too many times...your fired.

Perusing-Through   February 3rd, 2009 11:51 pm ET

DEFINE ACCOUNTABILITY: = = President Obama taking responsibility for two failed nominations.

Give Obama credit for "Man'ning Up". However, during Bush 8-years he never took responsibility or ownership for any of the following he caused or allowed:

1.) Two unending wars, Iraq & Afghanistan
2.) 4,200+ dead U.S. Servicemen, 37,000+ wounded, 100,000+ mental issues
3.) 95,000++ Iraqi civilian collateral deaths; 4,000,000++ Iraqis displaced
4.) Unresolved Iranian nuclear weapons
5.) Escalated tension between nuclear Pakistan & India
6.) No peace arbitration between Palestinians and Israelis
7.) Cuba/U.S. relations still frozen
8.) Russian nuclear ships parked off Chavez's Venezuelan coast
9.) Expanding genocide in Africa
10.) Escalation of drug wars, kidnappings, and killings from Mexico
11.) Broken immigration policy remains with 20-million Illegals
12.) Ice caps melting and still no climate change policy
13.) National economic meltdown
14.) Financial market credit disaster
15.) American auto-manufacturing debacle
16.) Skyrocketing unemployment
17.) Disastrous Cheney energy policies
18.) Disastrous home foreclosures nationwide
19.) No affordable insurance coverage
20.) Investments, pensions and retirement losses
21.) Deepening national debt
22.) Unaffordable education
23.) Lost international credibility
24.) Inefficient fed agencies like FEMA, FDA, EPA, and CDC
25.) Hemorrhaging of jobs to overseas slave labor.

How many more liberals are out there that can't pay their taxes? Ed Wilson   February 3rd, 2009 11:37 pm ET

None of you understand what is really going on. It is not about Republicans or Democrats. It's not about the "Right" or the "Left". Bush and Obama are both front men working for the same people who control our government. If Obama's agenda is all about change, then why are the same people who are members of the Trilateral Commission, the World Bank, the Federal Reserve, Wall Street and Council on Foreign Relations being appointed to key positions in Obama's administration? I urge American's to take a few moments to research where these appointees are coming from and prove it to yourself.
It's time we all wake up to what is really going on... and join together as American's who love our country. The power elite and New World Order has stolen our country right out from under our noses while we were preoccupied with watching football, American Idol and reading the tabloids. We need to get off our butts, help wake others up to the truth and take our country back from these criminals. If we don't, America is destined to become a third-world nation. And when our children and grandchildren ask us why we did nothing to save America, we will have to tell them that it just wasn't important to us

John McCain, the "maverick" shows what a maverick really is, unstable and unpredictable. He will say whatever will bring attention to him. If the Republicans care about this country they will stop their sour grapes screaming and get busy helping the President craft an appropriate stimulus package that most can be happy with. Tom Dashcle should be ashamed of himself, but of course he has no shame. The nerve of the man, fully knowing that he cheated the government and the american people, and then went ahead and accepted the nomination?? And what were the Obama vetters thinking after finding out about his tax evasion, to still let him thru? and what was President Obama thinking when he did not immediately rescind his nomination instead publicly giving him his support? Now I know why rich people pay less taxes.. they know all the loopholes and they just plainly omit reporting all their earnings.

Marianne   February 3rd, 2009 11:20 pm ET

This is the reason you do not elect someone that has no experience. His mistake is being arrogent and saying yesterday he stands behind this pick. He only admitted a mistake when Daschel resigned. This does not show any leadership. A leader would have asked him to stand down. This has happened 3 times ,at least, in his cabinet picks and not once did this man step up and ask these people to resign. And he talks about being integrity to his administrationl I'm sorry Mr. Obama but if this is your idea of integrity your better go back to the dictionary and look up the word. The American people were duped by a slick talker who could give a speech. All fluff and no substance and you bought it hook, line and sinker.

Why is obama letting the press dictate to him. He didn't screw up on the Daschle appointment. He picked a good guy for the job. The people who should have investigated Daschle's background are the ones who made the mistake.

What obama should do is say he would like so and so for the job and tell his committee to do their job and investigate. Our new politics = the young being led by the stupid! Oh and don't let us forget the media acting as the cheering section while the great sucking sound of our jobs going plays in the background. The Press is responsible for his election and they need to demand that Giethner step down . if all the people around Obama and in Washington paid thier taxes like the rest of us have to We the People would probably have a govt surplus right now and no worries how about the IRS starts doing it's job and auditing everyone making a million or more I bet we wouldn't need a stimulus bill huh?

Annette   February 3rd, 2009 11:08 pm ET

All of the politician are only out for themselves, no matter if the American people are able to live, there should be no one in this country who should be hungry or without a job, but theses so called people who is suppose to look out for us only look out for them selves. The American people should decide when they should get a raise or what type of benefits they should receive. They work for us!!!!! When will stand up and say this is enough. Our government has no back bone if they were not getting paid and all of the other perks they would not even want to be in the government. While we struggle to make a living they are enjoying life. And we are paying them for lying to us and they are stealing they should have to go to jail if it was you or me they would waste the money and send us. We have got to stand up and take our country back.

