(CNN) – America's first family appears to enjoy entertaining –the Obamas hold weekly cocktail receptions at their residence - so it's likely they are looking forward to the first official White House Dinner.

President Obama and First Lady Michelle will welcome governors to the White House Sunday for the 2009 Governors' Dinner, according to a statement released by the White House Thursday. The gala will follow this weekend's gathering of the National Governors Association Winter Meeting in Washington.

"The White House is the place where our bond as Americans is strengthened," said White House Social Secretary Desiree Rogers. "We look forward to welcoming the nation’s governors to celebrate our democratic ideals, our diversity, our shared values and the best of the American spirit."

The black-tie affair will be Rogers' debut social event.

The evening will feature musical performances by the Marine Corps and the 1960's R&B group Earth Wind and Fire, a six time Grammy award-winning band formed in Obama's hometown of Chicago.

I wonder if Governor Palin will be billing her state for her per diem charge while she gets a free meal at the White House?

Maybe she can convince the RNC to buy her something nice to wear to the event.

Vicki   February 20th, 2009 9:06 pm ET

It makes me feel like I'm apart of the celebration. I want ALL of the details about every Whitehouse gala and party. We all need a little more enjoyment in our lives. Everyone is so uptight and angry. Doom and gloom on the TV at home, backstabbing and worrying about what everyone but yourself is doing at work, and all the road rage on the way home. I say ENOUGH! We'll make it through this season. Oh ye of little faith!

GraceR   February 20th, 2009 6:58 pm ET

Can't you people even read? Palin herself asked the state budget office to determine if she owes taxes on per diem. They decided that THEY made a mistake by not including it in her W-2 for 2008. Taxes are not even due for 2008 until April 15th, 2009, so they are not BACK taxes. sheesh

GraceR   February 20th, 2009 6:54 pm ET

Too bad, Nita...Palin won't be there. She is currently in rural Alaska distributing food to the hungry.

Nita   February 20th, 2009 6:24 pm ET

Is SarahPac sponsoring this trip and are they purchasing her clothing for the party

swann   February 20th, 2009 6:22 pm ET

I fo not think Todd will be going he does not seem like the fake type. What McCain will she be greeting in nothing more that a bath towe??? If she bring the kids she can let them play with the Obama girl and she can call that offical business and charge the state a per for their travel and lodging.... You are right she better not show up in those go go girl boots, so not professional look like Julia Roberts the hooker in Pretty Woman

shannon   February 20th, 2009 6:21 pm ET

why are the people who support hope and change so obsessed with hating Sarah Palin. It's really weird, the way you go on and on about her. I just didn't vote for her, these odd rants about her, no matter what the topic are getting so boring. I guess you all need someone to hate, hope and change just doesn't seem to be working for you. I agree all Presidents have State dinners that's not a big deal, give it a rest.

I think that a lot of people in financial trouble are not comfortable to see others ( leaders etc) to spend money on something which people – hard working people would like to have too : parties, dinners, better cars, fancy clothes, vacations, ....if people cannot afford this, then they grow sad, bitter, feel that someone is taking advantage of them....
people want their good time and things to have too.

Norris   February 20th, 2009 6:03 pm ET

Palin better not show up in those RNC clothes and go go boots. Get out the camera. Watch her Whose clothes is she wearing or did SarahPac autorize her a new spending tab????????? Is she staying at the Ritz Carlton?? Is the entire family there for official business that wat she can charge the Great State of Alaska.

REPUBS STOP BITCN   February 20th, 2009 5:59 pm ET

@ Ken, your worried about the cost of this dinner and the cost of flying to Denver to sign the bill? Are you for real? What did Bush cost this nation in a war we should of never started, IRAQ. What is the cost for that. Don't sweat the small stuff. We are in this mess because of the last administration.

REPUBS STOP BITCN   February 20th, 2009 5:50 pm ET

@Annie-Palin 2012, I guess paying her taxes late is better than not paying them at all. Isn't this what the Democrats did but got blasted, your statement doesn't make sense . Did she ever pay the RNC for her entire families clothes? Probably not.

