Beyonce and James together at the Cadillac Records premiere.

(CNN) - The entertainment world may be in a swoon over Barack Obama, but one legendary soul singer is fuming at the new president and the pop star who serenaded the first couple on inauguration night.

Etta James, famous for her rendition of the song “At Last,” is apparently miffed that pop star Beyonce was tapped to perform the ballad as the president and first lady slow-danced during the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball on January 20.

“You guys know your president, right?” the singer asked an audience in Canada last week, according to audio posted on TMZ.com. “You know the one with big ears? Yeah, wait a minute. He ain’t my president.”

She then went after Beyonce: “That woman singing for him, singing my song? She’s gonna get her ass whipped.”

James added that she “can’t stand Beyonce” and that the starlet “has no business up there singing, singing up there on a big old President day, singing my song that I been singing forever.”

But is James flip-flopping on Beyonce? She did not raise an objection when the singer portrayed her in the film “Cadillac Records” - and just recently, James’s son told a New York paper that his mother was moved by the inauguration night performance.

she's in that "age"

Eileen Parker   February 6th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

I think it's sad that Ms. Etta James was not asked to sing.
What's even more sad is that James was so hurt that she ended up just sounding catty, drunk and made an actual threat to Beonce, who was probably a fan till now.

What I still don't get though is how CNN has become so exploitive that it's now in the realm of POP CULTURE POLITICS.

Richelle   February 6th, 2009 12:32 pm ET

Your comment is awaiting moderation.

You idiots who keep saying that PRESIDENT Obama is not your president sound real stupid. If you live in the USA or if you are an American he is your president. And, has it occurred to any of you fools that PRESIDENT Obama is not the one who decided who was to perform what? This has nothing to do with PRESIDENT Obama, it's just a publicity stunt by Etta James and her entourage.

casual reader   February 6th, 2009 12:30 pm ET

Beyonce is Hot! Etta who??

Merri Moore   February 6th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

I am completely on ETTA JAMES' side. "At Last" is Etta James' signature song. She has entertained millions of people all over the world. If I heard Beyonce say , "I would love to perform", once, I heard it one hundred times, every time she could get a mike slammed in her face,. Tne young singer hasn't paid her dues to deserve singing a song as the Pres & wife were having first dance. It should have been a legend, someone who deserves the honor. I don't blame Ms. James one little bit. That decision was a HUGE error in judgment on the part of all who had a part in PLANNING the festivities.
While I'm dissing Beyonce, I'm going to bring out that she does not use any of her VAST Wealth for charity, in North America or in Africia. She has a tawdry sense of taste; as long as it's expensive, she'll have it, thank you very much.

Anne   February 6th, 2009 12:22 pm ET

This has nothing to do with Canada. Some people just say stupid things!

Kiki Carlton   February 6th, 2009 12:21 pm ET

Before I read this I would have bet a million dollars this women was dead. Her being alive is the most shocking part of this story.

Bean   February 6th, 2009 10:38 am ET

Tangi Lopes   February 6th, 2009 10:30 am ET

Who even knew cokehead Etta James was still alive?! Nasty, bitter old wench!

Patricia, Minneapolis   February 6th, 2009 10:25 am ET

Oh come on! There we go again with all these racial comments. BORING, quit it! And Mme James is simply showing jealousy...She had her time to shine and she did...This comment makes her sound like a common H A T E R.
These days, we are all busy wondering how we will survive...This diva's feet stumping is so childish.
And...Why has she waited these many days to say something? Is she a token of some Republican hypocrite, for a change?
Whatever.

Dionne Warwick   February 6th, 2009 10:24 am ET

Etta is still very Ghetto after all these years!

jumpinugly   February 6th, 2009 10:19 am ET

Thanks to the movie and Beyonce we all found out you were still alive Etta! Really get a grip!

Kenneth   February 6th, 2009 10:15 am ET

Oh Etta ... you sang "At Last" beautifully during your time in the spotlight. Beyonce merely paid homage to you by reviving a song that had been relegated to car commercials.

I'm sure you still have a beautiful voice but do you really believe that Beyonce Knowles meant any disrespect by singing "your" song for the President and First lady? As a woman who lived through the struggles of African Americans and dealt with the early struggles of the recording industry how can you possibly deny the President of the United States simply because another woman sang your song? A song that transcends generations does so because it has a message and is meaningful to a lot of people. Not because of the artist that performed it but because of the way the artist presented it. The simple fact is that Beyonce, at this time, provided a better presentation than you could ... at this time.

Time is your nemesis ... not Beyonce and certainly not the President of the United States of America.

Mike   February 6th, 2009 10:14 am ET

Sorry about not getting the invite to sing your song Eta. Like most of us, Obama probably was surprised to find out that you were still alive.

NSC   February 6th, 2009 10:11 am ET

It a pity tht she would need to be so nasty about it. Instead of being honored that her song was sung, she would rather blast everyone since she didn't sing it. The President likes Beyonce as an artist and obvious likes the song. Simple. No "yes we can" for Etta.

Disgusted and Dissappointed   February 6th, 2009 10:11 am ET

OH AND ONE MORE THING...FOR THOSE WHO DONT KNOW, ETTA IS NOT THE ORIGINATOR OF THAT SONG, NAT KING COLE AND SOME OTHER GUY ARE...SHE JUST MADE IT FAMOUS

Gracie, MD   February 6th, 2009 10:11 am ET

OKAY I think you can REMOVE this story. It's OLD news now.

Disgusted and Dissappointed   February 6th, 2009 10:09 am ET

UM EXCUSE ME PEOPLE, BUT DID ANYONE NOTICE SHE SAID TO THE CANADIANS "YOUR PRESIDENT" UMMM, ITS CANADA YOU DRUNK...OBAMA ISNT THEIR PRESIDENT!

BLH   February 6th, 2009 10:08 am ET

Well, I feel that Etta James is a Beautiful singer. But for her to talk about Beyonce , that is showing that she is bit childish. Is she mad that Beyonce can sing her own sing better then her? She had no problem with her doing the movie , but all of the sudden because she sung to the President Etta has a Problem with it. She is just upset that she didnt get ask to sing. Thats all that is and if you ask me Beyonce did a beautiful job.Even thou it is her song, Grow up people sing other people songs everyday. I mean she played your life in a movie come on get over it! And to be honest its really not even ETTA JAMES SONG!

Doug   February 6th, 2009 10:07 am ET

Nothing more than the opinion of a has-been. Every time I hear Beyonce sing a ballad, I am awestruck. She's a fantastic talent....and it doesn't hurt that she's easy on the eyes as well. : )

Larry   February 6th, 2009 10:05 am ET

Etta has wisdom,the majority didn't.

Penny   February 6th, 2009 10:04 am ET

nt   February 6th, 2009 10:04 am ET

If he is not 'her President' then why is she so ticked off that Beyonce sang for him?

B   February 6th, 2009 10:04 am ET

Are you serious? You were almost in tears watching that dance? What a joke........

TZH   February 6th, 2009 10:04 am ET

Seems to me that Etta might be suffering from more than jealousy. There may be some issues with dementia. It can take the kindest people and turn them into someone else. One can only hope that she realizes what she has done in a time of clarity and apologizes for her behavior.

Larry   February 6th, 2009 10:01 am ET

Etta has wisdom.

kat40915   February 6th, 2009 9:56 am ET

eh...hey Robert- in case you didn't know, Etta James is black. As are Obama (well, half black) and Beyonce, last I checked. Therefore, your statement is ridiculous.

Ruth is everywhere   February 6th, 2009 9:55 am ET

Etta should have talked to the Dixie Chics before doing this, it didn't work out so well for them.

Jay   February 6th, 2009 9:54 am ET

Poor thing. I think some of that hair dye soaked in–she's not in her right mind.

Doug   February 6th, 2009 9:35 am ET

Etta now has millions of Americans wanting to see her harmed, and most of them probably would like to see her die as well. This is what happens when you speak your mind and it is not what liberal Democrats want to hear.

Just like Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat on that bus, saying you are not a Democrat when you are black in America today is the exact same struggle for equality. Thanks to James, one of the few civil rights heros of the 21st century.

RG   February 6th, 2009 9:34 am ET

Put yourself in her shoes. She's been singing the same song for 50 years, and when the big moment hits, they call on someone else. Etta probably sings this in her sleep, maybe even snores the tune.

CD   February 6th, 2009 9:32 am ET

You liberals are pretty entertaining. As I recall, when the Dixie Chicks had said something similar, it was "good for them". Now it, "Go back to your own country". Shows the hypocrisy thats 'justified' for anyone supporting a democrat.

Frank   February 6th, 2009 9:32 am ET

Etta James is the real thing. Beyonce is commericial.