The state of the United States of America requires that we dry are tears, repel our shame and move on. The people have experienced Law maker and enforcement that had been in the majority that did not severed the people. Elected official are elected to do the peoples biding and can not take the attempts by other elected officials to make America a closet Monarchy to heart.
Lean but not to the bone! It is not personal so dry your eyes. It is about who we are and who they are. It is about we the people in order to form a more perfect union. It is not about separation by any means or by any majority. You are very serious about we the people but remember that we the people are individuals with different thoughts and frames of mind and remember that we the people have minds too. Righting a wrong is a good thing but inventing a wrong is just as bad as causing one

Mr. Obama, you did the right thing, even though it was not your fault. This "transparency" thing is really running it's course. This is the first time I believe that we, the people, had so much to say about everything since everything is so transparent.

Before, everything was hid, we knew nothing, unless we read one national enquirer or one of the other gossip magazines. So now that things are transparent, things are going to be revealed even more.

2 weeks in this presidency and seems like the old usa is being ripped at the seams again. We are still so divided and it scares me!

Joe   February 3rd, 2009 10:56 pm ET

Look, if I failed to pay $140,000.00 in taxes the IRS would have put a lien against everything I own. They did that to my sister 20 years ago and locked up everything she had until she sat down with them and came to a settlement. Do the "politically affluent" get special treatment...you bet!!!

Here's my take. Daschle wouldn't have paid it if he didn't get the lights on him for the nomination. He like the other Obama nominees who have had their tax problems laid out are smart people with smart CPAs to help them out. How did they make a mistake. One of two reasons: Daschle thought they could beat the system; or the system, aka the tax code, is too confusing for even the experts!

I think Daschle tried to play the system and I think the tax codes are too confusing for even the tax "experts." Daschle got what he should have for trying to beat the system and the tax codes have got t go!!

Obama could have made excuses that he did not personally vet Daschle and the rest of the cabinet members. He didn't. Instead, for the first time since JFK, we see a president admit to the American people that he screwed up! That's a breath of fresh air indeed. The Republican detractors can go to hell.

Tom   February 3rd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

Amazing to see so many cheering for Obama admitting to his mistake...when all else fails! He stood firmly behind this nominee, as he did all the other bad choices. Face the facts – President Obama made his way through two years in the senate voting "present" – he doesn't make decisions, he makes speeches.
If admitting mistakes is so impressive to all of you, how about admitting you made a mistake when you elected him?

Monica   February 3rd, 2009 10:49 pm ET

You know, people really need to get real and get serious. We as a nation are far to grumpy and quick to place blame to entertain ourselves. This is ridiculopus. I support our President and the ones that he felt would best serve in his cabinet. If you could find me 5 folks in office that son't have something that they would like to hide during a vetting process, I would be amazed. In fact, the only reason why this stuff came out like it did is because they are trying to be so transparent.

Hammer   February 3rd, 2009 10:48 pm ET

Obama promised CHANGE!
HE said he was different!
He is not any different than all the corrupt politicians he said that he was going to save us from. He says he made a mistake and would do better the next time. He has used the same song and dance routine every time he is caught in lie.
It is about time that we were honest and admitted that he is just like all the others, a politician with an agenda, that will tell you what you want to hear and play the same old games!

Marty   February 3rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

What have we learned here? Maybe Obama can pickup a side job working for the IRS by picking people to audit. Maybe the IRS should spend a little more time auditing people in high places. Infact, we can use this to help cover the cost of the stim package.

Ed   February 3rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

Chalk that up to a lack of experience? What ya gonna "screw up" next?

You all should have voted for McCain.

SueB   February 3rd, 2009 10:44 pm ET

I continue to be amazed that so many people who post on these forums live with such hatred every day of their lives. This hatred totally consumes their beings and blinds them to facts or any reality. Obama was 100% behind Daschle, until it became politically expedient to not be. Typical politics. Obama acknowledged he screwed up, refreshing and definitely not typical politics.

What is there to transition? Idiots from one side of a room to another?

Oh Please   February 3rd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

Why do they refer to Daschle's "tax problems?" Was he being investigated or audited by the IRS? Were they going to take his property or garnish his lobbying paycheck? What problems? The man amended his returns in time, I guess, so everything's legal. But would he have amended his return if he hadn't been nominated?

See Thru.   February 3rd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

I'm already over it.

Screw up on something major, then I might hold a grudge.

ObamaGirl08   February 3rd, 2009 10:42 pm ET

I love to see Republicans throw temper-tantrums! This will be a very enjoyable 8 years. Apparently it's better to make mistakes and then lie about it then to admit. This wasn't even that big a deal....compared to Bush's mistakes! No one died here....

erin   February 3rd, 2009 10:39 pm ET

very disturbing WAKE UP PEOPLE.

Stunned   February 3rd, 2009 10:38 pm ET

Let me say first I voted for Barack Obama. I believed him. He appealed to mine and other people's dreams of justice and true democracy. He told them to hope again, to stop being cynical. If it turns out he is Lucy holding the ball for Charlie Brown then he will in my opinion have become as despicable or more so than George Bush. If this is calculated, then the man is a bigger monster than Cheney. You at least knew where Cheney was coming from. And Bush was too stupid to know any better.

It's time to stop patting our President on the back because he's good at admitting mistakes. We cannot afford to continue thinking things like "he's not half as bad as Bush," or smile and say it's "refreshing" because he admits to failing to even check somebody's tax returns before nominating him. Worse than that are Daschle's connections to the medical industry itself. I can see having some experienced Washington people around to pilot the waters. But where are the outsiders? The free thinkers? We might as well have elected Hilary Clinton.

