Students line up at the official ceremony to unveil the Barack Obama Elementary School sign.

(CNN) - Students at former Ludlum Elementary School made history when their school became the first in the nation to be renamed after President Barack Obama. It’s virtually unheard of to name an educational institution after a sitting president. Students and parents gathered for the official name change ceremony Wednesday morning where the “Barack Obama Elementary School” sign was unveiled.

During the campaign season, the children became interested in the election, participating in mock presidential debates at the Long Island elementary school - which sits in close proximity to Hofstra University, the site of the final presidential debate.

They began the movement to officially change their school’s name to honor the 44th president. Following the election, the Hempstead School Board voted unanimously to adopt the resolution after students read their written requests to make the name change permanent.

After the inauguration, all 466 students received navy sweatshirts from the school with the words “Yes We Can” emblazoned in English and Spanish. The school is roughly 60 percent Hispanic and 40 percent African-American.

President Obama was invited to the ceremony, but was unable to attend.

What?? A school is already named after this loser? After this muslim African native? After this ineligible usurper?

This is going way too far. He is not officially or legally or constitutionally our president. Wake up morons.

"Who cares what it's named as long as it's doing a good job of educating those kids. Jerks."

Right, because government run education has done so many wonders for our children. And in case you care, when asking a question it's appropriate to end your sentence with a question mark.

Ya I know he hasn't accomplished anything... other than being the FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN PRESIDENT... that is definetly enough to warrant a school name change, especially if the school is comprised of mostly African American Students.

    .....and the brainwashing continues.

Before much longer, ALL Americans will be UNTHINKING, UNQUESTIONING, DEAD-BETWEEN-THE-EARS OBAMA KOOL-AID DRINKERS. Remember the good ol' days when presidents were actually expected to EARN their legacies. Of course he HAS been in office almost two and a half weeks. (I hear they are already taking measurments of Mount Rushmore.)

IF you could STOP HATING you may be able to start thinking. When has a group of children felt so empowered to make change? Having given these youth, the next generation, a positive goal to work together and complete, they now feel included in a system. When one feels included, when one feels like they CAN make a difference. Apathy disolves and progress moves forward.

Most of you apathetic haters need to disolve and let this next generation be empowered to improve your fear-mongering system.

Be thankful that this is the internet and you can hide behind your anonymity. The bigotry some of you people possess is beyond disgraceful. When you write on these blogs what is going through your minds? The entire world sees this. Some of you claim to be religious and you believe you will answer to a god. Don't you think your god would be rather angry at the hate you are spreading?

Some of you need to really look into your souls/hearts/whatever and find out what really matters.

Thanks for the info. I do know that San Fran wanted to name a sewage system after him while he was still in office.

Diva, quit spewing racism. You named many fine black people who have done great and given us many wonderful things. The trouble is not every black person is to be admired. Rev. Sharpton, O.J. Simpson, Idi Amin (just to name a few) are DEFINITELY not to be admired. So, how would you like me to start naming great white people who have done so much for everyone and given us so much just to point out that nothing should be said negative about a white man. That's what you state when we shouldn't say anything bad about President Obama because he's black. Well, maybe, just maybe, we would be saying the same negative things about him no matter what color he is. We are complaining about a MAN who just HAPPENS to be black. Not saying it because he IS black. Think before you post.

    To 82nd. Airborne Division:

I salute you sir, and thank you for serving our country and for telling the truth so well. It is a sad thing to note the hate here, and to know that the freedom of speech being used here to spew it is being fought for by decent Americans, of all colors, and faiths. Sadly, the hateful people posting here are cowards posing behind the guise oif conservative patriots. My father was a veteran of two wars and a career Army man, and no matter who was in office, he respected that office and did his duty, unlike the sniveling sore losers posting here.

Stay well, sir, and return home to you family soon.

This Obama worship is starting to turn into a "cult of personality." I find that worrisome in the extreme.

LOL, naming a school after Obama. Shows how crazy people are out there. The best part, the sweatshirts had to be in Spanish and English. Nothing better than seeing your country no longer being your country but a country for the special interest groups and foreigners. I hope a state out there votes for secession. I will move to that state. That will teach all you wacko Dems and Reps a lesson.

  16. I hate Rush but..

Considering the school is tax exempt just like ALL his nominees lately, this makes sense.

And on the 16th day, the great messiah proclaimed that the sun was warm and kitty cats are cute and the sheep all bleated, bahhhh, oh great messiah, you are so right and that is "the greatest story ever told".

This is beyond the pale, check out his poll numbers plummeting along with his PORK filled bailout bill.

I HATE Rush, but Barry, you are one and done.

FOR WHAT!!!!??? HE'S DONE NOTHING!!! We are a pitiful society who rewards mediocrity and now it's all the way up to President. Just amazing. We are teaching our children to lower their sights, they can be rewarded for simply showing up. Nauseating.

I guess the Bush haters can't stand that some people don't like Obama. We have every right to treat Obama the same way the democrats treated Bush. Obama is turning America into France, and we watch all the libs cheer about it. Socialism has ruined every country that tried it.

  22. Silly democrat, paychecks are for workers

I have to agree with a lot of the people on here who say this man has not done anything. Putting his name on a school is just another example of the people treating him like a star. Wait for him to actually do something before you start mindlessly praising him. I know that is hard for a lot of people to imagine though...since that is all they have done with this man.

the more you people hate the man, the most likely even God lifts him up! Count how many times you have tried to crush him down the last 24 months, but he is still walking to walk! Be blessed Barack!
