Fifty-one percent of those included in a Gallup survey conducted Friday and Saturday and released Monday said passing an economic stimulus plan of some kind was critically important.

WHITE HOUSE (CNN) – Speaking to journalists aboard Air Force One Tuesday, President Obama continued to make the case his top aides have pressed this week: that public support for his stimulus proposal is far stronger than many reports have reflected. "I think if you took a look at the Gallup poll yesterday, the American people don't need convincing,” he said.

Fifty-one percent of those included in that Gallup survey conducted Friday and Saturday and released Monday said passing an economic stimulus plan of some kind was critically important. Another 29 percent said it was important, though not critical. In the same poll, those surveyed gave far higher marks to Obama’s handling of the economy than they did to Republican critics of his plan.

Obama’s foray back to the press area as he traveled to today’s Florida town hall meeting was his third in as many trips - a markedly different approach than that taken by his predecessor, former President Bush, who rarely ventured back into the press area.

The president is holding his second stimulus town hall in the Republican stronghold of Fort Myers, Florida, where median home prices have dropped by more than two thirds from their peak of $322,300.

“We just want to shine a spotlight on how severe this downturn is all across the country and to make sure that members of congress understand the sense of urgency that I feel," said Obama.

President Obama was accompanied on his trip by several Democratic members of Congress. Asked why no Republicans had joined him, he joked that none would come — and quickly added that he was only kidding.

...but there is no support for continuing decades of government incompetence and waste. American citizens did not create our foreign policy and economic debacles–our elected leaders did. Their policies are not the cure, they are the disease.

You have my support on this one, Mr. President.

Here is what to write on YOUR placard to picket your local banks that received fed monies:

It is simple.

"Lend It or Lose It"

I think banks should have to loan/lend every penny, keep track of every penny they loan, and if it isn't loaned by Dec 31, 2009, return it to the Treasury.

Funny the Republicans are looking out for Joe the Plummer... They took the limits for tax cuts LOWER!! 75,000 single down to 70,000 and the 150,000 for married down to 140,000.. now who is helping who? .Which that is fine with me just saying ya know? I think Republicans need to start putting in some support for the Americans. THey are still holding out like they have done over the last 8 years!!!

Bill from staten island ny   February 10th, 2009 5:04 pm ET

President Obama is clearly the leader this county needs at this time in history. I strongly support his decisive action on this stimulus he proposes and has boldly taken ownership of. His leadership provides a glaring contrast to the inferior minds and characters so glaringly exposed by the shrill, empty rhetoric of the conservative stalwarts. He has our support. The citizens of the USA will reward those who have joined him in his efforts, and fire those who have obstructed the process.

Bonnie in Colorado   February 10th, 2009 4:55 pm ET

Several news shows reported this morning that things are not near as bad as the recession in the 70's and the one in the 80's. The unemployment was sky high then compared to now. Also, Bush didn't creat outsourcing. That started back in the 70's. Thos who worked for Hewlett Packard then can attest to that one. Obama is playing his game acting like a fear monger, not a president. He conned people into voting for him with his smooth talk (just like Clinton) and now they are seeing the real Obama.

Susan   February 10th, 2009 4:50 pm ET

It appears we can't move fast enough to put this stimulus package through, but they just announced that there will be a 6 month comment period for the alternative energy initiative for off shore drilling that the Bush administration started. Can't move fast enough on the one hand, but better slow down on the other.
The action causing the biggest waste of money that our government regularly does is to reverse something that's already started and partially or totally paid for! It's especially frivolous if the reason is because the 'other side' initiated it!
I believe in a balanced budget, and I believe that no stimulus package, no matter how great, is going to fix our economic problems. Anybody who's studied economics understands that, if left alone, the markets will correct themselves. Instead of rushing in and committing the U.S. taxpayers to trillions of dollars in debt, that will eventually need to be repaid....sometimes it's best to sit back and do nothing. Often doing nothing is better than doing something that makes the problem worse! Let's all sit back, take a deep breath, and think about what we're trying to do and the consequences of our actions. Then, before we act, let's think it over again.
I don't want my children's children to be indentured servants to our creditors down the road.

Jimmy carters economy was reeaaal great wasnt it. 20% interest rates. The fact is Reagans across the board drop in tax rates creates the longest stretch or propserity EVER.

Those who disagree simply dont know the FACTS.

