Palin received per diem payments even though she was staying in her own home.

(CNN) – Alaska officials have told Gov. Sarah Palin she must pay back taxes on the thousands of dollars she received in state per diem funds while living at her home in Wasilla.

The Washington Post first reported last September that Palin had billed the state for nearly $17,000 worth of meals and other living expenses while staying in her own home during the first 19 months of her administration, even though the official governor’s residence is in Juneau.

The news clouded Palin’s self-styled image as a small government reformer, just weeks after she was tapped as John McCain’s running mate. At the time, Palin’s office said the governor was entitled to the payments.

Alaska administration commissioner Annette Kreitzner told the Anchorage Daily News on Tuesday that the governor’s office had asked the office to review the tax treatment of the per diem payments after questions about the funds were raised.

Kreitzner told the paper that following the review, the per diem payments will be treated as income and that a revised W-2 statement will be sent to the governor.

Palin’s office would not say how much she owes in back taxes, or if she would continue to receive the payments.

UPDATE: Palin spokesman Bill McAllister tells CNN that Palin "will abide by all IRS regulations and rulings and will pay what she owes. That number, though, is not a matter of public record."

People had been asking about the per diem tax issue during the election. If you're given money by an employer, it has to be reported. If Palin had been able to resolve this the minute the questions were asked instead of going on a four month victory lap, then the GOP wouldn't be looking so hypocritical right now.

Well, what do you know....after all the bashing Obama's cabinet picks had to take from the GOP, now it appears one of their annointed ones hasn't paid her taxes either.

Let's have fun watching the GOP spin *this* story!

Palin is a joke! How can she do something like this? She would have gotten away with it if McCain did not tap her for VP. This goes agains all she says she stands for. I hope they remember this when she runs for office.

reggie   February 18th, 2009 12:49 pm ET

PC, why do you think Palin should keep her opions to herself. You cetainly spout out yours every chance you get. I guess others opinions are fine, as long as they are inline with yours....

Will she ever go away! I am so glad she isn't the Governor of my state. What a looser hanging on till the next election. Surely, the Republicans would never consider running her..she is just a breeder with a lot of baggage and no ability to perform at a level this country and the state of Alaska needs. Go AWAY.

Couple of days ago my friend who was in an argument with his girlfriend told her "You are dumber than Palin". I guess now you could say that Palin has really become a household name

Ghost   February 18th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

Garret, are you sure? That doesn't sound right. I believe this was due to her getting the per diem as a travel expense and claiming her kids as well. If what you say is right, then I can see this as a mistake. But I don't think that is the case.

AD   February 18th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

To Sophia:

The purpose of Per Diem is to cover any additional expenses that an employee incurs while LIVING AWAY FROM HOME on business trips.

I think you missed the fact that Gov. Palin was "living at her home in Wasilla." Hence, the per diem is treated as income.

reggie   February 18th, 2009 12:48 pm ET

I'm sure Gov. Palin knows that she has to pay her taxes, unlike Obama's new Sec of Treasury and some of his other cabinets nominees who willingly avoided paying taxes.

Roberto   February 18th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

As anyone with any manangement experience will tell you, you don't pay someone a per diem when they're staying in their own house, eating their own food. If Palin though she could get away with this she is really clueless.

I will buy her excuse of "I'm a Republican, the rules are different for us"!

scottmn   February 18th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Classic Palin doublespeak. Alaska will run her out of the state on a rail too.

Qub   February 18th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

What a loser. I am done making excuses for this hypocritical, under educated "face" of the Republican Party. Go away Palin. I want my Party back! To the person that described the per diem as a "legitimate expenditure" you are a biased fool. It is legit only if the expeses are real and legit. Her living at home was clearly a personal decision. It is called cheating the system..

Sue   February 18th, 2009 12:47 pm ET

Professional liberal blogger alert!
Liberals are still afraid of her and the bashing will continue until the next election. ACORN will be in full swing with all the stimulus money they're getting!
I gotta go. Obama's giving another speech and giving away more of my money to people who are living in houses they shouldn't have bought in the first place.

Flex   February 18th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

I used to hate this woman, and the idea that she might have been our VP, but now I'm developing a soft spot for her. It may have been her daughter's act of throwing a knife into the religious zealots "abstinence only" fascism.

I don't know what the hype is about. S.Palin will be billed more taxes, and she hasn't protested the charges, or said that she will pay them. So, what's the big deal?

I still wouldn't want her in charge of the US. Her religious views have obscured reality for her!

Florida, Florida, Florida   February 18th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

Just another dirty little secret that comes out of the Palin family. Stay tuned I'm sure more will follow.

God, I hope the base gets their wish and puts this disaster at the top of the Republican ticket in 2012, that will spell the end of the GOP!

Mike   February 18th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

Ms. Palin has nothing on Illinois's Blagojevich, who spend all of his 6-plus years as governor living in Chicago while the governor's mansion sat empty in Springfield. Like paying taxes, relocating to the state capitol is now optional for those who we elect.

independent   February 18th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

What is the age limit on VP nominations? Maybe we could nominate Bristol Palin for Vice President.

She can see Russia from her front porch too.

1) She has more time to devote to the job (only one child).
2) She recently stated that Abstinance Programs, while noble, are unrealistic.
3) Though related, she is not married to a member of the Alaskan Independence Party. And,
4) She did not claim per diem while living at home.

Those are four advantages over her mother.

zak666   February 18th, 2009 12:46 pm ET

S.B. Stein E.B. NJ   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Why does she refuse to live in the governor's mansion? Is it really that hard for her family to MOVE? American families do it all the time. Do they like doing it? That I can't answer, but the point is that people move for their job all the time. If she can't do that, then she needs to quit her job and do something from home.

Torin from Georgia   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

There she goes again . . . never taking responsibility for any mistakes or errors of her judgment. Palin is a joke.

Gracie   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Now..... let me get this straight, THE GOP has been running their mouths ALL week long about the stimulus, cabinet appointments, etc.....

AND yet you have....

1. REPUBLICAN CONGRESSMAN ERIC CANTER WHO FORCIBLY PUSHED THE FIRST 600+ BILLION BANK BAIL OUT BECAUSE HIS WIFE'S BANK GOT $200+ BILLION OF THIS MONEY.

2. MAJORITY OF THE REPUBLICAN LEADERSHIP IN WASHINGTON VOTED "NO" ON THE PRESIDENT'S STIMULUS, BUT WILL NOT REFUSE THE BILLIONS GOING TO THEIR STATE FROM THE VERY SAME STIMULUS? ISN'T THAT BEING TWO-FACED?

3. SARAH PALIN DIDN'T PAY HER TAXES?

The GOP is truly the PARTY OF VINDICTIVE BACK-STABBING TWO-FACED TALKING, DO NOTHING biggots!!!

The Nemesing One   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

She paid the taxes for the income reported on her W2. She did nothing wrong. Now they've changed their minds and are issuing new W2s and she will have to file her taxes and pay more. This, like so many of the Palin stories, is a non-story.

Why is this a big deal? Obama has a guy in charge to the IRS who didn't pay his taxes until recently and you can bet if he was not appointed to this position he NEVER would have!! Why is Palin bad for doing what Democrats do? Just because she's a Republican?? I think everyone in Congress, Cabinet positions and the President should all prove they pay their taxes before taking office. I bet there are more politicians out there who haven't paid and we just don't know about it and I'm talking Democrats and Republicans.

Ken in NC   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Well I am not a supporter of Gov. Palin but must defend her in this instance. If her employer did not include the per diem payments as normal income, then she or her accountant had no reason to treat it is income.

