The Romneys are selling their ski retreat in Utah, as well as their home in Belmont, Massachusetts.

(CNN) - He has been estimated to be worth in excess of $250 million, but former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney may just be belt-tightening along with the majority of Americans.

Romney, the former business whiz and governor of Massachusetts, is looking to unload two of his four mansions, collectively valued in the currently-sour real estate market at close to $10 million.

The more expensive of the two homes is a 9,500 square foot cabin on 11 acres in Deer Valley, Utah, listed at $5.25 million. The property comes complete with 9.5 bathrooms and is entirely furnished with custom-made furniture. The real-estate Web site Zillow.com describes the 10-year-old ski cabin as the "perfect retreat" with "several gathering areas [that] provide enough space for lots of family and/or guests."

Also on the market is the Romneys' chief residence in the posh suburban Boston neighborhood of Belmont, where most home prices run well into the millions. The Romney house, which comes with a tennis court and 2.5 acres of land, has yet to be listed, though the Boston Globe estimates the price will be set at $3 million - $1 million less than what the home was worth 2 years ago.

Eric Fehrnstrom, a spokesman for Romney, said the moves are not an indication the nation's flagging economy has affected the Romney family.

"Now that the children are all grown with families of their own, the Romneys have too much space and are downsizing and simplifying," Fehrnstrom said.

The former governor is still holding on to a large retreat on Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire and a recently purchased $12 million home in La Jolla, California. Fehrnstrom also told CNN Romney plans to buy a condominium in Boston.

"They want to maintain Massachusetts as their official residence, but it will be an apartment-size dwelling," he said. "Massachusetts is where the Romneys raised a family, where Mitt Romney started his business and where he was governor for four years, so they have an emotional attachment to the state and many friends there."

Liberals hate people who earn money for themselves and don't look toward the government for handouts. This is the only way the Democrats win...get as many people as possible reliant on the federal government. Democrats promote a nanny-state – forget about self-government.

Romney should be applauded for succeeding and achieving what most of us are working toward. Instead, Democrats demonize and try to diminish his success because it didn't come from the government.

mrlgh   February 17th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Ya, you know, when the kids get older and all...I mean what are they gonna do with all that space? use it as storage, maybe convert it to a garage or something. I mean, what a headache...may as well sell it and save the property taxes on it or something. Maybe take a little vacation or perhaps buy and election or something.

marty   February 17th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

So Mitt should give the money to charity, huh? Check the stats, conservatives outgive liberals in charity, unless you count giving someone else's money to charity(like the liberals do)! How much does Teddy K give, or George Soros, the liberal moneybags? If it is good for Republicans it ought to be good for Democrats, too. Put up or shut up.

Faith Restored   February 17th, 2009 2:52 pm ET

So all you Mitt lovers on here...how many homes you got to sell? And spare me the hard work blah blah when you don't seem fit to extend the same "ethics" to others who didn't have a silver spoon in their mouth and worked just as hard as Mitt. He's the last person you should be holding up as an example. Oprah's more of a rags to riches success story than Rommey will ever be.

John   February 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

That sucks... you finally get to own some stuff and the Economy backfires... oh well...

Carlos   February 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

The home in Utah has 9.5 bathrooms. Why would a home need nearly 10 full bathrooms? This makes no sense to me.

repuke   February 17th, 2009 2:51 pm ET

Mit Romney comes from money his father was a Governor. His whole family is connected. Now Obama is self made he did not have contacts in high places to give him jobs after his well off Daddy paid for all his expenses while he went through school. Mitt Romney self made man is a joke. I am not saying he is a bad man just not self made people.

Are the low-information Republicans that phobic about Mormons?

Overindulgence...How so ever did we here in the U.S. get ourselves into the mess we are in? I wonder. I know this does not apply to many hard working honest Americans, however, there are many many it does apply to. If only not for deregulation, tax loopholes, et al business corruption we could separate the criminals from the truly noble.

Lets see McCain owns 8 homes (each one over a million dollars some cost several million) Romney owns how many? At least these 3 are worth $20 million and the one in New Hampshire isn't listed here as to how much it cost.........9.5 bathrooms in the cabin.......my my these are just the people who can reallly feel the heartache and hardships that we main street americans are feeling......these are the Republicans that want more taxes cuts so they can keep getting richer and buying these nice homes, while the rest of us are sucked down into the sewer............The GOP has lost touch with AMERICANS and what we need and what we are going through........that is why they have NO business running our government........

Matt, Chico, CA   February 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Why does this have be related to the "recession"? Maybe he just doesn't spend time there anymore? At any rate, this is not political and has no business on a political ticker

kevin   February 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Uncle jimbo, no one from chicago needs to give advice to anyone abotu how to run things. Nothing good comes out of chicago, especially dirty politicians

Jeri   February 17th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

To Karen in Phoenix, what, you rather have that blubbering Barney Frank, Nance Polesi and Harry Reid and that president who stood up and lied to the people saying there was no PORK in the package. What about nancy pelosi who got 20M for salt rats in California instead of the hard working people who have lost their jobs and can't feed their children. And what about your big $13.00. You can donate it to the unproductive people who steal everyday from every hard working taxpayer in this country. Oh excuse me, are you one of them.

Michiganian   February 17th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

I'm astounded that anyone needs 4 posh residences! What is the matter with people? With homeless folks, charities needing help, myriads of medical problems in this country-why can't these people with way too many millions just help others? When is your income just too high? Why is it that a man who professes being religious has all these millions to burn? At least Rick Warren has the sense to practice what Jesus preached–they give away 90% of their income.

txniner   February 17th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

Any of you blabberging fools that call out this man's success (wealth) ever call out John Kerry or Ted Kennedy – or any other wealthy Democrat/Liberal for that matter. BTW, how many houses does John Kerry have. Wasn't he YOUR candidate for President recently? You might want to answer that by looking up the word hypocrite! And finally, NO – this ISN'T news, it's CNN!

Tines   February 17th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Good for him for having the money to have bought these in the first place. I'm a liberal and I say more power to him.

I do totally agree on the comments about the words 9500 square foot and cabin beinf mutually exclusive. But, I wish I had the $$ to buy the place. Looks killer.

And I also agree with the comments that say, "THIS IS NEWS?!?!"

Carramea   February 17th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

Milt inheirited most of his money. Do you know he makes money by buying companies and liquadating them. Nice guy.......... NOT

Bud Burgoon-Clark   February 17th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Nobody needs THAT much money. Tither or no, it is OBSCENE.

Chloë   February 17th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

"Now that the children are all grown with families of their own, the Romneys have too much space and are downsizing and simplifying," Fehrnstrom said.

I had to laugh. Of course, now that the children are grown up, four mansions is MUCH too much space.

And to this comment:

"Funny how some see the Amercian dream as a bad thing…"

Is the American Dream now to be as gluttonous and excessive as possible? Is four mansions while the less fortunate starve the ideal of success? The pursuit of happiness...if that makes you happy I suppose. Personally, I couldn't live with myself.