Hammer   February 3rd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

All the Dems can say is he is as good as the Repubs.
He said he was going to be different. He is not . He said he would bring CHANGE, but he is the same, a politician that will tell you what ever you want to hear and still play the same old game. It is time you were honest with yourself and admit that he is the same old politican as all the others and he has a self serving agenda.

Geitner Is Also a Tax Cheat and Should Resign   February 3rd, 2009 10:37 pm ET

Hey....if you'll admit it regarding Daschle, why won't you get rid of Geitner? The Sec of the Treasury himself also admitted to cheating on his taxes.

Don't be a hypocrite on Geitner. Daschle rightfully withdrew. It's time for Geitner to also look for the door.

No Hillary = No Obama   February 3rd, 2009 10:35 pm ET

Obama, the screw-up. Is that what he's going to say if we have another terrorist attack, if the stimulus package just stimulates pork, if the economy sinks deeper into recession. Maybe he should stop giving interviews to Matt Lauer and Anderson Cooper so he is constantly in the public eye and start leading. The "screw-up" has to do with rewarding the admirers, not the people who should be chosen regardless of their adulation for Obama.

Dennis, Amarillo Texas   February 3rd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

So, another opportunity for all the "Bush Bashers" to come out and howl about Bush, becuase Obama "lied" when he said he wouldn't appoint Lobbyist and Tax Cheats. CNN Comments are sooo boring! It is just another Democrat Propaganda Rag. 911 was the result of plans made under Democrat Clinton, since nothing was done while it was planned during 1999 and 2000 to protect America from Terrorist, and now we can sit back and let Obama do nothing about it now. CNN and all the blind Bush critics can write their smut all they want to. Who cares?

Spartacus   February 3rd, 2009 10:33 pm ET

Finally an elected official that can admit he screwed up. And to that fool for a President that just left office... this is something he was too arrogant and stubborn to ever do. A coward with no guts GWB was!

Penn Voter   February 3rd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Yes, you screwed up. But we knew that already, why did it take you so long to figure it out? A cabinet of tax evaders? If you are saying that these were the best picks, then the rest of your party must be a bunch of crooks.

GWC   February 3rd, 2009 10:32 pm ET

Bush and Cheney never made any mistakes right? All of their policies are working just fine aren't they. Bush and Cheney managed to uphold our moral standing in the world right? All the wealth transferred to the top tier is really making America better right? They're using all that money to create 1000s of jobs every week right? NO Mistakes there... I haven't heard any ownership of the decisions that have us in this predicament.

Daschle screwed up – he's outta here – and we move on.

and Joe Paleface – if the Libs are so "stupid"then ditch your social security – let your kids pay their own way thru school instead of taking financial aid

Screwing up is relying on faulty "intelligence" to wage war on Iraq. Screwing up is letting people suffer and die in Katrina. Screwing up is ignoring alerts that terrorists were in the US and learning how to fly – not land – planes ...

Yes, we can see the Change!!!

Paul from Kissimmee   February 3rd, 2009 10:25 pm ET

To everybody who says it's great that he admitted making a mistake. Doen't anybody realize that he was defending the tax cheat until the public spoke out? He's not a leader. He just watches the polls to make decisions. If only he could've voted present.

ron levine   February 3rd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

While i am glad to see Mr. Obama admit his mistake, i am concerned about his recent lack of judgement in his admistration vetting process. Those words of Mrs. Clinton during the primary keep resonating, "Rhetoric is one thing, reality and experience is quite another" I hope for all our sakes she isn't right.

Scott, Tucson   February 3rd, 2009 10:24 pm ET

How about his other screwed up picks? Boy it's going to be a long four years with him running things.

Layoffthekoolaid   February 3rd, 2009 10:20 pm ET

Only 10 days in office and already making mistakes. All of you who say it's a breath of fresh air to see a President admit he made a mistake are as weak as the president. That isn't on the job training. And don't say he's being honest with us by admitting the mistake. How about the lobbyist that he said would not work in the White House. I guess he's just stretching the truth there.

*******************************
Julie, Bravo!

You nailed it on the head!
******************************
You have only to look at whose talking to the media everyday, to find the problem "children" (McConnell, Boehner, Cantor-now McCain) How quickly they forget that Bush was surrounded by a slew of crooks, who did far worst than not pay taxes on time (the three being persecuted have already paid the taxes in question). Take "Scooter" Libbey, who lied under oath – perjury. He was Chief of Staff to the VP. Tom Delay was accused of money laudering. Claude Allen, a WH advisor, was caught shoplifting. The biggest crime being the fraudulent thesis for war, drafted by Bush and Cheney. And Republicans have the gall to be up in arms about "taxes."

I agree with everyone who believes that we should all pay our taxes, and the rich are not excluded. But to start a raindance on these individuals, when some in their party have done so much worst is absurd. Here they go again; Sen. "The fundamentals of the economy are fundamentally sound" McCain, along with his sidekick Palin, have hired people to do their research and writing, so that they come out sounding intelligent and "in the loop." But only those in their base are gullibly impressed. Everyone else realizes that they're perpetrating a fraud. I pray God's intervention on the deceitful antics of the opposition party.

Peace.

