Democrats optimistic about reaching stimulus deal

WASHINGTON (CNN) - A Democratic leadership source tells CNN they are now optimistic about getting a House-Senate stimulus deal by this afternoon.

In fact, they are arranging for a formal conference committee meeting this afternoon to start officially drawing up the legislation.

Meetings with key centrist senators and Democratic leaders, which lasted for some nine hours yesterday, are expected to begin again later this morning.

Even after Rahm Emanuel and Peter Orszag left yesterday, and the final meeting in Nancy Pelosi’s office broke up close to midnight, staffers spent the night working on the bill.

Anyone here who is opposed to the stimulus package and feels that it's socialism.. please, do not accept those stimulus checks. Simply put "return to sender" when you receive them and make a real statement... instead of complaining on blogs and then running out to use the money you so stringently complain about.

I have yet to hear a single instance of ANYONE returning a stimulus check that they received last year.

Are you people for REAL?????? There are American people suffering out here! They need help and all some of you want to go on and on about is that same psst poor attitude that you had when President Obama won!!! Bush is the reason we are in this predicament of economic disaster.....not Obama! Where were you people when Bush was asking for all of our tax dollars to fund a ficticious war!! Are you that stingy and ignorant that you can't help your fellow man? Shame on you that are only thinking of your money and not the lives of humans!

@ Barack Wins and Capitalism Loses, who said "Many generations will pay for something done in less than three weeks. It is a sad day for America, and a sad day for my kids, who will have to pay for it throughout their lifetimes."

Give it a rest you whiner. Many generations of Americans will be paying for a problem that has developed as a result of decades of mindless Republican adherence to a failing ideology and willful ignorance towards all the facts and evidence that made it clear. You can't blame the doctor when he cuts off your leg to save you from the cancer in it. The GOP gaves this economy and our gov't the cancer and, to some extent, is part of the cancer itself. You can't blame the Dems for recognizing what economists are almost unanimously saying is necessary. We'll be seeing alot more of that GOP cancer amputated from our government in 2010...I guarantee it.

I haven't figured out yet if Obama is just asleep at the wheel or if he is just a gullible passenger happily riding along while Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid drive the bus off the cliff.

To all the Right posters who 'know' the stimulus won't work, and 'know' Obama will fail, and 'know' we will become socialists (as if they really know what that means).

Here's a few other things you blowhards 'knew' (taken right from your lovely posts)

    – there will be huge riots in Grant Park at Obama's post-election rally, and Chicago would burn
    – Blacks will take over the country with an Obama Presidency and whites will be completely shut out
    – Barack Obama is a Muslim and was not really born in Hawa'ii, it's all a big cover up
    – Obama would not 'make it' alive to Jan. 20th to be sworn in
    – Within a week of taking office, Obama would take away all our guns

I've got lots more where that came from, for all you 'sages' out there who 'know' what the future holds!

Robin: "Anyone see the cover of this week's Newsweek?
"We Are All Now Socialists." This is the cover of Newsweek, mind you.
This could very well be the downfall of our great country as we know it. We are now entering an era of entitlement. Hardwork will be a thing of the past. Anyone else scared?"

We have been a socialistic country from the day our government began collecting taxes to redistribute to various causes. I cannot for the life of me understand why many of you do not acknowledge that fact. Hard work has continued to be practiced by the majority of our citizens throughout our country's existence in spite of our long history of entitlements. It is not likely to become extinct now!

As for being scared...I am not! I stopped looking for the "boogey man" hiding under beds and in closets during my adolescent years when I became educated enough to realize that worry, fear and conspiracies are unproductive. I went to school, got a job, and eventually started a small business unaffected by all of the "gloom and doom" naysayers who want to continue ascribing the boogey man status to our federal government. It is still a necessary entity with all of it's imperfections.

I will continue being a productive member of society and will do my best to offer help when it is needed and remain quiet when I cannot constructively contribute – in other words I will try to be part of a solution and not a problem.

    Have a great day!

This is to "sniffit" .......Although you make a couple of good points, there are other things to consider.....IF Obama would have taken 2 or
3 million or so, to go down there in Ga. when they were having their elections, and took that money to buy up all the Billboards, T.V. Station
Ads / Newspaper Ads / & etc. I honestly think Obama would have gotten the 60 , if they voted IN that Dem, down there....He wouldn't have to worry about going to Elkhart / spending time in Fort Meyers / Going to Virginia / etc...etc....etc... He would have got the VOTEs....
The "60" votes wouldn't have been a problem for him, so in essence,
I think he made a mistake, in NOT going down there to campaign !
I also think Obama is going to have a LONG HARD ROAD for the next 4 years, simply because the Republicans are going to "Buck" him, for EVERYTHING !!