Kim   February 17th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

"Downsizing" from 9,500 square feet (one of the houses only)??? Please forgive me while I pick myself up from the floor, laughing. I don't care which political party someone belongs to; please tell me why anyone needs that many square feet in a "CABIN". How can someone with this much conspicious wealth relate to the average middle income worker (like me) struggling to stay afloat in these times?

Bill   February 17th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Wow look at these comments. Ever seen so many crazy fanatics on CNN that hate Republicans being financially successful. By the way if he does donate any money it will be put in a place where it will help a hell of lot more than $13/week for the average American. We could have had a president who was had real record of success in life. Instead we have talking points like transparency and change but we are getting neither just more pork.

w.l. jones   February 17th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Every American get goverment hand out from national security, local police protection. street and highways. clean water, ports and airport the list go on and on give me a break.

Howard   February 17th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Oh who cares. This isn't news. I do find it comical to think that Mitt Romney can say he has any connection to good hard, working Americans. Do most hard working Americans have to unload their multi-million dollar mansions?? I don't dislike the guy because he made money, I dislike the fact that he fantasizes about having anything in common with most Americans!!! This guys will never have a clue about what is going on with most Americans. At least a few years ago Obama was too broke to rent a car to get to the Democratic convention in 2000. He may still have a connection to the rest of America. Romney no way!!!

randy   February 17th, 2009 2:36 pm ET

He is an American success story, if you consider an American success story a rich person getting even richer. It is always nice to have a little start up capital.

whatsuccess   February 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

This is man who said at the Republican convention:
"We need to take a WEED-WHACKER to ALL Government regulations on business"

Yeah, Mitt!! No regulations for rich, white, Republicans like you, who have totally trashed our country's economy!!! It's going to take us Democrats years to clean up your mess and get our economy going again......just like Clinton did in '92.

Christine   February 17th, 2009 2:33 pm ET

Since when is 9,500 sq feet considered a cabin! Some people's homes are big enough to be hotels.

Patricia Tharp   February 17th, 2009 2:32 pm ET

In answer to Don Woolsey's comment. Self Determination is always easier when helped along by Dad's money. Romney was not a poor kid from the inner city by a long shot.

Romney is just another rich republican that is clueless.

Independent Dave, Cedar Rapids, Iowa   February 17th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

Pam   February 17th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

So Mittens is trying to raise money for his next presidential run. No surprise there. He would be better off just flushing that money down the toilet because he doesn't have a chance vs. Obama.
Give it up Mittens!

MW in MD   February 17th, 2009 2:28 pm ET

He is unloading TWO MANSIONS? The average person in this country will never have ONE mansion. Talk about out of touch!

Sandy in Racine   February 17th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Perhaps Mitt can donate the Utah mansion to plural families in desparate need of new digs..............

Jay   February 17th, 2009 2:27 pm ET

Why on Earth do you need 9.5 bathrooms?

APK   February 17th, 2009 2:26 pm ET

In regards to a previous comment made about Mr. Romney donating his money from his sold mansions to charity. He already does that, and it is called Tithing. I think Mr. Romney did a good thing as he is looking to save money as well. Mr. Romney is a good example of a hard working American. I really hope that he runs in 2012, too bad the car industry didn't take his advice earlier about bankruptcy, it seems that it may still happen AFTER taking the tax payers money.

reggie   February 17th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Romney worked hard and earned everthing he has. No free handouts form the liberals and their belief in sharing the wealth. Palin/Romney 2012

WI Cheesehead   February 17th, 2009 2:23 pm ET

Elitism in its true colors for Mitt, he’ll never relate to me in his wildest dreams. I have one home with a mortgage on it and I am trying to figure out how I can get some of the “Obama money” to upgrade my exterior doors to make my home more energy efficient.

uncle jimbo - Chicago   February 17th, 2009 2:22 pm ET

Don – I hate to bust your bubble but a little research will tell you Mit is a second generation pol who is partialy responsable for the way health care & hospitals were privitized for profit, thus one of the reasons our health care is so expensive.
He came from a multi million $$$ family, I guess that made it real tuff for him to start off.

Farrell, Houston, Tx   February 17th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Just one more example of how another rich greedy republican has more than what he needs and will protect his interest and don't care about yours. If you think for one minute people like Romney and McCain for example would want to walk in a poor man shoes, then you are living in another world.

Diane   February 17th, 2009 2:20 pm ET

Rich Romney can't relate to poor America! One clue of why the Republican party is out on it's ear.....Romney is one of those clues!

Me   February 17th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

"Who cares to bet that Romney won't donate a single dollar of the proceeds from the sale of either house to any charity."

Where would you even come up with this? Have you seen his tax returns? Cause I saw Joe Bidens'. In 10 years he's given a grand total of $2,000 to charity while averaging 6 figures a year. Facts are stubborn things.

"This man had better NOT even think of running for President!!! He has NO IDEA what it is like to be an average American worker!!!! The man would be worse than Bush or McCain!! Why do the republicans always pick spoiled rich boys!!?"

Obama clears several million a year. Does HE know? If so, then please tell me the cut-off. How many million a year is too many?

"Well now, how the mighty have fallen."

By selling two of his four mansions?

"He's probably one of those people that Republicans keep talking about. You know ….. someone who bought more house than they can afford."

His mansions were bought and paid in full. He didn't take out a zero down variable interest rate and gamble that they'd never go up.

A rich man, who morally and ethically made his millions, sold some mansions. Since when, in America, did this become something to dislike him over?

Art Michaelson   February 17th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

The ex-GOV. and ex- Presidental hopeful in spite of all the negative talk is a living example of the Farming and Business success of the average MORMEN believer. You may think their religious ideas strange but give credit where credit is due, They know how hard work can lead tlo LOOOOTS of MONEY.

serah   February 17th, 2009 2:19 pm ET

What?

Tony   February 17th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

I still remember when this guy was asked if his viewpoints were a violation of the Constitution. His answer... I'll need to consult with my lawyers. Nice!

uncle jimbo - Chicago   February 17th, 2009 2:17 pm ET

How will they ever get by on only two more mansions left ?
Should'nt we all feel sorry for them ?
Maybe the GOP supporters will hold an extra fund raiser for him.

dan   February 17th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

For all you people whining about Romney's wealth if you were honest with yourself I bet 99% would jump at it in a heartbeat. Your whining just shows your jealousy. He earned his money which is supposed to be the American Dream. Now the culture is if you got alot of money you somehow must be a bad person, pretty sad commentary since this country was founded by and built by these types of people. Now its looking to the government to give me mine not going out and making it happen for yourself. Here's a news flash not everyone makes it to the top in America but everyone has a chance. I would think you liberals particularly would understand that since BO was elected president. He is an example that you can make it in America from humble beginnings but god forbid is the person that makes it to the top turns out to be a republican then they must be the devil and only made it but abuse of the system.

kuriya   February 17th, 2009 2:16 pm ET

He was born with a sliver spoon in his mouth. Remember his father was at GM. With all salary his father brougth home Romney wanted GM to go bankrupt the spoon that fed him when he was a child. He selling his mansion, this economy crisis will not only make the poor suffer which we are use to but the rich coming to our level is a welcome idea. Nothing last for ever. Next is McCain.