John   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

Sophia thinks per diems are legitimate expenditures. And they are. However, they are neatly defined; for example you can deduct for fuel used in commuting on milage in excess of 50 miles one-way. As for living in your own home and eating your own groceries, I think NOT.

It would be appropriate to CONSIDER such things when putting together a tax return, but you'd have to realize this was if-fy. Ms. Palin obviously failed to play it safe, because someone would have, should have, told her this maybe looks like cheating. Maybe ESPECIALLY if you wish to live a public role.

Jeffrey, CO   February 18th, 2009 12:45 pm ET

This is news because she is a republican. If she were a democrat.....it would be the norm.....*Yawn*...........

Ghost   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Sophia, that is not the point. The point is that she was taking her per diem for travel while she was at home. And not only for herself, but for her kids. I'm sorry, but that is beyond not paying taxes. I call that theft, plain and simple. Making her pay taxes on it is giving her a pretty big break that the average Joe would not be able to enjoy.

butterflycrying   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

I understand per Diem, but she CHOSE to live in a private residence when she was given a place to live, therefore she should not be entitled to anything, and should in my opinion have to pay it back. Per Diem is the money that one recieves when work forces them away from home. The Military gets Per Diem for working in Iraq, albiet it is nothing like what she recieved. She was not being forced away from her home,

Revluc   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Joan , Ontario   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

Tom Daschle owed taxes because he drove a car that a friend let him use and because of this he was unable to take the head Health post where everyone said he would have done an exceptional job. Apparently he had excellent qualifications to run this post and would have helped the American people immensely. It seems it is the American people who have lost out. Sarah Palin owes taxes and was told about this last year but has not paid them. Meanwhile it has been reported that many people in her state are starving, living in poverty and seem to have no hope. Yet she criticized the stimulus plan which would have given her state money for much needed help. what is going on? Why is there a double standard for Republicans?

LIZ   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

I cannot stand this woman! anybody that thought she was honest shoulda thought about the over the top cost of her makeover..duh?
she's as crooked as the rest of them! we ALL work to support politicians & government employees, at all levels. We're the "serfs" of this century...wake up people...2 sets of rules..2 groups of people..workers & takers.

B   February 18th, 2009 12:43 pm ET

The issue is that she took the per diem to start with. She lives in a welfare state. Doesn't every Alaskan expect the state government to pay their living expenses?

Bill Jackman   February 18th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

The problem with the per diem issue is what is not being stated. As the Governor, Sarah Palin (even when she is home) is feeding the people that travel with her. These added expenses are what a per diem is meant to cover.
In most companies, when an employee receives a per diem it is not considered taxable income. What is working here is that the purple rage hatred of liberals now needs a new target with the retirement of Goerge Bush. Since Gov Palin is seen as a potential rival in the next election, their rabid-dog hatred will continue to center on her.

Rhiannon   February 18th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

She needs to pay back the whole 17,000. Per diem is only valid if you actually have to travel to your job.

Classy 57   February 18th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

This is not much of a story since Mrs. Palin asked for the amount she would owe on these amounts she received. What is more of a story and one that CNN has refused to delve in is the appointment of our Director of IRS who owed much more and was not about to pay any of it until Obama selected him for the position of IRS Director!!! This is worse than the fox guarding the coop - and anyone who has ever owed the IRS money wonders how this jerk got away without paying the taxes all those years.

bsmith171   February 18th, 2009 12:42 pm ET

tom   February 18th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Any one who understands per diem knows that it is an allowance given to off set cost of lodging, incidentals and meals while working away from home. Surely Palin had to question whether getting paid while at home was an abuse of per diem rules. Why is it so difficult for our so called leaders to stay out of trouble with what many of us consider no-brainer issues?

rich   February 18th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

The issue here is NOT back taxes. Typically per-diem is not taxable income and since that is now changing for her, I can't get upset about back taxes. What I can get upset about is the poor judgement and GREED she has shown by charging the state for the convenience of living at home while in office. Jon Steward once called the Palins GRIFTERS in a comedy skit. He was right.

Seth   February 18th, 2009 12:41 pm ET

Perhaps Obama will be looking at her for a cabinet position now?

I think we as a nation should put our foot down on politicians and let them know that we no longer tolerate their dishonesty. We the people out nnumber them. Apaartheid eventually came to an end in South Africa because the people out numbered the government. I don't know this is any longer the best country in the world. Our freedoms are slowly taken away, anyone can listen in on you, jobs going to other countries and what is left is that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

“The amount of taxes owed is a private matter,” Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow told the paper.

How could that possibly be correct? The per diems came from taxpayers' money. How could the amount owed be private information???

As the right has howled about Geithner and Daschle, where does Palin fit into their argument?

Chris   February 18th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

I actually really do despise her BUT the article is not about pathetic Palin not paying her taxes. If you read it correctly, it is saying that she had additional income and now she has to pay taxes on that additional income. Since the additional income was "earned" last year, I assume that is what is considered back taxes.

John Patterson   February 18th, 2009 12:38 pm ET

Bristol Palin is by far smarter than her own mother. She said just about the smartest thing I have ever heard a republican say other than Ron Paul saying Isreal is the most destructive lobbying force on the American government. For her realization that abstinence only is complete religious nonsense she should run for president in 2012 shes hot shes milf shes everything America needs.

Garrett   February 18th, 2009 12:37 pm ET

Her per diem expense was paid because she commuted from her home to the capital, instead of living full time in the executive residence. As such she was entitled by state law to receive such a per diem living expense which would have to be included in any income tax filing. But from the article it sounds like this wasn't included on the governor's W-2 issued from her employer, in this case the state of Alaska. So it really is the fault of the state agency that manages her salary and tax status. Should she have caught the mistake, arguably, but I doubt many of the people raising their eyebrows at this are capable at tax accounting.

And we wonder why we only have low-life phonies like John McCain, Nancy Pelosi, and Barack Hussein Obama in positions of power. It's because when genuine, sincere politicians DO come along, the "Washington machine" and the "media machine" puts their character and reputation through a MEAT GRINDER. This is why THERE WILL NEVER BE REAL CHANGE IN AMERICA.........not by conventional means anyway.

Why even bother with this type of news on a tax on $17,000 when there may be some legitimate deductions after a tax attorney reviews it? . Palin is not a wealthy woman, but one targeted by the press and the democrats since apparently she is a threat to them. Thank God someone is standing up to the Obimbo and his cult of worshipers. This country is in big trouble! When the stimulus package is not enough because it is payoff money for the election and adds to the democratic control and when they keeping asking for more money and your dollar declines in value... when you are part of the so called great medical plan and cannot get to the specialist you need to help you or you are judged too old to have the procedure, when the illegal immigrants swamp the system like they are in California and other cities...maybe the people will wake up and educate themselves on what is really going on here. When the have nots equal the haves the scales will send this country sliding to socialism and total control of everything you do...that is big government for you and that is the CHANGE you bought into.

Sarah Palin didn't pay her taxes? I guess that means she is qualified for a position in Obama's administration.

Gary   February 18th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

Interesting article...everyone should have to pay taxes Republicans and Democrats. The interesting thing to me was that I was under the impression that Alaska didn't have a state income tax, but I guess I must be mistaken. Maybe Secretary of Treasurer Gietnar, Dashle, Charlie Rangel and Governor Palin can all hold one joint press conference and apologize together. Now that would be Bipartisan!