Bobby   February 10th, 2009 4:40 pm ET

People: if this bill was really about stimulating the economy and helping 'workers' (isn't everyone who earns a paycheck a worker?), then why so much pork? That is nothing more than politics as usual! You are in Obamadenial or too Obamablind to see it!

Take c close look at this 'stimulus package.' It contains way too much money for groups and interests that supported the Obama campaign. You might live in la-la land, but please don't try to tell me that is bi-partisanship. And don't even get me started on what this will cost our children and grandchildren.

The problem with sheep is that they blindly follow each other into the slaughter house.....

michele   February 10th, 2009 4:24 pm ET

I don' t care if you're Republican or Democrat. We're all American. And THIS package isn't going to be good for any of us. Borrowing almost $1 trillion for a package that the President admitted won't fix everything, is insane.

Easy way to fix it: The American people are smarter than most of our elected officials (after all, we can all remember to pay our taxes, right?) So let's divide that $800 billion among the 300 million US citizens. That's $2600 for every man, woman and child. In my household of four, that's over $10,000. I'd be spending it tomorrow, buying appliances, a new car (all made in the USA). Every person spending that money HERE will stimulate the economy and create jobs.

That's "change I can believe in".

Obama Victim sux   February 10th, 2009 4:23 pm ET

The Obama bashers on here are either paid liars, paid idiots, or genuine dummies who are too stupid to realize they are ONCE AGAIN being propagandized into (basically) voting agains their own interests.

All you short-bus-riders have are lies, and SWEEPING half-truth-generalities while NEVER addressing the UNAVOIDABLE fact that REPUBLICANS drove the economy into the ground. IF THE BUSH TAX CUTS WERE SO GREAT.... WHY IS EVERYONE BEING LAID OFF?

Soccer Nana   February 10th, 2009 4:20 pm ET

I support President Obama all the way.

I read, listen, and think for myself. This plan may not be the "perfect" plan, but it is a start in an effort to restore our economy and the lives of our citizens.

Unhappy talk show hosts and radio "negative" personalities do not think, speak, or make decisions for me.

I make and drink my own kool aid, no one else's.

I suggest the "followers" of Hannity, Limbaugh, voter fraud Coulter, etc, actually read the stimulus bill for themselves and not rely on the "wannabe celebrities" bunch. Remember, they get paid well to lie, distort, and agitate. Jim Jones had that kind of control over his sheeples also. We all know what happened there.

Hannity, Limbaugh, Coulter = Jim Jones remix, in triplicate.

Sandi from Arizona   February 10th, 2009 4:17 pm ET

You know it takes a special kind of person (Republican) to spout the same ideas that were used to get us in thins mess as the answer to the mess. All of the conservatives on this bog need to be as responsible as Obama was and admitt the wrong that the Republican party has caused this nation. Regan, Bush1 and Bush 2 all left the economy in worse condition than they got it. The Republican philosophy has never worked and yet the best they can give us now in the time of great crisis is more of the same, except now they want to rewrite history and blame the Democrats for the mess that was the last eight years. Come on now Republicans, there is something so freeing in just admitting that you were all wrong then as you are now.

Kathy   February 10th, 2009 4:15 pm ET

I'm not for it, not for it at all!! To much junk attached, to call it a stimulus, for the growth of small business, big business, where's the incentives for putting people in jobs? Where is in it that the government, get's smaller, spending less themselves?

Where is the incentive to bring our jobs back from overseas? Building and manufacturing products here in the US like we used to. We've given ourselves away, and this joke of a stimulus is not the answer! Let the market correct itself, enhance our own country with the goods we used to produce.

That's my comment!!

Jimbo - st. louis   February 10th, 2009 4:07 pm ET

LIES LIKE A RUG... LIES, LIES, AND MORE LIES.

We are not that stupid. The public is against this overwhelmingly. The new government is stealing not only our money but our kids and grandkids money. We will see some of the new world slavery but our grandkids will be the real slaves. Sad but true.

Wake up America – our government doesn't give a rats ___ about you... big bankers and elite own the media and they buy any outsider when necessary. Obama isn't CHANGE – I knew it last year and I know it now. Tried to tell you but you all thought he was for you. He's for the new world govt. order – educate yourself if you want to at least slow their agenda. CNN is in on it too – they are pawns like the rest of us... just get paid more that most of us.

Jimbo - st. louis   February 10th, 2009 3:58 pm ET

Shame on them!

