CNN Radio Political Notebook: The stimulus and Obama

The president's legacy may be defined by the success of the stimulus bill.
The president's legacy may be defined by the success of the stimulus bill.

A development just a third of the way through President Obama’s First Hundred Days may come to define his presidency.

In today’s CNN Radio Political Notebook, CNN's Bob Costantini talks with Professor Julian Zelizer of Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School, who lays out the stakes Obama faces following the passage of the stimulus plan.

In his commentary for CNN.com, Professor Zelizer wrote, “The huge size of this legislation raises the stakes beyond what many presidents confronted in their Hundred Days.”

Hey Republicans! SHUT THE HELL UP. You're not in power anymore – in fact, you're not even CLOSE to being in power anymore – get over it.

You can't even window shop right now, ok? Go away and figure out who the hell you are and WHY you screwed up so badly.

You're only able to say how you feel because the democrats are letting you.....get it?

    WE DON'T NEED YOU!

Hey just wait this was only bailout II, bailout III will make this look like chump change. And if that one doesn't work we will have bailout IV,V,VI,VII, after all it takes 6.2 Giga watts to make the flux capacitor to work.

It is unbelievable to me how many of you people worship OBAMA. You act like he walks on water and once rose from the dead. Don't you people recognize baloney when you see or hear it? And I'm not talking about a sandwich ingredient.

TO GOP: LOVE YOUR COMMENT, AND LET'S NOT FORGET "VICTORY" BANNER WITH REGARDS TO THE WAR IN IRAQ. I HAD THE PRIVLEDGE TO SPEND TIME WITH A FEW SOLDIERS, LET ME SAY THEY ARE LOYAL TO THEIR COUNTRY AND WILL DO THEIR JOB @110% BUT THEIR OPINION AS TO THE WAR IN IRAQ, WELL LET'S JUST SAY THEY ARE NOT HAPPY. IF ANY OF YOU KNOW OR HAVE SOMEONE SERVING IN ARMED FORCES ASK THEM ABOUT THE MILITARY SUPPLIED PROTECTIVE GEAR, ONCE AGAIN SAD. TO KNOW THAT AFTER PUTTING YOUR LIFE ON THE LINE FOR A CAUSE WHERE THE NATURE OF THE PEOPLE IS NOT THE WAYS OF THE WEST AND YOU ARE LOOKED AT AS AN "OCCUPYER" NOT SOME WHO IS THERE TO HELP HAS TO BE JUST HEARTBREAKING AND TO KNOW WHEN YOU GET HOME YOUR FAMILY MAY NOT BE THERE (WIFE/SPOUSE). YOUR WHOLE MIND SET IS SO DIFFERENT AND IT IS SO HARD TO FUNCTION IN TODAY'S SOCIETY FOR A LOT OF THESE MEN/WOMEN.

Oh wahh. For some reason the Republicans just continue to promote hatred, and divisiveness when thats the last thing the country needs. The President has been in power for just over three weeks. Only a fool claims to know anything after only three weeks. You lost, get over it. We don't want you Republicans in power anymore. Deal with it.

I love it! Blaming Obama already for the economy? He hasn't been in office for a month and already the economy is his fault...in fact he is making it worse. GOP wake up! Why do you guys want to keep trucking down the same road that we trucked down the last 8 years? It makes no sense! So if I am running a business (I know America isn't a business) and my business is faily do I A) keep going like nothing is wrong, or do I B) change direction? If you answered B you are correct, if you answered A you are bankrupt!

I find if funny that the same people that say it is too early to judge GW on his legacy, seem to think we have seen enough of Obama to give a failing grade to his presidency. All the conservative postings above this one talk about how bad the stimulis is (who knows, right?), but don't post one idea of a better route to take. All they know is they don't like this idea, but don't bring anything to the table. SAD!

I certainly wouldn't want to be the one walking in President Obama's shoes...he has the burden of this nation's survival on him right now.

I agree with Paul Begala...for all of the Republicans who voted against the stimulas plan and think there is too much spending, then none of the funds should be spent for their states. This will most certainly reduce the price tag of the plan. It is unbelieveable how they voted against the plan, are bad-mouthing President Obama, but are willing to take the money...how under-handed and devious they are! The next time this bunch of hypocrites on are TV, they only thing they should be saying is thank you for the money being spent in their home states as part of the stimulas plan. Otherwise, they need to sit down and shut up!