Brian   February 18th, 2009 12:36 pm ET

You people are ridiculous.... the employer was at fault here, for not reporting it on the W-2's as is required. Her tax returns were filed properly based upon the W-2's provided her by the State. Perhaps you guys should actually try READING the article, instead of erecting strawman after strawman.

This has been hashed out repeatedly... all of her per diems were properly documented. The w-2's were not properly prepared. The governor requested the inquiry.

All this shows is that Governor Palin is one of the few honest politicians remaining in America, from either side of the aisle. Unfortunately, by making sure she is compliant with the IRS, this thoroughly disqualifies her from accepting a position in President Obama's cabinet.

Pamalah, Forest Knolls, CA   February 18th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

"Where's Sarah"? That was the button some Alaska State legislators were wearing prior to her VP nomination. The media treated her with kid gloves. The dems should have worn that button also.

When she comes back in 2012, she's going to be all bluster again.

HAHAHA... It never ends with this woman.

Paul   February 18th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

Good god almighty you CNN people are stupid. Read it again, this is not a failure on Palin's part it's a mistake on the part of the state ... that's why they're issuing a revised W2 form.

The original complaint was that she wasn't entitled to the payments in the first place and the determination was that she WAS but that there should have been taxes withheld by state as it was income.

It was Sarah Palin herself who as asked for the review...

"the governor’s office had asked the office to review the tax treatment of the per diem payments after questions about the funds were raised."

Sarah Palin paid her taxes but as an employee of the State of Alaska they failed to properly classify the per diems and withhold accordingly.

It's no wonder you dopes voted for the commie, you're a bunch of illiterates with no reading comprehension skills.

Dave V   February 18th, 2009 12:35 pm ET

What a great job! Get paid to stay at home and surf the net and help out with a baby or two. In between, you look at CNN or Fox and devise ways to stay in the news, good or bad.

Any publicity is good publicity. Gee, they tax your unemployment insurance money, but you didn't think you owed any on that per diem stuff? You gotta be kidding me....

former CA resident   February 18th, 2009 12:33 pm ET

How about we lower the rhetoric folks? Facts are Palin lived in her home rather than Juneau (300 or more miles away) for a part of the time as governor; she received per diem – same as if she had been living in an apt in Juneau while governor's residence was closed for fixup; these monies were not included as taxable on her W-2. She filed returns based on what was on W-2. When questions were raised about tax treatment of the per diem, she asked the RESPONSIBLE Alaska governmental authority to evaluate and make a ruling/recommendation. The recommendation has come in that it was taxable and that the W-2 she was given was in error; the result is she is paying the taxes based on the revised W-2. End of story. Instead of trying to bash someone for sport, why don't we stick to the simple facts of the matter?

With Alaska in financial trouble it doesn't look good that Palin was expecting tax relief for that amount for 19 months. There is a governors residence established for the first family to live in. If they choose not to then it's on their bill not on the tax payers.

I don't understand her at all.

Sophia   February 18th, 2009 12:31 pm ET

Per diem is a legitimate expenditure. According to this article it was decided AFTER THE FACT that it would be treated as income. If you've ever had business expenses to report, you would know how per diem works. Get a life people! You've got enough skeletons in your Dems' closets to keep you busy from now to eternity.

I agree with Colin, RI.... Every potential addition to President Obama's cabinet is being held under the microscope where 'back taxes' are concerned. Fair enough. But it looks like we would have had a few issues if the 'other side won too (shudder.... ). Of course most of us knew that, right?

Carl Justus   February 18th, 2009 12:28 pm ET

I would guess that she expects a great big tax cut and wanted to save the state of Alaska the trouble of having to send back a check and save the postage along with the cost of having to gather all the information concerning the rebate.

That is what the republicans live for is to cut taxes for themselves and the richest of the land so the middle class will have less to support some one to run for office that is willing to lay their party on the line by paying for what they order instead of borrowing 1.90 BILLION DOLLARS A DAY TO SUPPORT MASSIVE TAX CUTS FOR THE RICHEST.

Why is Mitt Romney selling a few of his houses??? tax problems??? Pay your taxes as well Republican senators. They need to investigate John Boehner. He is always complaining.

BTW, the same news was received by many Alaskan state empoyees and even the former mayor of Anchorage, now Senator Begich. But for some this will always only be about Sarah Palin, right?

Buzzy Bobby   February 18th, 2009 12:27 pm ET

“The amount of taxes owed is a private matter,” Palin spokeswoman said. Really??? Since when is the amount of taxes owed by a person in the US government a 'private matter'? Does this only apply to Palin because she's so darn special?

slkwly   February 18th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

HHHmmmm....first, Joe the-not-really-a-plumber-or business owner-turned war-correspondent is found to owe back taxes, and now the person who could've been the VP ,owes back taxes on money she collected while living in her own home instead of the governors mansion like she is supposed to.....wow....the hypocrisy is definitely in both parties, but as soon as one party starts criticizing the other, more 'bones' start coming out of their closets...too funny.

Oh, and this will only be a by-line on Fox (Faux) News, if at all......

keeth in california   February 18th, 2009 12:26 pm ET

Nathan   February 18th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

As a conservative, Gov. Palin needs to get out of national politics. Whatever credibility she may have had is gone after the primary and now this. She will never save the Republican Party, as some people seem to be hoping. Make way for Mitt in 2012.

ATR   February 18th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

The point is not that she didn't pay taxes she owed, I'll conceed it was probably an innocent error. The point is that when Geitner and Dashle made similar mistakes the republicans were alleging they are "tax cheats." So I guess that makes Palin a tax cheat by republican standards. Live by the sword, die by the sword, as they say.

Jerry Harris   February 18th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

Her collecting per diem while living in her own house would be like most people going to work and when they go home in the evening charging their company for living in their own house. Someone needs to tell Moose Palin that she can't have it both ways. If things continue that way up in Alaska they will be put in the same catagory as Illinois. Moose Palin and Blogvich should team up and run on the same ticket, they may not win but you could bet they would have the biggest ego's.

AMERICA- we did the right thing.

James   February 18th, 2009 12:25 pm ET

From the article: "Alaska administration commissioner Annette Kreitzner told the Anchorage Daily News on Tuesday that the governor’s office had asked the office to review the tax treatment of the per diem payments after questions about the funds were raised.

Kreitzner told the paper that following the review, the per diem payments will be treated as income and that a revised W-2 statement will be sent to the governor."

So, at the time they were paying her no one concidered the payments to be income. So, no tax was due. Now, upon further review, the payments are concidered income so she will pay the taxes. What is the problem?

Daschle's case is different because he knew his driver and car was taxable. He just chose not to tell his accountant about it.

hrh   February 18th, 2009 12:24 pm ET

" the governor’s office had asked the office to review the tax treatment of the per diem payments after questions about the funds were raised."

There's the lede for your article, CNN. But thanks again for proving your incredible bias.

Governor Palin ASKED FOR this review because she saw that Alaska's tax code for elected officials might have problems.

And, lo and behold, problems were found. So now she's making it right.

Certainly not the way CNN, the Clinton (third term) News Network is reporting it.

How many times will the public hear about American govt officials of both parties not paying their taxes? Or corporate bums receiving bailouts and then giving themselves bonuses? And, still wonder why America is in financial troubles? How do Americans expect their country to remain strong when everyone tries to avoid taxes? Pay your share, people, and get out of debt. Otherwise, it will get worse.

This is a completely different situation. This went through a review, a decision was rendered, and she will pay. This is completely different from Daschle, and Geitner, as she REQUESTED through her office that this be reviewed, to make sure she was doing things correctly, unlike the others who were looking to hide.