President Obama is exactly what this country needs right now. He is the leader for whom we have looked. He is the best President in recent history, and I have no doubt that he'll be one of the best, if not the best, President we've ever had. He stands head and shoulder above the previous occupant of the office in intellect and humility. President Obama, the Commander in Chief, will achieve great things. I feel that I can say these things because he has inspired our hope, and that is what makes him a truly great leader. He will make mistakes, and his humanity will be painfully obvious at times, but he will guide us through these difficult times to a new day and a new age. He'll do it, because his leadership will inspire us to get behind him and take action. Even if some decide not to go along, we cannot be deterred. We shall overcome.

NOT THE KINDA GUY TO SAY I TOLD YOU SO, BUT I TOLD YOU SO   February 3rd, 2009 10:16 pm ET

All the robots think if yoou say you made a mistake your excused, give me a break. Is this the new era of accountability and resposibility, admiting to a mistake only when your caught. Bush might have lied but porkbama has yet to tell the truth. So say it with me kiddies 'republican congress in 2 years and porkbama is a one term wonder. yeti   February 3rd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

what you narrow minded, pin-heads fail to see is the larger implications of these revelations from Daschle, et al. It is not about admitting a mistake or not. These stories scare off qualified people from running for office knowing that their backgrounds will be ripped apart for the slightest infraction. And any nominee now that turns down an appointment or withdraws their name is immediately branded as being a tax-cheater. Remember, bad news and sensationalized news sell, so the incentive is there for the media to vilify anyone in the public eye. But really, how can you NOT know a car and driver are taxable income?! An honest mistake? Hardly. He got caught red handed while the rest of us honestly try to follow the tax laws and live in fear of the IRS.

HC   February 3rd, 2009 10:09 pm ET

How long did it take Bush to admit a mistake? The right wing slime will climb all over this. I really hope that post partisanship will become a wave of the future. The Republicans have pointed out waste in the 'rescue plan'. much of it is correct. If I'm right, Obama will admit some of it is garbage and cancel the excess. THIS is bi-partisanship

It's just funny how now nobody on this blog is using the 4 letter word since the January 20. I R A Q

It's amazing how an article where President Obama does the right thing (Senator Daschle too) and takes ownership of this situation turns into a Bush bashing session. The tried and true liberal motto: "We're not happy until you're not happy."

Sorry lefties, it's your turn. You control the White House and both houses of Congress. This one is yours.

Do you think you are elected Mr President to screw up? How can you use such words. You are a disgrace to this greatest nation. You have to be smart enough to govern this nation. Just taking responsibility, it is not good enough. Yesterday you said Daschle should be confirmed 'ABOLUTELY' and today you realized that you have screwed up. Liberals will find you amazing in your acts. Grow up. I am not sure CNN will publish this one because they are also on the liberal side.

Albo58   February 3rd, 2009 9:58 pm ET

indiana voter   February 3rd, 2009 9:54 pm ET

For those of you who are happy to hear a President say he screwed up, you might want to get used to hearing it a lot from this President. We are only in the first couple of weeks and he is already looking weak to the rest of the world, not to mention here at home. This has been a horrible week for the Obama administration, and it is only Tuesday. He is trying "diplomacy" with Iran. Iran calls him weak as a result and says this is a sign that Capitalism is a failure. Change we can believe in.

G.R.   February 3rd, 2009 9:53 pm ET

The disgruntled can continue to rant. Who cares? An admission of a mistake will hopefully be followed by avoidance of this type of mistake in the future. for the past eight years, there was no honesty or admission of guilt. Bush went out claiming he did a good job during Katrina. Soooooooo griping conservatives, President Obama has eight more years of possible mistakes before the Bush years are even equaled. He is man enough to admit a screw-up, which is why I voted for him!

Lost in Texas Forever   February 3rd, 2009 9:53 pm ET

I thought President Obama was supposed to be the DECIDER!!!!...

OOPS my bad that was the other guy. It just seems stange to have a president actually admit he made a mistake while he's IN office and not when he's about to leave. And I'm sure the far right will be happy to hear he's gonna make more mistakes before he's done since they are waiting with baited breath for him to do so.

theresa   February 3rd, 2009 9:52 pm ET

Obama didn't "screw up", he got caught. His agenda, his choice. The leader of the free world making this many
mistakes this soon is remarkable. Mr Obama has every resource at his fingertips to do his job and do it well. This is just plain old ignorance on his part. He had all the answers a very short time ago – now what ...pull another rabbit out of the bag

Sheesh, everybody Bush ever appointed was a frikking crook, and republicans think they've got something to hold over Obama with THIS?!?!

Puhlease.

Whatever, CNN won't post this anyway.

Actually you are just a little right with that remark of yours. There are three things that are predictable in every post dealing with President Barak Obama:
- People who will praise him for whatever he does or says
- People who will bash, smear and diminish him no matter what
- Conservatives that will introduce themselves as 'Independents', 'former Democrats', 'Democrats that voted Republican last year' or 'Ashamed Obama Voters'.
Yes some blogs are 'dominated' by 'pro-Obama' posters but some are by 'Anti-Obama' posters as well.
As for the fact concerning this blog; it was great that he admitted a mistake, but a PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA saying 'screwed' in public? There were other words...

CNN don't 'moderate' this post please...

