WASHINGTON (CNN) – First lady Michelle Obama, who has been called a new fashion icon, will grace the cover of Vogue’s March issue.

“'I love clothes,'” she tells the magazine.

“'First and foremost, I wear what I love. That’s what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion.'”

But the new first lady is also pragmatic and is willing to take some fashion criticism here and there. “'I’m not going to pretend that I don’t care about it,'” Mrs. Obama says of negative reviews of the outfit she wore in Grant Park on Election Night.

“'But I also have to be practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear – people just have different tastes. Some will think that sweater was horrible, [but] I was cold; I needed that sweater!'”

The first lady has developed a reputation for spotlighting the work of young, up-and-coming designers with her outfit choices. Her choice of a Jason Wu inauguration ball gown thrust the 26-year-old designer into the spotlight, designer Isabel Toledo also garnered attention because of the ensemble Michelle Obama chose to wear to her husband’s swearing-in, and J. Crew has benefited from the first lady’s affinity for the company’s clothing.

    There's some serious hatin goin on on this board. Michelle is the First Lady and will receive the recognition, the perks, endorsements etc that come with that position. She basically spent the last two years almost aising her kids by herself, working, keeping that fabulous figure and campaigning 2, 3 days a week for the Obama who gets serious love.
    Yet she has remained positive and supportive of her husband throughout. What don't believe me? Isn't that what Obama said on Election Night-that she was his best friend and the love of his life and that he couldn't have made it without her??? Their children no doubt went, and will go many days & nights missing their dad so you can have your President. Yet for all her sacrifice she gets the most hate in the family. I don't understand it. Michelle is one of the sweetest, loving women you could meet. Look at how well behaved and happy, and well adjusted her girls are.
    Get used to it haters-she's the First Lady. On the cover of Vogue-AND LOOKING FABULOUS!

    I wish people would relax a bit. Yes, we're in difficult economic times. Yes, there is a lot of important news breaking around the world. But that doesn't mean we should focus exclusively on those things, moping about wailing "woe-to-us!" Let's try to maintain some modicum of normalcy in our outlook on things, like some light-hearted acknowledgement of Michelle Obama's impact on fashion – it makes it easier to get through the tough times.

    And if you absolutely must se only stories about "serious" news, then don't click on links like this one to begin with! It's as easy as that!

    MICHELLE OBAMA ROCKS!!!

    She is intelligent, beautiful, accomplished, loving to her family and friends, caring, kind hearted and embodies the true meaning of a "First Lady".

    Say what you want, she still looks radiant and happy in whatever she is wearing. Which is all that REALLY matters.

    Sure folks are suffering during this economy but she isn't flaunting any lavish lifestyle. She is simply being herself...now isn't that cool.
    She doesn't need to be compared to Jackie Kennedy, she is in a class all her own. History will be in awe of her for years to come, so hate on haters.

    Why does everyone care so much about this woman's clothes? Let's go back a decade or so shall we? Remember "The Rachel"? The haircut Jennifer Aniston sported during season two of "Friends"... She said in an interview that she didn't understand the facination. She also said "how bad must my acting be that all you can focus on is my hair". So I bring that statement into this facination with Michelle Obama and her freaking clothes. What are missing while we're watching her "style". I'm personally very pleased with how Obama's done so far. Still a long way to go but I've been pleased so far. So who the hell cares what his wife wears as long as he's doing the job he promised to do?

    It's a fashion magazine, people. So let them talk fashion.

    She's a beautiful woman and an excellent role model for all of us. She has what we all want, a great husband, good kids and for a time, a fantastic job. She just got promoted. :O)

    She made enough in her prior profession to enjoy designer clothing, so most of those pieces probably aren't new. And yes, people are loosing their jobs, but not everyone was/is living paycheck to paycheck, nor are they unemployed.

    Great story. Beats the constant gloom and doom of what's going on. I have a closet full of great clothes, but no job to wear them too, but I'm inspired to look great while I'm hunting. I may buy an issue myself, my first and last time.........lol

    Helen Thomas would be appropriate. She has grace, intelligence and wit.

    Add Olympia Snowe to the list.

    And though I've never voted for her, Susan Collins has earned a place

    Oh, that's right...I forgot. Cover girls are supposed to be subservient and hot.

    Foolish of me.

    Wasn't Laura Bush in Vogue also? Where was all the hateful comments then? Oh, I forgot, we have to treat Michelle differently because she dosn't bake cookies and has dark skin pigment.

    She's no Jackie Kennedy and she never will be.
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    The First Lady is not trying to be Jackie Kennedy. And you will never be Jackie Kennedy either. But Michelle Obama is the First Lady. So who are you? Ugly Betty?
    Come take a walk down the street of any European City, you’ll see how ugly you are.
    Micelle is very realistic and understands that many things she wears just don't look good on her. She does not claim to be a fashion trend setter and the press should not try to make her one. Michelle is an average looking woman with obvious figure flaws and will do the best she can to look presentable. What more can we expect. Cut her some slack!
    She's a wonderful role model for the kids and us, too!
    Obama is lucky to have her around.
    How in the world is she stylish? She dresses like every other corporate woman in large cities in America (though most seem to understand that lime green is not a good choice usually, especially in January). She looksand dress like corporate lawyer/soccer mom, which, um, she is . . .