However, it is alarming how many public officials are not paying taxes.

Also, did you know that the new stimulus package has a congressional payraise in it?

It would appear that one of the quickest ways to reduce the size of government would be to expel from office all the elected officials who just can't seem to figure out how much income tax to pay. In the true spirit of bi-partisanship, it appears that the affliction applies equally to the Democrats and the Limbaughs.

Palin didn't pay her taxes? Why wasn't she named to Obama's cabinet?!

In all seriousness, I still cannot fathom that we have a president who appointed a tax dodger to be Treasury Secretary and a Senate who approved his nomination. I hope millions of Americans "forget" to pay their taxes this year in proper protest.

Sue   February 18th, 2009 12:21 pm ET

While the not paying taxes part is bad....I think its wors that she accepted $60 per day per diem tolive in her own house in Wasilla. She choses not to stay in Juneau. Other state officials have refused the per diem when staying in their own homes by their own choice. She is not for Alaska...only for herself!

Big Deal. So, she has an issue with per diem taxes and she has been asked to pay them. These are disputes that come up frequently when one receives per diem money. In many situations, one is allowed to collect lodging, food and mileage even though you are living at home, eating your own food and going nowhere. it's like wages for using your own money while in their employ.
Meanwhile, Mc Cain says he won't go on the View again. One of those women on the View said after the interview with McCain, that it was their job to make sure he wasn't elected. Why doesn't CNN report this little bit of info, that is the best reason why he wouldn't give them the time of day.

DC-African, Colorado   February 18th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

What? That's crazy...

Jon in CA   February 18th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Holy Bat-tax! If Obama had known THIS he'd have nominated her for Commerce Secretary!

Quickest way in getting an Obama nomination? Don't pay your taxes.

Quickest way to get "Obama Stimulus Money"? Don't pay your mortgage.

Sniffit   February 18th, 2009 12:17 pm ET

Where are all the GOPers who lambasted Daschle and Geithner? Shouldn't they be even angrier that one of their own "chosen" has embarassed their party???

....chirp chirp.....

Jeffrey   February 18th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Why aren't Sean ins-Hannity and Rush Limbaugh crying "Off With Her Head!"?

Because apparently its different if its a Republican not paying taxes? That would have been interesting had McCain won the election. Would there be public outcry for her to step aside, like Daschle and Geithner?

Sniffit   February 18th, 2009 12:16 pm ET

Wait...where are all the self-righteous GOPers who lambasted Daschle and Geithner? Shouldn't they be even angrier that one of their own "chosen" has embarassed their party???

Nice to see it not only the Dems that don't pay their taxes. Wonder if anyone will have the guts to point that out to any GOP big wigs.

Robert, Charleston SC   February 18th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Why are past per diem payments private? The payments were taken while she was in office (the first 19 months according to the article).

It seems to me all the money a public officer makes should be a matter of public record.

The fact that she billed Alaska to live in her own home sounds criminal.

Patrick - Indianapolis   February 18th, 2009 12:14 pm ET

Well this is a fine example that it really doesn't matter what party you choose. A whole bunch of politicians don't pay taxes. When is mandatory auditing of public officials going to start being demanded by the public? I know the corrupt officials are the ones who have to pass the thing so maybe we should let them all know their jobs are on the line.

This isn't a party problem, its a politician problem. End career politicians and begin mandatory auditing!

Also, throw the corrupt politicians in jail for a long, long time.

NEWS BULLETIN....

Dateline SC, KY, TN, AL, WVA, MS, TX

Congressional leaders of the new Hooverite Repuglicon Party said today that it plans to call the economic stimulus ARRA billed signed yesterday by Pres. Obama a failure on Friday because the US economy has not immediately recovered.
The GOP party faithful around the country were gleeful since, like the middle class, they want all Democrat led initiatives to fail.
GOP leaders vehemently denied that the GOP’s new obstructionist position as the party of “NO!” was the reason for the planned announcement and cited “not enough tax cuts for the top 5%” as the reason the planned failed.
No alternative suggestions for recovery are to be proposed in keeping with the GOP’s new policy of doing nothing...

Matt   February 18th, 2009 12:12 pm ET

So lets graps this she flys her family around on Alaska ticket bills them for staying home. She is no better than a CEO of a major bank. I guess this is the media picking on poor Sarah again. She has ethical problems and this falls right in line. Her husband was found along with her buddies in contempt. A senator from her state was convicted! The state is so wrought with crooks do we really want her anywhere near the White House.

Alfred E. Neumann   February 18th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

Still amazing – CNN parachuted investigators into Alaska moments after Palin was selected as the conservative VP nominee.

Yet the CDs on Jeremiah Wright were never revealed until after Super Tuesday.

CNN is as far to the left in bias as Fox News is to the right. Fair and balanced is a meaningless slogan to both of these outlets.

(MSNBC – who cares)

Florida Dude   February 18th, 2009 12:11 pm ET

All politicians should bay their taxes whether they are Democrats or Republicans, but the drama following this woman is unyielding. So very glad she is no where near the White House. For those who think the American people will be duped in 2012 by her, think again.

I thought her mother, Sara's mother, stated that Sara wore big clothing and that is why no one could tell if she was pregnant doing the time she supposely was inpregnantive with her youngest child.

There is still alot we don't know about this lady who think she smart enough to be president of the USA.

CNN please post because we want answers.

TallyGirl   February 18th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

I would love to receive $894 per month for meals and incidentals in my own home on top of a 6 figure salary. That's 20% more than our family of five currently spends at the grocery store each month. I guess you have to be a fiscal conservative like Palin to get perks like that.

S.M   February 18th, 2009 12:09 pm ET

The so called Maverick billed the taxpayers for her personal expenses while living at her own home and she had the nerve to trash Obama and put herself up on a pedal stoole? Crook!

Good, she's a sneak and a cheat. The face of the Republican Party needs a facelift.

I would love to receive $894 per month for meals and incidentals in my own home on top of a 6 figure salary. That's 20% more than our family of five currently spends at the grocery store each month.

Karen   February 18th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

What nerve. Gov Palin saves the state probably tons of money living in her own home instead of the Governor's mansion and they penalize her for it. This is just like a small town. Pick someone and target them for every dirty trick you can find. That is shameless. Someone starts to make it big and every loser that can't make it on their own comes out of the woodwork and attacks her trying to make a name for themselves. Palin is being punished for saving Alaska $$.

Karen   February 18th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

What about the per deim her family received? Should they have received payments if they were staying in their own home?

Nadine   February 18th, 2009 12:07 pm ET

Palin owes back taxes. Wow. I hope she pays them or this would not fit her small government reformer image.

JOHN   February 18th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

I'm not surprised. I still don't understand how Palin was selected as the poster child for the right wing conservatives in the Republican party. Family values certainly are not her strong suit, there were questions about favoritism when they built a house that did not conform to local laws, more problems with firing a police official for personal reasons, misuse of public funds/back taxes, so what is next?

And she has plans to run for president in the future! Something is certainly rotten up there and it's not the cheese!

boered1   February 18th, 2009 12:06 pm ET

why is this not splattered all over the news!! McCain picked as his RUNNING MATE someone who did not pay thier taxes and lied about having to pay them, and McCain and the rest of the radical religious rightwing republicans complain about PRESIDENT Obama's vetting process? McCain blew it on potentially the nations #2 leader where as President Obama blew it on a couple of lower level people who ARE NOT in line for the Presidency. Do you think this will be covered on faux News (or CNN for that matter beyond this?) if so I bet it will be covered as an "Attack" on poor Sarah Palin....
idiots

So Sarah is a tax cheat too! lol

ECM   February 18th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Why is it a private matter when others are being exposed for not paying their taxes – if it was me the IRS would be pulling me into court playing hard ball – appears to be another double standard

SGJ   February 18th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

Wow – I guess the true colors of all her reform are coming out now....