John Brown   February 3rd, 2009 9:47 pm ET

Billy-Bayoo,

Bush did nothing to help the American people in 8 years of being President. What did we get under Bush? A war, $4.50 gas, a crumbling infrastructure, unemployment and a failing economy....wait, we got terror alert red or is it blue now? no it's orange. Give me a break...We have a new President who’s been in office for 2 weeks and you want to lay all the blame on him. When has a vetting process gone smooth? with no one being questioned for something they’ve done? It’s going to happen, get over it. At least he’s man enough to say it’s my fault and we will do better, he's taken ownership BECAUSE HE IS THE PRESIDENT...YOURS AND MINE. And we all better get behind him Step up or shut up!

Mr. Obama, I am glad you are man enough to own your mistakes. The previous president just denied everything and lived in a state of denial. In this case, I respect you for your ability to say you've made a mistake, and as a human you are entitled to make them! Of course, we've seen your quality and know you are a man that learns from his mistakes. Keep going Sir! We are praying for your success, because your success means we are successful as a nation as well.

just saying...   February 3rd, 2009 9:45 pm ET

Just have to point out about former Sen. Daschle: Stupid, stupid mistake, and he should have seen it coming, but he has done a world of good for so many everyday people throughout his career.

And as for Obama's mistake, at least no Americans have bled and died as a result.

having a complete and thorough vetting process is elementary level staff work and should be expected for any high level political appointee...how did this fall through the crack not once, but four times now???

like the old addage goes...you get what you voted for

Ken P.   February 3rd, 2009 9:37 pm ET

If anyone reads this and doesn't remember the Jimmy Carter presidency, this is kind of how it started. Republicans were run out of town, the economy was horrible, and the Democracts were in control of everything. Four years later, Ronald Reagan became the first actor-president and the rest is history.

Obama 2.0   February 3rd, 2009 9:31 pm ET

President Obama is a quick study and is man enough to own up to his mistakes in a clear concise way, unlike most egotistical type A's that have walked the halls of congress and the White House. It does my heart good to see real leadership at the helm. The Dems & Gop in congress should take notes and quit playing politic games with the stimulus pkg.
Clean it up, take the junk out and find more real infrastructure projects and find tax cuts that produce jobs. not all projects are created equal and not all tax cuts are created equal as we can see from the last eight years.

We, the people need to help our president knock some heads in congress. We need to e-mail our congress people, blog talk about it with friend, etc

I want Dems to take out stuff that is not going to save or produce jobs and take care of our childrens education. The other programs can be addressed at a later date.

I want Republicans to work with Dems and insist on good positive changes that give the bill a better ballance/diversity of ideas that will produce jobs. I will not accept Republicans blocking and voting no, get in there and insist on good changes and accept some compromise. But simply voting no is weak and will be rejected by the American people.

A clue: Everyday in America people all over the country go to work and get the job done, we don't go to work and vote no and go home with a paycheck. WE MAKE A WAY WHERE THER IS NO WAY. Congress MUST do what we do. Congress MUST MAKE A WAY WHERE THER IS NO WAY. That is the job description and if you cannot handle it then get out of the way before you are moved out of the way. we don't care about partys. In the work place there is one party, America. we are Americans first an all in the same party, so git-er-done!!!

Rob Stumpf   February 3rd, 2009 9:30 pm ET

Please. Every time Obama opens his mouth and talks about something other than his political career, he says something stupid.

1) He's all for public education, but of course his kids go to private schools.

2) He said he was for change, and presents to us a bill filled with nothing but traditional pork.

3) He said we were going to change the way Washington operates, and he broke his own lobbying rules almost immediately.

4) He supposedly for higher ethics, but so many of his appointment choices have tax problems.

5) A few days after his Presidency started, he insulted Washingtonians by telling them they were wimps for closing schools during a storm.

6) He made the hare-brained proposal that we should have a national college playoff! We need HIM to figure that one out?

7) He built up Rush Limbaugh, while meaning to tear him down.

8) His arrogant "I WON" nonsense in part caused every single House Republican to vote against the stimulus.

9) His administration's response to the storms in Kentucky was appreciated only by Democrats in Kentucky who can say nothing else. It stunk.

10) Caring about himself only, he keeps saying how bad things are, which makes investors even more nervous than they need to be. That might be good politics for him, not so great for anyone else. FDR would be rolling in his grave.

Can't wait until he's gone. Seriously. It's only going to go downhill from here.

Proud American   February 3rd, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Republicans are such Idiots, they and their president made a mistakes for the past 8 years that cost Americans trillions. Move on

ROnan   February 3rd, 2009 9:29 pm ET

Up here in Canada we would just love one ounce of your President's candid in your face honesty. Have faith America this man is for real.

Missy   February 3rd, 2009 9:28 pm ET

To all the posters who say this is making Bush look better all the time, just one word: Really??

tiffany in ohio   February 3rd, 2009 9:28 pm ET

all you haters lets hear Bush come out an say he screwed up. the best part about this is Obama did nothing wrong, he didn't get thousands of people killed in a dumb war for oil, he himself didn't cheat on his taxes, he didn't torture, an better yet he didn't run the US into the ground. So haters hate on I love my POTUS

Jan Illinois   February 3rd, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Glad to see he's able to admit a mistake but I don't understand how on earth this kind of thing keeps happening, do any of these people do anything right, let alone paying taxes. The first question during the vetting should be , what are you hiding, lets go from that point from now on.

Bipartisanship   February 3rd, 2009 9:26 pm ET

Good for Obama for admitting his mistakes. He is a breath of fresh air after BUSH, BLAGO, DASCHEL and other members of BOTH PARTIES who are crooks.