Patty in the CA mountains   February 10th, 2009 3:56 pm ET

It is strong....most of us want, even desperately need, this to work. We are well aware that the tax cuts offered by the opposition did not work, have not worked and will not work in the future. Republican tax cuts help those that least need help and ignore those that need it most. As usual, though, negative stories bring more viewers than positive stories.

The Democrats in congress did not cause this problem....it was caused by republican deregulation.

When did helping out our "neighbors" start to be labeled "socialist" rather than the "right thing to do"?

Christine Williamson   February 10th, 2009 3:55 pm ET

When, not if, this current version of governance spirals into the dirt and takes all of us along for the ride it will be catastrophic. "Yes We Can" cuts both ways, and there will be enough blame to go to both parites, but it just won't matter anymore.

Rob   February 10th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

The prom's (innaguration) is over. Now we're parked in Obama's car, in the parking lot of the local grade school. He wants to go 'all the way' with us, but we're just not sure. He says if we love him we'll do it. We don't want to (well, the smart ones of us don't), because we know he's just some poser who only looks out for himself. He then tells us that if we don't do it with him he won't love us any more.

In the end he screws us, cause that's what he wants. And you koolaid drinking kooks will just say, "Thank Barrak may I have another."

Hopefully we can hold out for 2 years, then REAL change and recovery can happen.

Jwta   February 10th, 2009 3:32 pm ET

Rachel in Nebraska- why do you think throwing money to schools is going to solve your problems??? I worked with a non profit group in some innercity schools in Cinn OH... let me tell you that no amount of cash will help students who have no respect for authority, and no desire to learn. No sum of money will produce a superior work force when they have been taught they are owed anyhting in life that they need therefore thay take no responsibility for their lives...
throwing money at the gashing wound in our nation will not solve the problem.... There are valad needs a "good" stimulous package can help, but the bulk of what is on the 700+ bill doesn't have any of this. We are not against stimulous we are against special interest groups who have their hands in the pockets of senators and govenors and rep's who use their power and influence in future elections to hold the very men and women who went there to represent us hostage....This package is filled with so much special interest garbage it isn't funny.

Kick out the lobbiers and special interest groups, enact term limits keeping the politicians honest and then we will get somewhere.

I might listen or even go along with Obama on this if he'd said something like "I know support is mixed" or something, but for him to come out making it sound like this bill is a hit with a majority of the public, well, that's another chunk out of Obama's credibilty armor (and a chunk out of our paychecks) BTW increasing the deficit this way is going to all but erase the gains the dollar has made this year.

Christine Williamson   February 10th, 2009 3:31 pm ET

3. If the Democrats are to be the saviors of the U.S. why didn't they act sooner? They have had control of both houses of congress for years, did nothing to avoid this problem and now want us to believe that all will be well if we only borrow enough money from the Chinese.

We elected him President – now let him work! Economist ALL agree this is a necessary evil! Let's just get it done, already! Why does the Republican Party oppose EVERY idea, yet has nothing new to offer............tax cuts, tax cuts, tax cuts!! IF TAX CUTS ARE SO GREAT, HOW DID WE GET INTO THIS MESS IN THE FIRST PLACE!

Jes   February 10th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Jen February 10th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

Yeah, keep telling yourself that Mr. President. Just like "you won" so what you say goes. Nevermind the 50 million plus voters that do NOT support your policies or those of Nancy Pelosi and crew. Why else do you think the PRESIDENT resorted to stumping to the American public? Not because he cares, but because that is the only place where people are still 'mesmerized' by him. He's all talk, and now he's dug a $1 trillion hole. (AND before you say it, so what if Bush did it too. How is Obama different? You think paying for museums in Indiana is going to help me in PA? Why do Obama supporters think two wrongs make a right? Even if it is 'less wrong' it's still WRONG).

I don't know what news you've been watching for the past 8 years Jen, but last anyone has checked, we've been in the largest recession since WWII before Obama became the president.

Maybe you should do a little bit of history checking and you'll find out that Republicans were also in power when the economy tanked during the depression, it took a Democrat to fix the mess.

obambi   February 10th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

Another lie from the new TV talk show host!

Timmy   February 10th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Thank You Mr. President. Your little impromptu message to the Americans was once again filled with doom and gloom. The fact that past history has shown that increased government spending does nothing for the economy, you still shove this "stimulus" bill down our throats. Let's call it what it is.... a "spending" bill. The fact that 51% of Americans approve of this bill is not "overwhelming" support. The reason we are in this economic duress is because the Dem's in the Clinton era made "affordable housing" a God given right. Not everyone deserves to own a home. And now, you are filling the White House with these same people who were part of the legislation that got us in this mess. God Bless America! We need it!!!

