WASHINGTON (CNN) – First lady Michelle Obama, who has been called a new fashion icon, will grace the cover of Vogue’s March issue.
“'I love clothes,'” she tells the magazine.
“'First and foremost, I wear what I love. That’s what women have to focus on: what makes them happy and what makes them feel comfortable and beautiful. If I can have any impact, I want women to feel good about themselves and have fun with fashion.'”
But the new first lady is also pragmatic and is willing to take some fashion criticism here and there. “'I’m not going to pretend that I don’t care about it,'” Mrs. Obama says of negative reviews of the outfit she wore in Grant Park on Election Night.
“'But I also have to be practical. In the end, someone will always not like what you wear – people just have different tastes. Some will think that sweater was horrible, [but] I was cold; I needed that sweater!'”

The first lady has developed a reputation for spotlighting the work of young, up-and-coming designers with her outfit choices. Her choice of a Jason Wu inauguration ball gown thrust the 26-year-old designer into the spotlight, designer Isabel Toledo also garnered attention because of the ensemble Michelle Obama chose to wear to her husband’s swearing-in, and J. Crew has benefited from the first lady’s affinity for the company’s clothing.

I am so proud to have Michelle Obama as out First Lady. She is brilliant, kind, hard working and has a strong sense of what is really important in life. As far as the racist comments go–those who made them should be ashamed of themselves. Truly. Speaking like that only makes you look ignorant and uneducated. As for cnn– how on earth did those comments make it past moderation?
Everything Jackie O wore seemed to impact American style ; from cropped pants to oversized sunglassses. Michelle is a beautiful canvas to dress, and she looks good in almost anything, but she is a safe dresser, I hope some of the new and upcoming designers she is working with take her look to the next level. She rocks the sheath dress, she has gorgeous arms, it would be nice to see that classic style with a more modern flair. Have that become her signature look, I believe it would then impact American women.
Michelle Obama is certainly not a fashion icon in my opinion!
I've never bought Vogue but I will for this one. She is a very classy lady that will represent the people of the United States very nicely.
Porn stars for the Senate? Why not. America's MO is leading the way. ooo..wee! Disgraceful. She looks like she graced the centerfold. Idiot !
Well I loved her white dress that she wore for the Inaugration Ball! Both she and Obama looked great. I also like what she wore during the day and the girls looked very pretty also. I think it is neat that there are 2 little girls in the White House again. And yes, they are setting a stye for other young girls across the country. The Obama Family appears to be a very loving family, I like that.
For the first time in a long time we have a President that seems to understand and know what is happening out here across America and understand how the middle class and others are fighting to make ends meet with the declining economy. I hope he never forgets what he saw and heard from the people during his campaign. Our economic future is in his hands.
Beautiful First Lady, inside and out!
Eyes of Texas, I don't know what you're talking about. I LOVE her booty!! My WHITE husband says that the most physically attractive thing about her is her curves. So much for stereotypes about beauty...
i like her tast, starting with her man, give me that man!!!! did you see how he kiss that homeless woman, humanity is him, i love obama!!
Matthew in Detroit-I have read numerous comments by you on various articles over the past few days. It is OK to express your opinion, but these opinions that you express reveal a really bitter person. I feel so sorry for you.
Obama is a poor excuse of a President. But Michelle Obama is a terrible First Lady. She has no class. She and Obama have lowered the bar.
you go girl!! don't worry about all the hateraide drinkers!!
You Go Girl! I too dress for myself. One never is able to please everybody and it is not necessary. You are lovely. You have a good heart and a smart head on your shoulders and that is all that counts. Relax and enjoy the ride. We are glad the Obamas are in the White House.
I love Michelle's clothes. How refreshing is she to have in the White House! The entire family is such a positive change for the country.
CNN, if you do not remove Renee's racist comments from your site I will not be coming here again. I'm sick of reading crap like that!!!
FOR ALL THE IDIOTS WHO ARE FINDING THINGS TO COMPLAIN ABOUT ON THIS BLOG, YOU GOT 8 YEARS TO HATE. PRESIDENT OBAMA HAS BEEN IN OFFICE FOR 3 WEEKS NOW AND PEOPLE ARE EXPECTING HIM TO CONQUER THE WORLD . GIVE THE MAN TIME. DON'T BE MAD BECAUSE YOUR HILLARY DIDN'T WIN OR THE REPUBLICANS ARE LOSERS. GO FIND SOMETHING ELSE CREATIVE TO DO WITH YOUR TIME IF ALL YOU CAN BE IS NEGATIVE.
Kay Kay, you have your continents mixed up. Cro-Magnon describe people in Europe. Come again.
Michelle is not a pretty lady. She has no good figure (too big in size) and no charming face. What do you expect from her? Let's appreciate her other side: she is smart.
Michelle Obama is a BEAUTIFUL wife, mother, daughter and sister. A highly educated Black woman with a strong sense of self. All the negativity and ignorance is coming from people who lack the same.
It is your life work that determines who you are and your contribution to this world. She is" not plastic nor man made".
I am proud to call her our "First Lady"
Oh my...you can just feel the slimy ooze of prejucice and bigotry coming off some of these posts. Get over it already! We have a lovely, intelligent, fabulous woman as first lady. What is WRONG with these people? Scary!
Awesome!!! With Nancy Reagan it was the Just say no campaign. Hillary had several causes of her own. Laura Bush put a great emphasis on education and the plight of the Burmese people. Michelle wants women to go out and play Barbie. That is such a great cause that such a visible person should take up. Vanity has been the overlooked cause and does need desperate attention in these harsh economic times. Way to go Mrs. President!!!
40 years I've been a republican but this time it was President Obama all the way. I'm disgusted with the way the republican party has detroyed the middle class for my grandchildren!!! AND I love Michelle who is soooo down to earth! She can relate to us, the working class and love to see her even in jeans!!! The women worked like I did!!!
She is also going around to all the different departments in Washington. She even visited HUD! Amazing. No other first lady did that!!
who can say michele obama doesn't dress properly? not me! everyone
has their own tastes when it comes to clothing. clothing designed is not
for everyone to feel comfortable in. when you see her publicly, she is
stylish(her style)not everyone else's. she appears to dress within a fixed
budget. she doesn't need all oleg cassini's,versace's etc. when she needs something really special, she acquires it. she doesn't have to live up to
jackie kennedy-laura bush-nancy reagan, etc. she just has to be michele
obama.
Michelle, stay humble girl. You're my she-ro! Wear what you like, it's the heart that matters.
Michelle Obama has class and will be a fine First Lady all around, because, I believe, she is genuine.