Etta can say what she wants. Obama is not my president either. I did not vote for him.

Isn't it true that Barack Obama is just as much white as he is black?

bobby   February 6th, 2009 9:31 am ET

You all might think that Etta "originated" At Last, but you are very wrong. Check out Glenn Miller's rendition in 1940 !!!

Kaye   February 6th, 2009 9:31 am ET

As I recall Etta stole the song from Dinah Washington who recorded it before she did.

john   February 6th, 2009 9:30 am ET

She's Spunky!! Beyonce is average at best, but the media has shoved mediocre people down our throats for years, just like the President.....mediocre.

California Gold   February 6th, 2009 9:29 am ET

Etta James is an icon in American music. "At Last" is her signature song. Beyonce does a good imitation, but Beyonce is NOT Etta James. Etta James is the real deal and her earthy, soulful rendition of "At Last" is why Beyonce sang it like she did: imitate Etta James. Same inflection, same slow beat, hold the same notes, etc. Beyonce has a better body, better wardrobe and better wig. Furthermore, Etta James is just about the only one on the planet who can dis Beyonce and get away with it. Notice no one in the music industry is siding against Miss Etta. No way!

Robert The Man   February 6th, 2009 9:29 am ET

Folks.........free speech. Etta say whats on your mind.

LV   February 6th, 2009 9:26 am ET

This is just shocking!! Why do people have to be so mean? Beyonce is one of the great singers of the new generation. And the slow dance between the President and first lady?... it had me in tears.

houston chic   February 6th, 2009 9:26 am ET

what's ghe big fuss ablut Etta? seems to be to me even if President Obama asked u to sing you wouldn't..because remember...he's not your president! get over yourself...you're wayyyy to old to act in that manner! Grow up!

Truth Hurts   February 6th, 2009 9:26 am ET

You can sing any song you want as long as you do not profit off of it!! Thats what copyright is for. Beyounce has not broken any copyright rules or policies!! It is so many re-makes of people songs that would make you head spin. No two people can sing a song exactly alike anyway!!

Bill   February 6th, 2009 9:25 am ET

She is right. Etta probably went through alot for her rights and Beyonce gets to perform her song. I smell lawsuit.

Kevin   February 6th, 2009 9:25 am ET

She's sounding like a whiny, cry baby. Her Song? Get real. She sang it but she doesn't own it. She's acting like a two year old throwing a tantrum and then threatening another artist. Who does this tired hag think she is?

Democrat in Carolina   February 6th, 2009 9:24 am ET

This is newsworthy! Obama spent millions trying to impress at the inauguration and he could even ask Ms. James to sing HER version of the song that made it so popular. Sounds like Miss Beyonce better watch her back! Ms. James is on the loose!

Motown   February 6th, 2009 9:24 am ET

Etta belongs in the Hall of Shame!

CnoMorePalin in N.C.   February 6th, 2009 9:24 am ET

Bobstradamus   February 6th, 2009 9:23 am ET

The reason you see stuff like this in the news is to distract the public from real issues. This isn't the first time pointless news has been broadcast...The Casey Anthony Saga, John Travolta's dead son, Jessica Simpson's weight, Britney Spears, Angelina Jolie's latest adoption, Brad Pitt's hair relaxer etc. etc....The news puts stuff like this out there to keep everybody dumb as a rock so the people at the top can do what they please. Cnn isn't the only network to do this. Keep sipping the freedom kool-aid people!

sherine   February 6th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Etta your are a bitter fat ugly lady.Beyonce keep shining you are a star. One love from jamaica w.i..Mr president you can!!.

Just a Mom   February 6th, 2009 9:23 am ET

I've never heard of Etta James and I suppose it's not against the law for an entertainer to criticize our president while in a foreign country but, I bet the Canadians booed her; the Canadians I know have a very favorable impression of our new president.

Lin   February 6th, 2009 9:23 am ET

Etta James misses scheduled concerts. She missed a major concert scheduled in the Detroit area within the last few years. You can't plan a gala event around her.

linda   February 6th, 2009 9:22 am ET

No one sings "At Last" like the great Etta James. She ain't the late, great Etta James so why send an impostor when you have the real thing? And to suggest she had 15 minutes of fame is outrageous. She is a legend and her rendition of songs, no matter who wrote them or recorded them as well, will be around for decades to come. Maybe Etta wasn't gracious about it but hey, it's more publicity for the movie which is why Beyonce performed it at the inauguration in the first place.

KJ, GA   February 6th, 2009 9:22 am ET

I'm not a huge Beyonce fan, but Etta should just be happy that song was recognized and be gracious about it, gheez!

Jealous and tad bitter...quite sad

Rod   February 6th, 2009 9:22 am ET

This is the deal.....Etta is old and probally a very cranky and bitter woman because she is not up there with the ranks of Aretha Franklin or a Patti LaBelle. Etta only has one song worthy of noting and she's how old? Finally her opportunity for fame and a young thing Beyonce (who has very limited talent and lips sings at her concerts) is stealing her shine. Well Etta forgot that she wasn't the first to record the song and she probally stole the shine from someone else before Beyonce.

Sometimes you have to know when to just sit back and shut up and just reflect over life. She did more damage to herself than Beyonce.

Brendan H., San Antonio, TX   February 6th, 2009 9:21 am ET

It's a good thing Francis Scott Key didn't behave the same way!!!

What Etta James should be asking is why nobody asked her to the White house Gala to sing the song – that's the real issue here!!!

In the meantime, Etta, enjoy your concert tour of Canada; I hear you're performing in Newfoundland next.

debbie   February 6th, 2009 9:20 am ET

People, dont be so harsh on the old lady! I rolled on the floor laughing! I love it! I love to hear the elderly speak their mind, and I respect them with a whole-hearted kindness, and at times, they, like children say and do comical things, whether we like it or not! Etta James has earned her right to speak!

KEVIN   February 6th, 2009 9:19 am ET

GO ETTA!!!

rhiannon   February 6th, 2009 9:19 am ET

And, seriously people, if Beyonce couldn't carry a tune, she would not be a pop diva, so please let's just be real, k? They're both great singers, Etta's just old and has issues with her fading fame.

Carl from MI   February 6th, 2009 9:18 am ET

Give it a rest already, CNN!! You got over 600 comments on this story yesterday... are you going to milk this for all it's worth or what?

Oh BOO HOO for Etta James!! She wasn't invited to the party to sing a song that she didn't even write and wasn't the first person to make it famous. Newsflash: David Lee Roth wasn't invited either!!!

As with many singers and movie stars... the world just isn't big enough to hold their gigantic EGOES in the upright position.

She can just grow up...

Just Me   February 6th, 2009 9:18 am ET

I like Etta, President Obama, and Beyonce... I think Etta is frustrated that she was not asked to sing the song herself yet you have to realize Beyonce is a popular singer so in a way Etta should celebrate because her song was sung by a person who just played her ... I think it is a win for all ... it will always be known that "At Last", a song made popular by legendary singer Etta James, was sung, as the President Obama and First Lady Obama danced, by popular singer Beyonce for the president and first lady's first dance at the inauguration ball(s) ... I think Etta expressed her frustration in the wrong venue at the wrong time...
Why do American artists go outside the US and talk trash as if the American public will not hear about it?

AB   February 6th, 2009 9:17 am ET

Beyonce is better to look at than Etta...Etta is just bitter & being ugly about it – she needs to get over it & grow up!

Moses   February 6th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Okay, now Etta may be a bit bitter that she didn't get offered to sing her famous song "At Last", which I think is understandible. The fact is Beyonce did a great job, but can't nobody sing that song like Etta James baby..I heard Miss james sing that song in person, and that woman puts Soul in that song like you've never imagined..She brings tears to my eyes. She may be acting like the an Old Diva at the moment, but the fact is she is a Diva, and the woman has earned her due respect."At last" is Etta James song of songs, and I'm sure she is just hurt deeply ,that at such an important event in history, someone else would be asked to render it. So if you all can't feel that, tough cookies!!

John   February 6th, 2009 9:15 am ET

You people need to get a real life!

Mickie   February 6th, 2009 9:15 am ET

Gee, I hope she has never sung anyone else's songs when she performs. Beyonce did not go out and record the song but was invited by the President (a little green eyed monster showing, eh). I thought you would have been a little more gracious, but I was wrong - you're just as greedy as all the rest of the performers!

jane   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

I agree I don't know why this is news. Its obvious this washed up heroin user has lost her mind. But to put thinks in perspective "At Last" is not even her song. She did not write the song, she wasn't even the first - or second - to record it!

Glenn Miller did it first in 1942, followed by Nat King Cole in 1957. Etta got around to recording it in 1961.