Rachel in Nebraska   February 10th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

I feel very sorry for the negative and angry people on this board who criticize President Obama. Neither you, or your Republicans offer any positive suggestions. You only offer no spending or tax cuts. Based on history and REAL FACTS, neither of those things work.
Why are you against the bill? Do you have an economic background?? Do you really understand what a stimulus bill is? I am guessing you don't. And neither do many of the Republicans......
Please try to be more positive! Have hope and some faith and educate yourself more about what has worked or hasn't worked in the past. I know I am wasting my breath with many Republicans. They just don't get it-I don't know if it is anger , being stobburn or a lack of education, but it is simply pathetic that they don't know history!!!
THANK GOD for an Obama administration that wants to put more money into schools. In Arizona, great companies LEFT because they could not find qualified people to hire! Now that is scary....

JC   February 10th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Just like a Republican to only read what they want. The poll released yesterday said that 51% believe the Economic Stimulus is critical but another 29% said it was important, so unless my math is wrong 80% feel the stimulus is important.

Republicans = closed fist! Democrats = positive change!

Bill Walden   February 10th, 2009 2:21 pm ET

Keep marginalizing the country, Mr. Obama. You have also convinced yourself that 50% plus 1 is "strong support" or a "mandate." It doesn't take much to sway the other way. REmember that. Remember that 50 million people did NOT support you. Remember that 50% of Americans do NOT support this bill. Obama's approval rating not withstanding, I, personally, am non-plussed about his picks of treasury and HHS secretaries. Both (inadvertently!) evaded income taxes. Also, it may do us good if he is a tiny bit more bipartisan than confrontational. The GOPs are looking for a reason to launch scathing and vitriolic vituperations

It may be fine for you to say no to it and your a taxpayer ..well hello.... millions out of jobs are also hard working taxpayers so don't speak for them your not the only one paying taxes and neither are others that reject this package. If you have a job just thank God that your not one of the less fortunate ones that wish they did

I agree that stimulus pacakage is critical to this economy . We dont expect it to do magic overnight , but atleast its one step forward. ANyways Republicans have no right to vote aginst this , because they are the ones who caused this situation. IF they are so against it lets ask them to come up witha plan ... which they could not in last 8 years ..

Delusional: when someone believes what they want to believe regardless of the truth staring them in the face.

Dishonest: when someone says the american public doesn't need convincing and then sets out to do just that with last minute town hall meetings to push their agenda.

Dumb: when someone thinks people are stupid and won't realize you had to buy the 3 republican senators to get them to join the bandwagon...millions to specter's pet project brought him on board; not concern for the hurting.

Just having big tax cuts have not worked — that's been tired over and over again without success. I'm not sure what the correct answer is and I doubt anyone does since we've never been in this economic situation before. Craig- Easton, PA   February 10th, 2009 1:05 pm ET

Part of the difficulty of bipartisanship these days is that nearly all of the moderate Republicans have lost their seats and their right wing is doing their best to extend those losses. So all we have left is guys like DeMint and Inhofe who are so far to the right that they don't even accept the basic premise that there IS a problem much less what to do about it. Bipartisanship may end up having to be between the Democratic left wing and the Blue Dogs with literally a handful of moderate GOP legislators still hanging on to their seats.

Ken   February 10th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

He doesn't have a clue! I am not sure who they are polling but it not around me. How can they do anything to put people to work. What are they going to do pay our home loans? This guy just talks and tells the public what they want to hear and then tells you its the Republicans fault he can't get anything done when Dem. really started this mess. Low Income housing or welfare home loans. Obama and the rest of the Government knew they couldn't pay and we are going to do it again.

Mr. President ,public support is running 99 to 1 against your bill from people calling in to there Congressman. The polls say it's 65%of the average people on Main St. are against this bad bill, please step back and listen instead of stepping forward and telling.

VPDesign   February 10th, 2009 12:50 pm ET

Of course the public wants the economy stimulated. However, I just looked at the list of stimulus items that got "trimmed' and those that got "eliminated"....looks like the feds are lining their pet projects and cutting children's/education projects. So NOT cool. Federal & FBI construction will only benefit government contractors while school construction projects would benefit many local private sector economies. Who the heck is deciding on what gets cut...that person needs to be fired!

