The White House released an excerpt from President Obama's message on community service, which will air during the NBA All-Stars game Sunday.

WASHINGTON (CNN) - President Obama - fresh off a political win in Washington after Congress passed his economic stimulus bill - will take his game to another set of constituents: basketball fans.

On Sunday, a pre-taped message from the president in which he promotes community service will air during the NBA All-Stars game in Phoenix, Arizona. Tipoff is at 8 p.m. EST and will air on TNT.

TNT is owned by CNN's parent company Turner Broadcasting System.

Watch an excerpt of Obama's message

"In this time of so much need in our communities and across our country, we are blessed with endless ways to restore hope and opportunity in places that yearn for both," Obama will say according to excerpts released by the White House Saturday.

Obama's plea: "Prepare a care package for a soldier. Read to a child. Or fix up a local basketball court so the next generation can play and grow. ... Log on to USAService.org to find or create a project near you, then gather some friends and lace 'em up."

The Last Patriot: Ask not what your county can do for you but what you can do for your country....you should read "Yes We Can"'s comments or probably you will just stay bitter and hammer out negative comments on blogs all day.

Working for free? Hardly. Volunteering has so many benefits to both parties involved. Try it sometime and see. I have learned amazing things while serving and visiting with homeless individuals at our local soup shop. I'm sure their belly filled with a warm bowl of soup wouldn't think that someone working for "free" is crazy.

Wingnuts and Freeptards will do nothing for the next four years but pee, moan, whine and talk trash about Barack, so just ignore these proudly ignorant hillbillies and dipsticks. The NATION is behind Obama, and Obama WILL succeed. Wingnuts are all about fear, jealousy, whining and loathing. They are professional "victims" and obsolete dinosaurs, hellbent toward extinction. Good riddance to them. In the meantime, tune these sad chumps out.

    Dear "LAST PATRIOT"

God knows I really really hope you are the LAST. The country has enough idiots like you. Does being the LAST mean we will not have to read any more of your stupid blogs?

Hey Last Patriot, I think you are confusing President Obama with Bush. He's the one who bankrupted us and took away our civil liberties.

Right on Last Patriot, I am with you 100%. You failed to also mention that he will be taking away our conservative vote by manipulating the Census, so that even if we wanted to vote these clowns out, we won't be able to, ala, California, Michigan and New Jersey.

Just as most of the citizens of these three states if they like their government and the way they govern them and the answer is a resounding No we don't, but can do little to vote them out, due to sweet deals arranged by these democrats with unions, etc...

Do you think it is coincidental that the Dept of Education will be doubling in size soon? We will be forced to pay huge increases in taxes so that the teacher unions get sweetheart deals with great pensions, and Barack gets his base expanded.

The next election is critical for the Republicans to get back power, or this country will be like Michigan in 6 to 8 years.

This is what America is all about.
It's time to roll up your sleeves and get busy America - enough of the Bush-era "greedy" politics - get all I can get for myself and forget about everyone else. Americans are resourceful, brave, intelligent and above-up, we will show the world what America can do under the Obama Administration.
God Bless You and Your Family

Sorry Mister President. After the tax hikes and having my work hours and pay cut because of the stimulus package, I can't afford any good gear for the game. Heck, Don't know if I'll have all the mortgage next month. Maybe I could move in with Henrietta Hughs for awhile?

    United Socialist States of America.

I just wish Barack would have ran in Russia, he is far better suited to govern there than he is here.

He is dishonest, and moron when it comes to the economy and wants to silence any opposition. Sounds like the way they do business in Moscow to me.

I almost feel bad even acknowledging the comment by The Last Patriot, but...

If you think that doing something like preparing a care package for a soldier or reading to a child is "working for free," then you are missing the point. The President is asking us to be aware of our communities and be responsible citizens, which is in stark contrast to what our last president told us, which was to just go out and "buy things." I'm trying to remember when it was that being a caring member of your community suddenly became "socialist" or "unpatriotic."