Highly Favored   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

The celebrations surrounding the Inauguration festivities were in honor of President Obama and his family. It was their choice, and rightly so to choose whomever they please to participate in this celebration. The President and his family are still youthful, as well as a sizeable portion of his constituents. Therefore it is befitting that he would choose relatively young artist to take part in this celebration. I’m certain it was not a slight against Ms. Etta James. I’m disappointed that she would debase herself and dishonor our President in such a public setting.

BTW, for all those who state “He is not my President” I beg to differ. If you live, work and play in the United States of America; then he most certainly is your President. However, the alternative is to move outside of the U.S.A. If I can speak for the majority of the true Americans, we will not miss you . . . Good Bye!

Eyckie   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Everybody sings everyone's songs and if that's what Obama requested her to sing well then she sang it. I wonder if Etta James has every sung anyone else's music before. It's too bad she doesn't like Obama. Listening to her speak it's apparent that she is one of the Republican base that has the low IQ and carries a gun.

Eric Ragle   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Unless Ms. James is prepared to renounce her American citizenship, then yes, Obama IS her president.

Ken   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Beyonce has absolutely no talent and gets more credit than she deserves.

She can't sing and she can't act.

Denise   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

Judging by her slurred speech, I'd say Ms. James apparently had been drinking. Most of time, alcohol does loosen one's tongue and allows true words to spew from the mouth. This clearly is what she was feeling in her heart. Out of respect, she should have been given an opportunity to sing "her" song, however, Mrs. Carter has revived the song and Ms. Jame's name. Ms. James should be forgiven for words spoken that I'm sure she now regrets. Mrs. Carter should feel no remorse being honored to sing it. Lesson learned - watch what you say when you drink. It may come back to haunt you when you're sober.

Vicki   February 6th, 2009 9:14 am ET

No seems to realize that "At Last" was originally performed by Ray Eberle with the big bands back in the 40s. My 83 year old husband really dislike's Etta's version...he prefers the "original"

Tyrone Jackson   February 6th, 2009 9:13 am ET

It's funny how everyone is so up in arms about Beyonce singing Etta's song. At least she didn't sing "Bills" or "Bootylicious". Obama would have probably started bumping and grinding had she sang one of her own songs. She and Micheme O. could have made a Obama sandwich on the presidentual ballroom floor. Maybe we would have gotten to see the "REAL" Obama.

Stephanie   February 6th, 2009 9:13 am ET

To Ken,

President Obama does not have to be "your" president, BUT he IS the President of the United States. I understand Ms. James feelings, and believe out of courtesy there should have been an agreement between Ms. James and Beyonce. Speaking out in public the way it happened, is a disgrace and a way of airing out dirty laundry. People should respect one another regardless of the situation. We should all pray.

natkat   February 6th, 2009 9:13 am ET

I am appauled at this statement from Etta James. Someone that should know better than to diss the president of the United States in anger over a song! In addition to be angry with Beyonce; a young woman that sang that song with grace and beauty! This is unfortunately a very bad example for those who know about the struggles we have encountered in this country and this is all she can say? It doesn't even deserve any media attention but it's here and again.....ETTA JAMES–Let it go......it's time to move on and get over feeling someone forgot about you. It may be your song but Beyonce sho nuff sang her face off! She needs to record it for the record books along with Arethat's version of My Country Tis of Thee...and yes; HE IS YOUR PRESIDENT–ACCEPT HIM!!!!

Sharon, Minnesota   February 6th, 2009 9:13 am ET

Justice 4 All   February 6th, 2009 9:12 am ET

Beyonce did a fabulous job, and I don't think that there was any slight against Ms. James. Just out of curiosity, if she did not vote for President Obama, and does not support him, why would she be mad that she was not selected to sing at the Inauguration. Whether she voted for him it is obvious that she has no good intentions with her negative views. Time for change – stop your bitterness Ms. James.

natkat   February 6th, 2009 9:12 am ET

what makes her think it's "HER" song? She did NOT write the song and was not the first one to preform it... old jelous cow.

Clay   February 6th, 2009 9:12 am ET

Well, I guess that's one way to grab a headline; but, maybe you should do what you've done for the past 40 years...just sing. You're still a legend. Let Ms Beyonce have her day in the sun! The President was not elected because of his big ears, we elected him because of his great mind, and great vision. Focus less on the ears, and more on the man. show some respect and honor, he is the President of The United States of America,,,"At Last"!!!!

god. she needs to grow up.

Adam from Ohio   February 6th, 2009 9:11 am ET

Etta James needs to stop drinking before doing interviews.

Freddy   February 6th, 2009 9:11 am ET

Ms. Etta sounds bitter....

CAW   February 6th, 2009 9:10 am ET

Etta....sista.....if anything you should be honored. I realize that you are at this point quite antique, but really....is there nothing celebrities wont complain about? Anything to get back on camera right? Beyonce.....pay etta her respects....give her her royalties....then leave her alone.

JB   February 6th, 2009 9:10 am ET

It's good to see that not everybody has Obama mind sickness. Go Mrs. Etta James.

karen-Phoenix   February 6th, 2009 9:10 am ET

This should NOT even be discussed!

JA/TN   February 6th, 2009 9:09 am ET

etta get over it, a new generation can appreciate you now, otherwise we would have t wait for a history program

eugene taylor   February 6th, 2009 9:09 am ET

Wow....I think Etta may have a credible point in that she should have been asked to perform the song....Aretha Franklin was asked to perform...Sometimes respect or the lack of respect makes people act out....I do not condone her statements..to which I feel were very ill-concieved and spewed a child like hatred...Anyhow, Michelle did not feel too kindly about Beyonce's adoration for her man either...where is the news flashes about that.....Etta please be easy and watch your mouth...we do understand that you have a valid gripe...but I think before you make a fool of the American people......He is our president, even with his ears and all!!!!

Veronica   February 6th, 2009 9:09 am ET

He is my president Etta, and I didnt want to share it with you, anyway..

Beyonce and President Obama,rock!

James   February 6th, 2009 9:09 am ET

She never actually said anything about Obama. She was talking to Canadians when she said "your president"..."isn't my president". She was saying the Canadian president isn't her president.

Aevon   February 6th, 2009 9:08 am ET

and where are all the neocons screaming disrespect for the president and banning her music, death threats, kind of like when one of the Dixie Chicks made the comment about Bush? so it is only disrespectful and unpatriotic when it's your guy, but couragous and patriotic when it's the guy you don't like?

pdwashington   February 6th, 2009 9:08 am ET

The comments from the writers stating "he is not your president" is very distasteful. No matter how you feel or how you voted...He is the your President unless you live in another country besides the United States of America. We were not all happy when Bush was president, but regardless of how I felt, he was still president of the county in which I reside. Please grow up and recognize that we are all in this thing together and if Obama fails, we all fail.

Denine   February 6th, 2009 9:08 am ET

You mean she's still alive!?!

Aristotle – I was thinking the same thing. What a dope!

gina   February 6th, 2009 9:08 am ET

Beyonce can't sing

and

Obama can't lead as president!

Etta is right

Brian, Decatur, GA   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

A little harsh, but I can understand how she feels. No one can sing that song like Etta can!!

Abuck   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

First of all, although her version is probably the most memorable rendition of the tune, Etta does not own that song. It was written in the 40s by a couple of guys and first made popular by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Second ... Etta, don't you realize that imitation is the highest form of flattery?

And third ... this has what to do with the tanking economy?

Jam Master Mike   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Love how there are those who are posting that say that it's great that she is black and not supporting the President.

I mean when Bush was in office there were white people who didn't support Bush.

Just because one black woman voices her opinion doesn't mean it is a end all be all case study on how blacks don't like Obama.

You guys who commented about it are just ignorant or just plain stupid.... but you are entitled to your opinion, as am I.

Sye the Pychic   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Beyonce is so overrated I named a garden tool after her.She has an average voice with a hot bod.

Brad   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

This was a pathetic attempt to draw attention to herself by Etta James that only resulted in her diminishing herself. She really sounds jealous and bitter that she has somehow been forgotten. It's really sad.

Is this bitterness because she wasn't invited to the inauguration? She could have gone like anyone else if she had really wanted to go, but she sat on her butt waiting to be invited by someone. Life doesn't always work like that..

How many people would remember her if Beyonce hadn't portrayed her in the movie Cadillac Records? Hardly any.

And what's this "He's not my President" garbage?

E POP   February 6th, 2009 9:07 am ET

Sounds like a HATER to me...

Tim   February 6th, 2009 9:06 am ET

Tell'em Etta!

Etta is right.:
- Etta was the originator of the song and Obama should have asked her. – Beyonce can't sing
- Obama has big ears

Obama was disrespectful as usual!!!

Al   February 6th, 2009 9:06 am ET

CNN is lame for even featuring this so prominently. Why don't you guys focus on real news?