Typical republican.. I really hope shes around in 2012.

Veteran in Kansas   February 18th, 2009 12:05 pm ET

This is a no braner, what in the world was she thinking. She would be entitiled to moving expenses and per diem during the move, maybe, depending on how the Alaskan rules are written for a new governor moving in, but not for 19 months.

Amount of taxes owed a private individual might fall into a private matter, but taxes owed on a senior governmental official, appointed, elected, promoted as we have so amply wittnessed over the years are far from a private matter.

Mike in Columbus   February 18th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Where's all the reform we heard so much about? Maverick this, and outsider that... hmmmm... Guess not...

James, Ho. TX   February 18th, 2009 12:04 pm ET

Palin does not qualify for "Sect. of Commerce" ! ech, Back Taxes, etc.

Kona Kim   February 18th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Once again, Palin demostrates that she is a hypocrite. She is not a reformer and has no business in national politics. She takes money from her state for per diem while she is living at home?? It sounds like she broke the law, not to mention not reporting the income on her taxes. After all of this is revealed, I bet she will have a hard time even getting re-elected as governor of AK. NO MORE "C" STUDENTS, please! She knows nothing, she needs to fade away.

ben   February 18th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Oops!

This is great Headline for FOX News after the interview with Bristol Palin.

When will our elected officials learn to respect the law?

Shari, NY   February 18th, 2009 12:03 pm ET

Palin and her family seem to be in CNN news every day. Of all the storeis I have read this one truly deserves ticker status. The fact that the amount of taxes owed is a "private matter" leaves one to imagine the magnitude.

Tulsa L   February 18th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

Well well, whats good for the Goose is good for the Gander.........she must pay her taxes just like the rest of us.......I hope they will follow up to make sure she did..........when my husband goes on the road for a company to do work out of state or in state, he is paid per diem and that covers the cost of his hotel room and meals ..........Palin was staying in her own home eating her own food, why should she be getting per diem? Now maybe gas mileage to drive back and forth OK, but not per diem............talk about how Democrats like to spend, well what do you think Palin is making her own State Government do..........these politicans all think that they desever all these special amminities...........they DON'T

I Am Repub   February 18th, 2009 12:02 pm ET

She avoids the spotlight and hates to be the center of attention.

This is just plain cruel.

JPM   February 18th, 2009 12:01 pm ET

Okay – now I expect Republican outrage at McCain for not "vetting" Palin properly...start calling McCain unprepared to take office, question is abilities...and everybody should demonize Palin for not paying taxes and having the gall to run for office – whats good for Democrats is good for Republicans right?

Now why do I not think CNN is at it again to smear the Republicans and sepsecially Sarah Palin. God forbid she must be very dangerous to CNN and the Dems. Why doesn't CNN look deeper into the garbage can and find something else to tattle about. Sarah Palin should no more have to pay taxes that thet fellow that Obama chose and he dodged taxs for years. Is that how the government is going to refill theer coffers so thay can go on vacation spas?

Alicia   February 18th, 2009 11:56 am ET

BRAVO CNN. You are reporting that all individuals can have tax issues. You are reporting that no matter what party someone is in, they may have problems. I find it refreshing that I can read that stuff happens and does not mean the party the person is affiliated with is bad. Kind of like you parent 2 children and 1 goes bad.

I loved the article on the Indians in Alaska that are barely getting by, while Governor Palin is symbolic of our now economic crisis. The Wall Street and connected politicians with money, like McCain, Romney and Paulsen enjoy excess while the rest of us suffer.

Alaska must be fedup by now.

California Gold   February 18th, 2009 11:56 am ET

The United States of America doesn't ask much of her citizens: She asks that you obey her laws and pay taxes. Jury duty would be nice. Even military service is not required. Why is that so freakin' hard for a politician to accomplish? When she ripped into Joe Biden for saying paying taxes is "patriotic," did she even stop to think she was ripping off the country she professes to love? I just don't get it. Really.

This should be taxable, but it also should be criminal.

No surprise this, that she owes back taxes and I am quite sure she will turn the payment of said taxes into a protracted public spectacle, what with being the attention junkie that she is.

Why do some politicians think they are above the law? How many other politicians have not paid their taxes?

Now it's Mooseburger Palin's turn to not pay taxes! Who does she think she is. Maybe she thinks she is the queen? And how do the IRS and the state taxing authorities miss these things. They have never missed my taxes.I always make sure the tax forms are in promptly!!

There needs to be some sort of penalty for those who "FORGET" or "DON'T KNOW" and either under pay or don't pay at all. All these politicians have access to the help they need,

There is no excuse for ANY politician to not take care of their duty to pay their taxes. Every body else does their taxes or has it done and without excuses. Palin should be ashamed for this, but no doubt isn't! The voters will have their say...

Sarah Palin, this is not a private matter if you are in and want to run for public office. Do yourself a favor if you want any future public positions. How did McCann not see all this before tapping her to be his running mate?

Roy   February 18th, 2009 11:47 am ET

This just reiterates that Sarah Palin thinks her family, her views, her politics, and her life are above reproach, and that the REST OF US who don't love her are part of some (ask Ashley Judd) extremeist fringe group. Sarah KNEW it must be wrong to bill the state for meals while you are sitting at home.....keeping an eye on Russia out the window.

Tom   February 18th, 2009 11:46 am ET

Oh, now it's a private matter, but if it were a Democrat it would be public. I can only imagine how Fox News is going to spin this.

Okay Republicans, time to speak out loudly, as you never fail to do when it is a Democratic official with a personal tax issue. Let's hear your criticisms of the Governor.

Good! I hope they also get her to pay for hauling her brood around on trips involving government business, like in New York City! Sarah Palin KNOWS how to beat the system!

Sarah... just keep on sending Alaskans their oil revenue checks and you will still be the most popular president in the country! Money talks, right??? Then hit the Federal Government up for infrastructure money! Alaska gets more than any other state in the country!

Oops. Another tax gotcha stings yet another political hopeful. Does this mean that she can never run for president? It should, because if those running the government cannot figure out the tax code, how can the rest of us be expected to comprehend it.

America   February 18th, 2009 11:44 am ET

Yes she should and so should all the other senators past and present. I think they should audit every single one of them just as they would the "common" people. Lead by example for once.

Well, this joke (Palin) keep getting funnier every day. This pathetic fraud is intent on stretching her 15 minutes of fame as long as possible. She needs to go away. The whole family is becoming a joke. I’ll bet the RNC is cursing that old fool McCain for unearthing this vermin.

Another bad media gotcha, wink-wink, problem?

Rob   February 18th, 2009 11:43 am ET

Let's hear the outrage from the conservatives when it is one of their own failing to pay taxes. Let's hear some criticism concerning the fact that she let taxpayers pay her mortgage and food expenses. Seems like a major ethics breach to me.

joe   February 18th, 2009 11:42 am ET

This woman is full of crap!

DWH   February 18th, 2009 11:42 am ET

I wish someone would pay me to eat meals in my own home. I bet the Alaskan people are proud of that.