To Karen in Phoenix, why do you have to label Romney as a "spoiled rich boy" without knowing the facts about how Romney gained his wealth. Yes, he was born into a wealthy family, but he is also a very astute businessman who accumulated his wealth many years prior to running for office. Isn't the "American Dream" what everyone is supposed to strive for?

elizabennet   February 17th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

I am a liberal democrat and I am wondering why we think Romney being rich is such a bad thing. Sounds like he earned his money and did not bilk anyone or cheat anyone or act like a total hypocrite in the process.

Why is everyone so quick to be bitter and snarky? What happened to being gracious. He's a rich man selling some of his properties. He's not the president. He's not hurting anyone. Big Deal.

Why hate on this guy?

bsmith171   February 17th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Joshua College Station Texas   February 17th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Why doesn't the Mormon millionaire live his religion, sell all his houses except one (who needs 4-5 houses for themselves?) and help the poor. He might not say it, but he believes he is the political candidate of values, always relevant in morally troubles times. But what he really is is a wealth-obsessed, self-righteous, judgmental blowhard.

Karen- Change is coming   February 17th, 2009 2:11 pm ET

Paul, Nodak   February 17th, 2009 2:10 pm ET

He should take the money from the sale of the homes and spend it on "Mormons are people too" ads. Otherwise he'll be winning the bronze again in '12. His candidacy depends completely on what happens with the economy. When the Obama recovery kicks into high gear, Mitt will disappear.

Obama '12

John   February 17th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Mitt, Times are tough, huh!!!

You are forced to sell your mansion (I don't think you are going to sell is voluntarily, I bet you are one of us who are forced to downsize), and you rally on all the morning shows and/or talk shows opposing Stimulus Bill. Good job.. Keep it up!

I agree with Jared I would keep Deer Valley home ;)

Lisa Libra   February 17th, 2009 2:08 pm ET

Gee, maybe they could spread their wealth around and help some families who are losing their homes? All the money from just ONE of those houses could help out hundreds of people.
I imagine that in a perfect world people like the Romney's, you know so Godly and all, would actually want to help out others who are 'suffering'.

Nope, not gonna happen. Why? Because the biggest 'Christians' on this planet are nothing of the sort. More smoke blown up the butts of Americans.

Helping people out, even it is through your wallet, is 'Christian' after all. I'm guessing that if they called up a random lawyer or a mortage firm they could find tons of folks who with only say 3000.00 a piece could save them and let them keep their homes. Have their children not worried about where they are going to live, watching their parents fight because they are nothing more then stressed.

Novel idea. I just wish politcians really meant it when they say they really care about the citizens of the USA.

Prove it.

There are a lot of Dems who don't take handouts, just as there are a lot of Republicans who do. Grow up people. Welfare was created to protect children (who can't work), and if it weren't needed we would not have it.

Stop trying to put everyone in a neat little box regarding something you no nothing about.

It's good Mitt never took handouts, and I'm happy for his success, but he will never be my president. Not because he's rich, but because he is clueless when it comes to leading this great country. The US is not a business, but a country–there is a difference.

Romney is an idiot and needs to get a personality.

When I think of the American dream – I definitely don't think of Mitt Romney.

I mean, who names their kid 'MITT' anyway besides wealthy out of touch people anyway.....

Seriously people – you don't think that Mitt had help from family and contacts he got FROM his family? He is a product of this BAD generation of people who have taken very bad care of this country. Don't give him ANY breaks..... He's already rich, are you?

Rich and wealthy people are in the doghouse as far as I am concerned. They've proven that they don't care about anyone but themselves!

Mitt is one of those people......period!

some of you people act like Obama really understands the american people any more thatn Romney does. Obama is worht several million dollars and lived in a Hyde Park Loft, hardley tough living. ALL presidential candidates are rich, theres nothing wrong with success....why are we critisizing a succesful man for being a little more thrifty, would you all own small apartments if your net worth was 26 mil??? i doubt it.

Brian   February 17th, 2009 2:04 pm ET

Karen from Phoenix, you do realize that the Obamas are worth millions of dollars as well, right? For that matter so are Pelosi, Reid, and pretty much Obama's entire cabinet (after all, they neglected to pay more in taxes than what is likely your annual salary). The Democrat leaders are just as rich and spoiled as the Republicans. The only difference is that the rich spoiled Democrats pretend that they care about the working poor in order to get votes before they shaft them.

Jeffrey Root   February 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Wow Romney. Way to set the example as a Mormon. Isn't owning 4 houses being worldly? Haven't you ever heard of provident living? I understand you are selling two of your four houses but you still will have 2 more mansions. Why? because you can. Come on. Set the example. It's probably time you learned what is most important on this Earth. You are a Christian. Besides the Temples, how many mansions would Jesus have?

Brandon   February 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

I can almost guarantee that Mitt has donated more to charities than any Democrat politician. (Probably combined)

What a hypocritical statement! Give me a break!

If Mitt comes back in 2012 with a less attacking tone than the 08 primaries, he will be a prime choice for Presidential nominee.

cory   February 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

"downsizing and simplifying" preparing for a presidential run in 2012 is more like it...

john   February 17th, 2009 2:02 pm ET

Mitt Romney is a joke. He is way out of touch with regular Americans. Why does CNN give him attention??

Him and Sarah Palin should run together in 2012. Make it easy for president Obama to win again.

Tim   February 17th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

Don Woolsey, are you kidding me?! Romney as a self-made man?! Mitt's pop was governor of Michigan, a presidential candidate, head of American Motors, and from a wealthy family of Mormon royalty. That's what got him into Harvard Business School. A smart, talented man, but it helps to have those connections.

Alan   February 17th, 2009 2:01 pm ET

I think Romney just wants to make sure he has LESS mansions than McCain did when he runs again.

Ron   February 17th, 2009 2:00 pm ET

If a "cabin" has 9.5 bathrooms, I wonder how many square feet an "apartment sized" place in Boston will have.

Soccer Nana   February 17th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

"James February 17th, 2009 12:15 pm ET

Mitt Romney earned his money before he went into politics not like many of the dems that seem to get Rich after politics. My guess is that he didn't get the help of conviticed felon Tony Rezko like Obama did to purchase his HydePark Mansion."

What does President Obama have to do with this? Secondly, President and Mrs. Obama purchased their home at market value for 1.65 million dollars; the real estate agent who sold them the property is the wife of Rezko; the Obamas used their own money to purchase their home and they also purchased some additional land (at market value) next door to their home from the Rezko's. This is all legal; so, what is your point?

President Obama earned his millions from the sale of his books and his wife's six figure income.

Go find a clue, hater.

kevin   February 17th, 2009 1:59 pm ET

A typical liberal comment, trying to scorn people who work hard. Instead of trying to bring successful people down to your level how about you get out and work hard and make your own money rather than expecting to have it handed to you. People tend to get what they deserve, so take a look in the mirror before you take your anger out on successful people.

ed   February 17th, 2009 1:58 pm ET

Hey numb nuts the next presidential election is 2012. The American public already knows you and many remember the olympics you ran. PS how did you get to be so rich?

