Meg Whitman slams California budget

Meg Whitman said Thursday that California's new budget is not the solution to the state's fiscal challenges.
Meg Whitman said Thursday that California's new budget is not the solution to the state's fiscal challenges.

(CNN) – Meg Whitman, a Republican candidate for governor in California, is not a fan of the new budget just passed by the state’s legislature.

The budget “is not the solution,” Whitman said in a statement Thursday. “Instead of respecting taxpayers and championing job creation, Sacramento is increasing taxes on the middle class. The proposed budget will kill jobs, hurt families and make future deficits even worse."

Whitman, the former President and CEO of eBay, also opposed the nearly $800 billion stimulus bill recently passed by Congress and signed into law by the President.

If successful in her gubernatorial bid, Whitman will succeed fellow Republican Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, who praised the California legislature’s passage of the state’s budget.

I'm going to try to use my psychic powers to guess what Ms. Whitman recommends we do to save our failing economy.

Could it be, tax cuts for the wealthy and the elimination of the capital gains tax?

OK, I admit, you don't have to be psychic to know what a Republican thinks about the economy. It's always tax cuts, no matter the reality.

    Grand Obstructionist Party!

The rest of us can starve, be homeless and dying outside a hospital with no healthcare....the Repubs don't care! They just want to get re-elected and not make Rush Limbaugh mad because he will make their lives a living hell on earth.

WHY do they let this lying moron who wants the President to fail run their party? Rush is such a racist.

  7. A little sad

Meg Whitman walked into a no-fail job at a company that invented a better mousetrap, and rode it until it's trajectory began it's inevitable slide into maturity.

Bozo the clown could have made a good a success.

Not to say she isn't talented, she might well be, but she is burnished with the succes of eBay and she didn't earn that.

BOO HOO!! CRY ME A RIVER!! Californians pay some pretty low property taxes (1%) that have placed their budget dangerously out of kilter for a few decades. Maybe if everybody kicked in a little more than they have been they wouldnt have to carve up other programs.

Not that im for high taxes but 1%?? sure, I'd like to have my cake and eat it too!!

Outgoing governor who doesn't need to concern himself with swaying voters (because his term limits will be up), just doing his job and helping the people of CA: "it's a good budget."

GOPer who wants to be a candidate for governor who needs to stir up hate and division and rabble-rouse the GOP base: "it's a bad budget."

Remember: This is a woman with a $1B net worth who was one of McCain's economic advisers when he scrambled back to congress to "save the world" by voting for the bailout bill that Bush allowed Wall Street to abuse. Think she might have had some stake in those banks not failing? Think she'd be complaining about this same budget if the CA legislature was controlled by Republicans?

I refuse to listen to those in industry whose greed caused all these problems. Ms. Whitman would not recognize a middle class person if they jumped up and bit her. As per usual, she only cares about wealthy people and how to make them even wealthier. She has no real alternative, no solution – just more of the same trickle down crap that has never worked and never will because of greedy people like her.

Just re-write it when you are in office like Republican Senator Gregg will for the democrat's historic bill. I can't help laughing just to read how these half developed democrat brains falling over themselves with the economy and national security. Total chaos. Why are they taking so long to cock it? Please stop the pain. Its getting unbearable.

Why don't the Holy-wood stars give half their money to the state. That way they would have a surplus of funds. Since they beleive that everyone else should support the state, they should help. They are of the mind set 'do as I say not as I do".

We the American people should all come together and make our politicians take a 20% pay cut, start paying for their own health benefits and one day off a week without pay. That will level the playing field, help each state and federal budget and they will start to feel the same way as we the people. Until they start getting their livelihood cut, they will care less about the people they supposedly represent!

    Put it together like 2 + 2:

($1B net worth) + (GOP blabber about trickle-down nonsense) =

How much trickling down did she instigate, hmmmmmmm?

If you were against the stimulus bill, then what in the world is your plan, Ms. Whitman? Gee Whiz, I'm really sick of the people who oppose just to oppose and grandstand. Get over yourselves.

I think that the first 4 comments just about cover the problem.. When did my Republican Party become the Party of do nothing, think nothing, propose nothing? This is one disgusted Republican but, if this keeps up, not for long.

Those in California who believe that Hollywood needs tax breaks to keep movie production in the State while at the same time non-Hollywood Californians should accept tax increases across the board: PLEASE STAY IN CALIFORNIA.

Republicans should not except the funds if they are so against it. That way if it does work then the people will realize and vote them out. If it doesn't work than we will vote the Dems out. It's that easy.

  24. TOO FUNNY

I FIND IT QUITE FUNNY THAT A REPUBLICAN IS SLAMMING IT'S OWN REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR. SLAM THIS STIMULUS BILL WHO CARES IT IS OVER AND DONE. REPUBLICANS CAN ASK OF THE PRESIDENT DEADLINE, TIMELINE, THEY DESERVE NOTHING AS NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THEM VOTED FOR IT SO SHUT THE HELL UP REPUBLICANS. THE NERVE OF A LOT OF THESE REPUBLICAN SENATORS, I WAS WATCHING CNN OR ANOTHER SHOW WHERE THESE YAHOOS ARE ALREADY SPENDING THEIR STATE'S MONEY BEFORE THEY GET IT, THEY DON'T DESERVE WHAT THEY OPPOSSED.