Texans   February 20th, 2009 5:50 pm ET

They shoul have Palin seat in the middle Bill Ayers and Michelle Obama's mother. And Hillary should go to the restroom each time Palin goes to make sure she is not setting of explosives

Dwight Frye   February 20th, 2009 5:46 pm ET

Governor Sarah Palin, upon learning there might be a tax problem with the per-diem amounts she charged, asked the authorities to advise her what the tax implications were. She was just recently informed the IRS opinion was that the funds were taxable, and thus should be added to her 2008 tax bill - due April 15, 2009. She has every intention of paying it as she stated. They are not back-taxes she was trying to cover-up or dodge like so many Obama appointee-hopefuls.

On the other hand, the country has been subjected to the embarrassing development of many of Obama's high-level appointees, including one that WAS appointed (Geithner), going back and paying taxes they must have known about all along because they were up for a position that would uncover the tax-cheating in the vetting process. You people who voted for Obama have been conned by one of the smoothest-talking con-artists to come out of the cesspool of Chicago thug-style politics. Hope and change indeed, you swallowed it hook, line and sinker.

A black tie gala affair, with world class entertainment (Rolling Stones; E,W&F, Stevie Wonder, Elton John) for the governors, their spouses and assorted guests. And I am sure dinner will NOT be fried chicken, mashed potatoes and cole slaw. How much is this going to cost? In times of crisis, is it wise for this type of expenditure? How about using this money to help a few families in each state, on behalf of each governor??
Lead by example!!!!

The Republican Governors should decline the invitation to the White House since Obama is a Socialist. How can you despise someone that much and still dip in to the same dish with the person. The Obamas should guard their drinks and not turn their back on anyone so they don't get stabbed at the back. The Republicans did it before the stimulus bill and what's the guarantee ithey wouldn't do it again.

I want REAL change. I want dead bodies littering the capitol.
I fear a revolution is near.
I've had it with ALL of these politicians.
None of what they are doing is for the good for the people, it's for the good of their pocket.

"A democracy is nothing more than mob rule, where fifty-one percent of the people may take away the rights of the other forty-nine."

"A wise and frugal government, which shall leave men free to regulate their own pursuits of industry and improvement, and shall not take from the mouth of labor the bread it has earned – this is the sum of good government. "

"Delay is preferable to error. "

"I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense of taking care of them. "
- Thomas Jefferson

Good words to live by.

An American   February 20th, 2009 4:14 pm ET

Something tells me the Obama's are not feeling the effects of the economy at all. I bet "we" the taxpayers are footing the bill for those parties and dinners as well. Don't tell us to suck it up Obama until "you" suck it up. All you have for the American public is gloom and doom and you on the other hand are just living it up – traveling here and there and having parties. We were just put deeper in debt thanks to you. I think the president and the first lady have worked hard and deserve a party sponsored by the people. Its tradition.

However, I'm vexed from all the racist, bigoted, and moronic comments stating that the stimulus bill and the Obama's are only for those on welfare who are too inept to find suitable careers. Idiots! Please realize that entire communities are being erased due to this economic melt down. No one can hide from this.

Everyone one has a right to disagree; but, listening to the rhetoric of the media and the republican party instead of reading for themselves seems to be a common thread amongst the republicans. Wake up people and remove the blindfold!

Don't make a mindless comment about the stimulus unless you have a better solution to America's problems. Thought not.

As far as how long winded Obama was on his first press conference, I am getting tired of hearing all the complaints. He was explaining very clearly, so there could be no mistake that this is a major economic crisis we face and what his administration is doing to right the mistakes of the last eight years. I thought his mastery of the English language was a breath of fresh air over the previous administration which had a hard time putting two sentences together. As far as I am concerned, I could listen to him all day and not be put to sleep.