Mike   February 17th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

If 9,500 sf is a cabin, what's their definition of "apartment sized"? Maybe that's problem. When Americans talk about living in a small home, the republicans think, "20,000 sf is more than enough to raise a family. I could understand if all they had was a cabin."

umu ule   February 17th, 2009 1:57 pm ET

Thank God this man wasn't president. His policies would have been influenced by trying to protect his own wealth (where have we heard this before?).

If he rich and downsizing what are poor people supposed to do? Move from a small house to a cardboard box.

Erik   February 17th, 2009 1:53 pm ET

I think Romney doesn't want to get squashed with the "How many houses do you own?" line in 2012. It didn't work out very well for McCain, so now is the time to dump the mansions. Then he can say he hasn't owned those places in years. Sure, it's just spin. But I think favorable spin....if that is possible.

wiz   February 17th, 2009 1:52 pm ET

Quote from Bob from Kentucky.

"He's probably one of those people that Republicans keep talking about. You know ….. someone who bought more house than they can afford."

Good one Bob! :-)

At this point, I have to sell at price below what I paid and I owe twice as much. A very special thanks to the brokers who give money to people who can't afford their house.

I never missed a mortage payment, but I wonder if Mitt would help me out since he has extra?

Robbie Day   February 17th, 2009 1:50 pm ET

why is everyone making such negative, petty remarks? He is downsizing , what he does with his money and property is his own business.

Allen   February 17th, 2009 1:49 pm ET

Some of the posters here are clueless. The economy doesn't affect the rich? Did anyone read this article. Romney will be selling his Belmont home for $1M less than it was worth 2 years ago. I think taking a $1M hit would qualify has being affected by the poor economy. Also, Bob from Kentucky makes a snide comment about Romney buying a house he can't afford. I don't recall the article saying anything about foreclosures. If he can't afford to maintain 4 residences, at least he's selling the properties and not walking away so the American tax payers foot the bill.

AD   February 17th, 2009 1:48 pm ET

Lol.

"The more expensive of the two homes is a 9,500 square foot cabin..."

9500 square feet is not a cabin, it's a zip code.

Some see this kind of wealth accumulation as the American Dream. It is a dream alright. A kind delusion. Could Romney accumulate such wealth without his access, contacts, and connections? Do we now see the danger when one is encouraged to accumulate beyond need? 13 houses there and here, 9 bath rooms here and there? Is this the meaning of capitalism? The rich gets richer and the poor, poorer. For the poor, even the little they have will be taken from them and given to those who have. This is the American Dream. This is the American way. You know what? IT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE

sittin here and watching people whine about others with money. Mitt comes from a family where his father worked in the auto industry in it's glory days and Mitt has applied those tried and true ideals to make his own way. It was not until the some other 2nd, 3rd generation executives who walked into a dynasty only to loot the coffers. GE Is a prime example, once considered the most well run company in the nation/world has since been soaked dry by poor management and even worse leadership. But let's not dwell on the fact that once the current liberal management of GE took over their stock was near 100 bucks. Now trading around 10 bucks. The problem is these dirt bags are still killing the business and hurting the families of the workforce

Amazed   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Rob   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I'd just like to take a moment and thank Comrade Chairman Obama and the Democrat Politburo. Usually one has to go to a rap concert or set of an adult film to get screwed this hard. You all have done it with this so-called 'stimulus' bill.

What part of the millions set aside so that Pelosi can save some flippin' mouse is considered a stimulus? Or how about the billions Reid crammed in for his train from Vegas to LA? No pork? Sure.

Hal   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

I wonder if he will put the money into the Mormon Church or if he will use it finance his next political campaign?? He should use it to save the GOP he is one of the last sane Republicans on the planet. The only problem is that he is a Mormon and so much of the GOP base are bigots that they won't vote for him.

churchill   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Earned his money indeed. A very very hard working man indeed. When you scheme and con unsuspecting victims and seperate them from their money, it is rationalized as sound business STRATEGY.... under CAPITALISM. Indeed, ROOMNEY is an Honest man. He earned his wealth.

What   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Ok, so apparently some of you skipped over the part where it says he's worth $250MM. He could practically give these houses away and not miss the money. I have to agree that THIS IS NOT NEWS, but he man did make his money as a business guru prior to entering politics. Most of the people on here, I'm sure, has the dream of making more money and have taken actions to do so. Why is there such hostility when someone makes the RIGHT decisions in life that leads them to a position of great wealth? It seems like "the rich is evil, until I become one of them."

shawn hayes   February 17th, 2009 1:35 pm ET

Thats why I would never vote for a republican, no where, no how, I along with millions of people can't relate to him or any other republican for that matter. Remember folks only what you do for Christ will last God does not care about how many homes you can buy or sell He owns them, however you will be judged on did you feed the poor and did you give shelter to the homeless etc.....

Amazed   February 17th, 2009 1:33 pm ET

Poor guy, look at what he's been driven to do. As for Dimwit, I don't think the American Dream includes owning multiple mansions. For most, it means owning their own house instead of renting from a slumlord, having a job and being able to raise kids without needing welfare. If you don't get it, it's not our fault.

Didn't anyone ever teach the Romney family to turn a light off when you leave a room? I thought the house was on fire at first glance.

Stefan   February 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

Yeah, it is called irony that the same left-wing liberal people are up in arms and making insinuations about Mitt selling a couple of his homes, don't give a flip or say anything about the Clintons or the Kennedys or Pelosi or Rockerfeller..... it's okay to be wealthy if you're a left-wing liberal. Keep on hating, haters.

You should ask yourself why obama spent so much of your money to get a job that pays less than a CEO.... hmm..could it be the payoffs from the lobbyists and the payoffs from the influence seekers? We should ask Frank, Pelosi and Reid how much money they've been paid under the table. But, then again, its okay with you haters, since they are one of your own.

Julia   February 17th, 2009 1:30 pm ET

And where is the headline "Dem leaders keep their mansions"? Who cares about this! The only persons who care about this are Republican hating liberals who hate anyone who has been successful without the government to help them, unless of course they are liberals.

David B   February 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

He's down sizing because his kids have grown up??? Good Lord, I know he is a Mormon but how many kids does he have to require that much space. What a joke, this guy with four mansions who has made his living by stripping down companies and sending the jobs overseas, tried to run for president as someone who understood the economy and the working man. Oh, he understood the economy, the one that has nearly destroyed our country, and he wants nothing more than to continue the exact same disastrous economics that has caused our people to lose their jobs at the expense of corporate profits brought about by cheap labor, outsourcing jobs, and union busting. What a fine American he is. I hope he can get by with just two mansions, it's going to be hard though, I'm sure.

