On a trip to Ford’s Theater, site of President Lincoln’s assassination, Obama paid tribute to the 16th president’s ability to recall passages of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - It’s a word so fraught with superstition, its very mention can send grown men ducking for cover — and President Obama used it Wednesday night.

Macbeth.

On a trip to Ford’s Theater, site of President Lincoln’s assassination, Obama paid tribute to the 16th president’s ability to recall passages of Shakespeare’s Hamlet and Macbeth. And with that reference, he unwittingly ventured into what many theater hands believe to be dangerous territory: any mention of the name of the doomed Scottish king in a theater outside of a performance is considered verboten by many actors, who believe it will result in a cursed production — including a greater possibility of injury, bankruptcy, even death.

So does Obama have anything to fear from uttering the unluckiest word in what may be the unluckiest theater in American history? Theater-goers can relax: Many stage afficianados believe that the prohibition only applies to performers or theater hands, and non-actors have nothing to worry about.

But in the near future, the president might want to stick to movies. Just to be on the safe side.

Dear Eyes of Texas are Upon You ,

The ratings for FOX is high because it's the only channel that is truly biased towards Republicans. So anyone who has a bias towards republicans will watch it. Since it's the only republican news channel, all republicans go to that, whereas the other channels are sharing the rest of the viewers.

FOX is a scam. I watch Hannity, and Orielly from time to time. They lie through their teeth sometimes. They do that knowing very well or hoping, their audience is not that bright.

What do you mean he's not an actor? His whole campaign, Roman columns and all, was a big theatrical stageshow. I wonder if a big hooked cane will sweep him offstage next time he has another scripted press conference.

1. It costs money to produce a lame story like this.
2. It requires commercials to pay for lame stories.
3. It costs companies money to pay for commercials on CNN.
4. It costs consumers in added product cost for commercials.

Lame Story–>CNN–>Commercials–>Consumer.

When is Barack Obama going to meet with world leaders. These one on one town meetings he's been holding early in his presidency are way too premature. He has to be a statesman and formulate policy, not a philanthropist who helps out people individually . The woman in Florida who he hugged and said he was going to help reminded me of the old NBC show Queen for a Day where the host Jack Bailey would pick out a woman in the audience with a sob story and shower her with gifts. This is not what Pres. Obama is supposed to be doing. He is supposed to be formulating policy for the nation, not helping individuals one on one. When is he going to meet with Vladimir Putin. Gordon Brown, Sarkozy, Bibi Netanyahu or Tzipi Livni, whichever one wins the election, Angela Merkel and Premier Hu Bin Wao of China. Thus far he's acted rather naive in his first few weeks as president. He 's got to be a statesman, not a grievance counselor.

Its even more interesting that he is saying this with Lincoln and his birthday as a backdrop. Lest anyone forget...Lincoln was a REPUBLICAN, a man of his convictions who didn't concern himself with public opinion, a man who ultimately saved our country, and a man who believed that government's primary role was to protect and defend the country. I thought the forbidden words were "George Bush was a good president after all".

Perhaps Mr. Obama was demonstrating that he's not superstitious, driving the Rick Warren haters into another frenzy.

I thought I might read something soothing in CNN's ongoing "The Victim Series", depicting how another high-income person has lost their job and has to adjust to a normal life with healthy spending patterns, and now they are asking for their own personal bailout.

Gimme a break.

My father was passionate about the theatre, having been a theatre prof for almost 40 years. My mom was involved with theatre when she taught junior high and also with our community theatre. Both of my brothers and I were theatre people in high school and enjoyed it a lot.

That said......theatre people are a strange lot in a multitude of ways. Eccentricities are many and varied and weirdness is the norm. I never did much theatre after high school and my basic sanity seems intact.

I have never in my life heard of this superstition about Macbeth. Perhaps I wasn't listening, which probably ended up serving me well, but I never was fearful of anything as I walked out on the stage to do my bit, except for the occasional butterflies fluttering about in my belly.

So relax, people. Superstition has its place, but don't go nuts over it. Something wicked frequently this way comes. Get over it.

Sniffit   February 12th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

@ billy-bayou, who said "all those poor fools that blindly voted for the obama with no understand of what he is….SUFFER the consequences of your stupidity."

Thank you for so clearly illustrating the GOP's hatred for our nation when it is not under their control, and the fact that it is their core strategy for the next 4 years to cause us all to suffer horribly...both as punishment for ousting them and in an attempt to blame Obama and the Dems for it all. I'm sure you have earned your promotion from acolyte to the rank of priest in the virulent Church of Limbaugh.