Sniffit   February 20th, 2009 3:47 pm ET

@ Raymond (and his ilk)

Your logic is entirely faulty. Sure, the conomy is in the crapper and banks needed to be bailed out...and perhaps we'll eb forced to nationalize a couple of them because of the horrifying mess the GOP created...but keep in mind that the government is the one bailing them out (i.e., it has the money). If you'd like to complain about taxpayer money going to a dinner party that is held every single year on taxpayer money, that's one thing, but I didn't see the GOP complaining about such things as they ran up an incredible budget deficit. You're just vomiting up the baseless talking points mama-bird Limbaugh vomited into your mouth in the first place.

Dan, TX   February 20th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

I pay more taxes than most people and I am very happy to use taxpayer dollars to help President Obama enjoy discussing the future of our nation with the governors of our states. I'd call that a business dinner. If the CEOs of failed companies "earn" millions of dollars a year and the republicans complain about limiting their earnings, I don't see how they can complain about this.

worriedmom   February 20th, 2009 3:44 pm ET

Ok i dont have a problem with them hosting dinners but hey I do have a problem with Pelosi and others taking European trips on taxpayers money! People need to start raising hell about this. The functions need to go as they always did. He is working hard to help this country and this a part of his job. Do you think he should walk around in rags and barefoot, not seeing anyone? He did not cause this problem, let's pray that he can fix some of it. We need to pray for all of our leaders, starting with him and going all the way down to our employers.

Matthew, Detroit   February 20th, 2009 3:37 pm ET

I am a republican. I ask others to find fault in him where ever you like,

BUT to rip the guy for having a state dinner at the White House is pretty
stupid. Every president before and every presidnet after will continue to have dinners at the White House.

Get over it and move on to real issues like Nationalizing Banks, Nationalizing Oil Companies, Out of control spending just like the Out of control spending Bush propagated. These are the problems.

I think we give the guy his 2 years while watching very carefully and speaking our mind on legitimate and relevant issues. Dont make yourselves look stupid by arguing with others over insignificant things.

Hosting dinners is part of being President and First Lady. Some of you people never complained before. Or do you want different standards for President Obama. Just because some of you are hateful and miserable doesn't mean everyone wants to join you. Get a Earth Wind and Fire CD and relax.

What are you talking about   February 20th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

To all the Raymond's, Babara's , JC's and the rest of you republicans doomsayers who don't read the fine print. The governors will already be in Washington for the annual Governer's winter meeting. They aren't coming just for this traditional annual dinner.

No one complained when G W Bush, Clinton, Bush Sr., Regan, Carter, and the rest of the presidents had this dinner. This is also another chance for bipartisanship since you have a large percentage of the American people complaining so much about our government officials getting along.

And for the record "Jay 2:41pm" you should read the break down of the stimulus bill –its on the cnn website–before you open your mouth with an ignorant comment. It does include provisions for military and VA health.

And, I'm tired of the racist and ignorant comments assuming that the stimulus bill is only for those people on welfare who are too lazy to find work. Such idiots! Stop and think. When whole towns and rural communities get shut down, where are these peoples supposed to go to get work.

Stop listening to the RNC fear and doom rhetoric and read for yourself. Everyone gets some kind of benefit from this bill either directly or indirectly which is more than I can say for the past 8 years. If your worried about spending leave the country. We've already spent our way out of a democratic surplus to a much higher deficit given to us by W and the thugs in our past presidency. Where were all the concerns for the country by these fake patriotic hypocrites then? Gees, I am so over these nit wits on this site.

Carol   February 20th, 2009 3:33 pm ET

Well, we could stop all this fancy stuff at the White House, but that says to the world that America is in big trouble. Maybe we are (and so are other countries), but let's not go to extremes showing our poverty.

We need to "keep up appearances" overall.

YET, I am furious about the Nancy Pelosi misuse of our funds to take friends, relatives, and many of my fellow Democrats to Italy to do mostly personal stuff. Then there are other congressional groups using our money to tour India in honor of MLKing's visit there decades ago?

Diane P,

EW&F was created in 1969, and had their first hit that year. Although I agree that calling them a 60s group pushes the term, technically, they are.