Anonymous   February 6th, 2009 9:06 am ET

Etta is basically mad that President Obama asked Beyonce to sing her song its very distasteful of her to go about how she feels about the situation it shows how small minded she is

Anonymous   February 6th, 2009 9:05 am ET

Tell'em Etta!

Just goes to prove that any measure of success does not bring with it an equal measure of wisdom, again. This fool, James, was in Canada asking the people in the audience about 'their' president? Is she really as dense as depleted uranium or are all those years of Afro-Sheen use finally catching up to her in the form of greasy synapses. THE FOOL WAS IN CANADA!!!! She does realize that Canade, whilst on the same CONTINENT, is not the same frican' COUNTRY. Idiot.

Lyle Pepper   February 6th, 2009 9:04 am ET

I just watched the interview with Lansings mayor and then the man with cnn said he didn't believe that the manufacturing base had anything to do with our security, well who the hell does he think will build any war equipment that we may need to protect ourselves, china or japan, they will probably be who we are going be in war with, the auto industry savedd our hides during world war two and now we don't need blue collar workers, it is people like him that has ruined us.

moose   February 6th, 2009 9:04 am ET

Please CNN, stop posting all this gossip crap! This should be on Entertainment Tonight. It has nothing to do with politics.

Dionne   February 6th, 2009 9:03 am ET

First of all, Etta James needs to get a grip! This is not HER song. It was recorded twice before she recorded it. The first time was by Glenn Miller and the second time was by Nat King Cole. Etta James version just happen to cross over more. Sounds like a bit of jealousy because Beyonce had the opportunity to perform for the president. All of a sudden she can't stand her...Etta, go back under a rock where you came from. Didn't even know you was still alive until they decided to do a movie about you!

Joe   February 6th, 2009 9:03 am ET

But Beyonce is SOOOOO much hotter....

Rhonda   February 6th, 2009 9:03 am ET

First of all, People this is not news worthy. Second, to "Ken" the "NUT" who said Obama was not "his" President, then move to another country, because the last time I checked, Obama is the President of the United States of America. So he is the President of every Citizen of these United States, like it or not. Just get over it!!!!!

Thomas   February 6th, 2009 9:03 am ET

I have to confess that before reading this article I had no idea who Etta James was.

Is she some old singer from the past?

Kitty   February 6th, 2009 9:02 am ET

I actually see her point. Beyonce sang her song! And Beyonce is awesome, but Etta James is the original, and I think she should have been given the right to represent that song on that night. It is not a legal issue, but it is an issue of consideration and respect. What if they had asked Katy Perry to getup there and sing "Respect" without first asking Aretha?

samuel fordjour   February 6th, 2009 9:02 am ET

she is just an old jealious witch.

Snare   February 6th, 2009 9:02 am ET

I might have agreed with her otherwise, but Etta covered the song too. It's not "her" song.

Really?   February 6th, 2009 9:02 am ET

Why is this news? And why is topping today's stories when we have stimulus issues?? God love ya Etta James, but most of us don't give a eff!

mb   February 6th, 2009 9:02 am ET

KDG, I agree with you? I would like to know if Etta was asked to perform the song and couldn't? Young people sometimes forget the struggles of those who came before them and paved the way for them through/in the movement. I think an apology to Etta is due from Beyonce and the staff that put this together. But putting all of that aside, I am sure she is sorry for making the remark about President Obama.

Aevon   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

uhh.. yes he is your president. he won the election with the majority of the votes. whether you like him or not, he is the Commander in Chief. i despised Bush, but the were still my president. not my choice, but still my president.

beanne   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

Yes if Etta is still able and willing she should of been the one to sing that song it would of has soooo much more meaning..and would of sounded better too.......The fact that he had some hussy up there singing that song really dimished the meaning

MIKCTR   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

I think it is PATHETIC that the "news" and media even consider publishing things like this. What if Etta was just joking around with her audience and really has no riff with Beyonce or President Obama? Personally, I find it lible and slanderous. If not in acutality, at least ethically. It's not news, people! Do people now days reeeeely have so little to do that they WANT to hear this crap?

dag   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

I agree with the person who wrote "this is not news", however I definitely do believe that "At Last" IS Etta James song and should have been the one to sing it.

Blonde   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

I Thought Etta was dead!

obama-mama   February 6th, 2009 9:01 am ET

What an old washed up idiot

gina   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Well this was a big unprofessional. I mean they had to get the rights to sing her song. He song is probably butchered by 100s of people a week....at least Beyonce has a voice. She is by no means my favorite voice...but at least she can carry a decent tune. This is just too funny...and pathetic at the same time

Silly   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Supporting or not supporting Barack Obama has nothing to do with smart or not smart...it boils down to what you think is important and your values. Nobody should condone these comments...they are foolish and to those who say "thank God a black person has the balls to stand up to Obama", it sounds really shallow. There are black people who did not vote for Obama. But just like most white people voted for McCain. most black people voted for Barack Obama. And lastly, Obama is everybody's president, whether you voted for him or not. However, if you'd like to ignore the truth, you can definitely keep saying that he is not your president..nobody is going to try to take that right away from you.

Linda   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

There must be more to this story than we are hearing... though it isn't really much of a story, quite frankly. They should have asked Etta to sing the song – though it technically is not 'her' song, her delivery of it is the best.

Mike   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

DISSES, disses!! CNN just because Obama is considered black, why would you use black slang in the title of this article.

As always, you are pathetic or a SKANK!!!

Lori   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

@ Ken:

Is every uneducated, redneck white man a Sarah Palin nut? It is not only black people who love our President. There are millions of white people in America (including myself) and the world that admire and respect the President. That is why McCain and Palin lost. It wasn't just the ethnic vote that got our President in power, it was also (gasp) white people.

If PRESIDENT OBAMA is not your President then you must be moving to China, Iran or someplace else because the last time I checked he was the President of the U.S.

Stay ignorant (and high) like Etta.

MAD   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

It's a pity Ms. James decided to act this way instead of behaving like a "Grand Dame." She just looks like a "Bitter Old Broad" now.

Correction   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Correction, "At last" is Glenn Miller's song.

al   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Who cares what this washed up "singer" thinks. Talk about sour grapes.

Chris   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

@ Kevin in Ohio.

That's a pretty stupid thing to say. I'm white and I had no issue criticizing Bush. Should we be afraid to speak up against people of our own race? Think before posting.

MsBlake   February 6th, 2009 9:00 am ET

Mary & Dave–must the conversaton center around race?

Blacks are no monolithic group. There are varying opinions and ideals.

Mary, please do not start the conversation on what has held "Black Folks" back...this may take a while

Eric   February 6th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Disgraceful CNN. What relevance does this story have to the real news going on in the world today? Here I clicked on the link to see if she was criticizing Obama's handling of the genocide in Darfur or some other important issue like 7.6% unemployment, but "big ears"... come on! I thought CNN was supposed to be responsible journalism, not editorializing and tabloid garbage.

Boo   February 6th, 2009 8:59 am ET

I don't blame her for being upset. When you hear 'At Last', you immediately think of Etta. Inviting Beyonce to sing it at the ball is a slap in the face.

canadian moose   February 6th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Although some of us Canadians might indeed wish that Obama was our political leader, we don't actually have a President, thanks for asking.

Sam   February 6th, 2009 8:59 am ET

Someone should tell Etta that President Obama is only President of the United States. Canada has Prime Minister Harper.

Gary   February 6th, 2009 8:58 am ET

Etta, take a deep breath, and try to look at this from another perspective. Those of us who know Etta James and her music, know that this is your song. It's your trademark. Like so many other black artists of that time period, you never received the recognition you deserved. But, things have changed for the better. You were one of the pioneers, and we all know what happens to pioneers. But, you paved the way for others. I don't think I had ever heard Beyonce sing before Inaugartion night, but when I heard her sing your song, I said, "She nailed that." And, I also thought to myself, "What a tribute to Etta James. She must be so proud."
Etta, the fact that they chose your song, and selected such a fine young singer to sing it the way it was meant to be sung, was not meant to diminish you in any way. I saw it as connecting the dots from the days where black artists were exploited, to a day that signified the progress we have made in America these last 50 years.
I hope that you can see this from a positive light, and appreciate the honor of having your song chosen for this special moment in history.
All the best to you, Etta, and thanks for all the wonderful music!

Bev, Town of Tonawanda, NY   February 6th, 2009 8:58 am ET

I too think Etta James should have sung her own song on inauguration day. Beyonce is OK but no one sings that song like Etta. Remember folks, she does have an opinion and is FREE to present it. All of you take a chill pill please.