Paul DObro   February 18th, 2009 11:42 am ET

How do people claim she is a brilliant politician when she continued to take the per diem as late as Decemeber 2008? You make $150,000 a year, claim you are a reformer who wants to get rid of government waste, yet you take chump change for living in your own house for over 300 days in the first 18 months of your tenure?

Does she get any money for all the defenese of Rush/Glenn/Shaun?

SOUTHERN HOTTIE   February 18th, 2009 11:41 am ET

you betcha, there too, also. . .

uggggggggggg!

so what? who cares?

Hardy Takhar   February 18th, 2009 11:41 am ET

The more this bimbo talks the wider the closet opens and the skeletons of her suspect past keep falling out in front of CNN. She needs to go away as her day on center stage has long gone. Go hunting wolves or moos or bears you foolish idiot

kevin   February 18th, 2009 11:40 am ET

What you mean that there is a Rethugican the did not pay their taxes, especially when that all have to talk about. Now, Miss Crazy Lady have not paid her taxes in a state that she is the executive of. Instead of seeing Russia from her house maybe she should be looking for the IRS. Now, we should keep looking into the politican taxes because none of the politican walk on water and they all for short.

Susan   February 18th, 2009 11:40 am ET

Now she qualifies to be in Obama's cabinet.

Jean   February 18th, 2009 11:40 am ET

The Governor asked for the review. How many government officials do that?

NO MENTION THAT THE Governor turned down a $25,000.00 pay increase.

We are living in tough times and Politicians should not be getting pay increases.

No mention that back in January Congress received a pay increase without a vote.

George the Democrat Obama fanatic.   February 18th, 2009 11:40 am ET

What is worse than the sec of treasury not paying their taxes. the vice president. thank goodness she is not in office

Leviticus   February 18th, 2009 11:39 am ET

Massive surprise there.

Cathy   February 18th, 2009 11:39 am ET

Two -faced hypocrite and low -life creepy rat ....She should pay the money back , the people thieving governor.

the idiot   February 18th, 2009 11:39 am ET

Sounds like she could be eligible for the Obama cabinet or at least some sort of position with the democratic party in Illinois.

Tony   February 18th, 2009 11:39 am ET

Sarah,

All you have to do is say you used Turbo Tax and sorry and all will be forgiven. It worked for Geithner – why not?

Remember we have the change that was voted for. I would like to see the Dems jump on this and show just how hypocritical they are........

umu ule   February 18th, 2009 11:38 am ET

She even owe taxes too. And Mccain wanted her to be second in command. It's ridiculous.

jfs Memhis, Tn   February 18th, 2009 11:38 am ET

WHOOPS !!! But that is okay.......correct Right Wingers ?? After all the crap you have been blogging about the same issues with Obama's cabinet selection ..... this one is okay, right??? Just like it was OKAY to spend a trillion Dollars in Iraq UNCHECKED.......but it is socialism spending 780 billion dollars in YOUR OWN COUNTRY ???? One word comes to this moderate Republican's mind...Hypicrite.

Al, NY NY   February 18th, 2009 11:38 am ET

Oops by golly. Real Americans pay their taxes don't they Sarah?

Hilda   February 18th, 2009 11:37 am ET

HA! We all have to pay taxes .

Jonathan   February 18th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Oh my goodness!
Can it really be true that Sarah Palin isnt the down home, every woman, with the cute little mannerisms that we all love?
Can it be true that she is yet another corrupt politician?
Say it aint so!

Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha!   February 18th, 2009 11:37 am ET

First Joe the Plumber, and now Palin. Okay, all you who so gleefully vilified Obama and his nominees for tax issues, lets hear it from you now.

Carlos   February 18th, 2009 11:37 am ET

Oh God make her go away...

Phil in SA   February 18th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Oh, this is just sweet. Saying "Palin" and "back taxes" in the same sentence....what a joke she is.

Craig   February 18th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Maverick hahahahahahahha.

Sam   February 18th, 2009 11:36 am ET

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise!

American dodged a bullet on this one.

texasgreenacres   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

to be a politician you have to be a smart crook.and smart wasn't one of her greater assets.but she is supposed to say( thanks but no thanks.)to which one i don't know. The paying of the taxes, or not to pay the taxes that will be the question. Most likely she will say I'll give it all back in payments in the next 100 years or so?

bobbygo   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Hummmm! Now lets see.................didn't I just read in the last few weeks that the Democrats had a problem with paying their taxes? Wonder what Hannity will have to say about this? No problem, I'm sure he will defend her and his former drug addict friend Limbaugh will follow. I think all government officials should have their tax returns audited. ALL of them.

ANGIE-OH   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Well, now it's this special. sarah "the pitbull in lipstick" palin has to pay some back taxes. she is truely being exposed as a BIG fraud. her holier then thou attitude is a joke. the list is getting longer and longer. she is a liar, she pals around with drug dealers, her husband is a thug, daughter dropped out of high school (along with baby daddy). And this is what the repubs think is so great. on top of all this she is dumb as a stump. the repubs are a big joke. LOL!

Once you vote Black   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

What a crook. And why would she want to live in a double wide in wasilla when she has a governers mansion in juno? I am so disappointed in her. $17,000 worth of meals! How can she think that is ok? She thought nobody was looking thats what it is. I am so hurt by this. I really wanted her to be our next President. The GOP is done! I wish I could express how upset with her I am.

David Newport, OR   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

Plus interest. Wonder what took them so long? This was a no-brainer...oh that explains it all.

boered1   February 18th, 2009 11:35 am ET

WHAT A REPUBLICAN DODGING TAXES WHERE IS THE OUTCRY ON FAUX NEWS!

I suspect that this will not even be covered by the MSM as they have decided tha the idiot Caribu Barbie can do no wrong as shown during her VP run where she blatantly lied about President Obama, stirred up racial hatred, and said that if you were not a reedneck oyu were not part of America and the MSM barely acknowledged it but spent over a month showing scenes for Rev. Wright BEFORE President Obama joined his church because you see a black amn is tresponsible for everything any other person he associates with but a white woman is just so much in need of protection.

Gerda Edwards   February 18th, 2009 11:34 am ET

In 5....4....3....2....1....let the obsessed Gov Palin haters begin.

(You know, the people who whine about Gov Palin being in the news, but then add to it by blogging.)

Joe in Austin   February 18th, 2009 11:34 am ET

Personal tax returns of politicians isn't a private matter, and everybody knows that per diem payments are taxable.

nora california   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Well, seems that everyone including the godly republicans can make mistakes on their taxes. Where is the cry for her to resign?

Gloria   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

So each day we learn more about the REAL Sarah Palin....

Nate Hussein   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

One question...what happened to the funds for "The bridge to nowhere"?

jesse contreras   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

just leave her alone almost everybody owes taxes even the fed govt owes money we are in debt

PATC   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Question if she has to pay income tax on per diem when in Wasilla does that mean she does not have to when at the Governors Mansion doing business? Read the law you only have one work place.

nora california   February 18th, 2009 11:33 am ET

Well, seems that everyone including the godly republicans can make mistakes on their taxes. Where is the cry for her to resign.

Ed, Santa Fe, NM   February 18th, 2009 11:32 am ET

TOLD YOU SO!

Now they need to go after Palin for revising state paperwork to include her kids as "conference attendees" so their travel and stays at fancy hotels would be deductible. WRONG!

Palin is a boob!

glacierdawg   February 18th, 2009 11:32 am ET

must be really nice to collect per diem while sleeping in your own bed.... such a sham!

Michael "C" Lorton, VIrginia   February 18th, 2009 11:32 am ET

The "owning of back taxes syndrome" seems to be spreading-–even in the frontier wilderness....