Mary Lincoln “Peggy’ Beckwith (b. August 22, 1898 – July 10, 1975) was a prominent descendant of Abraham Lincoln. She was one of the last two descendants (great-grandchildren) of Abraham Lincoln with her brother, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith.[1]

"Peggy" Lincoln at age 14.Mary Beckwith, or “Peggy” as she was occasionally called, was born to Jessie Harlan Lincoln[2] and Warren Beckwith on August 22, 1898, in Mt Pleasant, Iowa. Raised in Hildene with her brother, Peggy later grew up in Washington, D.C., and was said to have become ‘a squat, fair-haired, blue-eyed, chain smoker who golfed and dabbled in oil painting and sculpture. [3] She got the nickname “Peggy” when her grandfather, Robert Todd Lincoln, described Mary Lincoln as her hair ‘flying in the sun’ when he wrote to his Aunt Emile Todd Helm and gave Mary the name. She once saw her grandfather throw some of the Lincoln Papers into a fire grate. Peggy was apparently a lesbian, she became an eccentric recluse on the family estate in Vermont.[4] She never married and died on July 10, 1975 at around 2:15 a.m. Mary Lincoln Beckwith died at Rutland Hospital in Rutland, Vermont. She requested when she died that her ashes be spread over her estate, this request was granted and there was no funeral or memorial service held. At her death, her brother, Robert Todd Lincoln Beckwith, became the last living Lincoln descendant

JW Booth   February 12th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I just hope he doesn't try too hard to emulate Lincoln.

Grant   February 12th, 2009 1:11 pm ET

To Wally,

Actually, you are not quite correct. Lincoln was extremely anti-slavery. He could not fathom how one man could "own" another. Where you are correct is that he did not want the Civil War to be about slavery, but about preserving the Union. One of the major motivations for the Emancipation Proclamation was to keep Europe – specifically England, who had recently outlawed slavery – out of the war.

Larry   February 12th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

I consider myself a reasonably intelligent, well-read person. I was involved in high school theatre, and volunteer at a local theatre. I've never heard of this superstition.

And I bet that President Obama and his speech writers never had either. Like voodoo, where the cursed person has to believe in the curse for it to be effective, I doubt there will be any long-term impact.

it has seemed to me from the beginning of Obama's campaign, the public and the media continue to foreshadow a possible assassination or death of the president. it's just weird, like we are being prepped for the inevitable. i hope that's not the case; but bush, clinton, bush sr, did not receive the same treatment. i suppose all of the lincoln and kennedy parallels, along with him being the first non-pure white President can give way to that kind of mindset. i just hope that does not lead to some kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.

I've been a professional playwright since 1987. Having heard that uttering the "M" word in the theatre meant bad luck had be cowed when I was younger and inexperienced. Every time I enter a theatre whether to see a play or rehearse one, I whisper the "M" word. One time I yelled "MACBETH!" at the top of my lungs...the play was a flop. Hmmmm....

OMG!! How scary is that!!

When I was 16, I worked as an apprentice in a "star system" summer playhouse. "Bye Bye Birdie" was the show of the week. Carleton Carpenter was the star.

Just before curtain up one afternoon, I suddenly realized I'd quoted the 3 witches speech at the beginning of "Macbeth". I didn't know how to counteract it. I was ushering that week.

At one point in the overture, the curtain is supposed to rise. Instead – the curtain jerked and did not rise. Suddenly there was a crash, a scream, and the actor playing Kim's father came rushing out to the lobby yelling for a doctor.

The brand new (200 lbs. per inch) rope that supported the pipe that held the kleig (stage) lights broke and the pipe and lights came crashing down ON TOP OF MR CARPENTER – pinning him down on the stage!!! I became one hysterically crying 16 year old.

Fortunately, Mr Carpenter was not badly hurt and was able to continue. But to this day, I blame myself for what happened.

The curse of "Macbeth" is real – I have no doubts about that!!

BK   February 12th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

I can't believe CNN is reporting on dark age superstition.

Evan   February 12th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Hey, guys, it is HUGE news when someone as important as a president utters the word "Macbeth" in a theater. There are some things in our culture that make us stand up and take notice. This is one of them. In simpler terms, it's a huge no-no.

I mean, you don't tug on Superman's cape, you don't spit into the wind, you don't pull the mask off the ole' Lone Ranger - well, you get the idea.

Joe The Plumber   February 12th, 2009 12:58 pm ET

Tony from North Port FL   February 12th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

This article was soooo stupid! What a waste of time and effort. With all that's going on in the world, to think someone took the time out to research this and then write about it indicates may be it's time for the writer to consider a career change.

arithmetic is liberal   February 12th, 2009 12:54 pm ET

Stage aficionados only believe that it's a curse if said by a stage hand or actor? Ha! Hardly! I live in Hollywood, married to a professional actor, actors are most of my friends. So I can say this with absolute certainty:

I have never seen a SERIOUS actor invoke the Macbeth curse in any kind of seriousness. The only actors I've seen do this are the kids right outta high school who got taught this by whatever batty drama teacher they had. And they usually have a stupid ritual to "lift the curse" like turning counter clockwise in a circle three times while stomping your foot or some crap.

