Blago's brother solicited funds, Burris says

Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, says in an affidavit that he refused to contribute money to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, says in an affidavit that he refused to contribute money to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - The brother of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich solicited Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, for up to $10,000 in campaign cash before Burris was named to his Senate seat, according to Burris staffers and an affidavit obtained Saturday by CNN.

However, in the affidavit, Burris said he refused to contribute to Blagojevich or to assist in fundraising for him.

Burris' appointment by Blagojevich was hotly disputed, as Blagojevich is facing corruption charges. Prosecutors' allegations against him include that he attempted to sell the Senate seat, vacated by President Barack Obama upon his election, to the highest bidder. He was ousted from office last month by Illinois lawmakers.

In his January 8 testimony before an Illinois House impeachment panel, Burris, the former Illinois attorney general, said he had no conversations with Blagojevich about his desire to be appointed to the seat prior to Blagojevich's December 9 arrest. Burris also said that he was not aware of any "quid pro quo"
with the former governor.

"I can for this committee state that there was no legal, personal or political exchange for my seat," Burris said.

    Simon,

If people hate liberals, they sure had a strange way of showing it in the last election. Perhaps most Republicans left the country rather than facing the humiliation of losing to someone who had almost no experience? Couldn't the Republicans stand up and fight?

This guy has just got up.. He was quiet until he got the senate seat. All these democrats are corrupt and greedy. They will do anything to come to Power. Barack has done the same thing. They are all rogues. You cannot trust them and they are dishonest.

Ken> Please explain to us all how BHO "bought" his election. We'd really like to know. Also, pet mouse project? You do realize that the mice are for cancer research, right? Maybe you should look into things more before spouting off and making a fool out of yourself. Just a thought.

What is the problem? Obama begged for money non-stop during his campaign, and nobody who gave (or not) money was blamed. Blagojevich's brother asked for support, Burris refused to support him, but still Blagojevich named him for the Senate seat. Since when asking to contribute with money is a sign of corruption?

I am not surprised at this revelation at all. I never trusted Burris or Blagojevich. Burris just wanted to be called senator Burris at all cost, so he can add it to his cementary monument in Chicago. The saddest thing here is that Burris has no shame and dared to accept this seat at all. What a lesson for your kids and grand kids, old man!

The AP report on this says the Illinois House impeachment specifically asked Burris if he had been contacted by the Governor's brother, and Burris said no. I presume this was testimony under oath. Is this not a criminal offense?

    Simon –

Republicans USED to fight. Then it became the party of Dick Cheney, Newt Gingrich, Michael Steele, Dennis Hastert and the rest of the Chickenhawks.

Why would I trust people who refused to fight Comunism or thrash like Noriega to defend me against Al Qaeda? Remember that thousands more Americans wer killed by foreign terrorists under George Bush than under all prior US history together.

Wow Ken, I'm sure your wife and children hate you and I can see why. Your a complete Moron.

Just when I thought nothing could surprise me anymore from the hateful partisan posts here, I read Proud American's personal attack on Ken. Democrats and Republicans are not Americans in my book. You both put party above the country. I bet you partisans would like to kill the members of the other party. Brother against brother. Disgusting. You people are the enemy within of the American people.

    S. Callahan, what does Jesus have to do with it? And wouldn't his return mean the end times? Maybe we should just follow his example.

I don't exactly see where Burris should be under scrutiny here. He didn't pay for the seat, he said he didn't have any money. He didn't talk to the governor, he talked to his brother. I guess there are missing pieces we should probably find out before judging. Jesus would certainly agree with that.