Scott Hughes in Atlanta   February 6th, 2009 8:58 am ET

Did Etta James complain when she sung the song in the movie? Nope. I think a lot of black folks from past generations are feeling like they're being overlooked in their contributions to our first black president. No one denies that they paved the way, but if you hold us hostage to it and don't allow us to progress and move forward, then what good was it?

Some are trying so hard to make sure you don't forget the past, so that we can have a better future. Yet and still, others are trying so hard TO forget the past so we can have a better future. This "Crabs-in-a-barrel" mentality will keep on pulling us right back in the bucket anytime one of us seems to be making progress.

Forget about the white man. We'll keep ourselves down.

kenneth   February 6th, 2009 8:57 am ET

I did not get that from the Mayors comment. What I got out of what the mayor said was right . We have given over production of goods over to other countries when we our selves can change things if we did have a level playing field. You guys sit behind those desk and try to over talk the people that you bring on your show. If youbring them on then at leastlisten to what they have to say.

Jane   February 6th, 2009 8:57 am ET

a lot to say about nothing, who cares

wendy   February 6th, 2009 8:57 am ET

Etta...take a chill pilll...let it go...you are old and wrinkled and Beyonce is not. Plus, maybe the President knew you were a loud mouth who bashes on people if they don't follow your golden rule. I be Byonce was crying all the way to the bank about your snaggy comment! He is my President and I think he is rock star! Shame on you!

If I were nobody like James, I would thank Beyonce for making my song famous.

GWB2012   February 6th, 2009 8:56 am ET

I don't blame Etta James. I'd be insulted, too. Beyonce – don't you have enough songs of your own that you could have sung? That is pretty tacky!

AshleySays   February 6th, 2009 8:55 am ET

Unbelievably ignorant.

indevoterpa   February 6th, 2009 8:55 am ET

For goodness sake...enough. She is a bitter old woman, but it is her song. Let her vent and be done with it. NEW unemployment numbers are up. take this ridiculous post down and get to something that matters.

George   February 6th, 2009 8:55 am ET

I could ask how this could possibly be "news" – but then again, this is CNN.

It is interesting that the picture you have up shows her posed in front of an advertisement for vodka.

Exactly how bad is her drinking problem these days anyway?

Ann   February 6th, 2009 8:54 am ET

Here's my comment to Etta James' comment about President Obama and Beyonce. I think this woman (Etta James) is suffering from early stages of Alzheimer and her family needs to get her checked out immediately. For Etta James to make a statements about President Obama not being her President, "Get over It" Ms. James, whether you accept it or not, Mr. Obama is OUR president. As far as Beyonce's performances for singing one of your songs at the inauguration, you should feel honored that she sang a song that will always be remembered and made history books. Ms. James you need to THINK before flapping off with your comments in the public eye.

Belle2   February 6th, 2009 8:53 am ET

Okay all you Obama fans, are you not being just a bit hypocritical. Remember how you criticized McCain during the campaign. Even after he paid for the rights to music, you didn't believe he should use it.

Independent Paul from Phoenix   February 6th, 2009 8:53 am ET

Wow, people keep talking about Etta being cold, mean, pathetic...yet these same people were praising the celebs who were attacking Bush. And the Bush criticism was happening before he even got elected.

Gotta love the hypocrisy.

Debra   February 6th, 2009 8:53 am ET

I was appalled at the comments attributed to Etta James! I love every song she ever recorded, however she has lost the respect I once had for her because of her mean, vicious spirit towards 2 people who have contributed immeasurably to African-American history. Maybe she is offended because she wasn't asked to perform, but that is still no excuse for her verbal attacks. I hope I never become as evil and Ms James when I reach her age, and if so pleae put me out of my misery. We all know misery loves company and quite possibly Ms James feels she has to demean others in order to get the attention she once received. I pray her comments about our President and Beyonce were made in jest!

Diana   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

While I can admit that I am not a big Beyonce fan, I can honestly say that Beyonce's rendition for quite beautiful and she did that song justice. Here's a hint to Ms. James . . . if you are an American . . . YES HE IS YOUR PRESIDENT TOO!!!! Please get over it.

Take it light ya'll.

James   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Cristine, are you serious? No one in their right mind would publicly criticize the first black president? Why, because he's black? Believe it or not, there are plenty of people who don't like him or his policies, and have more than enough guts to stand up and say so. Criticizing someone doesn't make you a racist, no matter what the liberals might want you to believe.

I happen to be perfectly within my right mind, and and more than willing to criticize the guy.

Jeff In Ohio   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Unfortunate. Big egos have small minds.

Stan   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Good for Etta James speaking her mind. She's definitely not the only one that feels that way.

Where's all the "hope and change that we can believe in"? Just another typical politician who happens to be half black and half white.

XXX State of the Union   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

Beyonce can't sing

kh   February 6th, 2009 8:51 am ET

You go Etta! At least America has one smart celebrity!

Mandee Bihlman   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

At Last is my all time favorite song.....then I heard Beyonce sing it and sorry to say Ms. James but I prefer her voice over yours. What a childish thing to say, you would think at her age she should know better....

Samuel   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

Etta James didn't write that song, nor was she the first one to record it; it's somewhat mysterious why she should say it's "her song".

Wait, she told an audience in Canada: “You guys know your president, right? You know the one with big ears? Yeah, wait a minute. He ain’t my president.” Are we sure she was talking about Obama? Did she know she wasn't in the U.S.? "Your president" could refer to Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper. Although his ears aren't that big.

Either way she's dumber than a bag of hammers, so why should we care?

Allen Carter   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

This out right stupidity at its finest. Will someone please give me a reason why this musical icon choose to show a side that is unbecoming as a person in the spot light??? She just made a major DONKIE of herself. And I'm sure a major part of her followers are very disapointed at this outlandish out burst. That day/nite, she must have been on something. What??? I have no earthly idea. she should both repent and apologize publicly. I personaly I have no hate nor am I disapointed at her. But my heart does go out to this great women.

uglywart   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

I'm not a Beyonce fan, however Ms. James showed how petty and shallow she is, by the way someone needs to remind her that she's not the original singer of the song, oh yeah, she needs to have a dementia/alzheimers check up done quickly.......

Dee   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

Why would she ask CANADIANS if they knew their president? President Obama is AMERICA'S president.

Stupid old bat.

Greg   February 6th, 2009 8:50 am ET

“You guys know your president, right?” the singer asked an audience in CANADA last week"....

Uhh...last time I checked, Obama isn't Canada's president....or their prime minister....

Mona   February 6th, 2009 8:49 am ET

Ms. Etta James is being very Petty; with the economy in such chaos and her past life an open book; Ms. James should be pleased to have someone of Beyonce's statue sing a song previously song by her. Ms. James should also ask herself, "Why should I sing for a President who I do not accept"? If the answer to this is as her open opinions have confessed, then she herself is a Charlatan.
As far as Beyonce is concerned, the golden rule is to do unto others as you would have them do unto you. If she (Beyonce) feels she did nothing wrong then I applaud her for standing firm and being proud of her performance for President Obam and First Lady Michelle.

TRichardson   February 6th, 2009 8:49 am ET

It's regrettable that this legend is seeking attention in this way! We need CONTINUED unity at this time in America and in the future, I pray that her words are guided by the "all mighty" and the one "down under!!" .

To my knowledge, the two people she spoke about (Obama and Beyonce) haves never, intentionally, harm anyone....in the past and future....she should stop, think and then issue and apology!!!

Michael in Orlando   February 6th, 2009 8:49 am ET

Sounds like Ms. Etta Thang has the Jealousy Jane syndrome. Get over it sister. . . .you weren't selected to sing for our new president! And now all you can do is cry foul?? Shame. . . .

Cathy   February 6th, 2009 8:48 am ET

Thanks for the giggle this morning! Someone PLEASE adjust Ms. James' dosage!!! Well, any press is good press and it's a lot more than the old girl was getting, no doubt. By the way, Obama is MY president and I think Beyonce did a fine job with that old standard.

ijoe   February 6th, 2009 8:48 am ET

very disgraceful

Erik   February 6th, 2009 8:48 am ET

*yawn* Glad this is somehow considered news...my life is so much better because of stories like this.

Jesse   February 6th, 2009 8:47 am ET

Etta James is a bitter loser. She had her day and cannot stand to see others shine. I am wondering why she is even on anybody's radar, when half the people on this earth weren't even born during her 15 minutes of fame.

Kevin in Ohio   February 6th, 2009 8:47 am ET

Right or wrong, its refreshing that an African American actually has the courage to criticize this President.

ugh   February 6th, 2009 8:46 am ET

Shut up ya old bag, anything for attention. Youre out of the spotlight, you had your turn. Just shut the hell up and move on!

Meg in FL   February 6th, 2009 8:46 am ET

The point is....who sings it better??? Hands down, Beyonce! Move over Etta.

