Sources: Committee informed two days ago about Solis tax issues

WASHINGTON (CNN) - Two sources familiar with Hilda Solis’ confirmation process tells CNN the reason the committee vote on her nomination to be Labor Secretary was postponed today is because Democrats and Republicans on the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions committee did not know about her husband’s tax issues until two days ago, when they were approached by USA Today.

"We reviewed her tax returns, and her tax returns are in order," Press Secretary Robert Gibbs told reporters Wednesday. "The story denotes that her husband had some issues with paying a business tax and, obviously, that taxes should be paid.

"[Solis] is not a partner in that business, so we're not going to penalize her for her husband's business mistakes. Obviously, her husband, I think, has and should pay any taxes that he owes."

I am telling you the best thing that has happened to our country is President Obama! Everyone he nominates ends up paying their taxes that they have been owing for years! At this rate, we won't have a deficit. He needs to nominate more Democrats....and maybe while he is at it he can get Charlie Rangle to pay his fair share.

Amazing the "hollier than thou" Bush holdovers.
Bush ethics were ZERO; Obama ethics are 97 per cent and the right wing ranters scream about the 3 per cent.
    Bunch of conservative losers.

We won't need a stimulus package by the time all the democrats and their families pay their back taxes.

Democrats you have a tax problem, it time to check Obama's taxes.

No wonder Democrats like to raise taxes they do not pay them.

All those who voted for change how is it going so far.

I love how all the liberals are claiming she is not part of her husband's business so his tax issues have nothing to do with her.

These are the same people who were crucifying John McCain because of his wife's business...

I love the smell of hypocracy in the morning...

another day, another nominee, another tax problem.

If the same percentage of the general population had tax problems at the rate Obama nominee's do it would be considered an epidemic of tax fraud.

Isn't it great how all the liberals fall back on "But Bush...." or "But the Republicans..." instead of actually taking ownership of their own mistakes? Get used to it, three years and eleven months of being under the microscope you may find your own people are even worse than the ones you have been complaining about.

Our President has to hire over 8000 people to work for him. If you haven't checked lately, the people in Washington aren't HONEST ANGELS. Politics is dirty, and it's going to take a lot to change Washington. And if many other Democrats and Republicans taxes were audited....there will be lots of issues.

By the way, he inherited a country in an economic MESS..There are still 2 wars being fought. He is being watched and recorded 24 / 7 by the media and the world...and every mistake he makes will scrutinized to discredit his name.

With the exception of the vetting issue..I think he is doing a fine job!
The Republicans can criticize TODAY all they want...but

    NEWS FLASH>>>>>
Every time the Americans look at their bank accounts, 401k's, stocks, retirement accounts, mortgage or lack of a mortgage, loss of jobs...RECESSION....They will be reminded of what Republicans and the Bush administration allowed to happen to our economy under their watch!

That story is not fading any time soon, as long as our economy is sinking!

Look at the partisan politics going on here. Ms. Solis should not be held responsible for the alleged tax issues of her husband over which she had no control. This is getting into a ridiculous area of partisan politics. The problem is the tax code is far too complex for anyone to fully understand.

Thank you Mr. Gibbs! That is her HUSBAND! The line has to be drawn. We Democrats will allow this to turn into a witch hunt.

Does anyone pay taxes in this country? I mean really. This is ridiculous. Is Obama the only one with clean taxes?

No wonder Dems like higher taxes - they don't pay them.

I recall Hillary seemed to be held accountable for her husband and his business (so to speak). If that is the case than Mrs. Solas should also be held accountable for her husband.

Do they file joint taxes. If so than she is considered jointly responsible.

Mike in Houston...get a clue and read the article. Your obsession with our President (that means yours too whether you like it or not) is spinning out of control. Each time you post you make yourself look worse than your previous post made you look.

Nice CNN. Write the headline to make it seem like Solis didn't pay her taxes because you know the bitter, barely-literate GOPer spin machine mulletheaded rednecks that frequent the site don't read the articles (or if they do, barely understand them) anyway. Gotta justify the price of the advertising space on the website though I suppose.

  23. I hate Rush but..

Amber EVERYTHING you said is so factually inaccurate that I don't know where to begin, so for you I will keep it simple as all heck.

The first President to give a no-bid contract to Halliburton was..... wait for it genius...., your hero Bill Clinton.

I am sure she knows nothing about her hubby's finances as she is an empty, empty vessel just like the one who is trying to hire her.

The chosen one has become a bad joke right before our eyes and I will say it again for you sheep, it is because he has NEVER run a business, has NEVER run a city and has NEVER run a state all he has ever run is HIS MOUTH.

    One and done Barry.

Ms. Solis' taxes and her returns are in order, and there is apparently an issue of her husband's business tax, which needs to be rectified. I think many of the commenters here have never had their taxes reviewed for such an appointment, it is a nerve wracking process worse than an IRS audit. It does raise the issue of knowing your spouse's business even if you file separate returns.
