Blago's brother solicited funds, Burris says

Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, says in an affidavit that he refused to contribute money to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.
Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, says in an affidavit that he refused to contribute money to former Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

CHICAGO, Illinois (CNN) - The brother of former Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich solicited Sen. Roland Burris, D-Illinois, for up to $10,000 in campaign cash before Burris was named to his Senate seat, according to Burris staffers and an affidavit obtained Saturday by CNN.

However, in the affidavit, Burris said he refused to contribute to Blagojevich or to assist in fundraising for him.

Burris' appointment by Blagojevich was hotly disputed, as Blagojevich is facing corruption charges. Prosecutors' allegations against him include that he attempted to sell the Senate seat, vacated by President Barack Obama upon his election, to the highest bidder. He was ousted from office last month by Illinois lawmakers.

In his January 8 testimony before an Illinois House impeachment panel, Burris, the former Illinois attorney general, said he had no conversations with Blagojevich about his desire to be appointed to the seat prior to Blagojevich's December 9 arrest. Burris also said that he was not aware of any "quid pro quo"
with the former governor.

"I can for this committee state that there was no legal, personal or political exchange for my seat," Burris said.

There isn't one politician that doesn't have a skeleton or two to hide. It's a shame that withholding the truth gets you into some of the highest profile jobs in the nation. These people have allowed money we don't have(the nation had to borrow) to be put into the hands of people who put our economy into this mess in the first place.

    Take the blinders off!

Burris will never be anything but an ethical problem for the democrats. He's an ambitious, lying politician in the mold of Illinois/Chicago politics. He stinks, he's unqualified for any office and he should be bounced from the Senate.

Roland Burris was given every opportunity to come clean about any improprieties surrounding his Senate appointment and chose to deny any "awarreness" of the fact in a deliberate attempt to mislead the Illinois House impeachment panel. His appointment should be rescinded so that the selection process can be restored and proceed in an untainted and respectable fashion.

I find it asinine that one would think simply because you are a member of the Republican party that would make you instantaneously "smarter" than one of the Democratic party.
Do you know exactly who your party tends to play to? Those who are less informed than most and have pre-historic views on how this country should be won.
Oh...and by the way...the Head of this Great Nation in which we live received an IVY LEAGUE education...and is a Democrat (and so is his wife).

  9. Suzie McKay - Now a Democrat - and proud to be!

So Simon – "Republicans are more sturdy and intelligent. They don't run away from from problems. They stand up and fight."

    Really?

I was a registered Republican and fairly active for the last 35 years. After the last Republican administration, I realized the only sturdy and intelligent choice was Barack Obama. I didn't run away from our country's problems. I stood up and fought for him and for all the people of this country

    Even you.

Think maybe we should audit all Senators and maybe even lie detectors? I have never seen anything like this entire bunch of criminals. Starting with nancy pelosi who apparently we needed to buy a long range jet for with our tax money, guess the airports are too dangerous for her but not for my kids.

People speak out of both sides of their mouth and none know what
they are saying, never heard such rambling from the people on this comment. No one bothers to check out info before they speak, like the pet mouse project, no such thing.
Who did Obama buy the White House from, such an interesting statement.

Buy the white house, is that like when you get your high powered lawyers to file lawsuits on every issue until the other side gives up because they put country first. Then you lie to the american public and start a war so you can control the oil in that country.

Hey Simon. You claim that people hate libs. No, Republicans hate libs.
You chide Marcia, and tell her to look at her email and compare it with
other "articulated" ones. You mean like yours? "from from". Now that's
articulation. You say Republicans are intelligent, sturdy and stand up and fight. If it were not for Rush Limbaugh( the pinnacle of intellect)
pulling the Republican pol's chains, and telling them what to do, they
just might do something "intelligent" for a change. They sure haven't
done so in the last eight years.

    February 14, 2009 03:50 pm at 3:50 pm |
  20. well there it is

John, give Marcia a break. She can spell, she just lacks the capacity to use the correct homonym. Then again, well over half of the posts on the tickers contain serious spelling and grammatical errors. This points to the unfortunate state of affairs in the U.S. education system. No wonder we as a nation elect morons time and again. As others on the board might say: "Weer two stoopid too elekt qwalifyed ofishals".

Man, I swear...Mr. Burris is slow, why didn't he just turn this in sooner rather than later? At first, he didn't even say nothing BUT now, he wants "transparency?" Man, he should have just turned it sooner, for crying out loud, we were the laughing stock until things started getting slow but now, he comes up with this crap? What an idiot, don't get me wrong, I appreciate his honesty, well at least some part but he should know better. I agree with Dems that he should have turned it sooner, but I definitely agree with the GOP that he doesn't deserve it. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure he's a good citizen and takes his work seriously BUT come on, don't be slow. Plus, this just proves my point that Burris, is not gonna anywhere, remember what I said about him and his seat for re-election here at CNN a while back...

He's just lucky we're having fun over here, enjoying a good time and the ladies ain't around. But shhhhhh, don't tell them we can get in trouble, LOL! But if we get caught, then we'll get in trouble, LOL!! Not me, been doing this for like 3 years or so now, Valentines Day is special to me, LOL!!

Come on Mr. Burris, think sir, think...

You idiot partisans won't do a thing. You will just do as your party tells you to and shut up.

Republicans and Democrats are all a bunch of idiots. What's the matter? Are you to stupid to actually vote for the individual? No, you just vote the way your party tells you to.

You've labeled yourself a Democrat Bud. Burris is all yours.