HTC   February 6th, 2009 8:46 am ET

It is really sad to see a woman of her age to act like a teenager. She should be grateful that someone wanted to tell her story and that someone as talented and beautiful as Beyonce wanted the role. Etta James needs to sit down and enjoy the rest of her life as a seasoned woman and let the young do their thing. President Obama is my choice.

Jen   February 6th, 2009 8:45 am ET

It's apparent that Ms. Etta James is jealous of singer Beyonce. Only jealous people express themselves like that. I just don't understand the rant at all. It's regrettable to see a legendary singer like herself behaving like a Diva. It's shameful and embarrasing. She making a fool of herself. Also, Ms. Etta James could keep insulting comments to herself. First of all, President Obama happens to look very handsome with his "big ears". Well, I find him attractive. Second, she has the right to vote for whomever she wants, but she should be respectful of others that did vote for Mr. Obama. I think the whole thing is so bizarre. Sounds like a person that wants attention. Very sad.

Dave   February 6th, 2009 8:44 am ET

not all blacks voted for and support Obama, actually that is a test of ones character, morals and sanity to not support him!

Aristotle   February 6th, 2009 8:44 am ET

She said "your president" to a Canadian audience? Idiot

mary   February 6th, 2009 8:44 am ET

This is th ekind of thig that has held black folks back for centuries. Call your president "big eared guy"? If a white person had said this...

Paula Felton   February 6th, 2009 8:43 am ET

This is truly sad and pathetic. Ms. James is surely too old to be have made such statements. Sounds like a little hating from where I sit. It's not Beyonce's fault that her stardom superseded Ms. James's past fame. Perhaps, she should stay in Canada and do all of us a favor.
Her comments are what always sets us back as a Black nation. We all should pray for her, because she certainly needs it.

Norman   February 6th, 2009 8:42 am ET

I love Etta James and highly dislike Beyonce or whatever she want us to call her now, but Etta's out of line with a comment like that. It's a song, it was a party. If she thought that nobody would ever sing her song, one of the more famous soul songs of all time, then she was sorely mistaken. I just think she feels left out.

Stacy from Leesburg, VA   February 6th, 2009 8:42 am ET

Sounds like someone dived into some hooch before hopping on stage.

DONNA   February 6th, 2009 8:41 am ET

Don't people have anything better to talk about. Etta James should be flattered.

Cristine   February 6th, 2009 8:40 am ET

Let's take a step back here... No one in their right mind would publicly criticize the first black president AND a powerful woman who has just reinvigorated their career in the same breath. We know, too, that seniors with Alzheimer's can become quite mean in the early stages before their confusion is apparent. Maybe Ms. James is ill...

Renee   February 6th, 2009 8:40 am ET

Ms. James sounds like a cold, bitter, and jealous woman. Professional jealousy. She is simply mad at the fact that Beyonce was asked to perform the song instead of her. And to tell you the truth, Beyonce sings it a lot better anyway...even compared to when Ms. James was younger. So that is all it is. She knows that without "Cadillac Records" coming out and Beyonce performing at the Inauguration Ball, that she would still be a forgotten celebrity. She should just sit back and bask in the glow of royalties that she is receiving from this movie. Just let it go.

Winnie   February 6th, 2009 8:39 am ET

There's always drama we can't be happy with the situation at hand, our people always have negative things to say

Ken   February 6th, 2009 8:39 am ET

Yes, Etta! I agree, Obama aint my president either. I'm so glad to see a black person with some smarts and is not an Obamanut.

Dianne   February 6th, 2009 8:38 am ET

Well, two things. Etta, get a grip. It's time for the kids to take the reins. Secondly, Etta SHOULD have been the one to sing "At Last." I thought that the minute I realized Beyonce was doing it.

James   February 6th, 2009 8:38 am ET

Etta James is confussed and jealous.

SKY   February 6th, 2009 8:37 am ET

she is sad woman

Paul   February 6th, 2009 8:37 am ET

Sounds like James is not sure about a few things – including the country she is performing in. Canada is not goverened by the US – and Canada has a Prime Minister not a President.

John McCormick   February 6th, 2009 8:36 am ET

What a bitter woman.

Lorna, NY   February 6th, 2009 8:36 am ET

Who cares? This is not news. The country is being held hostage by the GOP and CNN think this is news? You should be ashamed.

J. Eckert   February 6th, 2009 8:36 am ET

Sounds like old age and memory loss is catching up to someone.

Nick   February 6th, 2009 8:36 am ET

"singing my song?"

No. I think technically Glen Miller did it first.

And unless she isn't a citizen, he is her president, whether she likes it or not.

Robin Jackson   February 6th, 2009 8:35 am ET

I pray that Ms. James finds peace in her golden days. She seems so full of resentment, bitterness, malice and envy. What a sad way to exist. Ms. James did not originate the song, "At Last;" Glenn Miller's band did. The song was also recorded by Nat King Cole before Ms.James ever sung it. I pray that Beyonce' and President Obama kindly overlook Ms.James obvious envy and contempt.

NewRI   February 6th, 2009 8:31 am ET

Wait a minute: “You guys know YOUR president, right?” the singer asked an audience in CANADA last week...He ain’t my president.” You got that right, Ms. James, he "ain't your president", since you're, if I'm not mistaken, an American citizen, right???

Jean   February 6th, 2009 8:30 am ET

I think it is a disgrace that this is all anyone can find to complain about. The stars use to their advantage the media coverage to demonstrate their own convictions and in return somehow make even more money for such behavior. These are difficult times for the average Joe out here and they really need to come down off the podium.

KDG   February 6th, 2009 8:30 am ET

While her language was interesting, I have to agree with Etta James.
It is her song and it is lame that she wasn't given the courtesy to sing it. I like Beyonce but she is a poor substitute for Etta for that particular song.

murray   February 6th, 2009 8:30 am ET

Sounds like Etta J. has a bad case of the "green eyed monster." Poor old thing.

xcusme   February 6th, 2009 8:29 am ET

What an unhappy situation. Etta should have been glad someone brought the song she sung back to the forefront. It is not her song she did not write it. A little humble pie goes along way. She's upset because she was not asked to sing it. The torched is to be past to the next generation. Etta... shame on you.

Francisco Burac   February 6th, 2009 8:29 am ET

I think Mrs. James is jealous. Also her comments demonstrate how culturally low she is and more of, how ignorant. She should have been proud that her song was picked for the occasion and to realize that beauty over age was the thing of the moment.

lovelyladyinatl   February 6th, 2009 8:28 am ET

Well, what a blast!!! For your information, President Obama is President of the United States. So if you are an American then he is your President. Doo Doo!! Please stop making ridculous comments showing your ignorance, Ms. James.
I am glad Beyonce sung the song instead of Etta because she is old and stale, the song would not have sounded as rich and lavish should Ms. James have sung the song. Get a life!!!

John Timmons   February 6th, 2009 8:28 am ET

How can Etta James be so jealous. Sounds like an ego trip to me. The celbration was not about her. She just doesn't get it.

1/20/13   February 6th, 2009 8:26 am ET

Etta James a very strong and respectful woman.....I could not agree with her more

Benny   February 6th, 2009 8:25 am ET

Think these comments were in bad taste...it's said she was invited to sing but was not able to attend due to illness....sour grapes.

LISA   February 6th, 2009 8:23 am ET

Etta you need to be ashamed of yourself! You have really put your foot
in your big mouth this time. You need to apology!

Isabel   February 6th, 2009 8:21 am ET

HOW sad that a great singer like Ms. James has to feel so much jeolousy and bitterness against Beyonce and our President. Ms. James needs to get over it! She is of our grandparents' and parents' generation NOT this generation and Beyonce's rendition of "At Last" was soulful and beautiful. Thankfully no other 1940-1950 singers feel such hatred against today's singers performing retro-renditions of past chart-topper hits.

fred   February 6th, 2009 8:21 am ET

CNN, this is not news. I'm not a fan of Obama, although I do hope he succeeds for the sake of our country. I really hope in 2012 we're picking the better of 2 great candidates and not the better of 2 evils. But in all honestly, who really cares what this singer has to say? Who cares what any singer has to say?

kathleen   February 6th, 2009 8:20 am ET

sounds like etta james is all washed up singer and is jealous of the beautiful beyonce.shut up your mouth.

HelenD, Quincy, MA   February 6th, 2009 8:20 am ET

Age should make way for youth. Etta had her day, let Beyonce have hers. Beyonce did a fantastic job. It is just a bitter old woman who won't realize that she has had her day, it is over.

G. Love   February 6th, 2009 8:20 am ET

I heard it on audio and it sounded like a male comedian. It did not even sound like a woman. I do not think it was Etta James who made the ridiculous comments.