Jackie in Dallas   February 10th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Yes, I think public support IS strong that we need a stimulus package, but what we need is a SMART stimulus. I'd hesitate to say that the support is that strong for the specific packages we've seen, both the House and Senate. President Obama needs to do some behind-the-scenes manuvering to rein in Pelosi and Reid, or they will shoot the Dems down. Strip a lot of the contraversial stuff out of the package (it only amounts to less than 7%, anyway), and concentrate on help for homeowners and job creation. Leave the other stuff for later.

Dont blame me   February 10th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Obama LIES.

The Neutral Rasmussen poll states that only 37% of Americans support this bailout in its current form.

A poll of Amaericans states that they want a mix of 2/3 tax cuts and 1/3 spending.

This bill is the REVERSE, it is 1/3 tax cuts and 2/3 spending.

Tax cuts are the quickest way to get the money in the hands of the American people.

Obama also LIED when he said that there were NO ear marks in this bill. This bill is FULL of ear marks, they just didn't attach their names to them.

Florence, SC   February 10th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Public support is strong because the dollar is weak. Unless you are a Republican in denial.

Hispanic in Dallas, TX   February 10th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Well, he's WRONG!

I'm a tax payer and I DO NOT support this plan!

It does nothing in the short term and give government too much intervention. Government cannot jump start the economy. A free market can only do that.

Stop jamming this package down the throats of the American people and stop using all these scare tactics for a Dem wish list!

B   February 10th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

I do not agree with Obama. He talks about wasteful spending on the national, political, corporate levels...which I understand. I watched his news conference last night and really hope he can reach his goal of 4 million new jobs. But what I don't get is why this stimulus is filled with purely spending options. $200 million for condoms? Buying new office furniture for the Department of Homeland Security? I'm sure some of the spending measures are good ones, but get serious Obama.

You yourself have the audacity to attack Corporate CEOs for the spending they do and the bonuses they receive....then you fly to Indiana and Florida on the tax-payers dime simply to give speeches. How much did your trip to Elkhart, IN cost the American taxpayer? You want corporations to be held accountable for their expenses...why can't you abide by the same principles? The bottom line is you can talk the talk, but you sure as hell can't walk the walk.

Franky   February 10th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

You know, for the record, states like New York or big cities like Los Angeles have a bigger population than say small states like Rhode Island. Plus, if I recall, mayors, some state governors, etc all have written to Congress to do something, and let me guess...cities don't care?? For the record, they also have feelings too, not just Conservatives...so in essence, you will see a bigger approval among some states, even the Mayor from Indiana had to come out and gave his trust. Like I said, each one is differ, each state is different and so on AND if people don't wanna pay attention to cities like those or don't care about moderates practices like stop smoking in cities like Chicago or New York City...hello, I live in these and I know good friends as well who live! And not to mention where my boy is now, Fort Myers, Florida. And like you said, a Republican stronghold BUT it is probably one of the few states in the country, that has this effect.

Each one is differ and my opinion to everybody, don't alienate people who don't you like because one girl may be stupid enough to get pregnant and does that give you a right to question it?? No!! Mind your own business, is what we say...if you don't care, then for real, I will write to my boy personally to just forget about it. He doesn't need you guys, let alone he cares but he doesn't need you. You just want a voice so you can say something you haven't said these last 8 years...

Be...nice!!!!

Watcher   February 10th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Most people agree that something needs to be done. Even the most staunch Republican opponents to this bill will concede that. The problem with this bill is that it s bloated, more than a third will not address the current economic problems. It may be that these additional measures are needed, but they should be addressed elsewhere. Please don't tack them on needlessly to such critically needed legislation.

Larry Houston Texas   February 10th, 2009 12:44 pm ET

arithmetic is liberal   February 10th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

Just a note before we hear a bunch of "well I don't support it!"s:

Republicans, remember when Bush won the vote with 49% in 2004 and called it a mandate?

Well what does that mean now when 54% of Americans support the stimulus?

Is that like a double secret probation mandate?

no corporate politics   February 10th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

I guess if you can call 53% of the election vote a "landslide"
..and huge Republican push-back "bipartisan"
.. all with a straight face,

then you can call 51% critical in the poll "strong".

Question Authority! We didn't question Bush enough – let's not make that mistake again.