Jero   February 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

tell me, why is this news again? Just some guy with to many houses, and now getting rid of 2. Whats the big deal?

stephanie   February 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

liberals dont hate rich liberals because they all liberals tend to want to share the wealth, unlike the greedy republican rich, who think they earned it by their own efforts, but in reality it was inherited or stolen. the business system most valued by republicans is the master/slaves system evidenced by voting against minimum wage increases and union-busting activities.

Keri   February 17th, 2009 1:29 pm ET

I dare say it's more likely that he is looking ahead to 2012 and trying to avoid the "out of touch" tag that Obama hung - quite successfully - on John McCain.

James   February 17th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

Yea poor Obama has to live in a mansion that only costs 2 million. Not bad for a community organizer though??????????????
Romney who is an "economic wiz" knows a little more about bussiness success than Obama and really would have made a better President. Too bad he was too much of an unknown at the time.

Roland   February 17th, 2009 1:28 pm ET

At least this show he's in touch with the hardship of normal Americans, by the way that way sarcasm (Facists\Republicans dont understand sarcasm)

Peggy - TX   February 17th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Democrats do not hate the rich; rather they want everyone to have an opportunity to have their hard work be profitable. Presently, the top 1% of income earners in America are skimming off the majority of this nation’s wealth, which is consistent with pure capitalism principles where money tend to become more concentrated in the hands of a few, but NOT consistent with long term economic stability.

Jim   February 17th, 2009 1:27 pm ET

Why did CNN report on this? To bump-set-spike a great business mind? or so that unclever liberals can take pot-shots at it. Shame on him for making himself and then making sound investment and monetary decisions. Who cares

There is nothing wrong with wealth. We all want to be wealthy – or most of us do. I have a lotto ticket in my pocket right now.

What IS wrong is a system that distributes wealth to a tiny percentage of the population. Think about it. How much of the nation's wealth should the top 1% of the population possess? Right now they own one-third of all American wealth. Right now, the top 20% of Americans own 85% of America's wealth. The bottom 80% of Americans, you and me, own 15% of the nation's wealth, and the gap is growing. The CEO of the company you work for earns 450 times what you earn. Does he do 450 times as much work.?

Do we want a future in which 90% of Americans are merely tenants in their own nation? Shall we go back to the days of landlords and serfs

Larry, Apex, North Carolina   February 17th, 2009 1:24 pm ET

Simply, it is sinful to have a 9,500 square foot home-or several of them. This guy is so pious and religious, but he cares nothing for God or for his fellow man; his mask is phony religion and is REAL love (and crutch) is the love of money and the love of power. What could be done for the poor of Haiti with the money he (and his ilk) have poured into these homes? Think of the shelters and programs that could be used for the homeless of this country with the money he has thrown away on his luxuries. Thread bare orphanages in India and El Salvador could have real food and schools-but instead the money is used for custom made furniture for his palaces. There will be a price to pay for this, Mr. Romney-and you will not be able to afford it...

Denine   February 17th, 2009 1:23 pm ET

Belt-tightening my a–! Romney knows he didn't win the nomination because most of America saw him as another elitist. He watched how America went after McCain for his excesses so he's trying to "better" himself for 2012. Nice try, Romney – you're done before you even get started.

Mansions For Sale   February 17th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

What a stand up guy. He's getting rid of his mansions. He's a prince–NOT.

Hey Rom,
I've got a great idea. Why don't you sell two of your mansions and make a down payment on one of McCain's nine or ten homes. I'm sure he'd give you a great deal. He may even kick in all of Sarah's clothes.

Anna   February 17th, 2009 1:22 pm ET

I'm not sure why there are so many negative commments about this. He earned his money – isn't that the American Dream that so many talk about? So he has a couple of houses to sell, who cares? Is he asking for a bailout? Foreclosure? Is he costing me tax dollars? Those are my concerns.
Many politicans have more money than I will ever come close to – both Dem's and Rep's. Both parties share the blame for the economic mess this country is in – if we, the majority of America, don't start figuring out that both parties have led us astray we're going to keep falling aprt.

debra   February 17th, 2009 1:21 pm ET

One of the reasons the economy is in such bad shape is because of the distribution of wealth. There is a finite amount of money out there to be had. If one man owns too much of it, it impacts how the remaining amount is distributed. Now think about this on a little bit larger scale. If a few men own too much of it, everyone else has just that much less. At some point the rest of us can not afford a home or food. A few greedy men didn't know when to stop hording money and gorging the public for their so called expertise. Nothing was enough. The American public paid for it by earning less. Money doesn't grow on trees. There is only a finite amount of it available. Now for the economy to recover- these rich men who are probably hiding the money out of the country so they don't have to pay taxes on it, need to figue out a way of spending some of it and returning it into the economy. Did you know that if Warren Buffet sells his stocks – he can only do it a little at a time to not effect the stock market? This is because he owns too much. No one man needs this much money. The economy actually needs the money to be distributed to a certain point or you get what we have now- a recession.

Ha ha..morons. He is a business whiz. Understand what that means. He knows his own worth and should be allowed to enjoy his talent and wealth however he wants to. But these are elites and unfortuantely not genetically shared obviously with some ignorant fools who have no idea how much they're worth. If they did we would not be in this mess. Americans always were proud of the saying " survival of the fittest".Don't necessarily need a degree. Romney is a talented business man and knows when to unload. I hinted that he should have been VP 2008 because of his business acumen and McCains military background. What America needs at this time.

steverino   February 17th, 2009 1:19 pm ET

Clearly Romney is setting himself up for a 2nd presidential campaign for the 2010 election. He doesn't want to get trapped with the "how many houses do you own?" question.

walleye   February 17th, 2009 1:18 pm ET

I dont care how much $$ you have, why would anyone need four mansions. This just tells me how much the rich like to expend the worlds resources. Warren Buffet has lived in his home for most of his life and I am sure he is quite comfortable.

CNN: ""Now that the children are all grown with families of their own, the Romneys have too much space and are downsizing and simplifying," Fehrnstrom said."

That is a sick joke, right?

Alicia   February 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

For those who ask if this is news.....DARN RIGHT IT IS!!!!!

The Republicans are claiming to be in touch with everyday Americans. As we can see, he is in touch with Rich Everyday Americans. They offered nothing on the stimulus that they were asked about and lorded over for eight long, long, long years.

PJP   February 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

I will be so glad when all you republican haters have to eat your words. They will be sour in your stomach!!!

Quick   February 17th, 2009 1:15 pm ET

An obvious political move.

Kevin in Ohio   February 17th, 2009 1:14 pm ET

More hate from the left wing krazies who demonize success and wealth in America. And for those of you who don't believe that the economy has adversely impacted the "rich".... you are dead wrong. And it will get worse because almost any incentive for investing by the "rich" is about to disappear, thanks to King Obama I.

sg   February 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

Noah – I agree. Libs/Dems are total hypocrits. They want everyone else to pay higher taxes except themselves. Why don't you libs answer this question – Why are there so many wealthy libs and dems? I would think that most of them would give all or most their money away if they really believed in what they preach.

Moe, NY   February 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

@ Ellis: I agree with you Romney probably is selling some of his mansions for political reasons, not that it will help him. Hey, maybe the McCains' are in the market for another mansion, I believe they only have seven at the present time.