It rankles me just as much as the relevance of this Ticker article. Because when it comes down to it, the whole Macbeth thing is just another way for shallow actors with nothing to say to get some attention for their phony outrage at someone saying Macbeth in a theatre.

Joe   February 12th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

You know, I've read a lot of dumb articles masquerading as journalism on this site, but this one takes the cake. This article even makes Naverette look intelligent.

Time to start getting my news from a reputable source. Bye!

Gary   February 12th, 2009 12:53 pm ET

CNN apparently doesn't want to cover the pork in the stimulus and how we will saddle our children with extraordinary debt because we mistakenly believe it will get us out of a recession 4 months early...This story is a waste of your news talent. I'm beginning to feel like CNN is working for Obama and Pelosi.

Jeremiah Frost   February 12th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

"But in the near future, the president might want to stick to movies. Just to be on the safe side."

Very interesting story actually. Hah.

Ken in Dallas   February 12th, 2009 12:52 pm ET

Guuz, you guys are mostly a bunch of illiterates. The theatre superstition about the "M" word is much more serious than mere profanity, and it's been around longer than the US. It is Lincoln's birthday, after all, and I'd bet most of you didn't even know Lincoln liked Shakespeare.

Wake up and get some culture. You guys are why the rest of the world thinks all Americans are boorish buffoons.

Wally   February 12th, 2009 12:51 pm ET

Maybe it has already been said, but as great of a president as Abraham Lincoln was, he was not anti-slavery. He was just trying to preserve the Union. I'm a big fan of Lincoln, but I don't worship him in the same way I don't worship Obama. People become romanticized over the years.

Darlis   February 12th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Just when you thought it couldn't be more ridiculous... you proved me wrong CNN... As one writer said, with the Republicans and unamerican Rush Limbaugh praying for President Obama (Yes, get over it, he IS the President) to fail.. that is his primary fear.. We should be thankful every day that our President's claim to qualification is not that he can see Russan from his yard... that's where we COULD BE!

Mike Braswell   February 12th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Wow, maybe Mr. Obama ought to tell the Republicans (all 40) of the in the Senate that they are the minority and quit listening to Rush pill poping Limbaugh lets get some things done in the country for a change and quit using fear of the last president be as straight foward as the president is. He has made some mistakes but he is a quick learner and he is doing ok.

Alex   February 12th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

CNN, I think you've lost a reader here. How can anybody take you seriously when you're printing this garbage and dolling it up with a captivating headline? If I wanted to read this trash I would pick up US Weekly. Unbelievable.

Bill   February 12th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

From the title of the article my guess was that he had said the "N" word or "F" word.

There is some validity to the superstition though as there have been quite a few bad incidents throughout history regarding productions of Macbeth. Simon is right though. It doesn't apply to Obama, only those actually working on a production of it.

You don't need the minority to agree with you. Just ask Obama, he was crystal clear on the topic.

Of course, if you fail without their support, it's all on you.

Cute headline but where is the story? I was afraid he had said "Mission Accomplished" on the economy or some other non-sense. Would have been dab for Reagan or Fred Tompsn or teh Governator. But Obabma is a community organizer, He is used to people down on their luck (and its not from MacBeth)Can't resist the temptation to sate that we were so un-lucky as a nation during the Bush years.

lightheaded22   February 12th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

Shy is it that you can say tnything and every word that President Obama utters is translated in to something he did not say. If he felt like referencing Macbeth in his comments, he should have been able to do so without your silly column.

TJ, TACOMA   February 12th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

Superstition is a bit like religion. If people are silly enough to beleive in fictional characters such as "Santa Claus" and "God", why wouldn't they believe that this guy is doomed for saying the word "Macbeth". I gotta agree with Ok, CNN, this is far from newsworthy. And if something does happen to our beloved Barack Hussein, all these wack jobs will surely blame it on this stupid reference.

A great leader's desciple and follower, Obama pays glowing tribute to the Legend that united the country and by this, he fondly hopes to emulate Abe's example. President Obama can relax. The "prohibition" on actually saying "Macbeth", when referring to Shakespeare's play, applies only to actors and those professionally engaged on producing it on stage, who always refer to it as "The Scottish play". It doesn't apply to academics teaching it either, since there is no such oeuvre in the canon of Shakepeare's dramatic works as The Scottish Play.

Oh, you never say the word "Macbeth" in a theater.

The only way to reverse the bad luck that doing this will bring is to exit the theater, spin around three times saying a profanity and then ask permission to return inside.

Now, for all the naysayers out there - superstition is a source of amusement for a lot of us. Let us have our fun when someone does something that is considered superstitious.