Partisans don't give us your lines of B.S. Thre are just as many crooks in both parties. If the Dems screw up we'll kick them out just like we did the Repubs.

America rules over party B.S.

WE HAD A "PERFECT" PRESIDENT FOR 8 YEARS, WHO

PUT THE WORLD ON FIRE & US IN THE POOR HOUSE.

WE HAVE A GREAT CHANCE WITH THIS ONE.

Diane Dagenais Turbide   February 3rd, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Finally, A President that is capable of being honest and expressing to us that he screwed up and he does not wait eight years before telling us or it does not take him eight years before he realizes that he screwed up!! Now that's change we can believe in...!

Julie   February 3rd, 2009 9:25 pm ET

Debby February 3rd, 2009 8:30 pm ET

We cannot afford to have a President so inexperienced. He doesn't have enough work experience not alone government experience. We are in a crisis and Mr. Obama does not have the capacity to lead at this time. It scares me to hear him say he screwed up. Not a thing a leader should say.
___
I hope this post is your attempt at sarcasm – because if it's not, it's downright scary! Never admitting mistakes means never learning from them.

Peel yourself off the ceiling Debby – time for a reality check. McCain still probably thinks the fundmentals of the economy are strong! I can't imagine where we'd be if McCain were president. You want to talk weak – McCain was the walking talking definition of it – he didn't have the conviction to stick with his principles from one campaign stop to the next.

FINALLY, a President that will admit when they are wrong! I was very troubled by the appointment of Daschle. Not so much because of the taxes (although that did concern me) but because of his close ties with medical companys.

Thank You President Obama!

Democrat from PA   February 3rd, 2009 9:24 pm ET

Let's see, he's been President, for what 10 days?? And he choose 4 people who didn't pay their taxes?? Nice. Tell that to all the military folks out there when we don't have enough money to buy them the proctective armor they need.

WOW! A President that admits fault? Thats a first! Nice job B.O. you got mad cool points for that act of humility. Now learn from it and don't let it happen again!

30m-Democrat-voted Clinton then McCain   February 3rd, 2009 9:19 pm ET

Ana,

The only reason he admitted to screwing up on the Daschle appointment was because of the withdrawl. If Daschle didn't withdraw his nomination Obama would have stuck behind Daschle 100% and the man would have been confirmed. Notice Obama said he screwed up not in the appointment process but in the delay to having a HHS secretary. He still believes Daschle was the right guy.

tgsaad   February 3rd, 2009 9:18 pm ET

It is really refreshing to have a government official to admit a mistake. This is a nice change. May be some other politicians will learn that it's okay to do so. It is a sign of strength not weakness.

Chris   February 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Brace yourself for the flood of supportive posts about Obama's admission. This blog is so overwhelmingly liberal (myopically liberal) and so predictable that it's actually getting pretty boring to read.

Question: does anyone know of a good newsservice whose blogs are actually unbiased? I'm honestly seeking one. CNN's blogs all kind of fall under the banner: Liberal Automaton Blog

JB   February 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Compared to the bush admin, folks like Daschle are choir boys. Obama did right and admitted mistakes, something bush could never acknowledge. Intelligence and humility in a President – very respectable, and a very welcome change.

Ray Fisher, Albuquerque, NM   February 3rd, 2009 9:17 pm ET

Why doesn't Obama let Rahm vet his cabinet nominees and take out the trash like a good chief of staff??? Lordy, just interviewing with Rahm would make me confess crimes I hadn't comitted!!!

KLS   February 3rd, 2009 9:16 pm ET

How refreshing to have our president admit a mistake! Looks like the "buck" will stop at Obama's desk. Bush still can't admit to his mistakes especially about invading Iraq where we have lost almost 4300 amazing men and women in uniform based on false data.

Chip Mitchell   February 3rd, 2009 9:15 pm ET

Pres. Obama did a good thing in admitting he goofed in not getting Tom Daschle adequately vetted, but his contention that he didn't want the public to perceive that there are two standards regarding complying with tax laws is suspect when you consider the new Sec. of Treasury's record. Obviously, expedience and ego trump integrity if you perceive you have enough political capital to survive a "goof". Maybe if Alberto Gonzalez had done an "aw shucks, I goofed" today, then Campbell Brown might have been satisfied with just a few scratches across his face instead of the pound of flesh she seemed so determined to exact. Certainly didn't see her going after the new Treasury Sec. with that kind of venom. So much for "No Bias, No Bull"

God Help us   February 3rd, 2009 9:15 pm ET

DEBBY____ who are you Kidding, you were always a republican. Saying you are a democrat that voted republican this year after what all went down WHATEVER!!!!!!!!!

Dr. G   February 3rd, 2009 9:14 pm ET

President Obama-
No you did NOT screw up. Mr. Daschle had to bow out to avoid unnecessary media coverage. I have never seen a newly elected President do so much for the people in such a short time and allow for such an open process to review candidates. It's refreshing, and I am mature enough to know that people are not perfect-this includes the BACK SEAT DRIVERS who spew hate from behind their laptops. Keep up the good work! I and many others have your back!

30m-Democrat-voted Clinton then McCain   February 3rd, 2009 9:14 pm ET

This is exactly why I voted for Clinton and McCain. I wanted someone with experience, not someone who will get on-the-job training.