Eric   February 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

It was his magic underwear that got him the houses in the first place. Was this one of the republican nutcases who believes in creationism???

Tom   February 17th, 2009 1:13 pm ET

This is definitely political. He saw all of the criticism heaped on McCain for owning all of those homes. Now the economy is even worse. Very poor time to run while owning FOUR mega-million dollar homes. Also easy target for environmentalists to attack, look at all of the energy used by two people.

Now, somehow, he and his wife will have to struggle through life with only a $12M home in California, a large lakeside NH retreat, and what will undoubtably be a very upscale downtown Boston condo. I sure hope they are up to it.

Dan from Kitchener   February 17th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

I guess the Democrats not lowering the taxes for the rich and elite has taken it's toll on Mittens. Oh well I guess he still go out and gut another company and put thousands more out of work to salve his conscience.

apprec8   February 17th, 2009 1:12 pm ET

He has to unload those houses before he attempts to run for president. Those extra house would sink him just like McCains did!

I have a question...why do we keep electing (rich) people who can relate to the needs of the average American? They act like parents who know us better than we know ourselves. If your counselor could't relate to your issues, would you keep seeing him? Just wondering...

debra   February 17th, 2009 1:10 pm ET

This must be Romneys idea of putting money back into the economy.

From previous article regarding Obama going to CO to sign bill. Why does everything have to be overly orchastrated with Obama? Nothing against him but why not just sign the bill from the white house????

Jim D. in Costa Mesa   February 17th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

Lets see...he owns four mansions full of customized furniture. I wonder how all the people he laid off are doing. Tens of thousands! Romney acquired all that wealth by putting people out of work and reducing salaries. He's famous for busting unions so that workers will be at the comp[lete mercy of people like him. I'll bet you he didn't take a pay cut.

And when they asked him why none of his five military age sons had not joined the military to fight in Iraq, a war he fully supports and would have been more than happy to escalate, he said they could better serve our country by working on his election campaign. He's a greedy hypocrite and his sons are a bunch of pampered cowards. I guess fighting and dying for your country is for the "little people".

JR   February 17th, 2009 1:09 pm ET

why is this news? I sold a house too. Anyone care? Anyone?

Dan, in this market, I think that DOES qualify as news! :)

How can Romney possibly speak for the average American when he (they) don't live on the same plane. This guy has nothing in common with 99.9% of those people he claims to speak for.

9500 square feet doesn't constitute a cabin, in my opinion.

Why do people get so jealous of someone for being rich?
Romey WORKED and EARNED his money. A lot of people want the government to give them handouts instead of earning their money themselves, the old-fashioned way.

obviously not a conservative when it comes to money is he?

republicans hate america   February 17th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

Mitt Capone   February 17th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

"9,500 square foot cabin, 9.5 bathrooms" –that's a cabin??

That is one lavish shack!!! Cabins are usually the size of Mitt Romney's master bedroom. (or walk-in closet) We sure dodged a bullet with this aloof Mormon Mafioso. Mitt doesn't have a clue...

I hope he loses the rest of his multi-million-dollar "cabins" like the rest of America.

Justice.

Wasilla Moose Killa   February 17th, 2009 1:04 pm ET

Stacy   February 17th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

There are some idiot comments here...

...he is not in foreclosure
...he has not fallen
...who cares if he doesn't give any of the proceeds to charity, they've given more (percentage) than Pres Obama and VP Biden combined
...I know of few working families having a hard time. yeah, we stopped doing somethings, but only those who have always been down are still down. Yeah, I know 8 folks who lost jobs, but are working again, and not looking for a handout
...lets not forgot that Obama is part of the rich crowd they like to talk about, and he had his money hidden in a tax shelter too.

I am still waiting on that change I can believe in, oh I forgot, he put lots of Bill's folks back in and even one or two of George's

Liz in DC   February 17th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Mitt Romney is doing this to prep for his 2012 presidential bid–he doesn't want to look like another McCain. Ask yourself, can you vote for someone who belongs to a cult that excluded blacks up until 1967? If you like the Taliban, you will like Mitt imposing his bizarre religious views on you.

Lilarose in Bandon, Oregon   February 17th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

Mitt, why not donate those homes to homeless people?

Why not use them as camps for kids?

Why not use them as rehab homes?

I can think of lots of uses for those homes.

Ken   February 17th, 2009 1:03 pm ET

It really amazes me that their are so many RICH people that have several homes and huge homes I must say, while there are so many small and necessary homes, being lost to foreclosure?

Like the banks that the taxpayers are bailing out, the saying "The Rich Get Richer, and the POOR Get Poorer"

It amazes me how much it costs just to move the President around is beyond me. Is this cost really necessary?

As our lord has said, "The meek shall inherit the earth".

baker   February 17th, 2009 1:02 pm ET

How many people lost their homes (probably only one home each) because Romney's company bought them out, came in, divided it up, sold it off and shipped it overseas? Think & take a close look before you start to idolize. Mr. Romney is the poster child for profiting from outsourcing. How many homes did he have to start with? Oh, and for you animal lovers out there, remember putting the family dog on top of the car for the family vacation trip. Go ahead, google it. I don't care which side you're on, demand honest and transparency from all politicans and political pundits.

soudns like someone has learned from McPain's mistakes and is unloading to make a run next election.

Average Joe Guy   February 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

James, Mitt Romney was born into politics with a silver everything in his mouth. His father was the Governor of Michigan and ran for the 1968 Republican nomination for POTUS. This is a person born to great priviledge...his name is Willard "Mitt" Romney, after his fathers best bud Willard Hilton, the hotel magnate. It's not like you came from nothing and made something of himself. He had ALL the advantages and simply chose to take them.

JJ in FL   February 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

i think everyone is missing the big picture... he's not "falling on tough times" like the rest of us... he's preparing for a presidential run in 2012. how much hell did we libs give mccain for his 7 houses..? he's gonna try to avoid taking that chance, so he can appear more "average American" when he runs again.

the unloading of his extra properties is entirely political. nothing else!

Tim in Minnesota   February 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

I just love these kinds of message boards. One guy rips liberals and another rips conservatives, which of course have nothing to do with the article. Mitt Romney made a lot of money. Whoopee-do! Good for you! Who really cares what he does with it?
I wonder if he HAD to part with his 9500 ft2 ski mansion or the Belmont extravaganza? Maybe Bernie Madoff with some of Mitt's money? If so, well, here comes the stimulus, Mitt! Just hold on for a little while longer.

Quinn - Houston, Texas   February 17th, 2009 1:01 pm ET

This is what happens when you spend 62 million dollars to buy the presidency of the United States.

Instead of living in the white house, Mitt's getting evicted from his own house. Sad.