Raymond, et. al.: giving dinners and entertaining are a part of the job description for the President and First Lady. It is one of the reasons they live in the White House. And, in actuality, they have instituted cost-savings in both catering and staffing. Personally, I think that you would find something negative to say no matter what they did. Grow up or shut up. In case you didn't know it, we paid President Bush for every trip home to Crawford, every trip to Camp David, and every dinner party they had, as well. Including the two weeks during and after Katrina where President Bush ignored the devastation of one of our major cities, and told his bud "Good job, Brownie" for taking two weeks to get emergency crews into New Orleans.

Jay, you obviously did not read the Stimulus Bill summary. Although some of the funds for the VA were cut (thanks to the Republicans), there are still some for improving facilities and extending care. Not as much as was in the original bill, but some.

Matthew, Detroit   February 20th, 2009 3:16 pm ET

I dont mind the guy having a nice dinner party that is fine.

But why are you even thnking about NATIONALIZING banks.

ACTUALLY, the CHAVEZ comment is pretty accurate if it holds up.

GIBBS in the press conference today said that the President would NOT nationalize banks.

But, CHRIS DODD SENATE DEMOCRAT just came out and said they may need to nationalize the banks.

You have a congresswoman from California calling for Nationalizing the OIL Companies.

Either way you spin it. If you start nationalizing then you are moving to a SOCIALISTIC form or goverment.

PUTIN Nationalized in RUSSIA. CHAVEZ Nationalized in Venezuela.

Then Chavez CHANGED the constitution so that he can be president forever. You peopel should at least read and keep up. Dont be sheep.

@Matt in Minn

You know dag on well that it would have looked much worse for Obama to have a dinner in Canada than it would within the confines of his home. Besides, perception was far from the most important reason why Obama skated from up North as quickly as he did. His trip was just a power play to show the Canadian government how much pull that he has with their people.

Jay   February 20th, 2009 3:03 pm ET

So many of these comments are childish and mean-spirited. Social events serve important purposes–always have, always will. The critics need to grow up a little and set aside their mean-spirited eagerness to criticize what is entirely normal and ordinary–even in difficult economic times, even when the host is not the person you voted for.

Why weren't all of you moaners out there complaining when the Bush's entertained? It is the role of the occupants of the White House and all heads of state to do just what is being done by Pres. and Mrs. Obama, and if you think that the amount of money being spent to do it is going to bankrupt the economy, you are wrong. That money is part of a budget for the White House and has always been so. Nancy and Ronald entertained lavishly during an economy nearly as bad as this one, and no one blasted the Reagans for it.
Grow up, little people.

For Raymond: Were you this quick to judgement when the Bush family held "their" formal affairs. The OBAMAS did not invent this gathering; it is a long held legacy for the nations govenors. Besides, everyone has their own stake in business ventures while trying to find relief in our fragile ecomony. My wife is a couture designer, who designs for Gov. Beverly Perdue of North Carolina, so this type of exposure is vital to her business, and like so many struggling Americans, her business supports our home, being able to care for 12 shelter animals, and paying for me to return to college and graduate school in hopes of finding a job in the future. And I will sign this as a grateful husband.

Pelosi in Italy, Durbin in Greece, Hillary is East Asia, Kerry in Gaza and Obama in his "spiffy ride" traveling all over the country. He could have delivered that same message during one of his many, many speeches at a far less cost to the taxpayers. He needs to cut back too.

Weekends at Camp David, then back to Chicago for the weekend – and you all joked about Bush at the ranch....weekly cocktail parties – And why isn't he asking his House and Senate party members to show that they don't need a week holiday in Rome or elsewhere at the taxpayer's expense now either?

Debby, NJ...foot soldier 'til 2016   February 20th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

You know half of those who have replied are Republican...how do I know...because all they do is COMPLAIN like little children and are just damn envious!!!

Jay – grow a brain – the VA is funded yearly thru the Pentagon. It's already budgeted. And his will NOT be the only bill - it's only the first. Shut up until after you spend a few minutes THINKING.

