BREAKING: Deal on stimulus

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Wednesday a House-Senate deal has been reached on the stimulus.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid announced Wednesday a House-Senate deal has been reached on the stimulus.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – House and Senate negotiators have reached agreement on an economic recovery bill, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said.

Watch: 'This is the right thing to do,' senator says

"The bills were really quite similar, and I'm please to announce that we've been able to bridge those differences," said Reid, the Senate Majority Leader.

"Like any negotiation, this involved give and take, and if you don't mind my saying so, that's an understatement," he said.

Negotiators worked late into the night to iron out differences between the two versions of the stimulus bill.

So much for this promise from Obama!

End the Practice of Writing Legislation Behind Closed Doors: As president, Barack Obama will restore the American people's trust in their government by making government more open and transparent. Obama will work to reform congressional rules to require all legislative sessions, including committee mark-ups and conference committees, to be conducted in public. By making these practices public, the American people will be able to hold their leaders accountable for wasteful spending and lawmakers won't be able to slip favors for lobbyists into bills at the last minute.

I am proud of the two female senators from Maine.

Can you imagine how many great things our country could accomplish NOW if most of the senators and representatives in Congress were female?

Alot, folks! We women know how to run households, we can run this country!

Wow, more breaking news on Obama tax cheating appointments. It turns our Rahm has been living rent free for seven years in the house of one of his house of representatives buddies. His buddies' wife has been paid all kinds of lobbying money by Rahm's business, and Rahm has received rent free living for seven years in return. Sounds like Rahm has gotten a free car and driver from an employer that he failed to pay taxes on.

    I enjoy the circus music.

Ridiculous, it is loaded with pork. It should be 1/3 the size and focused on small business and tax cuts. I voted for Obama to get "change". Instead, my own party has outdone the monumental spending of the past eight years. Never again.

Jo.....who is looking for a solution from those of us that oppose the bill.....it is quite simple JO....

The average recession lasts 18 months....we are 12 months into this one......wait 6 months for the economy to recover on its own (if you look it seems to have a pattern for doing that).....

During that 6 months shore up the banking system and put some regulations on who these people loan money to (guess what...if you have a sucky credit score and don't make enough money...sorry...no house for you!)....

and STOP WASTING THESE BILLIONS OF DOLLARS!

Fine. But there's one thing I don't understand. What happens to the new jobs and the saved jobs once they're all paid out?

If the local governments can't afford to keep people employed now without FED money what happens when after a year of employment there's no more money?

And most infrastructure jobs do not come under the bid price and typically last longer then bid. At least that's been my experience here in Florida.

The markets didn't really look all that great today with the sub 8,000 dow close, so I'm guessing that Wall Street remains skeptical of DC.

Only thing that seems to be doing well is the precious metals I watch with ExactPrice http://www.learcapital.com/exactprice

Gold jumped almost to $950 and ounce! Silver came within sight of $14 and platinum is surprise me in spite of all the bad auto news.

Just tells me that investors are trying to hedge against the dollar.

Response to Jo 3:38 – Right on! It 's amazing how many financial geniuses are on these boards that can predict with such unequivocal certainty that the good ole U. S. of A. is now bound for certain destruction. Hey folks, it's easy to attack when someone is doing something. I understand how unsettling this must be for conservatives who supported republican congresses that so justifiably earned the label of "The Do Nothing Congress". Where were you folks when Bush and Cheney were squandering our surplus, daragging us into unnecessary and expensive conflicts, handing out billions with no questions asked to Halliburton, and approving the no strings attached TARP bill last year? And all you can do is parrot the FAILED FAILED FAILED strategy of tax cust for the rich?

As my dad used to say, "Don't bring me more problems, bring me solutions!"

  12. Payoff for Maine Senators

The back door payoffs to Maine's two renegade Senators will be a midnight entry, much like the $15 million earmark that Arlen Spector got for his health institute. Pelose gobbled up $25 million to save the salt water marsh in her district which is political payback to several of Pelosi's high roller contributors. While Americans are losing their jobs, their homes, and their retirement savings, Obama, Pelos, Reid, Frank, and others are like hogs feeding at the trough. This is a disgraceful display of gluttony and everything that is wrong with Washington. People forget that the reason George Bush got elected twice was becasue the Democrats were taxing and spending like raving lunatics. This Pork Spending Bill will NOT stimulate anything except the pockets of Dem fat cats.

This is not change. This is criminal. Obama has been hoodwinked. I do not want to believe he did this to America deliberately, but rather it was due to his inexperience.

Obama yells at bankers going on a conference to Las Vegas, while at the same time Democrats are spending $500 million on a Democratic Outing – HYPOCRITE

Let me take the words out of Ms. Palins mouth "God will see it through" If the door opens......well now – this isn't what many in the Republican Party had envisioned was it ?? that is why they were not elected this round – their ideas are done – its time for Change.....and those thinking that it wasn't something they wanted – well – too many want too much.... but we have to start somewhere and its like priming a pump (water) if any of you know what that means – but once it is primed the water will flow on its own with no further help.....this is how I see the stimulus package its just priming the pump – now the rest of us from bottom to top have to do our parts! Just not sit back and wait for more – its on all of us now – Thank you Senators, Congressmen (women) and President Obama and your team....

Thank you is not enough said, but "We'll be back" for the crumbs. Crumbs that are left after Wall St. and Banks get another in billions that will far out weigh what American citizens received today.

I've got just the solution for the House committee which is about to begin deliberations:

Don't give a single PENNY of stimulus money to the subsidized Red States that have received more federal monies back than they've put in.

Don't give a PENNY of stimulus money to the CONFEDERATE states and their treasonous Senators and congress persons who have fought tooth and nail to obstruct this Bill!

That should save just enough to make it acceptable to the conservative back-stabbing Obama/America-haters.

The stimuls package is too small. It should have been around 3 trillion dollars per Paul Krugmen (nobel prize winning economist; someone I think we should listen to) The actuall effects of this pacckage will be negligible.
However, there is a little thing that I learned from the Bush administration. Signing statements can do almost anything to a bill that makes it to the desk of the President of The United States. As I recall, Bush used signing statements on most of his bills. I think now would be a good time for Obama to do the same

T hope that every house republican lost every nickle that would be spent in their district. Ditto for the repulican senators. They all are hateful spoiled brats. especially all the red neck hillbilly politicians throughout the bible belt. Talk about life and beliefsare just plain rhetorics for them.