And what will bankrupt this country is the continuation of the blatant disregard for basic economics that the last president of this country had. History provides countless examples of the fact that complete deregulation of our economy with no government intervention is what destroys us. Government's job is to be the force that corrects the "invisible hand" when it goes awry – that is, step in and fix the mess when the free market fails. And that's exactly what the stimulus bill is supposed to be. Does anyone remember FDR's New Deal? The thing that helped pull our country out of the great depression? The thing that made it illegal for banks to just steal people's money and go out of business? The thing that made it so that average Americans could lead a life with a reasonable standard of living instead of living in Hoover towns? Well, that wasn't free, and this isn't going to be either. Running a government costs money, and money doesn't just grow on trees. Besides, we're not talking about jacking up taxes for average Americans, we're talking about closing tax loop holes for corporations. If our business tax rate really was one of the highest in the world, do you think we would have the largest economy in the world? The truth of the matter is that businesses in this country pay an effective tax rates in many cases that is almost zero.

Alright that's all fine and dandy...but a dream. Don't defend Obama and make claims that this "speech" has the answers to our problems. Become familiar with where the money from this economic bill is going to before having the opinion that we are in the right direction to "perfecting the UNION just as President Lincoln did." Come on man...really? Anyone...just tell me what they have in common besides charisma and oratory skills...anyone?

I like this attitude! I am doing more than I ever have before for people who are in wose shape than I am (and I'm in pretty bad shape). But helping at the local animal shelter or cleaning up a park doesn't cost me anything but my time. I feel good about what I'm doing and really appreciate the President asking this of all citizens. Great message!

Here is a down to earch president who is in touch with people and uses his popularity to motivate people to help themselves
What a difference with arrogant Bush who followed his feelings and did whatever he felt was the right thing to do in the morning and when things did not go the way he "felt" they should, he claimed he was following what god himself told him to do!!? If you do not recall, let me remind you of one specific example: god himself told Bush to attack Iraq!! I am wondering if in Bush's mind: God = Chaney.

    Directed at "The Last Patriot"
So you'd rather there is no regulation, you don't want to pay taxes and you will never work with and for your community without payment? I can see the patriotism clearly, if by some weird coincidence patriotism now equals greed and selfinterest.
Get a grip, you can't expect things to work themselves out without a little help, and if you won't allow the government to act and you won't act then who's left?
The problem today is that we can't just expect others to do everything. When President Obama on one hand works through Congress and legislation, and on the other hand tries to engage the people he is doing precisely what he is meant to be doing as President, and as a leader. If you don't want to volunteer at least your tax-dollars might go to someone, who needs help and in turn will help others.
It's as basic as a sense of community really, if we all only care about ourselves and our family, how will we ever progress?

I can see that many dems that support Obama will give help to making our country strong again, but you think the other side will help? I think not. They will just continue to blog their RIDICULOUS points of view of how great the GOP is. SO SAD!!!

Here's an easy idea for service - take an empty trash bag when you go for a walk, wear gloves, and pick up bits of litter or debris in your community. You don't have to go overboard, but even picking up a few pieces blowing around can do wonders for your environment AND your waistline!

Here's another for those of you (like me) who are involved with youth groups and community sports - inform everyone to gather at somewhere convenient and give them maps of the area to fan out. They can do the litter pick up, or if you live in a snowy place, get them to bring shovels and clear sidewalks.

Easy things like these ideas will go a long way to building community spirit!

I have my own worries to deal with. Wonderful for those who have the money and time to be able to do community service, but not everyone has that luxury. As long as it doesn't become mandatory, I'm not going to cry foul.

I think he should protect the American worker the democrats strip the bill of American worker protection for those who receive money from the stimulus bill. In other words they can give the job that your tax money has paid to create to a illegal immigrant

There you have it. A stimulus package for one and death warrant for the other. We are in for the big haul. It was the only way to get it out him. Alexandera Pelosi maybe should do a documentary of her mother handing over the American's valentine gift to his 'Airness' .

    Happy Valentine brownie.
