Students line up at the official ceremony to unveil the Barack Obama Elementary School sign.

(CNN) - Students at former Ludlum Elementary School made history when their school became the first in the nation to be renamed after President Barack Obama. It’s virtually unheard of to name an educational institution after a sitting president. Students and parents gathered for the official name change ceremony Wednesday morning where the “Barack Obama Elementary School” sign was unveiled.

During the campaign season, the children became interested in the election, participating in mock presidential debates at the Long Island elementary school - which sits in close proximity to Hofstra University, the site of the final presidential debate.

They began the movement to officially change their school’s name to honor the 44th president. Following the election, the Hempstead School Board voted unanimously to adopt the resolution after students read their written requests to make the name change permanent.

After the inauguration, all 466 students received navy sweatshirts from the school with the words “Yes We Can” emblazoned in English and Spanish. The school is roughly 60 percent Hispanic and 40 percent African-American.

President Obama was invited to the ceremony, but was unable to attend.

I totally agree with Mike the Independent from Ohio. It's very apparent this was done because Obama is black, he certainly hasn't earned it!

You should have waited awhile to name the school after a sitting president. You could regret putting that name on anything before it's all over.....

the students did not have a choice to be involved. They do not feel empowered, they are not interested in politics. This is all just fun and games to them.

What an honor to attend a school named after a president who has made history. God Bless the wisdom of our children.

Awww that's great. To all the negative folks. The only thing that will ruin Obama's presidency is the Republicans on the hill being led by John McCain....

to those who say he has not done anything

He HAS inspired millions in this country and the world. It is as plain as the nose on your face that the parents, teachers and students at the school believe so they made the change. I'm sure it has just made them prouder to go to school, get an education and become a contributing member of society. Just like the American dream the majority of Americans share.

I wonder how much the new sign cost the taxpayers. Great use of educational funds during an economic "crisis ".

It shows how incredibly short shighted you are. Of *course* it was done because he is black. As the first black man to achieve the nation's highest office, he is empowering to the black youth of today. They finally have reason to believe that there are no barriers in their lives, and that they can achieve anything that they want.

You have a problem with that? Please explain.

I totally disagree with this, he has not done anything yet! Isn't this usually for someone that has done something? And from where I'm sitting, looks like he could be in for some rocky road ahead.

Those chidren are learning about politics in the best way. They have a president in front of them that they see as respectable, admirable, and someone to aspire to be like. We haven't had that since JFK (some of you may say Reagan – I personally disagree). I can't believe you people so tortured inside to see our children looking at their country and their president as GREAT!

Funny how you bitter unhappy Republicans assume that anyone who supports PRESIDENT OBAMA must be deciding based on feelings and not facts. Apparently, the FACTS that we use are discounted because in your minds...if we had the facts, we'd have to see it YOUR way. We ALL have the facts in front of us; we all just come to different conclusions as to whether we agree or disagree with them.

I voted for Obama, and am definitely a democrat and even I find this ridiculous. What if he ends up sucking as president? I guess they can always change the name again, but still.

i agree its too early to name stuff after Obama. yes he made history but it wasnt of anything he did, just of who he is. he could rank as one of the best presisents ever or end like bush or nixon, we dont know. i hope & pray he rights the ship as he says he can. but this country is built on results not promises.

Absolutely ridiculous, this man has done NOTHING but appoint people who don't pay their taxes, then stand's behind them. This man is nothing more than a crook and anyone who can't see that is truly lost, I'm not saying republicans are much better, but this guy is the absolute pits and the sooner people realize that, the better off this country will be
