(CNN)– Vice President Joe Biden and his wife Jill will host a cocktail reception at the U.S. Naval Observatory this evening for new members of the U.S. Senate as well as their families. Tonight’s guests will include lawmakers who filled the replacements for seats vacated by President Obama, Vice President Biden and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Senators Roland Burris of Illinois, Ted Kaufman of Delaware and Kirsten Gillibrand of New York will join several other new senators at the gathering.
The 19th century home, which sits on the Naval Observatory grounds, was built in 1893 and was originally intended for the Superintendent of the United States Naval Observatory. At that time, Vice Presidents lived in their own homes but in 1974 Congress sought to refurbish the home so it could function as the Vice President’s residence. This decision was largely dictated by the economy, as it was deemed too expensive for each incoming Vice President to secure a private residence. The Observatory still functions alongside the private residence as a place where scientists can observe the sun, moon and stars to measure time, as well as to publish astronomical data.

Joe who?
I am glad to see some articles on Vice President Joe Biden. I think is a very smart man and great leader. I love you Joe Biden.
And no doubt the guests of honor will be Olympia Snowe, Susan Collins, and Arlen Specter, the country's new honorary Democrats.
I think there may be a little more going on at the Observatory than CNN has listed..........
Maybe they'll all take turns playing hide-n-seek in Cheney's man-size safes he left behind....
I love how Liberals are continuing to defend Joe Biden's idiotic remarks. When will they concede that this guy is just plain dumb? It is not "Joe being Joe," it is Joe being dumb. Any Republican who made the same mistakes would be skewered and labeled an idiot, but the media and Liberal lemmings continue to make excuses for this guy. Obama continues to throw him under the bus, which is equally hilarious.
JOE AND JILL, PLEASE DON'T STICK A FOOT IN YOUR MOUTH TONIGHT. ENJOY THE PARTY!!!!!
Hmmmm – more Ds than Rs -
Obstructionists, beware. Next year could bring more Ds than Rs again.
What a lovable guy, that Joe. He loves to make everybody laugh. Not too bright, but ya just want to hug him – or smack him, if you're Obama.
In just three short weeks, we've gone from a significant, powerful, decisive vice president to a GLORIFIED WAITER who has to kiss the Russians' back-side to make a headline.
We miss you, Cheney. Thanks for showing us what a REAL VP should be like. Biden couldn't shine your shoes.
Almost three incoming Democrats for every one incoming Republican. 2010: Let's do it again!!
Joes ok with me.Abbott had Costello, and President Obama has Joe.
I hope there are no rethuglicans invited, they've done enough damage to this country without wrecking your home.
