NY school officially named after President

Students line up at the official ceremony to unveil the Barack Obama Elementary School sign.

(CNN) - Students at former Ludlum Elementary School made history when their school became the first in the nation to be renamed after President Barack Obama. It’s virtually unheard of to name an educational institution after a sitting president. Students and parents gathered for the official name change ceremony Wednesday morning where the “Barack Obama Elementary School” sign was unveiled.

During the campaign season, the children became interested in the election, participating in mock presidential debates at the Long Island elementary school - which sits in close proximity to Hofstra University, the site of the final presidential debate.

They began the movement to officially change their school’s name to honor the 44th president. Following the election, the Hempstead School Board voted unanimously to adopt the resolution after students read their written requests to make the name change permanent.

After the inauguration, all 466 students received navy sweatshirts from the school with the words “Yes We Can” emblazoned in English and Spanish. The school is roughly 60 percent Hispanic and 40 percent African-American.

President Obama was invited to the ceremony, but was unable to attend.

Well, I was expecting kids and dogs to be named after him, but certainly not a school–not yet anyway. Most often those things are reserved for people who have passed away or were killed in a military action of some kind. Even Martin Luther King had to be dead to get streets named after him! Give me a break and quit shoving him down our throats!!

I'm a lifelong democrat and I voted for Obama because I believed his message of change and hope after 8 years of Bush. However, after seeing what he has done since being in office (hiring tax cheats, trying to push this wasteful socialist "stimulus" package on us, turning up the thermostat in the WH while telling us to turn ours down). What a hypocrite!!! I hope you all are doing your homework into the “stimulus” package. A 1500 dollar tax credit for ILLEGAL ALIENS??? I'm having buyer’s remorse about Obama. I think we've been had and I’m really worried about the future of this country. I think one party in control is very dangerous (especially with the likes of Pelosi on the Dems side).

August I don't hate Republicans but I do see a lot of hateful things on this site from them. I hate no one. I believe in us all getting along. I'm just being real. There are republicans on the hill that really would like to see Obama fall flat on his face.

    @ August

Not done anything? Are you even paying attention? He has:
    Ordered Gitmo closed.
Reversed the GOP's restriction on foreign aid that prevented education of people about abortion as an option (i.e., because it violated the idea of informed consent).
Ordered DEP to consider tougher emissions standards.
Set ethical standards and required ethics classes for employees of his administration.
Appointed a cabinet that, despite what the few naysayers regurgitating Rush's talking points say, is getting widespread approval.
Spearheaded an economic stimulus package, which again, despite the blabber of the Rushtards, was done in an historically bipartisan manner because he sought out and met with GOP leaders directly in hopes of getting their support.
    Signed SCHIP.
Signed the Lily Ledbetter Act for equal pay.
Worked with the Pentagon to figure out how to get out of Iraq and increase our presence in Afghanistan...not to mention fired missiles into Pakistan based on intel about Al Qaeda.

He's proved himself just fine. This is very sweet. Those kids know they can grow up to be anything they want, even if they aren't white & rich.
He won North Carolina in the election. He won Indiana. For an African American Democrat, he beat some pretty incredible odds.
It's touching to see these kiddos so inspired. And their inspiration is really a lot more powerful than anything these clown commenters can say.

Way to early to start naming things after Obama (probably why the school system is in such shambles). I wonder how many schools changed their name to Nixon during the first weeks of his presidency.

Really? Not necessary. Not true. Obama's not that different than any other man who has taken office. He's just (half) black. He's not going to turn the US into a socialist nation (although, heck, that may be for the better ;-] ). This was probably my #1 pet peeve during the election.

What are they going to call it when Obama fails to deliver and walk on water. This must be school of black majority! Why else? Once they figure out he not so mighty like he has them fooled. Then I guess they will have to rename if after Walt Disney dog "Goffey?

for all you who seem to thinks it's crazy to have a school named after him this early is crazy, it's a new York thing they name schools and buildings after presidents. There are many people and presidents who didn't achieve anything yet they have schools or buildings named after them. But cnn knows that the extreme right wingers, haters, people who have no life, and racist bloggers will show up to post something about this issue even though it's hardly news worthy.

wow lot of racists on this blog site. So a 100% white school would name their school, George Washington or John Adams.

And yes Obama has proven himself, what exactly has W done in 8yrs besides destroy our country. Maybe that is what you haters think is proving yourself destroying our country. Well Obama isn't going to do that.

    sniffit,

we have not seen anything yet, he is "working" on it. Yes, I am paying attention. Yes, he has appointed his cabinet along with a few cheaters along the way, I for one, disapprove of his appointment of the !d!ot that is running the IRS, how bizarre to have someone that cheats on his taxes! I don't think Rush has anything to do with these so called "cheaters", at least Dashle had the sense to back out.

Sniffit – Stuff it GOPers. It's an elementary school. Who cares what it's named as long as it's doing a good job of educating those kids. Jerks.

Just how loudly would you complain if it was named for Bush? I happen to be a Democrat, so don't say only Repbulicans are complaining. Personally I think it's not a smart move. Just how embarrassed they will be when they are in the headlines again changing it to something else because Obama is not the boy wonder they think he is. He may be, but he hasn't proven it yet.

If a child gets excited about naming their school after a President and it makes them more interested in school I am all for it. It is not easy to keep some kids focused when it comes to school. Some folks on here are acting as if Obama made them name the school after him. Positive people attract positive things.