Obama Victim   February 18th, 2009 11:32 am ET

does this mean that Sarah will get a spot in The Messiah's cabinet??

califvote   February 18th, 2009 11:31 am ET

haha.. .where are the repubs now?

Sarie Palin   February 18th, 2009 11:31 am ET

I am entitled to some freebies!!! I am Sarie!

PATC   February 18th, 2009 11:31 am ET

ALso note they will send her a revised W2. Seems like the office was unclear on the Federal tax code to begin with. More proof that we need to get rid of the IRS and go to the Fairtax.

dishonest politicans   February 18th, 2009 11:31 am ET

she is a governor, there's nothing private about her life, she knew this when she went into politics, if she owes the taxes, she should be thrown out with the rest of the lying, cheats that seem to be surfing in AMERICA , and the purchase of the sun-tanning bed that she bought during the campaign, DID THE TAXPAYERS PAY FOR THAT, just wondered?

Andy J, Upstate NY   February 18th, 2009 11:31 am ET

love the way CNN titles the article.

It could also have been titled " Palin initiates inquiry regarding taxes she may owe... and she wasn't even trying to get a top stop in the Obama administration!!!"

T   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Well there is always a dark side.....what goes around comes around.
There is more to come about Palin................No it's not a private matter. She scream about President Obama now she gets a turn.
hahaha.

chuck   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

WHAT ELSE IS SHE DOING TO BANKRUPT THE STATE'S FINANCIAL SYSTEM. IS THIS A REFORMER? SARAH PALIN HAS PROVEN THAT SHE IS NOT A CONSREVATIVE REPUBLICAN AS MANY THINK SHE IS MORE A LIBERAL REPUBLICAN AND A CROOK LOOKING OUT FOR HERSELF AND NOTHING ELSE. COULD YOU IMAGINE WHAT SHE WOULD HAVE DONE WITH THE OTHER NUT-HEAD IF THEY WERE ELECTED? THE FEDS NEED TO KEEP A CLOSE WATCH AT THIS WOMAN.

Morgan, Colorado   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

Tax problems are everywhere these days.

Andi   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

taxes owed a private matter? Not in politics, my deary

Andy J, Upstate NY   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

thus far, this is the only thing i don't really like about Sarah.

At least she is initiating the inquiry regarding the status of her taxes on her own and not only paying her taxes because she wants a top stop in the Obama administration.

karen-Phoenix   February 18th, 2009 11:30 am ET

And the republicans were all over Dashelle for $1,100? This should be the end of the republican party!!!

Paul, Riverside, CA   February 18th, 2009 11:29 am ET

GOP = FAIL!!!

Sarah Palin = EPIC FAIL!!!

Sniffit   February 18th, 2009 11:29 am ET

Awwwww...poor GOPers...I guess you'll have to forgoe nominating her in 2012 so you don't label yourself hypocrites with respect to Daschle and Geithner. I'm actually disappointed. 2012 was fixing to be one heck of a hilarious year...

james   February 18th, 2009 11:29 am ET

“The amount of taxes owed is a private matter,” -hmmm. Too bad Gietner and Daschle didn't think of this arguement.

CATINA   February 18th, 2009 11:29 am ET

I LIKE THAT SARAH PALIN ASK HER TO LOOK INTO IT BEFORE SHE GET READY TO RUN FOR ANYTHING.THE MEDIA WILL PLUMMEL HER IF IT CAME UP IN AN ELECTION. SO GOOD JOB.

joseph   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Maybe if all these politicians paid their taxes, we wouldn't be in this financial mess we're in.

ERNIE   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

What a mess, one after another, no wonder we have the
problems in this country.

Ghost   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Ha! It was beyond shady that she was taking that per diem while sitting at home anyway. That is not a mistake, that is trying to beat the system. Another example of shady politics. I wonder if Alaskans will be looking to bring her back in the next election? She has alot of skeletons in her closet between this and her being found guilty of abusing her powers. Well, not guilty in the sense of a trial, but thru an investigation.

Mike   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Let's see, the first two paragraph on this site is about Palin and Mccain and Obama who is the President is pushed further down.....

We will see what they will reporting on Palin and Mccain in 6weeks.....

I personally think this is racism at its finest.

Thank You President Obama for cruising on each time the media do this. We love you!

Sam   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

wow surprise surprise, the "small town" governor has done it again

Michael M, Phoenix AZ   February 18th, 2009 11:28 am ET

Gee, a Republican that "forgot to pay taxes", how novel is that?

iamsensor   February 18th, 2009 11:27 am ET

I really hate her... She should be kicked out of the goverment.

MDM-Real VA   February 18th, 2009 11:26 am ET

Who really cares... she is not even close to being the Republican Dream Girl for 2012....The Republican contenders are:

Cantor
Romney
Sanford
Uncle Tom...oops Micheal Steele

and the Wack Job in Minority Leader,.... I can't even think of Mr. Slam Dunk" who slammed 1100 pages on the Senate floor!

William   February 18th, 2009 11:26 am ET

A reformer...a maverick...yeah, right!

She's just another sponge, soaking up taxpayer money.

mk   February 18th, 2009 11:26 am ET

so, is this an error on her part, or is it an attempt to bilk the Government.
It is a fair question. If this woman is going to continue to appear in the headlines then it only makes sense to ask questions about her motives.

Ed Barczak   February 18th, 2009 11:26 am ET

And America thought she was a small time (town) politician! Hell she dodges tax issues just like the pros. She fits right in. Time to impeach her.

Klaus   February 18th, 2009 11:26 am ET

Where are all the right-wing Palin lovers who, just last week, were ranting and raving about how no one on their side ever would make a mistake like Daschle's?

PATC   February 18th, 2009 11:25 am ET

Note who did the investigation. She did. I ask everybody to read IRS Pub 463 before passing judgement on this. It is very unclear. She should be admired for getting clarification on this. Unlike Geithner who was giving money to pay Payroll taxes.

Bubba   February 18th, 2009 11:25 am ET

I had a Maverick, but the wheels fell off.

Zenith   February 18th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Good, she is not VP. But Geithner is still the Treasury Secretary who enforces the tax laws.

Lost in Texas FOREVER   February 18th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Gov Palin owes back taxes? FOR SHAME.....I only thought Democrats didn't pay their taxes. Maybe there is a place for her in the president's cabinet.

Jackie in Dallas   February 18th, 2009 11:24 am ET

Let's see, ethics violations, misuse of power, illegal collection of per diem payments, and now non-payment of taxes on what is CLEARLY income? Quite the poster child for the Republican Party...

Gee, a nice Governor Mansion in Juneau, which just happens to be the capital and where the Alaskan Legislature meets is not good enough for the Palins? So I presume you Republicans would have no problems with the Obamas staying in their Chicago home, and charging their living expenses there to the US Government on a per diem basis? Oh, please, if this were a Democratic Governor, you'd be eating her alive!

C W   February 18th, 2009 11:23 am ET

I'm curious to hear how Palin's supporters will rationalize her behavior in this matter. Another example of "gotcha" media? Prejudice because she's a woman? Persecution because she's a Christian?

How about plain old hypocrisy and stupidity? Palin's responsible for her own actions – and if she didn't know that what she did was illegal in taking the money for travel expenses while living in her own home, well, then, she more than deserves all the ridicule that's been directed toward her.

J S Ragman   February 18th, 2009 11:23 am ET

Everyone needs to make sure this is kept in the news. I wonder if Fox News will mention this?! Probably not but that is expected of that self-proclaimed news channel.

