Lobbyist drops lawsuit against New York Times

McCain adamantly denied that he had an affair with lobbyist Vicki Iseman.
McCain adamantly denied that he had an affair with lobbyist Vicki Iseman.

WASHINGTON (CNN) – Washington lobbyist Vicki Iseman has dropped her libel suit against the New York Times, the paper announced Thursday.

The Times said the paper did not retract the article and that the lawsuit was settled without payment. Instead, the paper will allow Iseman’s lawyers to “give their views on the suit” on the paper’s Web site.

The lawyers wrote that the negotiation process with the newspaper was "rational" and led to "a civilized resolution."

The defamation suit contended that the Times improperly suggested in a lengthy February 2008 article that Iseman had begun an affair with John McCain in 1999, before McCain undertook his first presidential run. Iseman’s lawyers also said the article implied that she unethically profited from her relationship with McCain.

McCain and his advisers used the article and its use of unnamed sources to blast the Times as biased against the then-presidential candidate as he cruised to the Republican nomination.

The two sides issued a joint statement on the paper’s Web site stating that “Ms. Iseman has accepted The Times’s explanation, which will appear in a Note to Readers to be published in the newspaper on Feb. 20, that the article did not state, and The Times did not intend to conclude, that Ms. Iseman had engaged in a romantic affair with Senator McCain or an unethical relationship on behalf of her clients in breach of the public trust.”

Times executive editor Bill Keller told the paper that the lawsuit “was settled without money changing hands, and without The Times backing away from the story.”

The point is, to all of you security-ignorant libs, is Bush is gone…so what? NOW, we're dealing with a guy who has proven that he's not careful with his decision making process; i.e., the 4 tax cheats he appointed….plus Emanuall of course…..so, why should we trust this totally unproven, unethical individual with national secrets? You democrats are failing to see one thing; Bush kept this country safe from attack….Obama will not. In fact, he'll continue to apologize to the terrorists…probably even after they attack us again!

It's either you're stupid or drunk. Either way it doesn't serve you any good to think that the President of this country will purposely jeopardize the saftey of his fellow citizen.

Being a war hero does not make you a good person. It means you did something special in war. There is a lot of doubt in the military about just how much a "war hero" McCain was...his nickname was Songbird for all the propaganda he made for the North Vietnamese. A true hero would rather die than be used as a tool against their own country.

His behavior before and after his stint as a POW certainly hasn't been heroic. He dumped his faithful wife, he palled around with Charles Keating and was one of the Keating 5 ethics scandal, he's voted against every Veteran's rights bill in Congress, flopped miserably in 2000 and 2004 in attempts to run for President, and then carried on one of the dirtiest campaigns in recent history in 2008. I won't go into his selection for a running mate. Now, after a moving and downright uplifting concession speech, is being the number 1 "no" man in the Senate.

To think, before this election I almost liked him. I learned a lot and now don't understand why Arizona doesn't kick his butt and his $500 shoes to the curb!

She dropped the suit because she was having an affair with McCain and they reported the truth. If is was not true she would have never dropped the suit. Well Cindy I guess it is true what they say about Karma

Yeah and John Edwards didn't father that child, Bill Clinton didn't have sex with that intern. Come on, Mccain has a history as a cheater. People who cheat and get away with it don't usually only do it once. Doesn't matter if you're a Republican or Democrat, a cheater is a cheater. Read his book, part that talks about how he cheated on his first wife with Cindy and how he treated his first wife like crap for trying to stand up for herself when he was being a jerk to her. "without the Times backing away from the story".

Let's read between the lines shall we? ". . . .on behalf of her clients in breach of the public trust.” These words were chosen very carefully. To me, sounds like there was questionable behavior and she settled for their agreement that it was not on behalf of her clients or interfered with public interest.

I am sick of hearing about the GOP. They get more press time than the President! Maybe I Am losing my mind! But I do not recall Al Gore getting this kind of press time.McCain, his daughter.... what about his wife? Doesnt Cindy have something that is too too important to not get an article? Maybe she has a new hair do... or a new dress?

Come on, CNN, give it a break... they lost! We truly are not that much concerned about what they think or want to say.... unless you are in the process of setting them up for the next election!

    Pfffft......sickening..........

What in the Hell are they doing at the NY Post? And why in the hell are you, CNN, not reporting on that mess? Let's get some no bull on this story.
I went to war and fought under the orders of a White man. And now that a Black man is in office, we should show OUR President the respect that he deserves. What in the hell is the NY Piece of crap doing over there and why in the hell is that not the news?