No one has yet explained why doctors need to be fined or jailed for failure to hand over and citizens health records as part of the "stimulus" package. Did nobody read this piece of trash? Did they just blindly trust a Chicago politician? I am called a racist, mysoginist, obstructionist and hate monger for asking these questions.

If the GOP is united in its opposition to the stimulus bill then the twelve (12) states represented by these GOP senators should NOT receive any funds from the stimulus bill. The funds should be re-apportioned to the 38 states that realize that something has to be done.

The states are; Alabama, Arizona, South Carolina, Mississippi, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, Tennessee, Georgia, Kentucky, Utah and Wyoming.

I can just imagine how their constituents will react when NOTHING is coming from Washington!

This stimulus package will burden our children, grandchildren, and their grandchildren. In my blog, blog.conservativerep.com, I document some of the the pork barrel project in this bill that are an utter waste of money. Hopefully this bill will not have the same effects as our government's intervention during the the great depression. Our intervention prolonged and worsened the great depression. And, for the record, I did stand against the previous administrations bailout plans as well.

It's time to tax the people that have taken from this economy since Ronald Reagan. President Teddy Roosevelt (A republican) was right, we need a progressive income tax.

The republican abuses from Bernard Madoff to Kenny Boy Lay are where you should be looking if you were trying to be honest in even the slightest way. But then you rightwingnuts will continue to listen to "Old Druggie Rush" and ditto your way to the poor house.

We have two presidents that took us through the TOUGHEST of times: Lincoln (held on to all these schizophreniac states) and Roosevelt (Depression and WWII). W, on the other hand, created his own hell for us.

  22. CHANGE we need

Since everything can be fixed with 'rush job politics and Executive Orders, here is the road we are going down for the next no read signing by House/Senate or by executive order...

1st...Freedom of speech...gone with the fairness doctrine

2nd...right to bear arms...gone when the focus of the economy is done. The Brady bunch will be hounding every Dem to do it again.

3rd...no quartering soldiers in private houses...gone, will be seen as DOD cost savings in the 'stimulus'

    4th...unreasonable search/seizure...gone under socialism

5th...self-incrimination...only valid to the elite few under the administration. For them, it is an oversight or 'mistake'. All others, we are out of luck.

6th...right to fair/speedy trial...only good when Dems want to push through Repub convictions or at Gitmo

7th...right to trial by jury...gone, unless you are housed in Gitmo.

8th...no excessive bail/fines...only valid for execs and 'cronies', they get a smack on the wrist or no punishment. All others, be ready to pay.

9th...unenumerated rights...WAAAY gone. Your rights will be determined by the party that 'won the election'.

10th..limits power in Fed Gov...gone effective 20 Jan 2009, proven upon signing this "Stimulus".

When you want change, be careful what you ask for!! Change may take away THESE top 10.

Still waiting for some ideas GOP! Help us get the economy on the right track. The only rule is you can't say TAX CUTS! That one has been used. Other than that you are welcome to throw out any idea that will possibly stimulate the economy. Anybody, anybody? Ok, until you come with a BETTER idea you need to not come to the table. Dems and the country are all ears!

    @ Anonymous

Do you really think that the mess of the past 8 years of spending like it is Christmas season and all the spending directed at the wealthy, do you really think that all of that mess will be cleaned up in 4 weeks? If you do then you are just as smart as W is and as witty as Cheney.
it took 8 years of neglect of the working folks who should have gotten better wages, health care for their children and a government that works for them, 8 years of Bush and Cheney borrowing from the Chinese to give tax cuts to the wealthy and the same republicans, oh no wait the “fiscally conservative” republicans who voted for those tax cuts and allowed for Bush to bankrupt the country. 8 years of waging a war that was not necessary and definitely not cheap, not only economically but the price of human life that has been paid with almost 200 thousand Iraqis dead.

So Anonymous, this bill is necessary to get the economy moving again, like it or not, debt for your children and grandchildren or not, this is what it will take to at least have a shot at turning things around.