Bob   February 3rd, 2009 9:14 pm ET

Now there's something you don't see often: A President who's willing to admit he's made a mistake. Even when he messes up, Obama hits a home run. If the Bush Administration would have operated with this type of candor and introspection the Country might not be in the sorry shape it is now.

Chris in Va.   February 3rd, 2009 9:13 pm ET

@ billy-bayou.....Hate to burst your hate bubble there red, but the nation is already screwed up thanks to Mr.s Bush and Cheney, Obama had nothing to do with that, you did!

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   February 3rd, 2009 9:13 pm ET

So, HOW did he screw up? What happened, what took place?

CNN won't tell you because Anderson didn't ask the President.

Keep in mind.....the media needs the news. They will create news or see that it happens (like at news conferences) so they can stay in business.

This newsmaking means more to journalists than the health of the nation.

Obama is human. Give him the benefit of the doubt. Lies by omission (such as with Daschle) are something none of us can deal with.

bill johns   February 3rd, 2009 9:13 pm ET

if, Daschle can seerve in the cabinet, then he shouldn't be allowed to serve in Congress. maybe, your ethics are lower for Congess.

Pat Green (CA)   February 3rd, 2009 9:07 pm ET

Ray Fisher, Albuquerque, NM   February 3rd, 2009 9:04 pm ET

larry   February 3rd, 2009 9:03 pm ET

so what, nobodies perfect. even president obama said he'd make some mistakes. now move on already

Vetting All Over Again   February 3rd, 2009 9:02 pm ET

Now let's talk about that Clinton appointment and her "vetting" process over Bill's business interests. We KNOW it is a complete and total conflict of interest...Daschle just didn't have as big of a stick.

Nick in WA   February 3rd, 2009 9:02 pm ET

A President taking responsibility for his mistakes? I never saw this in the previous administration. Good for Obama, and I hope he finds someone as capable as Daschle who didn't fail to pay their taxes.

Andy   February 3rd, 2009 9:01 pm ET

I don't see how someone could make several "honest" mistakes. Obama has no problem going after bank CEO's but he can't even watch his own house. Government can not control everything like democrats want. Just look at Social Security and Medicare and all the fraud involved in that. Now there propsing a 700 Billion dollar spending bill. God help us. The sad thing is are own country caused this recession, just so people could own houses they couldn't afford. Great government program let me tell ya.

cba1999   February 3rd, 2009 9:00 pm ET

Daschle is a complete moron. My hope is that he never shows his face in public life again.

Texas Teacher   February 3rd, 2009 9:00 pm ET

I'm sorry.....

Joseph   February 3rd, 2009 9:00 pm ET

At least he corrected the problem and admitted it was a mistake, thats part of transparency, we didnt elect him to be perfect despite the constant taunting of republicans by calling him the "messiah", we that voted for him no hes not perfect but he will admit fault and will work to make sure it doesn't happen again. keep up the good work president even if u cant please all 300 million people in this country

serah   February 3rd, 2009 8:55 pm ET

Obama you did not screw up, you did what was right, you nominated an American intelligent and shrewd to handle a very complex department but because American want "clean people" it was hard for him to make it through. I respect Daschle and i hope we have people with the kind of expertise he has out there and are "clean" to fill his place. He did the right thing to pull out so New York Times can look for something else to write about. It is hard to find perfect individuals anyway. Even Jesus was faced with such a situation where he backed A WOMAN CAUGHT IN ADULTERY and he asked, "IF ANY ONE OF YOU IS WITHOUT SIN LET HIM BE THE FIRST TO THROW A STONE AT HER" If you know the story you recall all the accusers left one by one. well from the top to the bottom people have once in a while done something "unlawful" regarding taxes. whether it is evading or claiming more than you ought to and the like, the difference is they are never caught because they never seek high office and get into the lime light. People should stop behaving like this is some breaking news in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Golfduck   February 3rd, 2009 8:53 pm ET

I hope President Obama continues to nominate the old gaurd. As it goes now he could balance the budget once all the unpaid taxes are uncovered. I know most are just honest errors, like most of the tax payers. The difference here is they make millions and still make honest errors, guess they use TurboTax instead of people.

shannon   February 3rd, 2009 8:53 pm ET

you think, are you going to ask Geitner to step down now. We don't need tax cheats in the government.

Todd   February 3rd, 2009 8:52 pm ET

Umm, So he says he's sorry for the 2nd screw up on picking an appointee and we're just supposed to say 'sure, it's ok'? Are you kidding. Again, making Bush look better every day there Barrack!!!

No Incumbents 2010   February 3rd, 2009 8:48 pm ET

Yes We Can!... Evade our taxes.

GuyInVA   February 3rd, 2009 8:48 pm ET

The Daschle situation sends no message that the powerful are treated differently. He didn't get the job. However, Treasury Secretary Geithner's nomination and confirmation sends exactly that message. He didn't pay his taxes until caught, just like Senator Daschle, and got confirmed. For Pete's sake, he's in charge of the IRS!!!

I can see how someone could mistakenly neglect to pay taxes in Senator Daschle's situation. Who knew he had to pay taxes on a car and driver (there may be more, I don't know)? The Geithner fiasco is entirely different. He signed an agreement to pay the taxes, applied for and collected reimbursement for paying them, and then didn't pay them. He paid 2 years worth of them when an audit caught up with him, but only paid the rest when nominated for Treasury Secretary. It's okay though. When asked about it, Senate Majority Leader Reid informed everyone that our tax system is voluntary. Who knew?