The forbidden word in this article is not Macbeth, but intelligence. CNN's stupidity is astounding. It's like they're taking us back to an age of superstition, magical thinking, and plain old ignorance. Even tongue in cheek this would be un-newsworthy.

Uh, no, actually he's probably now the most well known man on earth, but who knows who any of the Republicans are right now who are opposing this bill? Who knows any of the Democrats accused of inflating the stimulus? Unless you're a news junkie, not really.
No, its the strangers in Washington who need to be exposed, who are out of touch with average Americans. Obama is the guy to do it. He's got to wrangle in the house Dems and keep the bipartisan pressure on the Repubs. He's done a good job so far. If I were Ed, I'd be screaming at the Repubs who are scared of being cast in the extremist shock jock rhetoric as socialist, being cowed by narrow ideologues in the party when they really do believe in some gov't intervention. The Repubs are in danger of becoming an extremist minority party.
And finally, Ed, for god sakes, everyone knows we're borrowing money from China, and have been for awhile before this happened. Obama doesn't need to say the obvious. No, all Ed's got is a subtle "sow the tiniest seeds of doubt" argument regarding Obama because he's got nothing for his side of the aisle.

jaye   February 12th, 2009 12:20 pm ET

All you have to do is read the message boards online and you'll find thousands of "threats" against our new President.
The naysayers, mainly republicans, have run our country into the ground over the past 8 years, and I wonder what President Lincoln would have to say about what happened to his party.
Not only is our country suffering at the hands of the republicans, but it seems (according to the message boards) that they're on a quest to destroy our new president any way possible.
This is a shameful time for our country – and I blame the republicans.

How about this for thought:

"Many stage afficianados believe that the prohibition only applies to performers or theater hands"

Aren't all politicians considered actors/performers? Because much of what comes out of a politicians mouth is simply non-fictional (or storytelling if you will). Some great examples of this are "read my lips – no new taxes"

or

"President-elect Barack Obama vowed Tuesday to bar lawmakers' pet projects from his massive economic stimulus plan and to bring unprecedented accountability to federal spending."

Looks like we've had some great actors in office, always convincing in what they say. In the end it is usually empty lies...

Geoff   February 12th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Oh for the love of Pete. Could CNN please stick to actual news in these incredibly difficult times? This story is beyond frivolous, and in the end you undermine it's entire existence by pointing out (quite rightly) that "Macbeth" (there, I said it) is only verboten among folks in the world of theater. High school and college students discussing the play don't worry about referring to it by name and neither would Obama. He's worried about the largest financial catastrophe since the Depression, as should you be. Get your act together and quit wasting everyone's time with non-stories like this and the one about a Palin-Ayers talk show. You're sounding more and more like a local TV news station.

Simon   February 12th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

President Obama can relax. The "prohibition" on actually saying "Macbeth", when referring to Shakespeare's play, applies only to actors and those professionally engaged on producing it on stage, who always refer to it as "The Scottish play". It doesn't apply to academics teaching it either, since there is no such oeuvre in the canon of Shakepeare's dramatic works as The Scottish Play.

Virginia   February 12th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Superstition is just that superstition. There are all kinds of things people do to ward off bad things happening to them because they believe things will get them if they do not do certain things or do certain things and as you live in different parts of the country more can be added.
When we have things happen to us that if fate or circumstances of genes not superstition.

Extra points will be awarded to someone using race, Rush, and right-wing, and Palin in the same sentence.

He can say whatever he wants. Defying the status quo and breaking down inhibitory walls is the cornerstone of Obama's presidency. Paying tribute to a great REPUBLICAN President is perhaps the smartest political move yet. All G.O.P. that lambast this as showboating stand to look like who they really are: fascists pagan idolators that could care less about America or the Republican party. All they want is a white world where they can be unapologetically ignorant and take whatever they want.

I've been watching Soledad's interviews & so on, she's doing a good Job.....But, I would like to comment regarding Lincoln. The people she has interviewed, one has said Lincoln didn't Look Back, where he was raised, and went ON in Life, and becoming a Politician, Lawyer,
and finally, went on to the White House.....Here's a question for you, CNN, Did You know that when you compare a Penny / a Nickel / a Quarter / a 50 cent Piece / did you know that all the Presidents HEADS are looking ONE WAY, except for Lincoln's ??

Could you find out the real reason why ?

I've heard, the reason was : When he "freed the slaves" a lot of the american people & people in congress & etc. were so ticked off at his idea, and when he actually did that, he didn't "Look Back" and that's how and why they put his head "looking the other way" when they made the "penny".....

Would like to know if this is true ?

I worked at Ford's Theater as an usher when I was in high school. We were always leery going downstairs between shows. This is where they had the Lincoln exhibit. I hated to go pass his top hat and coat in the dark. The only thing that was lit was the case that had his clothes. They also had the door that Booth entered before he shot him. It was scary.