RJ   February 20th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

To all you Obama kool-aid drinkers... er supporters are saying two wrongs make a right... I get it.
Hypocrites.

Continue to press forward Mr. President. While you will always have detractors simply because they are overtaken by hatred or ignorance, the vast majority of us want you to succeed because we understand that our and your success go hand in hand. I was proud that I voted for you in November and continue to remain proud of you and your beautiful family.

Mari   February 20th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

@ BILL........ they have been having this dinner in Washington for dozens of years. And I seriously doubt, that IF Obama canceled this dinner to save the money........ you would be impressed!

Its very important for the governors of all 50 states to get together and have access to the president.

I am wondering........... with all the mean-vitriolic comments constantly bashing Obama from the far-right; I remember how these very same people would shout "UNPATRIOTIC!" WHENEVER BUSH WAS BASHED ............ SO IS THE FAR-RIGHT NO LONGER PATRIOTIC SINCE ALL IT DOES IS COMPLAIN, CRITICIZE AND DEMEAN OUR PRESIDENT???????????????????????????? Hypocrites!

Vickie   February 20th, 2009 2:53 pm ET

Good grief..............the man has only been in office for a month... why don't you people just get a life and let him try to fix the nation....What did Bush do for 8 years................NOTHING.

Raymond, it part of the job to have meetings and receptions for those invited to the White House for business. It's not like the First Family is saying "hey I feel like a party." Sarcasm or not give it a rest.

Jon in Ca   February 20th, 2009 2:50 pm ET

Someone must have just whispered "Nationalize the Banks" into Obama's ear...notice the toothy grin??

Wake-me-when-it's-over   February 20th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

I am glad that Michelle is a social butterfly. There are many many black people who love hearing every detail about this incredible first family. They feel as if they are there with her, and that is what they would do, party hearty. Just wake me when its over, and they have left the whitehouse. Then America that we love, will be so much better.

Vegas Barbie the Paralegal for Obama   February 20th, 2009 2:49 pm ET

Yet another effort by our new President to reach out a hand and be bipartisan. AND I love that EWF is performing! Hopefully that will keep the likes of Gov. Sarah Palin and her hillbilly tendencies home in Alaska, arming the folks who frequent her state parks and making moose stew for her brood–she is dedidedlly unhip.

I bet GOP Steele shows up with a bucket of chicken a la Fred Sanford.

Barbara, NY   February 20th, 2009 2:48 pm ET

@Raymond:

George Bush spent approximately 3 of his 8 years at Camp David. So don't give me Mr. and Mrs. Chavez. No, not after the 7th worst president ever just left office.

Matt in MN   February 20th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Wait... so Obama couldn't have a dinner when he was in Canada, and wanted no frills because America is in a hard time and he didn't want anything "lavish" - but he can have Weekly cocktail parties and now host a black tie dinner?

Wow... double talk much?

Obama Obama   February 20th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

RNC needs to stop the scare tatics, Its not going to work. I think RNC is just destroying any chance in the future of being nominated for awhile. Its not their opinion that counts on how things are going. ITs the American People!! RNC put us in this mess!

rich   February 20th, 2009 2:47 pm ET

Question for CNN? Why do you have to be polling Obama's performance what seems to be everyday? You know, we the American people may have a short attention span, but we are not schizophrenic having one view today, and another tomorrow. So, please stop with the silly polls be it President Obama or any other President. All you are doing is continuing to keep the divisions in the country that needs to heal alive by carving up those who you believe support of not support the president. Cover real news for a change.

Had It   February 20th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

Ramond, give it a rest. It will be a long four to eight years for people like you that are so filled with hate. That's a long way to drag such a heavy burden.

beevee   February 20th, 2009 2:46 pm ET

I commend the sincere reaching out efforts of the first family. I hope the other side(s) will reciprocate.

Glenda, PA   February 20th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

Don't forget to count the silverware after Sarah Palin leaves.

Joe Fattal   February 20th, 2009 2:45 pm ET

and why is MY comments awaiting moderation while Raymond's comments get posted ? Is this turning into a "fair and balanced" website? Seriously, is there a form I am supposed to fill out.
It seems none of my comments ever get posted with this moderation thing. I think I will stop bothering and go back to Huff Post. Bye bye .

