WASHINGTON (CNN) - A group of lucky Washington schoolchildren received a lesson Tuesday that they'll never forget.

President Barack Obama and first lady Michelle Obama made a suprise visit to a local charter school, joking that they wanted to get out of the White House.

Watch: President, first lady read to kids at D.C. school

During their visit, the first couple read a copy of "The Moon Over Star" - a book about the 1969 moon landing - to 25 stunned second-graders at the Capital City Public Charter School.

The excited children mobbed Obama, tugging at the president and offering him drawings.

Asked to name his favorite superhero, the president identified Spiderman and Superman.

He also divulged that he didn't always want to be president. As a kid, said Obama, he wanted to be an architect.

During the presidential campaign, Obama promised, among other things, to double charter school funding, boost support for math and science education, and promote merit pay for teachers.

I love the picture. It's refreshing to have a President who knows the importance of providing for our children and the necessity of quality education. And for those kids, they will always remember the day the President of the United States came to school. He's OBM (okay by me).

I like the title. Ofcourse, that is where the stimulus idea came from, outerspace. Because it has so much wasted junk in it, the economy won't get stimulated before we land a man/woman on Mars.

That bill is nothing more than failed Democratic initiatives over the last 4 years that have been put into a bill and given a new name. How does all of these upgrades to the federal buildings, giving money to Hollywood for film, money for voucher to switch your retarded TV to the new cable system and giving, yes giving, hybrid cars to federal employees that make enough money to buy their own? And no doubt the blind will follow the head mouse on this one too.

But neither did he fly all the way to FL to find kids to read to.

But did he ask the important question: "Is our children learning"?

I'm glad to see that they are showing young children the importance of reading. It also shows the children that they have a president who can actually read! I'm a proud republican who voted Obama/Biden.

Hey Bernj, where's the book that is right side up? He's not holding a book. Once again, a democratic pointing to failures that aren't real, just imagined.

So Obama reads to kids, it's okay. But when Bush did it, it was wrong.

That's great. What a thrill for those kids. Something they'll remember and talk about for the rest of their lives.

To those kids, their superhero was in the room with them. What a rush it had to be. I don't worship mortals but children do and he is as close as they will ever see to a superhero. Our President must have extrordinary stamina at this time to visit a school with his schedule!!!

  17. On the fence about Barack

No, the left won't complain about him reading books to school children if the right won't sit in utter worship that he did.

its high time we increase funding for math and science education...the right wing nut jobs and evangelicals are hell bent on sending our kids into the dark ages

Michelle, turn that frown upside down, what a sour look on her face. She looks less than thrilled to be there. Being in the lime light now, you should always be camera ready, say "cheese".

Isn't it great that Obama actually reads?

It was also great to see him reading the Bills he was signing on to BEFORE he actually signed them.

Somewhere in Texas.....a village has had their idiot returned.

  21. Rewinding Time?

Didn't I just see this same picture in 2001 but pictured then were President Bush and First Lady Laura at a school doing the same thing. I feel like deja vue.

    Star struck?

Any kid would be in awe of the president. However, adults read this, and the use of that word has more meaning behind it.

Wouldn't you love to have Michelle come to your kid's school? Pure happiness, that girl.

  24. Very good!

I teach and cannot imagine what my children would say if this First Couple would come to our school. I am so excited that Pres. Obama loves education. I look forward to the implementation of his plan. Our children need the encouragement and help. I am praying for the success of this administration.

Ummm, this is a little different than 9/11.

God forbid he go read to children on a day when the Dow was up almost 2%! Oh, the abject horror!