CO   February 17th, 2009 1:00 pm ET

Romney earned his money, let him enjoy it. But he's hardly "unloading," as the headline claims, when he's still buying $12 million homes and has plans for a new condo.

nancy   February 17th, 2009 12:59 pm ET

Wow. Is it any wonder that republicans did very well for themselves in the last 8 years? He and John McCain can compete with each other on who has the most homes. While many americans have NO homes. I hope they sleep well at night and they have the audacity to say that PRESIDENT OBAMA is doing everything wrong. They are all now sharing that one brain cell that McCain used so extensively during the campaign. Put up or shut up Repubs.

So let me understand this...many of you posters here hate this guy for being a successful business person?

My goodness, how dare he!!! Why can't he be like the "majority" of Americans and strive to just get by pay check to pay check. The audacity of this man to make his own money, pay his taxes and spend the rest as he sees fit. I'm appalled and hope he gets what he deserves...oh wait, I guess he already has.

southerncousin   February 17th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

This is an irrelavant story for the ticker, apparently just thrown in so the libs can spew hatred for republicans. In the mean time, the Dow is once again showing its "enthusiasm" for Obama's handling of the economy, once again lowerering our pensions and 401K's. Obama is meeting his goal, making all of us dependent on the government and furthering the philosophy of the democrats, that they know how to spend my money better than I do. Elitist snobs.

Jimson Hallway   February 17th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

you people hating on him for the fact that he's rich are simply pathetic. This is a man who built his business and hence fortune from the ground up. He's a GOOD EXAMPLE for all of us to aspire for the american dream, and shame on you for not being able to see over your own shortcomings long enough to see that. He's made good decisions and provided literally THOUSANDS OF JOBS for regular people like you and me.. and for that I'm THANKFUL. You sour people who want to penalize him for being successful are truly sad and pathetic.

Melissa   February 17th, 2009 12:57 pm ET

Liberals do NOT hate rich Americans. The Republicans got us into this mess and now all they're doing is moaning like children because they aren't getting their way anymore.

As for Romney selling his mansions, oh boo hoo. He'll still get millions for them while the rest of us are struggling just to get food on the table and pay the rent.

Maddie   February 17th, 2009 12:56 pm ET

OK, CNN. We get it. Romney is one of those evil white guys and, therefore, we should not even think about electing him president in 2012. I never thought I would see the day when success and intelligence were considered handicaps in getting elected president of the United States.......but then again, I guess that explains why we have who we do in the Oval Office now.

What's so "dreamy" about a supremely sexist and dishonest plutocrat unloading a few of his mansions. Romney oversaw many "regular" Americans losing their jobs while he stashed cash away and bought these "cabins" and mansions. He's an oil slick from way back.

Not true, we do not understand all arrougant, self-righteous repubs that think the little guy is a drag on the economy because he is not rich enought to survive an economic downturn without having to use unemployment insurance or an extension of said benefit.

Instead of "givng fish" repubs would like to hand us all a fishing pole and set us adrift in the ocean, all 5 million of the unemployed.

Jim in Fllorida   February 17th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

CNN is trying to create news on Romney where there is none. If Romney is nothing else he is smarter than Obama, way smarter.

On the flip side, everyone wails about how bad the economy is. Is there any wonder. Our "President" awakes every day and he can't say a single good word about the economy. Obama is Chief Doom and Gloom Officer and his brainless Democratic "leaders" dance to his tune.

While Pakistan commences its fall to Islamic Nazis Obama fiddles. The difference between Pakistan and Iran.?

Stand by – Obama and his administration is clueless to the world. They are too busy jetting arouund the country and the world doing nothing.

Peggy - TX   February 17th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Democrates do not hate the rich, rather they want everyone to have an opertunity to have thier hardwork be profitable. Presently, the top 1% of income earners in American are skimming the majorty of this nations wealth, which is consistent with pure Capitalisim principles, but consistent with long term ecomonmic stability.

hmmmm well, times are tough.. Sad thing is, if it were a republican in the WH romney would receive a bailout or tax break so he can keep one of his 4 houses.

Perhaps Romney is thinking ahead! 2012???. Remember McCain's 9 or 10 houses ....

Eric   February 17th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

Why now?It seems that by all account they feel the pain too.If the poor fail ,the rich too. Hammm!I heard that the president will announce his housing bailout tomorrow? Oooooh No. The solution is tax reduction!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

LAB in Dallas, TX   February 17th, 2009 12:40 pm ET

This is nothing more than political posturing. Let's see...given the rate at which homes are moving in today's market, Romney's properties should be off the books in time for the 2012 presidential election. He's trying to "poor it down" in order to avoid the whole "how many houses do you have?" fiasco. Nice try Mitt...unfortunately, for you, the majority of Americans are not dumb enough to fall for it.

Brian   February 17th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

"Who cares to bet that Romney won't donate a single dollar of the proceeds from the sale of either house to any charity."

Governor Mitt Romney and his wife, Ann, have donated nearly $2.9 million to more than 40 healthcare groups, schools, and other charitable organizations since 1999, including $2.2 million to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a Globe review of Internal Revenue Service documents shows

Last year VP Biden gave $364 to charity... Impressive

Ellie   February 17th, 2009 12:39 pm ET

Mitt, Mitt, Mitt...

Please don't use the excuse of "not needing more space" as an excuse of getting rid of two of your homes. American understands the fact that YOU CAN'T AFFORD TO KEEP THEM buddy.

No "sugar coating or distortions to the truth" is needed, Americans GET it, unlike you and your GOP colleagues.

I'm sure your buddies John McCain, Lindsey Graham, John Boehner or Eric Canter will GLADLY PAY for the mortgages on your two homes, they'll consider it to be a TAX BREAK FOR THE WEALTHY!!! Oooops, I'm sorry they've already done that for 8 YEARS!!!!

I hope the GOP likes getting a taste of their own medicine.

He is not a La Jollan and even though he owns a 12 million dollar house here he will never ever be seen in public just like McCain all the Politicians want to leave there cold or hot weather states and come to the best weather in the world. Yes La Jolla where we La Jollan's live. Not the useless politicians!!

My definition of ski cabin just greatly expanded. By about 9000 sq. feet. Poor, poor Romney. I am sure he truly can relate to us!

Jeanni   February 17th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Noah, you wrote: "Liberals don't hate rich Americans, they hate rich Republicans." I am a moderate independent though that too you'd probably pigeonhole as "liberal." I'd greatly appreciate if you'd stop telling everyone X, Y and Z as if you are God. How about asking us, talking with us and not to or at us, being in this boat together instead of trying to push others off? Love America or leave it, Noah!

Brad   February 17th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

He's selling his Utah "cabin?" Maybe somebody finally pulled him aside and told him the 2002 Olympics really were going just fine before Mitt came in and "saved" them.

.Am not knocking him, because he is successful this is the America way however how can he understand what the average
American is going through. They can't see beyond their nose.
And it's not that they don't care is that they just don't understand.
James you need to get a life. Because you dont know what people are involve with went you buy a house. Also the REP., only care about their own the rich, for those who make the comment about Dem.,

Romney has to sell his property to pay on the bill for the people that made "bad decisions" and the greedy. The ones that Franks & Co. forced the banks to loan money to and the greedy that saw a chance to make a lot of quick money.

