(CNN) - The Republican Party needs to change - at least when it comes to its use of technology, Meghan McCain says.
In a column on the Daily Beast Web site, the daughter of Sen. John McCain says the GOP is likely to continue its decline in power unless members vastly improve their tech fluency.
"This has been a source of personal frustration for me for a very long time," said McCain of the party's seeming disconnect with technology. "Unless the GOP evolves as the party that can successfully utilize the Web, we'll continue to lose influence"
McCain, who authored a popular blog on her father's Web site while he was running for president, also recounts early pushback from Republican strategists when she first sought to establish the Web site.
"Many of the established Republican strategists told me that young people would not visit my web site," she wrote. "I used to categorize many of the advisors in my father's campaign into one of two groups: those that 'respected' the Internet and those who didn't. It was a running line between me and my friends who worked on my site."
McCain also suggested the party's lack of online savvy greatly contributed to her father's defeat last November.
"The Obama administration understands that my generation spends most of its day on a laptop or a BlackBerry, and that using the Web is easy way to communicate their ideas to their constituents," she said. "Until the Republican Party joins the twenty-first century and learns how to use the Internet, its members will keep getting older and the youth of America will just keep logging on to the other side."
Several Republicans appear to have gotten the message. According to TweetCongress.org, more Republicans are now on the popular social networking site Twitter than are Democrats. And the recent election for the Republican Party Chairman heavily revolved around who was best positioned to modernize the party's use of technology.
Probably what Miss McCain said is true, however her father admitted he did not know how to sent e-mails (very basic in computer technology) so I doubt if getting a quick course in computer literacy would have helped him much. There were a lot more things that caused her father to lose his bid and I think his picking the no-nothing Sarah Palin did not help. He was so out of touch with the economy and a lot of other things, he really had problems and no amount of the Republicans and there WEB skills could have helped him.
Sorry to say but being not technical savvy is not the main problem.
Sorry Meghan, you can't teach a dinosaur (like your dad) new tricks.
And since most Republicans have a Neanderthal, "back to the Stone Age" mentality, no amount of technology will change that.
My guess is that the Republicans don't want to use anything that Jesus didn't use, y'know, because it's "un-natural" and probably from Satan. There's still plenty of reasons to be deathly afraid of those magic boxes.
The GOP is always 60 to 400 yrs behind any development (the sun-centered universe, interracial marriage, indoor plumbing). They'll eventually get used to computers, after everyone has moved on to wireless bio-technology.
Actually if you saw Michael Steele's bizarre PR pep-talk today, the GOP is going to have bigger problems on their hands than computer skills.
She is the firs republican I know that partially got it right. The part that she still doesn't get it yet is that her party needs to be more inclusive. She needs to learn about the melting pot, the constitution, and the lies of republiklans.
Yo dawg –
MC Steele says the problem is that the G-to-the-O-to-the-Pee needs to get more gangsta and rappy.
um HER dad does not know how to use a computer so she should not be talking.
Also isn't this the girl THAT ONLY registered republican as a birthday present to her dad LOL.
Tech savvy is essential, but McCain defeated McCain. He's a good man, but a lousy campaigner. He would have a made a good president, but he could tell he didn't like campaigning. It's unfortunate.
Who uses a BlackBerry anymore?
"The Obama administration understands that my generation spends most of its day on a laptop or a BlackBerry, and that using the Web is easy way to communicate their ideas to their constituents," she said."
...so says the daughter of the man that can't even send a simple e-mail.
Lack of computer use didn't have a thing to do with my switch from a lifetime of supporting the GOP. Eight years of sinking this country into the gutters is why I voted for every Democrat running for office, first time ever. I grew up in a Republican family – and if any of them were alive, they would not have voted for a man that believes this ecomony is sound.
I will NEVER vote Republican, again. Computers are not the problem!!!
I really like John McCain.... when he isn't saying and doing anything to get elected President. And the GOP seems to have found themselves a little bit thus far since they lost ALL POWER. Maybe keeping them in the minority is the best place for the Grand Ol Party.
Hate to break it to ya, GOP apologists.
Tech has little to do with it.
Its your philosophy, values and methods that blow.
It’s going to take more than learning to use the Web to bring the GOP into this century. Frankly, I think the party is on the skids for good. Look what they put up last year. An old man who can’t even send an e-mail and a woman who thinks politics is a tea party and fashion show. As for Meghan? If a blog gives her something to do with her privileged life I guess it's better than her being a party girl. I’ve seen her on TV and find it hard to take her seriously. Maybe it’s the extreme makeup and hair styles.
GOOD POINT BUT PROBABLY THE LEAST OF THE GOP'S PROBLEMS.
ITS THE MESSAGE, STUPID!!!
AND ALSO STEELE TRYING TO BRING STREET CRED TO A BUNCH OF OLD RACIST CRACKERS.
Yo dawg –
MC Steele says that the problem with the Gee-2-the-Oh-2-the-Pee is that they need to get more gansta and rappy. You know, hip hop their trickle down all up in our faces...
Ah, that was fun.
Yeah. That's why daddy lost. Not the old, tired failed policies. Not the quick temper, questionable judgment and poorly articulated positions. It was because he didn't have a blog. Give me a break.
With due respect to Ms. McCain, the problem was not that voters didn't hear the GOP message. The problem is that voters *rejected* the GOP message.
You can pretty it up all you want with graphics, and tweets, and flickr pages, and facebook friends, but at the end of the day, it's only your ideas for improving the country that matter. And the GOP is flat-out of ideas.
Oh who cares!
Ahh yes, it's all about power.
the GOP needs to come to the 21 centry. they need to back away from being big business and rich and start thinking of the people who vote us non-rich, non-big business and every color, and age group instead of only the older rich
Why is she a Republican then? Just because her father is one? The tech problem is the least of their worries. How about all the corruption, bad policy and an illegal war that cost us big time. The past 4 Republican administrations which all have had the same people calling the shots since the early 70's have brought us to this point. The only thing that slowed down the looting and corruption were the 2 Democratic administrations sprinkled in between.
Believe me, McCain didn't lose because of the internet.
McCain didn't lose because the GOP is online illiterate.
He lost because the GOP doesn't incorporate diversity of different cultures and ideas.
When the demographics of the nation evolve from mostly white protestant to a flurry of different races and religions, you have to back off on the hard line stance that reflect the views of the Christian church.
@ racist Brian G Sugar Land, TX......funny you make fun of Black males, when it was a White male that ruined this country. Matter of fact he is a Texan like you? Related, dufus?
Nce young lady. I used to really admire John McCain, until the stimulus vote.
I think technology is not the only problem that party has. People are suffering and they seem to be out of touch with reality. I mean most of them own a few homes and are wealthy white guys...