Mrs James,

That comment made you seem bitter. A bitter woman can use words to cut a person heart in half. We call you legendary and then you turn around and diss the Prez and Beyonce? I saw the rendition and it was beautiful. I have to give it to Beyonce, she can sing and she is very wealthy behind all of this. Why would you talk about the Prez to some children. You had your time please don't mess up our next generation with that garbage. They have enough to deal with. Mrs James, please think the next time you say anything else. I am really appuald that you of all people would come to this point. Would you rather it been you singing at the ball?

William   February 6th, 2009 8:18 am ET

Seriously? "ain't my president" I can't tell you how much I disagreed with George W. Bush but for the past 8 years he was my president, ufortuately. Democracy happens, someone make that bumper sticker...

Truth Hurts   February 6th, 2009 8:18 am ET

I guess in your old age you get bitter and ignorant!! Beyounce did her a favor by boost up her rep. with the song and movie!! And Etta you are in no physical condition to whoop anybody azz!! Etta you were being disrespectful to President Obama and Beyounce!! She could had disagreed without making those ignorant comments!!

Anne   February 6th, 2009 8:16 am ET

Go Etta!!!! You tell em' -- it's YOUR song !!!!!!!!! My husband and I, educators, are in full support of you. It's nothing less than theft!

Robert Britt   February 6th, 2009 8:16 am ET

And she is in the news why? Because of the person she is complaining about. Otherwise she would still be sitting in her rocker.
Lots of songs get remade and that makes the original composer $$
James should be pleased with publicity not making odd threats to Beyonce. I'm not a big Beyonce fan, so don't take all that wrong. James is a legend, Beyonce may be one someday.

Sharon Northern Virginia   February 6th, 2009 8:16 am ET

I think the honor should have been extended to Etta James to sing her own song. However, it is all over now and Etta should just let it go or pick up the phone and call Beyounce. Stop the public fighting.

john   February 6th, 2009 8:15 am ET

Haha. We should get James and Beyonce in a WWE ring so they can fight it out

Robert   February 6th, 2009 8:15 am ET

I didn't know Etta James crossed over to gangsta rap.

Art   February 6th, 2009 8:15 am ET

First of all, I think the lady sounded drunk. Okay, Obama is not her President, fine, that's her choice.

But if she was a woman at all, tell these folks face to face. What on earth have President Obama done to her.

Since she says he's not her President, maybe that's why she didn't get asked to sing. Folk need to grow up.

Tesap:Savannah, GA   February 6th, 2009 8:14 am ET

I like Etta James, not a beyonce fan, but I think herfeelings were hurt... I mean when I saw bey singing At Last, I asked why didn;t Etta sing it herself...... but her conduct was out of order, I mean she did give her blessing when beyonce plaed her in Cadillac Records... Just hurt fellings here people... move on nothing more to see........... :)

k don   February 6th, 2009 8:14 am ET

I feel in this instance Beyonce should have stepped aside. Really Beyonce should have been introducing Mrs James to acutally sing the song. But you know, Beyonce seems like she has to always be involved in everything. And guess what? No she don't. I like the young lady but enough is enough. SHe is not a Mary J or even Mariah. Sometimes it is just best to say NO!

Alex   February 6th, 2009 8:13 am ET

That "ain't my president' didn't work for millions of Americans who voted for Gore, so it won't work for this huffy broad. He is your president, by a mandate more real than anything GWB ever got, whether you like it or not. Deal with it, just as I had to deal with GWB for 8 looooong years.

Etta James is like a lot of washed up performers that gets upset and say stupid things when the spotlight no longer shines on them. I like Beyonce, and I like Obama. I didn't like the movie Cadillac Records, and I feel that Etta James should be glad that someone showed enough interest in her to talk about her in a movie. She haven't had a hit in years, and should be quiet.

Anna   February 6th, 2009 8:02 am ET

Etta James... shame on you.
What a bitter old woman. Would you have been happier if they asked you to perform at the Neighborhood Ball?
If you are an American– you are not my kind of American.
What an awful, childish display of bitterness and lack of taste.
May you be forgiven for your nasty manner.

Nikole   February 6th, 2009 8:02 am ET

Wow. Dragging yourself back into the spotlight, James?

That's Okay-he's MY president.

Peace.

Larry T. Malinowski   February 6th, 2009 7:59 am ET

It reminds me a bit of Dream Girls when Jennifer Hudson was replaced by Beyonce as Lead Singer and Jennifer singing backup. Beyonce was not my favorite either at the Ball. Her and Jay Z are just people the President and First Lady are much better off without. Stevie Wonder would make a great Musical Director if the President needs one.

kim   February 6th, 2009 7:58 am ET

i cant believe cnn printed this, but i looooove it. go etta go

Sharona   February 6th, 2009 7:58 am ET

I think it's sad that Etta James has tarnished her reputation with such trashy comments. I personally think that President Obama should have reached out to Ettta James to sing the song but he did not. Maybe he liked Beyonce's rendition better? Who knows? I just think that Etta James showed that she is Jealous of Ms. Knowles' youth and talent.

Eric   February 6th, 2009 7:58 am ET

Sorry Etta, but a good portion of this campaign was the bridge to a new generation. Embrace the transition, its not about you and you have no grounds to sustain taking offense.

mainegirl   February 6th, 2009 7:55 am ET

Please stop talking now Ms. James. You are casting a pall on your integrity and dignity. Sounding like a bitter old woman is NOT attractive or desirable. Perhaps your mental faculties are slipping?

Russ   February 6th, 2009 7:55 am ET

"'You guys know your president, right?' the singer asked an audience in Canada last week."

I bet that went over well with the Canadians. Nevermind he's not actually their president, he's almost as well liked there as he is here.

Stephanie   February 6th, 2009 7:52 am ET

Really Etta. What a shame. Sounds a bit like "Hateration". It's one thing to feel the way she does, but it's a whole other thing to voice her feelings. She could have kept them to herself. Common sense says, singers cover tunes all of the time. Beyonce's no different. But, Hey, common sense ain't always common.

Mimi   February 6th, 2009 7:49 am ET

Wrinkly ole Etta is just jealous of yound and voluptuous Beyonce !

ellen sweets   February 6th, 2009 7:48 am ET

oh dear. yet another lamentable instance of the past being unable to step aside for the future. etta james did not write "at last"; a wonderful long-gone singer/composer named arthur prysock did. music belongs to the ages, in addition, james' comments about beyonce, the inauguration and our new president are equally regrettable. james was remarkable in her day. her day is past. if her friends really care about her they will sit down with her, remind her of how wonderful her career has been and that it is now time for her to refocus her energy more positively.

Robert   February 6th, 2009 7:47 am ET

Ha...Ms. James just made herself a walking target and The Most Hated Woman Ever, no doubt.

Thank God she's a black old woman, because if this were anyone else...hoo-boy! They'd instantly be branded about 6-7 things...the kind of things, this day and age, you simply can't be, BUT that are impossible to deny once the label sticks (racist, treasonous, sexist, partisan, part of the Vast Right-Wing Hate Machine™, etc.).

She probably will anyway, now that I think about it...

Seriously, who could ever say such a thing and NOT be one or all of the above?!

;)

The poor woman has no idea what she's done, speaking about His Exalted Highness and Bringer of Light in such a way. And Beyonce too, on top of that? Ms. Upgrade Fierce herself? I'd be looking over my shoulder for Papa Knowles...

But, on the bright side, Sean Hannity might get a new TV partner out of it, so...

Matt   February 6th, 2009 7:45 am ET

The triumph of ego.

Barbara Moses   February 6th, 2009 7:44 am ET

I am confused....REALLY. I don't understand the statements made from Etta James. Is it because she was not asked? It is a beautiful song and very fitting for the president and first lady dance and Beyonce performed as usual...her best.

Apparently Ms./Mrs. James at her age has not learned graciousness, peace and love. Truly I myself am ashamed.

Can we say "BITTERMAN PARTY OF ONE?

Karen   February 6th, 2009 7:42 am ET

I can understand how Etta could be insulted because "At Last" is her signature song. Besides, Beyonce should have known better.... even folks in a choir don't want other folks singing the solo that they are used to singing.

But, Etta didn't have to talk badly about our fabulous President. I am sure that he meant her no harm.

RDW - TEXAS   February 6th, 2009 7:41 am ET

Brian   February 6th, 2009 7:38 am ET

I fail to see where she dissed Obama. Beyonce yes, Obama no. She was in Canada and asked the crowd if they knew who their president was (that would be Stephen Harper) and said oh wait he's not my president.