Kayla   February 20th, 2009 2:44 pm ET

HE DID NOT PUT US IN THIS HELL HOLE, YOUR PRESIDENT DID , AND HE BUSH STILL HAD A LOT OF PARTIES AT THE WHITE HOUSE.

Janet   February 20th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

You know what get a life, to say that they're "enjoying the high life while America foots the bill", who foot the bill the full 8 years that Bush was there? Get over yourself!!!

tina   February 20th, 2009 2:43 pm ET

Flying to Chicago to eat at the most expensive restaurant for Valentine's Day is a another good example of abusing the American Tax Payers money!

joe   February 20th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

President Obama, Keep your head high, Don't let Republicans swiftboat you anymore!

Mary   February 20th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Gosh, somebody better tell them we are in an economic catastrophe, the worse economy since the Great Depression. Please, sir, can I have some more food?

MJJofSara   February 20th, 2009 2:42 pm ET

Raymond; Why do you have to write tripe like that. Presidents have been having these events since George and Martha Washington.
and to say Chavez exactly what is that supposed to mean. aha, operative word: mean. you are just being mean spirited.
forget your sarcasm.
President and Mrs Obama are going to do just fine and without snide snarky remarks from the likes of you... go fish.

RJ   February 20th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

Who's paying for this party in a time of financial crisis?
Because I highly doubt it's a cash bar.
Oh yea... We, THE TAXPAYERS ARE!
You can't blast CEO's bad behavior when the POTUS is doing the exact same thing!
Hypocrites!

Cynthia - Arkansas   February 20th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

I'm sure it will be wonderful. They make us proud!!!!

Jay   February 20th, 2009 2:41 pm ET

I think it's a little early to call him disappointing; although, it appears to be heading that way. My main disappointment is that the stimulus bill, with all of its special interests and pork spending, absolutely ignores the Veteran's Administration! How in the world can we be fighting two wars, with American military members suffering through the multitudes of physical and emotional problems that go along with them, and there is absolutely nothing in this package to deal with that, and the media has completely ignored that fact. I knew that Obama was anti-military, and I knew that the military would suffer under his presidency, but this is too much to continue being ignored. As unpopular as these wars may be, our men and women in uniform deserve much better than that.

meh   February 20th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

Raymond...stop whining. He's the PRESIDENT. This is what Presidents DO. Funny, I've never seen you in here complaining about W. taking vacations (w. the expensive Airforce One jet) to Crawford Ranch every other week.

Debby   February 20th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

So much for Obama saying he didn't want a lavish dinner in Canada he is having his own extraveganza at the taxpayers expense.

Once you vote Black   February 20th, 2009 2:40 pm ET

She always looks so good and she has some nice big hips.

Jo   February 20th, 2009 2:39 pm ET

Hopefully the republican governors who know all and feel they can run their own states without stimulus money will stay away. I would hate for the president to meet with people who have no regard for him to show up. But he is to much of a gentleman to be like the likes of Barber and his cronies.

oknfl   February 20th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

And the President Obama bashing begins in 3...2...1

Arin   February 20th, 2009 2:38 pm ET

Will Sarah Palin's per diem be covered by the Alaska Government, or will the NGA cover costs? If the NGA covers cost, can she still request additional per diem from Alaska? There's a nice D&G dress she's got her eye on.

Bill   February 20th, 2009 2:37 pm ET

Ceremonies like these that are full of pomp and circumstance should be dropped if we are in truly hard economic times. All of this the travel for each governor, the food, the entertainment, etc. etc. are on the taxpayer's dime. As one of those taxpayers, I'm definitely NOT impressed.

Raymond   February 20th, 2009 2:35 pm ET

Looks like Mr and Mrs Chavez ...er.. Obama are enjoying the HIGH LIFE while America foots the bill.

Glad they're making "sacrifices" like the rest of us. (insert sarcasm)