KLS   February 18th, 2009 11:23 am ET

I'm not surprised by the outcome. Wonder why it took so long to be resolved?

ZANE   February 18th, 2009 11:22 am ET

She's entitles...and NO, she won't pay it back, she's Sarah palin, Gov. of Alaska!

Ken   February 18th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Let's see,
Mccain and Palin still making Headlines?

It is Obama's time...You two go away please!

AEK   February 18th, 2009 11:22 am ET

Of course since she's a conservative Republican, it's completely different from the recent issues surrounding President Obama's cabinet choices. It's like Rush Lamebrain criticizing someone for having a substance abuse or obesity issue!

Connie   February 18th, 2009 11:22 am ET

What an idiot!

jake   February 18th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Standing there with her hands out! Robbing the state of Alaska!

katiec   February 18th, 2009 11:21 am ET

Believe all politicians running for office released their complete tax returns except for Palin. "Somehow" that request got lost in the
shuffle.
If I lived in Alaska I would be outraged over my taxpayer dollars
paying the governor for expenses for refusing to live where it is designated. And, meals for the family? Do hope they dig deeper
and expose other abuses.

patNY   February 18th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Wow! She's so against taxes, she refuses to pay her own! What a corrupt typical you know what!

Nick   February 18th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Looks like this woman was so excited to be brought in the national scene and now she doesn't know how to go away after she lost. Please Go away, Palin!

Chill out   February 18th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Just to show that she is un-american and did not pay all of her taxes. I think she is paling around with her tax problem.

Palin is just another Republican who thinks she's above it all.
We're done with her!

reality check, ky   February 18th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Gottcha! wink wink ...

Mike S., New Orleans   February 18th, 2009 11:20 am ET

Typical Republican Right Wing Neocon Hypocrite.

Sorry Tundra Barbie, but when you ask people to elect you to run the government, your taxes are their business. Just ask Daschle and the rest.

Quit milking the government teets, Sarah.

Unemployed Republican   February 18th, 2009 11:19 am ET

GOP = Party of Hypocrits
Criticising others of the same thing your doing. That is close to the defition of hypocrisy. It's very shamefull to be a republican these days.
The next time you want to point a finger to something or somebody you better look at how many of those same fingers are pointed in your direction.
My party leaders are thinking everybody in America is as stupid as they are. THEY ALL DESERVE TO BE TROWN OUT until they find a
1. New integre and thoughtfull leaders
2. New constructive message for the good of America
3. Get ride of religion wackos and extremist talk show or TV anchors of the party.

C W   February 18th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Palin's behavior is typical of these Republican so-called "reformers" who claim they despise government and its "wasteful" spending of tax payer dollars. She and her ilk never have a problem ripping off the government and stealing those same taxpayer dollars. Their contempt and hypocrisy go hand in hand: Contempt for the American people, shown in hypocrisy of their actions.

Mary   February 18th, 2009 11:19 am ET

Tax payers money, yap, it is about Palin and Palins....

Please pay back the taxes and go away!

Failin' Pailin is still Wailin'!   February 18th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Alaska should send a thank you note to the lower 48. The half-wit's tax cheating would never have discovered had she not run for VP!

We will be waiting for all dittoheads to call for her resignation now that she is a tax cheat too!

Remember how you blasted Geithner and Dascle for the same reason? It will be interesting to read the comments.

Nick the Photographer   February 18th, 2009 11:18 am ET

Huh. I guess your guys have tax problems too.

mike   February 18th, 2009 11:17 am ET

You guys stop that "gotcha" tax stuff. You know how the mainstream media works....you point out the obvious....Palin runs to Fox News and becomes a victim of the "liberal" bias....Limebaugh rants and raves....Hannity has a love fest on his show with her.........conservatives get riled up............the poor state of Alaska suffers.............and we get more of "Barbie"......UUUUGGHHHH!!!

Tyran   February 18th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Look, rich people do everything in their power to avoid paying taxes. This is the number one reason why the Republicans idea of tax cuts to the rich have and will not work. The rich will just hord all the money and play the stock market while ignoring and blaming the American people for their financial trouble. Sarah Palin is just a typical Regan Republican, trickle-down, trickle-down, trickle-down.....

NYDoc   February 18th, 2009 11:17 am ET

It would be easy to start throwing stones at this, but right now we are all living in glass houses (dems, repubs, liberals and conservatives). I just hope everyone else realizes that as well. My suspicion is though here comes the mud slinging from both sides....

Becky   February 18th, 2009 11:17 am ET

Good thing she wasnt tapped for Interior Secretary....The Republicans would have had a field day with her....

Nice job CNN? Way to try and cover up all the democrat cheats out in Obamas office, by putting this story out there. You make me sick. Anything you can do to shed your left wing views on America. Why don't you tell us more about all the tax problems Obamas cabinet is having, or would that ruin your relationship with him?

Chas in Iowa   February 18th, 2009 11:11 am ET

17K in living expenses for living in her own home?
Sounds like she's just one of us to me,......not.

Palin on Obama's Short List   February 18th, 2009 11:11 am ET

With the revelations of Palin's tax issues, President Obama immeidately put her on the short list for a cabinet post.

Susan Steinhaus   February 18th, 2009 11:09 am ET

SO SHE IS A CROOK IN ADDITION TO BEING DUMB. JOIN THE REST OF THE REPUBLICANS ON THE POLITICAL BAD MOVES TO THIS COUNTRY. MAY THEY ALL DISAPPEAR AND NEVER GET ANOTHER VOTE. JOHN MCCAIN SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF HIMSELF.

too funny   February 18th, 2009 11:09 am ET

i wonder how many republicans are going to vouch for this?

Dutch/Hampton Roads, VA   February 18th, 2009 11:09 am ET

What a hoot. Was she properly vetted Sen. McCain for the V.P. candidacy??? Now this is news. So Tom Daschle can't be HHS Secretary because of his taxes yet Sarah Palin actually campaigned and owes back taxes. This would've looked real bad on McCain if he was elected.

globalgroove   February 18th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Too funny, considering the Republicans outrage at the unpaid taxes of Democrats...

Colin, RI   February 18th, 2009 11:08 am ET

Looks like Democrats aren't the only ones who don't know how to pay taxes. Guess some should look at criticizing individuals instead of the party they belong to...

Carol   February 18th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Wow, another politician who hasn't paid all their taxes, surprise surprise

Takeshi   February 18th, 2009 11:07 am ET

OH>>>>>>>>>>>>> now its Private. ahahahahaha. truly funny. Alaska is sticking it to her for charging them so now in return they say "hey we paid you 17k.. ummmm my taxes please" ahahhaaaha.

Ohio Man   February 18th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Leslie   February 18th, 2009 11:07 am ET

Taxes owed is NOT a private matter when you are in PUBLIC office.

itbeme   February 18th, 2009 11:06 am ET

Her daughter is cool   February 18th, 2009 11:05 am ET

I read an interview with her daughter and it did wonders for separating me from Ms. Palin and her daughter in terms of my comments

Her family seems very grounded, it is just her husband and her that seem off the deep end

Pay your taxes

Predictable   February 18th, 2009 11:05 am ET

Why isn't this story posted ALL OVER fox noise.com today??? Any takers on this question??? Everytime a democrat or one of Obama's cabinet picks has even $20.00 in back taxes they BLAST it all over their front page, however they seem to be completely ignoring that the crash helmet governor doesn't know how to pay her taxes either???

FAUX NOISE CHANNEL.
