WASHINGTON (CNN) – Two sources familiar with Hilda Solis’ confirmation process tells CNN the reason the committee vote on her nomination to be Labor Secretary was postponed today is because Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee did not know about her husband’s tax issues until two days ago, when they were approached by USA Today.

"We reviewed her tax returns, and her tax returns are in order," Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Wednesday. "The story denotes that her husband had some issues with paying a business tax and, obviously, that taxes should be paid.

"[Solis] is not a partner in that business, so we're not going to penalize her for her husband's business mistakes. Obviously, her husband, I think, has and should pay any taxes that he owes."

She should not be held to her husband's error especially since she is not a partner in that business BUT, if she knew about it, she should have disclosed it. This is getting ridiculous!

Being that Solis is not involved in her husband's business, those who are whining about this apparently believe that wives are appendages to their husbands. Perhaps they could find a time machine and go back to the 19th century where they'll be more comfortable.

Of course, all of this is really about the Republican's anger that Obama has appointed a Labor Secretary who will actually be – gasp! – pro-labor.

there you go. Democrats believe that taxes should be paid. The other people in question paid theirs, too, with all penalties and interest. As to how they could have screwed them up in the first place, none of us, including you Repugs, knows. Of course, there were clearly more tax bums in the Bush Administration but you conveniently forget that. They are probably still in arrears. Be that as it may, most people have erred on their taxes at some point. I know I have, but it has always been that I didn't take a deduction I should have so the joke's on me. Women in America are emancipated.

We make our own business decisions, and that includes in relation to our spouses.

If this woman did nothing wrong and her husband did, it is his sin, not hers.

She probably didn't even know about it.

James II   February 5th, 2009 5:45 pm ET

Mr. and Mrs. McCain have always filed seperately since they have been married. That is why it does not matter.

That is also why Hillary and Bill did not get into issues over taxes. Although he did take in 90 Million over 5 years from the Royal Saudi Arabian Family.

Solis and her husband file jointly. The business is owned by hubby.

Get facts straight people. Then ask questions and give opinions.

California Gold   February 5th, 2009 5:36 pm ET

I detect a pattern. The top ranking appointments and elected officials have a problem with filing correct income tax returns. January brought in quite a bit of money. The IRS should take a list of all cabinet and sub-cabinet positions for the last 10 years, a list of all Congressmen/women for the past 10 years and audit those returns (going back 7 years). Bet there would be a boatload of money paid up.

No. This was about her husband's business, which must file its own taxes. Moreover, the way this has been presented it is fairly obvious the tax returns had nothing to do with her. The headline is just purposefully misleading to rile up the poop-flinging GOP monkeys.

Toby in Illinois   February 5th, 2009 5:21 pm ET

Perhaps all of this indicates (among other things, of course) a need to simplify the tax code. I use Turbo-Tax, and I'm never quite sure if I've done it right. Indeed, I was told once by the IRS that I owed several thousand dollars, but I found the documentation that showed them that I did not. Not even the IRS can tell how much you really owe!

Ms. Solis' taxes and her returns are in order, and there is apparently an issue of her husband's business tax, which needs to be rectified. I think many of the commenters here have never had their taxes reviewed for such an appointment, it is a nerve wracking process worse than an IRS audit. It does raise the issue of knowing your spouse's business even if you file separate returns.

Our President has to hire over 8000 people to work for him. If you haven't checked lately, the people in Washington aren't HONEST ANGELS. At this rate, we won't have a deficit. He needs to nominate more Democrats....and maybe while he is at it he can get Charlie Rangle to pay his fair share.

Amber   February 5th, 2009 3:48 pm ET

How come when a Republican nominee comes along, they can get appointed even if they've had major ethics violations in their past, but when a Democrat nominee comes along, their tax returns and the tax returns of everyone around them are under the microscope.

You have to be Elliot frackin' Ness to get nominated if you have a D after your name!

Meanwhile, Republicans can tap their shoe at the airport for sex, send explicit homosexual messages to child interns, sign their corporate buddies up for no-bid contracts in wartime, and disclose the names of CIA agents in wartime.

Lovely double standard, there.

Terry   February 5th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

I am a big Obama supporter. I also believe that public servants should pay their taxes and obey the law. If Hilda Solis's husband has not paid his business taxes, he should be compelled to pay taxes, fines, and penalties. Hilda Solis is not culpable for her husband's actions. If he got a speeding ticket she would not be served with a warrant for not paying the fine. If he shoplifted, she would not be arrested.