Carl from MI   February 3rd, 2009 8:46 pm ET

How refreshing to have a President who admits he made a mistake.

Dubya could never bring himself to utter the words... how pathetic!!

Obama might even hold himself accountable for what happens on his watch as POTUS... also refreshing.

How nice to be a Republican and go thru your political life not having to be accountable for your actions...

RH   February 3rd, 2009 8:46 pm ET

Hell yes, you made a mistake! But, what about the Timothy Gietner mistake? What about that, Obama?????????? You let one off the hook and sack the other. What in the hell is up with that? They both should be OUT on the street.

Ridgeway   February 3rd, 2009 8:43 pm ET

Thank you Mr. President.

Experience is all well and good but there is something to be said for new blood. It is too bad about Daschle – he is well qualified for this job – but it sounds like he became too caught up in the trappings of money and power. Hopefully he can still serve in some advisory capacity.

I agree, Daschel would of drown your message on healthcare if he was appointed. It takes a big man to admit when he's wrong, and for that I'm proud of you Mr. President.

By the way I'm available to fill the position if you need me. I hold a Master's degree in health administration; worked in the healthcare industry for 20 years and paid my taxes as I should.

The person(s) that "screwed up" was who ever developed the questionaire for nominees to fill and and he forgot to press them about declarations of income from non-conventional sources. That's the root cause.

Now, because the buck stops with him, Obama may feel responsibility for this mistake by his staff.

A true Obama "screw up" WOULD BE if he doesn't set a clearly defined, and limited objective in the war in Afghanistan. A clear mission that we can win.

We don't want to be like the Soviets and lose a broad war there. Hit the target and get out.

No Obama, you didn't screw up. Democrat voters, young idealistic kids, and a media that throws its collective panties on whichever stage you happen to be speaking on are the ones who screwed up.

You are a corrupt and inept politician from Chicago; and, that's all that you are.

Unfortunately for all of us, your ambition, and the blind devotion of a media that was granted the power to watch over folks like you, basically conspired with your team to get you elected.

We are all screwed, sir.

Kevin   February 3rd, 2009 8:19 pm ET

President Obama did something in his 1st two weeks of office the President Bush didn't do his entire 8 years, admit he made a mistake. He's human and truly shows he is the commander in chief by taking responsibility for this mistake.

Obama '09   February 3rd, 2009 8:18 pm ET

at least he is humble enough to admit this, it takes a strong man to do this..lets see if Bush will admit to "Screwing" up our country.........

A+ for Candor; F for language   February 3rd, 2009 8:17 pm ET

President Obama, you have earned my respect for acknowledging your failure in this regard, but you have saddened me that you, a man of high education, would stoop to such gutter language on the national stage. Perhaps you do not realize you represent the great America. A country that allows school children to participate in writing to you on websites like CNN. They don't need that kind of role model from the leader of the free world. Clean it up.

Mike   February 3rd, 2009 8:17 pm ET

First Obama stands behind him in spite fo the tax issue, now it was a mistake. It was a mistake to nominate a tax cheat to run the IRS too, but he did it anyway.

T in NV   February 3rd, 2009 8:16 pm ET

I love that he can admit when he is wrong. It is so refreshing! It is so honest. All Obama haters need to respect the honesty because we never got an apology from Bush for any of his screw ups. We do not expect our POTUS to be infallible or super human, we expect them to be honest, humble, smart and to learn from their mistakes! I love our POTUS!

Gracie   February 3rd, 2009 8:16 pm ET

THANK YOU Mr. President for being honest and admitting you made mistakes. NO ONE IS PERFECT. Everyone "screws up", you are only human. Only GOD is perfect and makes NO mistake.

I commend you for doing your best and staying focus on the work at hand. We support you 150% and will continue to WORK TOGETHER towards digging our country out of this hell hole.

A lot of people do nothing but complain and attack, but they don't have a clue. We are in this boat TOGETHER, if you FAIL, we all FAIL.

So the Republicans better get their heads out of their butts and stop the blame game and START working towards implementing positive, constructive ideas when it comes to the stimulus plan.

For the Republicans just to stand on the sidelines doing nothing and yelling NO, NO, NO is NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!

If you are not part of the solution, then get heck OUT OF THE WAY and let those willing to work together get the job done!!!

NOW that is a screw up.....how can we appoint a man to be in charge of the IRS and US Treasury when he stole the money given to him to pay his IRS taxes and then avoided paying over $43,000 in taxes?

I think that was worse than Daschel.

You screwed up with all your stupid nominations of liars and tax cheats. What do you plan on screwing up next other than the entire nation with your stupid "stimulus "plan?

Pres. Obama can lower his ethics bar 50% and it will still be out of reach for the republican administration that just left - and for some of the ones in the Senate and House that will be eliminated in 2010.

Thank you, Mr. President, for taking responsibility. I do not remember any of your Republican contemporaries ever doing that for infringements far worse. For them, it was always deny, deny, deny. It takes a strong person, like yourself, to take responsibility for a member of your team.

This is still not even half as bad as what Bush screwed up during his presidency, and he hasnt even admitted it yet. We are still paying for all of Bush's screw up, and paying dearly with our soldiers lives and monetary income.