You know the Republican party is toxic when ... Palin bails on NRCC & CPAC   February 17th, 2009 12:34 pm ET

David   February 17th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

Who would question that the Romney's have too much space and need to downsize?

Bob from Kentucky   February 17th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

NYC REPUB   February 17th, 2009 12:29 pm ET

Response to Ellis's comment "Wouldn't surprise me if this was done for political purposes. I bet he's thinking about running again in 2012, and doesn't want to be caught in the same trap that McCain was"

Since when is success and prosperity looked down on in this country. I wish everyone was able to say "I don't know how many houses I own" Some people actually work, and make intelligent decisions for their money instead of begging the government for a life line. Take some responsibility in your life.

People who talk down about the successfull and wealthy in this country are a disgrace.

democrats just wish they had the talent and intelligence to become super rich in the private sector....because they don't have the talent and intelligence to earn it in the private sector, they have to do it via the public sector at the expense of taxpayers.......

Adam from Ohio   February 17th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Ah, yes, the Mittster is downsizing by selling the rustic little 9,500-square-foot cabin. I know that after I moved out of my parents' house, they, as empty nesters, decided it was time to unload the 9,500-square-foot cabin, too. Yep. Too bad Mitt didn't become the president–a man who sells the 9,500-square-foot cabin after the kids move out definitely understands what we little people face every day.

Mike   February 17th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Mitt Romney earned his money??!! Just like the rest of the brilliant business tycoons on wall street? You mean those type of earnings? The kind which some buffoon gives himself a 400 million pat on the back for outsourcing his company to the grave? Yes, Mitt Romney, has sweated for every 100 million he's earned. Yes, the honest sweat of an honest brow.

Please give us a break.

Simplifying from 4 multimillion dollar mansions to two multimillion dollar mansions. That's got to be rough.

James you should share those Limbaugh drugs with everyone. You GOP IDIOTS just don't get it do you???? Romney and the rest of his crew simply don't have a clue about what goes on in the daily lives of the majority of Americans...including you. And guess what??? They don't give a flip about it either.

But people like YOU dig deep to try to find any lame excuse to be critical of PRESIDENT OBAMA, who isn't worth anywhere near what Romney is.

Get off the drugs, back away from Linbaugh the fat, lying waste of skin that he is...and develop a BRAIN!!!

It's really sad that the President's stimulus law will give you a single penny, but you'll benefit from it too along with the rest of us. Now go somewhere and grow the hell up. And while you're at it...STFU.

Jean-Pierre   February 17th, 2009 12:21 pm ET

Anyone wonder why he is attacking President Obama with such political gaucherie? he who couldn't convince his Republican primaries electorate than he can be trusted. Would be naive anyone who would expect such individuals to support a policy that targets the core of Corporate America's greed. That level of grandiose delusions can be sickening at a time when America's working families struggle daily to make ends meet.

1. a small house or cottage, usually of simple design and construction: He was born in a cabin built of rough logs.

I suppose it IS all subjective, maybe its the smallest and most cramped of his... um... homes?

There is no greater indication of the disparity of wealth in this country than the fact that anyone would have the temerity to refer to a 9500 square foot residence as a "cabin."

Harvey, Tampa, FL   February 17th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Yeah, all of a sudden the dream of owning mansions and multiple home is a BAD thing. All of you libs would do it in a heartbeat, but you sure are quick to nail Romney & McCain for their achievements and possessions. And all the while, it's okay for Obama to have his Chicago mansion. KLK, be successful and you can have your mansion too.

Shawn-Tx   February 17th, 2009 12:18 pm ET

Wow, so now I can see why the Republicans are against the "wasteful spending" that is in the stimulus package, they don't need it. McCain has 8 homes nad now Romney w/ 4 or 5 homes that or worth more money than most Americans make in their whole life time. They can't honestly tell me that they would be hiring more Americans to work if Obama cut their taxes. They would just be buying more real estate to keep their only families rich.

JA/TN   February 17th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

It always used to astonish me that Republicans continually referred to Democrats running for office as "elitist". Look at Bush (from about as an elite background as it is possible to find) and McCain (can't even recall how many houses he owns) representing the last 3 Republicans in presidential races. Then we see poor old Mitt having to see his $5 million ski pad.................Staggering hypocrisy.

SPARE US! is he trying to just fit in with the rest of us poor folks out here just trying to hold on to our small and only home?
we are no longer dems and repubs, we are haves, and have nots.
the republican party only seems to understand the "HAVES" and could care less about us unfortunate "HAVE-NOTS".
HE AN MCCAIN ARE TWO PEAS FROM THE SAME POD.

This is not an example of American dream – this is an example of conspicuous consumption that will ruin Americans and the rest of population if we allow this WASTEFUL STUPID way of living.

Gwen, FL   February 17th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

It won't work. He's still a plastic, multi-millionaire who can't relate to most Americans. He will never be president, no matter how many homes he sells.

Take it from me Rom, give it up. We still don't like you.

"How dare he make more than his fellow comrades! He should have to live in the street like the rest of America. Obama's new foreclosure plan should not include any wealthy people, they need to be punished for being successful."

Since "the fundamentals of the economy are strong" I wonder if McCain will keep all eight estates?

Joe   February 17th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

I'm sorry for your loss, Mitt. And to think I only had to give up one meal a day to make it!

we will never be represented by a common man in upper government. Obviously only the welathy can get elected, or those who have already sold their souls to get where they are…

Wealth requires you do special things for those who can make you wealthier.. and the truth is most of us have too much of a conscience to climb the ladder….

I depise what has happened to this country, and I really can't be real proud of it.. we need a regular Joe or Jane to finally represent us workers…

Hans Brecker, Newport RI   February 17th, 2009 12:00 pm ET

Now it's Al Gore's turn to unload his not-so-green mansion and downsize. Hypocrite!!!

marc   February 17th, 2009 11:59 am ET

Many homes, too many cars, over the top excesses, out of touch with the majority! No wonder all republicans want out of a stimulus package are tax cuts. Gross displays of wealth is what is wrong with this world. I have no issues with wealth but with the way the wealth is spent. Wake up people! BTW Romney was a lousy Governor, speaking negatively of the very state he was supposed to be governing while on the road.

Angie   February 17th, 2009 11:59 am ET

"...not an indication the nation's flagging economy has affected the Romney family," says the spokesman?? How nice for them.

Bill S   February 17th, 2009 11:59 am ET

How anyone can describe a 9,500 square foot structure as a cabin boggles the mind.

Kevin   February 17th, 2009 11:57 am ET

Well now, how the mighty have fallen.

Hand tough Mitt   February 17th, 2009 11:56 am ET

If Mitt can only hang on long enough for Obama to come up with his foreclosure aid ......

Andrew   February 17th, 2009 11:55 am ET

Sounds like an average American I can relate to. Romney '12

Andi   February 17th, 2009 11:55 am ET

....ummmmm.....must hold back comment....head may explode.....

KLK   February 17th, 2009 11:55 am ET

I wish I had a mansion to unload.