CNN-This is not political news, which I thought was the subject of "Ticker". The elections are over. Maybe this blog should be moth-balled until the next election cycle so that you can avoid efforts to populate the blog with "news" that has absolutely nothing to do with politics but is reported just because you can insert President Obama's name.

steveo   February 6th, 2009 7:33 am ET

me   February 6th, 2009 7:33 am ET

Robert Phillips   February 6th, 2009 7:33 am ET

I'm sure Beyonce and the song she performed was organized on the president's behalf and not by Obama himself so why be upset at him? Additionally, it should be an honor to have your song performed at such a high caliber event after so many years. Sounds like Etta James is simply jealous that she wasn't the one picked to sing it.

Terry in NY   February 6th, 2009 7:32 am ET

Not Brainwashed   February 6th, 2009 7:31 am ET

Ohh No! Someone spoke bad about the ONE!

Time for the people that are mentally married to Obama (cause once you commit to the lie, you have to stay with it, that's how the human mind tends to work) to tear this woman down and make her look like the most evil woman in the world.

And! NO! I'm not a republican, I hate W. too. I'm just awake to the false left right paradigm. BOTH parties are corrupt trash!

Please look at senate bill 2433, the title looks good, but read the details, that's the REAL Obama.

An icon of soul, a great diva- but unfortunate comments.

But be glad you weren't out in the cold, Ms James. You might have been dragged over the coals by Larry King for your performance, like Ms Franklin was.

Jim in Bisbee   February 6th, 2009 7:28 am ET

So she's apparently upset that SHE didn't get to sing it. I can understand being upset about that, but her reaction seems childish.

I'm guessing that she will apologize in a day if not sooner.

CML   February 6th, 2009 7:27 am ET

Etta must be losing it if her son said she was moved by Beyonnce performance. This is so trivia, Etta needs to be ashame of herself she is jealous that the President didn't aske her. Get over it Etta

H-man   February 6th, 2009 7:26 am ET

I think this is being blown all out of proportion somehow. something is'nt right. Why would Etta and Beyonce' be close doing the cadillac premiere and all of a sudden blasting her for singing at the presidential ball. Maybe someone is playing tricks to the voice of Etta and posted it on internet..who knows man...or Maybe Etta had too many drinks whatever night that was in Canada at some club and was High..It's not out of the question. I was shocked to hear this "MESS"..If it's true Etta needs to get her act together. She is too old and Gracious for this type of ungratefulness of someone who portrayed her without complaints...This sounds like some Janet Jackson, Lena Horne crap...

Zamaly   February 6th, 2009 7:26 am ET

James is just out of order. Let's face it her days is over and the BIG Star she once was. And whether she likes Our President at least MY President she have to deal with. She need to relax and enjoy her self that someone of Beyonce will protray her because never look as good as "Beyonce her her day. Etta get a life.

YK   February 6th, 2009 7:25 am ET

I totally agree with Ms. James. I was not pleased to learn that she was not asked to perform the song at the inauguration and instead they went with the talentless BeYAWNce. This 'american idol' president is all pomp, no circumstance.

sarahlies   February 6th, 2009 7:22 am ET

who cares what the old goat has to say? since she was stupid enough to say he wasn't her president than why in the hell would he invite her to sing that song? She didn't write it or record it first so its not her song.. sit down old lady and get a life you spot light went dim a long time ago..

Ashley Lewis   February 6th, 2009 7:20 am ET

Etta James is being ridiculous..what is the point of what she's saying....the singer sounds stupid and bitter...the pres. with the big ears...what?..and plus she said she was moved by the performance now she is changing her mind all of a sudden..it's not like beyonce stole her song and saying it's her song..Etta James is being outrageous right now and needs to fix her attitude immediatley..there a bigger fish to fry at this point...

Ken   February 6th, 2009 7:17 am ET

Excuse me CNN, but why are you continously pushing this story?

The comments were closed with over 600 comments, but then you hawk this non-news item day and night and reopen the comments.

BTW, wingrtards, you'll notice that we on the left aren't questioning Ms. James' patriotism, like you bozos did with the Dixie Chicks.

Ms James is being petty if she has an issue with Obama because Beyonce sang a song at his Inaugural that Ms Diva thinks is her's alone. If she indeed has an issue with any of Obama's policies, then she should enumerate them.

Funny how CNN will push this non-story, but will completely ignore wingtard Rep. Pete Sessions' comments that the Republicans need to be an insurgency, like the Taliban. I guarantee that if a Democrat has said this, CNN would be all over it like stink on you know what.

DB25   February 6th, 2009 7:12 am ET

Etta was probably drunk. Her comments really don't make any sense.

come on Etta, give Beyonce a break.I looooooove her.she is talented, we just have to admit it.

alot of people tend to confuse her confidence for arrogance but thats their problem.

yeah, Obama has got big ears; so does Will Smith.but it doesnt stop them from being smoking hotties.

Ms. James was wrong to bash President Obama. However, being that she is still alive, she should have been asked to perform and sing her song. It is an over-kill when it comes to Beyonce. She is just an entertainer, it's not like she can really sing. Everyone is paying to see her shack and run around with no cloth's on. Had it not been for JZ, she would have been a distant memory.

With that said, I hope that Ms. James will have an opportunity to be asked to perform her song at events. Beyonce portrayed her, she did create the song. Best of luck Ms. James and please don't bash our President, he had nothing to do with it. Rumor has it that Beyonce begged to be a part of the inauguration.

Etta:

There is a world that knows your name and sound for generations. Unfortunately, our time is moving on and Beyonce represents the future of soul R&B that the people of today recognize.

Old timers like us remember the good times and bad. This generation has to live it now for themselves.

At Last is a beautiful, moving song. It is yours. This country is beautiful and moving. The reins of government were being handed over for the youth of today to carry. Let us not be selfish with our music or government so as to spoil thestart of something that has great promise.

I have to say that I love Etta James, but her comments have made me think less of her. In my opinion she should be proud that someone tries to emulate her, she comes across as a crazy old women. I am sure that was not her intent, but now she her tarnish her legacy.

Ian Bourne   February 6th, 2009 6:51 am ET

I think she's a demented old has-been who can't make up her mind, everyone sings "My Way" and "Yesterday" – neither Sinatra nor the Beatles got vex did they? So she needs 2 take a long walk off a short pier!

Mark   February 6th, 2009 6:49 am ET

Etta, get a GRIP. Did you own the rights to the song ? Did you write the song ? Just becuase you sang it for a long time, doesnt mean anyone else cannot. I dont really care for Beyonce, but if the inauguration entertainment committee wanted her to sing it, so What ? Is it going to cost you anything ? Probably not. They wanted someone young, fresh, new to sing. Stop your stupid publicity cr@p and go off and retire for good.

Matt   February 6th, 2009 6:47 am ET

Does she know that Barack Obama is not the President of Canada?

RS   February 6th, 2009 6:45 am ET

I'd pay to see that fight.

jaye   February 6th, 2009 6:42 am ET

Etta was mad because Beyonce got to sing and not her.

John   February 6th, 2009 6:40 am ET

Bitterness and politics played at all levels...."at last" indeed....

Happy 2009!!   February 6th, 2009 6:38 am ET

Old and bitter!

James Brown   February 6th, 2009 6:31 am ET

What a joke Ms.James is. She is old and her time is gone. I just hate that crab in the bucket thing !!!!!! I heard that she was not the first to sing that song or even write the song. Ms James please just chill out.

Deric   February 6th, 2009 6:27 am ET

Does anyone really care about this? I don't think so!!

shikwan   February 6th, 2009 6:25 am ET

'Playa H8ing' at it's finest!

Larry   February 6th, 2009 6:22 am ET

Etta James a trip

WLW   February 6th, 2009 6:13 am ET

I'm no fan of Beyonce either, but it seems to me that Ms. James has temporarily lost control of her ego.

Dawn   February 6th, 2009 6:08 am ET

hell hath no fury as a woman's scorn!

Jim   February 6th, 2009 5:55 am ET

That ain't even Etta James' song. It was originally a hit for Glenn Miller in 1942.....another hit for Nat King Cole in 1957....then a hit for Etta James in 1961. Time for Etta James to take her Geritol. She should be honored that Beyonce followed in her footsteps. I think Beyonce's verstion was awesome and I normally don't care for cover versions.

ROSE MARIE   February 6th, 2009 5:51 am ET

I THINK BEYONCE SANG AT LAST JUST WONDERFULLY. I AM 71 YRS. OLD AND ALWAYS LOVED THE ETTA JAMES SONG AND ETTA JAMES BUT I THINK HER COMMENTS WERE JUST CRUEL. LET THE YOUNG HAVE THERE TIME IN THE SUN, JUST AS US OLDER PEOPLE HAVE HAD. THE PRESIDENT AND HIS WIFE ENJOYED THERE NIGHT AND LETS JUST LEAVE IT AT THAT.THERE I HAVE SPOKEN MY PEACE.