What these income tax scandals prove is that most higher income folks do not feel compelled to pay all they should, and IRS doesn't enforce or audit. I say, audit all elected and appointed officials in Washington and let's do a little house-cleaning.

Stacy from Leesburg, VA   February 5th, 2009 3:45 pm ET

Did anyone care to read the story or does everyone here jump on to rant and blame? If so, they would see that it was her husband having issues and that she was not a partner in the business. So, where's the story here folks? The next story is that her neighbor's husband's son-in-law from his first marriage forgot to pay sales tax on a hamburger he bought in Pennslyvania 10 years ago. Don't pin this on someone that has nothing to do with her husband's business affairs. If you do continue on this, it just makes your ugly partisan side show.

Flat-earther, Georgia   February 5th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

If everyone in government would pay their taxes, we would not have a deficit. What is it with these people, the average working person would be in jail.

JerryAW   February 5th, 2009 3:42 pm ET

I really wish people would learn to read. According to the report, the person with the possible tax issue is Mrs Solis's husband, not the nominee herself. Unless they file jointly, this is not and should not be her issue. Next we'll be hearing about a nominee being questioned because of something their 3rd cousin, twice removed did. People, we really do need to get a grip here.

I am also becoming quite suspicious of many of these charges and accusations. The Republicans have a strong stake in the failure of the Obama administration (can you say "the next elections?"), even if it means the whole country goes down. Between these nominee issues (granted, many of them have been legitimate, if exaggerated) and the attempted sabotage of the stimulus package, a pattern is beginning to emerge.

H.R.873 : To amend the Public Health Service Act to provide for human embryonic stem cell research.
Sponsor: Rep DeGette, Diana [CO-1] (introduced 2/4/2009)

Why am I not surprised? Wasn't it Leona Helmsley who said that "only the little people pay taxes?"

Jeff Spangler, Arlington, VA   February 5th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

Simple suggested question to Obama vetters: Do you or your spouse have any reason to believe that your income and taxes for the past ten years have not been fully and accurately reported and paid? (A "yes" leads to an intensive face-to-face and paper audit, and no one is indispensible.)

Looking for Truth   February 5th, 2009 3:02 pm ET

This new change in government and ethics is really going big guns.
Congrats on the first 15 days. How many lobbyist and tax cheats does this make now.

BB   February 5th, 2009 3:00 pm ET

I'd hate to be held accountable or punished for what my EX-husband did. My my my.

Come again!   February 5th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Is anyone in Washington paying taxes! Are we the only ones paying taxes. Mr. President....I love you, but you need to appoint a Tax czar to look to audit everyone in congress ...... this is freaking ridiculous! If I hear about another tax issue with another appointee I am going to scream. Its a good thing the Obama admin. have these stringent requirements or these things would not be coming out!

obama-mama   February 5th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Solis Tax issue? She doesn't have a tax issue and you're not even sure about her husband's tax issue. He is not being appointed here.

Linda   February 5th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

All these tax issues by government officials need to be investigated by proper authorities. This is absurd that all these nominees are owing taxes. The adverage american has to pay taxes, so how are these people in Washington avoiding it! ALL government employees, including the President down to the White House staff need to be REQUIRED TO HAVE CURRENT TAX INFORMATION. And now all these people need to be investigated
What a joke!

Scott the Independent   February 5th, 2009 2:59 pm ET

Now the spouse's taxes are under review. Did anyone check Chenney's wife's returns or Cindy McCain – oh right they both refused to submit full details of their returns.

Boston Irish   February 5th, 2009 2:58 pm ET

OMG – Another tax issue. You'd think after the first one they would learn to ask the right questions and not nominate someone they are going to have trouble selling. I think there is a comprehension problem with his vetting squad. Maybe him too for not doing anything about it.

Put Away Childish Ways   February 5th, 2009 2:57 pm ET

I hope bloggers of both political parties will stomp on partisans that choose to make assine comments / connections between this man and this woman, who, clearly maintain a firewall on the subject of taxes.

She remains unaffected by any issues he may or may not have.

Mississippi Mike   February 5th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Another one bites the dust.

Obama is either so corrupt he doesn't care whether or not his appointees obey tax laws or he is so incompetent that he can't properly vet his candidates. Take your pick.

Mike, Syracuse NY   February 5th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Taxgate continues.

Bob in Pa   February 5th, 2009 2:56 pm ET

Another ?? God help us. I wonder if their is an IRS officer willing to call in the entire Congress and their staff members for Audits ?

obama-mama   February 5th, 2009 2:55 pm ET

Why do I smell a rat?
